Purpose: Bronchoscopic biopsy of pulmonary carcinoid tumors has been controversial, and no study to date is dedicated to investigate diagnostic yield or safety. We reviewed our single center experience with pulmonary carcinoid tumors over a 10-year time period and assessed the diagnostic yield and safety of bronchoscopic biopsy of these tumors., Methods: A retrospective analysis was conducted of all bronchopulmonary carcinoid tumors from January 2003 through January 2014 for patients treated at or referred to our tertiary care facility, including patient and tumor characteristics, diagnostic yield, and complications of bronchoscopy., Results: Forty-nine patients with bronchopulmonary carcinoid tumors were identified. 75.5 % of our patients were female, and the median age was 60.7 years. 85.7 % patients were white, and 53.1 % were smokers. 83.7 % had typical carcinoid tumors or tumorlets, and 85.7 % had centrally located tumors. The median tumor size was 2.0 cm. Thirty patients underwent bronchoscopy for diagnostic evaluation. 76.7 % were diagnosed via bronchoscopic biopsy. Bronchoscopic yield was calculated at 65.7 % yield, and two complications of moderate to severe bleeding occurred with no emergent thoracotomies, transfusions, or deaths. No other complications occurred from bronchoscopy., Conclusion: The diagnosis of pulmonary carcinoid tumors via bronchoscopic biopsy is safe and effective, and bronchoscopy is recommended as the initial diagnostic modality for these tumors.

Forest systems cover more than 4.1 x 10(9) hectares of the Earth's land area. Globally, forest vegetation and soils contain about 1146 petagrams of carbon, with approximately 37 percent of this carbon in low-latitude forests, 14 percent in mid-latitudes, and 49 percent at high latitudes. Over two-thirds of the carbon in forest ecosystems is contained in soils and associated peat deposits. In 1990, deforestation in the low latitudes emitted 1.6 +/- 0.4 petagrams of carbon per year, whereas forest area expansion and growth in mid- and high-latitude forest sequestered 0.7 +/- 0.2 petagrams of carbon per year, for a net flux to the atmosphere of 0.9 +/- 0.4 petagrams of carbon per year. Slowing deforestation, combined with an increase in forestation and other management measures to improve forest ecosystem productivity, could conserve or sequester significant quantities of carbon. Future forest carbon cycling trends attributable to losses and regrowth associated with global climate and land-use change are uncertain. Model projections and some results suggest that forests could be carbon sinks or sources in the future.

Satellite-based remote sensing offers great potential for frequent assessment of forest cover over broad spatial scales, however, calibration and validation using ground-based surveys are needed. In this study, forest cover estimates for the United States from a recently developed land surface cover map generated from satellite remote sensing data were compared to state-level inventory data from the U.S. National Resources Planning Act Timber Database. The land cover map was produced at the U.S. Geological Survey EROS Data Center and is based on imagery from the AVHRR sensor (spatial resolution ∼1.1 km). Vegetation type was classified using the temporal signal in the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index derived from AVHRR data. Comparisons revealed close agreement in the estimate of forest cover for extensively forested states with large polygons of relatively similar vegetation such as Oregon. Larger forest cover differences were observed in other states with some regional patterns in the level of agreement apparent.Comparisons in inventory- and remote sensing-based estimates of current forested area with potential vegetation maps indicated the magnitude of past land use change and the potential for future changes. The remote sensing approach appears to hold promise for conducting surveys of forest cover where inventory data are limited or where rates of vegetation change, due to human or climatic factors, are rapid.

According to most global climate models, a continued build-up of CO2 and other greenhouse gases will lead to significant changes in temperature and precipitation patterns over large parts of the Earth. Below-ground processes will strongly influence the response of the biosphere to climate change and are likely to contribute to positive or negative biospheric feedbacks to climate change. Current global carbon budgets suggest that as much as 2000 Pg of carbon exists in soil systems. There is considerable disagreement, however, over pool sizes and flux (e.g. CO2, CH4) for various ecosystems. An equilibrium analysis of changes in global below-ground carbon storage due to a doubled-CO2 climate suggests a range from a possible sink of 41 Pg to a possible source of 101 Pg. Components of the terrestrial biosphere could be managed to sequester or conserve carbon and mitigate accumulation of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.

The influence of vesicular-arbuscular mycorrhizal (VAM) symbiosis on the transport of cytokinins from the root to the shoot of Citrus jambhiri Lush. seedlings inoculated with cultures of Glomus etunicatum (Becker and Gerd.), G. fusciculatum (Thaxt.) Gerd. and Trappe, or G. mosseae (Nichol. and Gerd.) was investigated. Cytokinins collected from root exudates over a 90-day period were analyzed by high-performance liquid chromatography, mass spectrometry and a bioassay. The flux of cytokinins was independent of root exudate flux. Seedlings inoculated with G. fasciculatum or G. mosseae yielded a greater flux of zeatin, dihydrozeatin and zeatin riboside than non-inoculated seedlings. The flux of zeatin riboside was significantly greater than the flux of zeatin in seedlings inoculated with VAM symbionts. Vesicular-arbuscular mycorrhizal relationships apparently contributed to, or influenced, the export of cytokinins from the root. The elevated cytokinin flux of inoculated seedlings was associated with improved tissue phosphorus nutrition and a significant increase in seedling biomass.

Attempts to relate plant metabolic activity with developmental stage are often hindered by lack of an appropriate developmental index. Existing indices of morphological development are unsuitable for use with plants having a semideterminate, recurrently flushing pattern of growth as displayed by Quercus seedlings. We propose the following morphological index (QMI) to define the stages of Quercus seedling ontogeny: (1) radicle emergence; (2) epicotyl emergence from the soil; and (for each flush) (3) termination of elongation of the second internode, which corresponds with the period of most rapid stem elongation; (4) completion of elongation by all internodes, which corresponds with the period of most rapid leaf elongation; and (5) completion of elongation of the last leaf but one, which usually precedes closely the pause between one growth flush and another. The relationship between QMI and net photosynthesis by individual leaves of Quercus rubra L. seedlings was determined. Net photosynthesis increased with QMI during a flush, but at a particular QMI stage, generally decreased from one flush to the next.
