1. Children's multimodal coordination during collaborative problem solving

Abstract

When children solve cognitive problems together, they coordinate their speech, hand movements and head movements. Previous studies with adults have shown that such multimodal coordination is related to better collaboration. We do not know whether this is true for children, however. In this study, dyads of children (6-10 years) discussed and solved balance scale problems together. To investigate children's multimodal coordination, we measured their speech, hand movements and head movements throughout their bouts of discussion, and applied multidimensional Recurrence Quantification Analysis (MdRQA) on these timeseries. We coded the type of collaboration the children engaged in during these bouts of discussion. We measured performance regarding predicting to which side the balance scale would tilt. We will analyse how children's multimodal coordination is related to the type of collaboration and to their performance on the balance scale problems. Our results will show how successful collaboration between children emerges from their multimodal coordination.

Abstract

The brain-as-computer metaphor has anchored the professed computational nature of the mind, wresting it down from the intangible logic of Platonic philosophy to a material basis for empirical science. However, as with many long-lasting metaphors in science, the computer metaphor has been explored and stretched long enough to reveal its boundaries. These boundaries highlight widening gaps in our understanding of the brain's role in an organism's goal-directed, intelligent behaviors and thoughts. In search of a more appropriate metaphor that reflects the potentially noncomputable functions of mind and brain, eight author groups answer the following questions: (1) What do we understand by the computer metaphor of the brain and cognition? (2) What are some of the limitations of this computer metaphor? (3) What metaphor should replace the computational metaphor? (4) What findings support alternative metaphors? Despite agreeing about feeling the strain of the strictures of computer metaphors, the authors suggest an exciting diversity of possible metaphoric options for future research into the mind and brain., Comment: 157 pages, 19 figures

22. Keeping the car clean : on the electrification of private transport

Abstract

The electrification of private road vehicles - and the provision of a low carbon generation mix that supplies the energy for their motion - is likely to be a key contributor to meeting net zero targets and limiting the disastrous effects of anthropogenic climate change. The work presented in this thesis surrounds two aspects of this transition. Firstly, as EVs are fundamentally different to internal combustion vehicles (ICVs), in that their energy storage capacity is far smaller and the rate at which it can be replenished is much slower, there has been consumer resistance to their adoption due to the perception that their charging carries inconvenience compared to ICV fuelling. Secondly, as the energy demand of private road vehicles is shifted from the petrochemical supply chain to the electricity grid, there are potential i) issues surrounding the resilience of the grid and ii) opportunities resulting from the flexibility and 'schedulability' of EV charging in enabling the further decarbonisation of the power sector. With regards to the first aspect, this thesis presents an investigation of the inconvenience of EV charging versus ICV fuelling and how this is likely to change depending on vehicle parameters - battery capacity and charger power - and the set of locations at which it can be charged. It was found that if the EV can be charged while parked at home, the majority (80-95%) of individuals could make the transition to EVs without suffering any increase in time penalty associated with charging compared to ICV fuelling with modest battery capacities at the lower end of the market. However, for drivers who cannot charge at home this convenience parity is harder to achieve. This can be made easier by increasing battery capacity and charger power and ensuring the provision of public destination and en route charging infrastructure. This thesis presents characterisation of the likely demand at such infrastructure based on the analysis of smartphone app users' locational data. It was found that this kind of EV charging demand is likely to vary significantly in time and by location, depending on what kind of public amenity it is installed at; such an approach could be invaluable to transport and power system planners given the projected rapid uptake of EVs. This thesis presents analysis into the likely impact of EV charging on residential distribution networks, taking into account the effect of i) the way in which drivers schedule charge events, ii) the social demographics (and hence travel habits) of the individuals served by a network and iii) the effect of the rapidly evolving EV sector and the resulting changes in technical parameters and level of charging infrastructure. By means of case studies on real distribution networks in Glasgow's South side, it was found that all three of the above factors have a significant effect on the impact seen from EV charging and that, if their charging is uncontrolled, residential distribution networks in better-off areas with high rates of car ownership are unlikely to be able to cope with charging load when over 40% of vehicles are replaced with EVs. Based on the above finding, this thesis presents an investigation of the potential of EVs to interact positively with the grid, by charging selectively to i) avoid network peaks and thus enable a higher penetration of EVs before the network must be reinforced and ii) enable the further decarbonisation of the power system by charging when grid carbon emissions are low and local renewable energy is in surplus. Techniques to schedule charge events are presented: a 'valley filling' optimisation approach based on the controller having perfect foresight of the arrival of vehicles to represent the best case; and a set of low-information heuristics that could operate using data from 'smart' EV chargers. Though some of the heuristics could perform similarly to the formal optimisation, both methods resulted in the network being operated outwith statutory GB voltage limits for 100% penetration of EVs. Finally, it was found that there is significant potential for EVs to complement the decarbonisation of the power system. If 'smart charged', their resulting carbon intensity (gCO2/km) can be reduced to around a fifth of that of a new petrol or diesel car if charged from the current GB grid. Furthermore, a penetration of 20% EVs in Scotland could be smart-charged to absorb up to 75% of curtailed generation at Scotland's largest onshore wind farm.

Abstract

Background/Objectives: Peptide-based treatments represent an expanding area and require innovative approaches to enhance bioavailability. Combination with cell-penetrating peptides (CPPs) is an attractive strategy to improve non-invasive delivery across nasal epithelial barriers for systemic and direct nose-to-brain transport. We previously developed a modified CPP system termed Glycosaminoglycan-binding Enhanced Transduction (GET) that improves insulin delivery across gastrointestinal epithelium. It contains a membrane docking sequence to promote cellular interactions (P21), a cationic polyarginine domain to stimulate uptake (8R) and an endosomal escaping sequence to maximize availability for onward distribution (LK15). It is synthesized as a single 44-residue peptide (P21-LK15-8R; PLR). Methods: The current research used in vitro assays for a novel exploration of PLR's ability to improve the transport of two contrasting peptides, insulin (51 residues, net negative charge) and oxytocin (9 residues, weak positive charge) across an RPMI 2650 human nasal epithelial cell barrier cultured at the air–liquid interface. Results: PLR enhanced insulin transcytosis over a 6 h period by 7.8-fold when used at a 2:1 molar ratio of insulin/PLR (p < 0.0001 versus insulin alone). Enhanced oxytocin transcytosis (5-fold) occurred with a 1:10 ratio of oytocin/PLR (p < 0.01). Importantly, these were independent of any impact on transepithelial electrical resistance (TEER) or cell viability (p > 0.05). Conclusions: We advocate the continued evaluation of insulin–PLR and oxytocin–PLR formulations, including longer-term assessments of ciliotoxicity and cytotoxicity in vitro followed by in vivo assessments of systemic and nose-to-brain delivery. 35. Gesture Networks: Introducing Dynamic Time Warping and Network Analysis for the Kinematic Study of Gesture Ensembles

Abstract

We introduce applications of established methods in time-series and network analysis that we jointly apply here for the kinematic study "of gesture ensembles". We define a gesture ensemble as the set of gestures produced during discourse by a single person or a group of persons. Here we are interested in how gestures kinematically relate to one another. We use a bivariate time-series analysis called dynamic time warping to assess how similar each gesture is to other gestures in the ensemble in terms of their velocity profiles (as well as studying multivariate cases with gesture velocity and speech amplitude envelope profiles). By relating each gesture event to all other gesture events produced in the ensemble, we obtain a weighted matrix that essentially represents a network of similarity relationships. We can therefore apply network analysis that can gauge, for example, how diverse or coherent certain gestures are with respect to the gesture ensemble. We believe these analyses promise to be of great value for gesture studies, as we can come to understand how low-level gesture features (kinematics of gesture) relate to the higher-order organizational structures present at the level of discourse.

Abstract

This thesis presents optical measurements used to explore nanophotonic circuits composed of III-V semiconductors with embedded quantum dots. The focus of this work is to investigate issues related to the scalability and performance of these structures. A technique to register the position of a quantum dot, relative to pre-fabricated registration markers, with the aid of a solid immersion lens, is developed. The variance in the repeatedly registered position of the quantum dot is shown to be significantly reduced as a result of the solid immersion lens, compared with positions registered without a solid immersion lens. The total error of the deterministic fabrication, using position registered quantum dots, is small when compared to the size of optical fields. Confirmation of this has been achieved through two independent methods. Re-registration of the position relative to deterministically positioned registration markers show that the total error of deterministic fabrication is small. Additionally, the demonstration of optical spin readout, via the deterministic positioning of a quantum dot at a chiral point of a suspended nanobeam waveguide, further confirms the positional accuracy of the technique. The demonstration of efficiently coupled single photons form an embedded quantum into a nanobeam waveguide, with enhanced coherence lengths due to resonant excitation, is achieved. A high level of resonant laser rejection is demonstrated due to the orthogonal excitation and waveguide propagation directions.

45. Prisoners Accessing Relational Connections with Dogs: A Just Outcome of the St. John Ambulance Therapy Dog Program at Stony Mountain Institution

Abstract

Prisoner mental health is a serious concern across the globe, and increasing inmates’ access to relational connections with domestic animals is a unique and emerging response. This article presents the just outcome of an evaluation of the St. John Ambulance Therapy Dog Program at a medium-security federal correctional institution in Canada. Interviews were held with a purposive sample of 10 therapy dog program participants, 3 therapy dog handlers and the institutional program coordinator. We found that the therapy dogs were perceived to offer a form of love and support to the participants, achieving the objectives of the therapy dog program in an environment where access to relational connections with dogs is denied. This denial is posited as unjust because other-than-human relationships can be significant to some individuals’ mental health. Love was experienced by the inmates as an effortless and reciprocal closeness with the therapy dogs and with no external expectations. Support was experienced by the participants as trustworthy communication, meaningful motivation and a sense of grounding, all difficult to achieve while incarcerated. We found that the relational connections between the participants and therapy dogs benefitted the inmates’ mental health, and offered insight on addressing two challenges commonly faced by correctional institutions: mandatory programming and hypermasculinity.
