Abstract

Scalable quantum technologies require faithful conversion between matter qubits storing the quantum information and photonic qubits carrying the information in integrated circuits and waveguides. We demonstrate that the electromagnetic field chirality which arises in nanophotonic waveguides leads to unidirectional emission from an embedded quantum dot quantum emitter, with resultant in-plane transfer of matter-qubit (spin) information. The chiral behavior occurs despite the non-chiral geometry and material of the waveguides. Using dot registration techniques we achieve a quantum emitter deterministically positioned at a chiral point and realize spin-path conversion by design. We measure and compare the phenomena in single mode nanobeam and photonic crystal waveguides. The former is much more tolerant to dot position, exhibits experimental spin-path readout as high as 95 +/- 5% and has potential to serve as the basis of future spin-logic and network implementations.

Abstract

Advances in nanotechnology provide techniques for the realisation of integrated quantum-optical circuits for on-chip quantum information processing(QIP). The indistinguishable single photons, required for such devices can be generated by parametric down-conversion, or from quantum emitters such as colour centres and quantum dots(QDs). Among these, semiconductor QDs offer distinctive capabilities including on-demand operation, coherent control, frequency tuning and compatibility with semiconductor nanotechnology. Moreover, the coherence of QD photons can be significantly enhanced in resonance fluorescence(RF) approaching at its best the coherence of the excitation laser. However, the implementation of QD RF in scalable on-chip geometries remains challenging due to the need to suppress stray laser photons. Here we report on-chip QD RF coupled into a single-mode waveguide with negligible resonant laser background and show that the coherence is enhanced compared to off-resonant excitation. The results pave the way to a novel class of integrated quantum-optical devices for on-chip QIP with embedded resonantly-driven quantum emitters.

Abstract

The complement of cell surface proteins, collectively referred to as the surfaceome, is a useful indicator of normal differentiation processes, and the development of pathologies such as osteoarthritis (OA). We employed biochemical and proteomic tools to explore the surfaceome and to define biomarkers in chondrogenic progenitor cells (CPC) derived from human OA knee articular cartilage. These cells have great therapeutic potential, but their unexplored biology limits their clinical application. We performed biotinylation combined with glycocapture and high throughput shotgun proteomics to define the surface proteome of human bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) and human CPCs. We prepared cell surface protein-enriched fractions from MSCs and CPCs, and then a proteomic approach was used to compare and evaluate protein changes between undifferentiated MSCs and CPCs. 1256 proteins were identified in the study, of which 791 (63%) were plasma membrane, cell surface or extracellular matrix proteins. Proteins constituting the surfaceome were annotated and categorized. Our results provide, for the first time, a repository of quantitative proteomic data on the surfaceome of two closely related cell types relevant to cartilage biology and OA. These results may provide novel insights into the transformation of the surfaceome during chondrogenic differentiation and phenotypic changes during OA development.

Abstract

Scalable quantum technologies may be achieved by faithful conversion between matter qubits and photonic qubits in integrated circuit geometries. Within this context, quantum dots possess well-defined spin states (matter qubits), which couple efficiently to photons. By embedding them in nanophotonic waveguides, they provide a promising platform for quantum technology implementations. 10. Concordances KWIC and Complete: An Appraisal.

Abstract

The application of computer techniques to the making of concordances and indexes has brought about many innovations including the KWIC format and the exhaustive concordance. Although claims for the merits of these concordances are not always justified, the KWIC method offers the following advantages: (1) the detection of formulaic expressions and repeated word patterns; (2) simplicity; (3) speed; (4) maximization of computer use; and (5) minimization of the editor's role. The traditional concordance was designed by philologists and is problematic not only because of its sheer bulk, but also because it tends to assume that word frequency is directly proportional to unimportance and it tends to favor only literary interests, almost neglecting sizeable linguistic interests. Solutions to size and economic problems are: (1) to make tapes available to researchers who have access to a computer; (2) to print references only in an appendix to the main concordance; (3) to issue sub-concordances on microfilm or microfiche; and (4) to publish as cheaply as possible a series of sub-concordances as fascicules, each containing pages according to specific categories and criteria. Traditionally a tool of philologists, concordances are perhaps not the best research instrument for linguists. But the concordance, improved by the refinements and analytical devices provided by the editor and computer together, will continue to serve the philologist well in the future. (Author/MHP)

26. Geochronological challenges posed by continuously developing tectonometamorphic systems: insights from Rb-Sr mica ages from the Cycladic Blueschist Belt, Syros (Greece).

Abstract

Is metamorphism and its causative tectonics best viewed as a series of punctuated events or as a continuum? This question is addressed through examination of the timing of exhumation of the Cycladic Blueschist Belt (CBB). The cause of scatter beyond analytical error in Rb-Sr geochronology was investigated using a suite of 39 phengite samples. Rb-Sr ages have been measured on phengite microsamples drilled from specific microstructures in thin sections of calcschists and metabasites from the CBB on Syros. The majority are from samples that have well-preserved blueschist facies mineral assemblages with limited greenschist facies overprint. The peak metamorphic temperatures involved are below the closure temperature for white mica so that crystallization ages are expected to be preserved. This is supported by the coexistence of different ages in microstructures of different relative age; in one sample phengite from the dominant extensional blueschist facies fabric preserves an age of 35 Ma while post-tectonic mica, millimetres away, has an age of 26 Ma. The results suggest that micro-sampling techniques linked to detailed microstructural analysis are critical to understanding the timing and duration of deformation in tectonometamorphic systems. North of the Serpentinite Belt in northern Syros, phengite Rb-Sr ages are generally between 53 and 46 Ma, comparable to previous dates from this area. South of the Serpentinite Belt phengite in blueschist facies assemblages associated with extensional fabrics linked to exhumation have ages that range from 42 Ma down to c. 30 Ma indicating that extensional deformation while still under blueschist facies conditions continued until 30 Ma. No age measurements on samples with unambiguous evidence of deformation under greenschist facies conditions were made; two rocks with greenschist facies assemblages gave phengite ages that overlap with the younger blueschist samples, suggesting blueschist facies phengite is preserved in these rocks. Two samples yielded ages below 27 Ma; one is from a post-tectonic microstructure, the other from a greenschist in which the fabric developed during earlier blueschist facies conditions. These ages are consistent with previous evidence of greenschist facies conditions from c. 25 Ma onwards. The data are consistent with a model of deformation that is continuous on a regional scale. 28. A hydrous melting and fractionation model for mid-ocean ridge basalts: Application to the Mid-Atlantic Ridge near the Azores

Abstract

The major element, trace element, and isotopic composition of mid-ocean ridge basalt glasses affected by the Azores hotspot are strongly correlated with H2O content of the glass. Distinguishing the relative importance of source chemistry and potential temperature in ridge-hotspot interaction therefore requires a comprehensive model that accounts for the effect of H2O in the source on melting behavior and for the effect of H2O in primitive liquids on the fractionation path. We develop such a model by coupling the latest version of the MELTS algorithm to a model for partitioning of water among silicate melts and nominally anhydrous minerals. We find that much of the variation in all major oxides except TiO2 and a significant fraction of the crustal thickness anomaly at the Azores platform are explained by the combined effects on melting and fractionation of up to ~700 ppm H2O in the source with only a small thermal anomaly, particularly if there is a small component of buoyantly driven active flow associated with the more H2O-rich melting regimes. An on-axis thermal anomaly of ~35°C in potential temperature explains the full crustal thickness increase of ~4 km approaching the Azores platform, whereas a ≥75°C thermal anomaly would be required in the absence of water or active flow. The polybaric hydrous melting and fractionation model allows us to solve for the TiO2, trace element and isotopic composition of the H2O-rich component in a way that self-consistently accounts for the changes in the melting and fractionation regimes resulting from enrichment, although the presence and concentration in the enriched component of elements more compatible than Dy cannot be resolved.
