The only advanced credential exam for health educators, The Master Certified Health Education Specialist (MCHES), involved a seven-year process. The process began in December 2004, with the information from the Competency Update Project (CUP) report that health educators practice at entry- and advanced-levels of practice. In October 2011, the date of the first MCHES exam, the process will be complete. Presented in this paper are the decisions and steps the National Commission for Health Education Credentialing (NCHEC) made from 2004 to 2011 to bring advanced-level certification to health education specialists. Examined in this article is whether it is ethical for health educators to try to change the health behaviors of people who are informed about the risks of engaging in an unhealthy behavior, have the skills and confidence to change the behavior, but nevertheless choose not to change. Questions are raised about whether interventions for such precontemplators are manipulative and incompatible with the ethical principle of individual autonomy and whether health educators who attempt to change the behaviors of these precontemplators violate the "Code of Ethics" for the Health Education Profession. The article concludes with the argument that health educators violate the "Code of Ethics" if they knowingly subject informed, efficacious people who have decided not to change to interventions designed to promote change.

Abstract Transposable element (TE) insertions are responsible for a significant fraction of spontaneous germ line mutations reported in inbred mouse strains. This major contribution of TEs to the mutational landscape in mouse contrasts with the situation in human, where their relative contribution as germ line insertional mutagens is much lower. In this focussed review, we provide comprehensive lists of TE-induced mouse mutations, discuss the different TE types involved in these insertional mutations and elaborate on particularly interesting cases. We also discuss differences and similarities between the mutational role of TEs in mice and humans.

Abstract Transposable elements (TEs) are major components of eukaryotic genomes. However, the extent of their impact on genome evolution, function, and disease remain a matter of intense interrogation. The rise of genomics and large-scale functional assays has shed new light on the multi-faceted activities of TEs and implies that they should no longer be marginalized. Here, we introduce the fundamental properties of TEs and their complex interactions with their cellular environment, which are crucial to understanding their impact and manifold consequences for organismal biology. While we draw examples primarily from mammalian systems, the core concepts outlined here are relevant to a broad range of organisms.

This study evaluated a 4-week program to increase the time families spent engaging in outdoor activity. Parents were provided strategies to increase family outdoor activity and locations to be active. Sixteen families completed the program. Duration and number of family outdoor activity bouts per week, type of activities, locations, and family member attendance were measured using logs. Pre/post surveys were conducted to determine the usefulness of providing educational resources and maps. Compared to baseline (216.1±127.3 min/week), family outdoor activity for weeks 1 (316.1±180.2 min/week), 2 (351.1±209.1 min/week), and 4 (317.5±186.8 min/week) were significantly greater at follow-up. At follow-up, parents reported increased regular exercise and encouragement for their child to be active. Children reported adults engaged in physical activity with them and increased transportation to places to be active. This novel program increased family outdoor activity levels and contributes to limited research on strategies to increase outdoor activity in youth.

Summary: The ribosome is an RNA-protein complex that is essential for translation in all domains of life. The structural and catalytic core of the ribosome is its ribosomal RNA (rRNA). While mutations in ribosomal protein (RP) genes are known drivers of oncogenesis, oncogenic rRNA variants have remained elusive. We identify a cancer-specific single-nucleotide variation in 18S rRNA at nucleotide 1248.U in up to 45.9% of patients with colorectal carcinoma (CRC) and present across >22 cancer types. This is the site of a unique hyper-modified base, 1-methyl-3-α-amino-α-carboxyl-propyl pseudouridine (m1acp3Ψ), a >1-billion-years-conserved RNA modification at the peptidyl decoding site of the ribosome. A subset of CRC tumors we call hypo-m1acp3Ψ shows sub-stoichiometric m1acp3Ψ modification, unlike normal control tissues. An m1acp3Ψ knockout model and hypo-m1acp3Ψ patient tumors share a translational signature characterized by highly abundant ribosomal proteins. Thus, m1acp3Ψ-deficient rRNA forms an uncharacterized class of “onco-ribosome” which may serve as a chemotherapeutic target for treating cancer patients.

Through the 6-year National Health Educator Competencies Update Project (CUP), in 2004, the National Commission for Health Education Credentialing, Inc. (NCHEC), American Association for Health Education (AAHE), and Society for Public Health Education (SOPHE) completed verification of advanced-level competencies and subcompetencies for health educators. Along with this verification, it was recommended in the CUP report that NCHEC should consider implementing advanced-level certification to parallel advanced health education practice. Similarly, during this same period, the National Task Force on Accreditation (NTFA) recommended that entry and advanced levels of practice be distinguished. To glean health educators' input regarding advanced-level certification, an online feasibility survey study, under the direction of the NCHEC CUP Implementation Committee, was conducted by Professional Examination Service (PES). This survey was available for health educators to complete online from October 10-29, 2006. This paper presents a summary and interpretation of the results of the Advanced Certification Feasibility Survey, which was submitted to the NCHEC CUP Implementation Committee in January 2007. Abstract Cancer arises from a series of genetic and epigenetic changes, which result in abnormal expression or mutational activation of oncogenes, as well as suppression/inactivation of tumor suppressor genes. Aberrant expression of coding genes or long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) with oncogenic properties can be caused by translocations, gene amplifications, point mutations or other less characterized mechanisms. One such mechanism is the inappropriate usage of normally dormant, tissue-restricted or cryptic enhancers or promoters that serve to drive oncogenic gene expression. Dispersed across the human genome, endogenous retroviruses (ERVs) provide an enormous reservoir of autonomous gene regulatory modules, some of which have been co-opted by the host during evolution to play important roles in normal regulation of genes and gene networks. This review focuses on the “dark side” of such ERV regulatory capacity. Specifically, we discuss a growing number of examples of normally dormant or epigenetically repressed ERVs that have been harnessed to drive oncogenes in human cancer, a process we term onco-exaptation, and we propose potential mechanisms that may underlie this phenomenon.

Hundreds of retrovirus-like sequences have features that suggest they might be gene enhancers, but only a small fraction displays gene-regulating activity in experiments on mouse stem cells.

The Presidential Executive Order 13112 for control of invasive species signed by President Clinton illustrates the national concern over the negative impact that nutria (Myocastor coypus) and other non-native, invasive species have on the nation’s natural resources. Nutria are established in 15 states nationwide and cause damage to agricultural crops and natural ecosystems. Despite efforts to control their populations, nutria are found in Maryland throughout the Eastern Shore and in the Potomac and Patuxent Rivers on the Western Shore. Twenty-three federal, state, and private organizations have combined their efforts to develop a three-year pilot plan for nutria control entitled "Marsh Restoration: Nutria Control in Maryland." In 1999 and 2000, funding became available to begin the first year of the three-year pilot effort. The objectives of the pilot program are to develop accurate population estimates, determine effective trapping strategies to maximize nutria harvest and minimize impacts to non-target species, evaluate the effects of population control on nutria home range and movement patterns, determine how population control affects nutria reproductive behavior, determine if the health of nutria populations is influenced by intense harvest pressure, and monitor the effects of intense nutria harvest on vegetative response. Implementation of the control plan will begin during summer 2000.

Background: The use of mobile phones for physical activity (PA) promotion and assessment represents an attractive research area because this technology is characterized by a widespread reach and dynamic features. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to conduct a systematic review of mobile phone-based approaches for encouraging and assessing PA. Methods: Eligible studies were identified through a search of PubMed and PsycINFO and required to address the usability of mobile phones for PA promotion and/or measurement, be written in English, and be published in a peer-reviewed journal between 2010 and 2013. Results: Fifty-two studies were included in this review. The use of mobile phones for PA promotion, assessment, and both promotion and assessment were addressed by 27, 19, and 6 studies, respectively. Out of 26 studies that reported a PA behavior change outcome, 13 observed favorable PA changes, 3 found mixed results, and 10 found no improvements. Ten studies examined the validity of mobile phones for PA assessment and 9 reported favorable outcomes. Participants found mobile phones to be highly acceptable. Discussion: The findings suggest that mobile phones have great potential as a PA promotion and assessment tool among a variety of individuals. Translation to Health Education Practice: Mobile phones may provide practitioners with efficient ways to promote PA and valid ways to assess PA.

With rates of tobacco use among youth in the United States on the rise, further analysis of disproportionately impacted populations, like Native Hawaiian and other Pacific Islanders (NHPIs), is needed. NHPIs face a unique set of challenges compared to other ethnic minorities that contribute to their health disparities from tobacco use. This systematic literature review investigated empirical studies published between 2010–2020 on tobacco use among NHPI youth and young adults. Using comprehensive literature search engines and focused author searches of tobacco researchers in NHPI communities, 7,208 article abstracts were extracted for potential inclusion. Explicit inclusionary and exclusionary criteria were used to identify peer-reviewed articles related to tobacco use correlates and interventions for NHPI youth populations. A total of 17 articles met our criteria for inclusion in this study. Community influences, peer pressure, social status, variety of flavors, craving, and stimulation were correlates found in smoking and vaping for NHPI youth. There were also few published tobacco use prevention and intervention studies focused specifically on NHPI youth. Our study addresses the needs of an under-researched population that is heavily affected by the adverse consequences of short-term and long-term use of cigarettes and e-cigarettes. Additional research should focus on developing effective and culturally relevant interventions to reduce NHPI health disparities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Rates of electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS) use are exponentially increasing in youth and young adults within the United States, including Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) youth in Hawai‘i. Disproportionately high ENDS use rates for AANHPI youth point to the need to understand the empirical literature in this area. A systematic literature review is a prerequisite for programs effectively curbing AANHPI youths’ elevated use of ENDS. This systematic literature review examines empirical studies published between 2010-2020 on ENDS and their use as it applies to AANHPI youth. A total of 11 articles were identified using specific inclusionary and exclusionary criteria in a literature search. Studies described individual and interpersonal correlates to ENDS use. Notably, there were no published ENDS intervention studies detailed to AANHPI youth. Implications of these studies for prevention and social welfare interventions are discussed. Insertions of endogenous retroviruses cause a significant fraction of mutations in inbred mice but not all strains are equally susceptible. Notably, most new Intracisternal A particle (IAP) ERV mutagenic insertions have occurred in C3H mice. We show here that strain-specific insertional polymorphic IAPs accumulate faster in C3H/HeJ mice, relative to other sequenced strains, and that IAP transcript levels are higher in C3H/HeJ embryonic stem (ES) cells compared to other ES cells. To investigate the mechanism for high IAP activity in C3H mice, we identified 61 IAP copies in C3H/HeJ ES cells enriched with H3K4me3 (a mark of active promoters) and, among those tested, all are unmethylated in C3H/HeJ ES cells. Notably, 13 of the 61 are specific to C3H/HeJ and are members of the non-autonomous 1Δ1 IAP subfamily that is responsible for nearly all new insertions in C3H. One copy is full length with intact open reading frames and hence potentially capable of providing proteins in trans to other 1Δ1 elements. This potential “master copy” is present in other strains, including 129, but its 5’ long terminal repeat (LTR) is methylated in 129 ES cells. Thus, the unusual IAP activity in C3H may be due to reduced epigenetic repression coupled with the presence of a master copy.
