This study focuses on the economic consequences of divorce for the elderly. Family incomes of elderly white divorced men and women were compared with their married counterparts for five SES categories. Using t-tests, it was found that, for both genders, incomes for divorced persons were lower than incomes for married persons. Family incomes were regressed on a set of four control variables and a marital status variable. The marital status variable was statistically significant for the total sample for both sexes. Past studies on gender differences in the economic consequences of divorce have been limited to presenting descriptive statistics. This article examines sources of gender differences in the economic ramifications of marital disruption for young non-Hispanic white, black, and Hispanic adults separating or divorcing in the 1980s. Using data from the 1979-88 waves of the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth, the results show that even among a less-advantaged subgroup, marital disruption has more serious consequences for women than men. Although young men, particularly minority men, are not faring well economically in absolute terms, women's postdisruption economic welfare is significantly lower than men's for all race-ethnic groups. Comparison of family incomes of divorced men and women with those of married people using a cross-sectional GSS data set of white people for 1983-87 examines Weitzman's view that men show a 42% improvement and women a 73% deterioration in living conditions in the first year following divorce. Incomes of married people are more than those of divorced people, opposing Weitzman's generalizations and confirming that marital status is vital in determining income. Various studies report an inverse association between socio-economic status and the risk of marital disruption. Using register-based follow-up data on first marriages in Finland intact at the end of 1990 and divorces in 1991-93 (n=21 309), this study aimed at gaining a better understanding of socio-economic differentials in divorce risk by disentangling the influences of various aspects of the socio-economic status of the spouses. Indicators of socioeconomic status include each spouse's education, occupational class, economic activity, and income as well as housing tenure and housing density. When examined individually, divorce risk was inversely associated with socio-economic status for all its various indicators except wife's income. All of these factors had an independent effect on divorce risk. The effect was, however, weak for the spouses' occupational rankings and housing density, and it was positive for the wife's income. Given the multifaceted nature of these socio-economic differentials, it appears unlikely that one single explanation could account for them all.
