The identification of novel mechanisms for superconductivity is a longstanding goal in theoretical physics. In this work, we argue that the combination of repulsive interactions and high magnetic fields can generate electron pairing, phase coherence and superconductivity. Inspired by the large lattice constants of moir\'e materials, which make large flux per unit cell accessible at laboratory fields, we study the triangular lattice Hofstadter-Hubbard model at one-quarter flux quantum per plaquette, where previous literature has argued that a chiral spin liquid separates a weak-coupling integer quantum Hall phase and a strong-coupling topologically-trivial Mott insulator. We argue that topological superconductivity emerges upon doping in the vicinity of the integer quantum Hall to chiral spin liquid transition. We employ exact diagonalization and density matrix renormalization group methods to examine this theoretical scenario and find that electronic pairing indeed occurs above the half-filled ground states not just near the putative critical point but over a remarkably broad range of coupling strengths on both sides of criticality. On the chiral spin liquid side, our results provide a concrete model realization of the storied mechanism of anyon superconductivity. Our study thus establishes a beyond-BCS mechanism for electron pairing in a well-controlled limit, relying crucially on the interplay between electron correlations and band topology.

TeNPy (short for 'Tensor Network Python') is a python library for the simulation of strongly correlated quantum systems with tensor networks. The philosophy of this library is to achieve a balance of readability and usability for new-comers, while at the same time providing powerful algorithms for experts. The focus is on MPS algorithms for 1D and 2D lattices, such as DMRG ground state search, as well as dynamics using TEBD, TDVP, or MPO evolution. Recent advancements in moir\'e engineering motivate study of the behavior of strongly-correlated electrons subject to substantial orbital magnetic flux. We investigate the triangular lattice Hofstadter-Hubbard model at one-quarter flux quantum per plaquette and a density of one electron per site, where geometric frustration has been argued to stabilize a chiral spin liquid phase intermediate between the weak-coupling integer quantum Hall and strong-coupling 120deg antiferromagnetic phases. In this work, we use Density Matrix Renormalization Group methods and analytical arguments to analyze the compactification of the Hofstadter-Hubbard model to cylinders of finite radius. We introduce a glide particle-hole symmetry operation which for odd-circumference cylinders, we show, is spontaneously broken at the quantum Hall to spin liquid transition. We further demonstrate that the transition is associated with a diverging correlation length of a charge-neutral operator. For even-circumference cylinders the transition is associated with a dramatic quantitative enhancement in the correlation length upon threading external magnetic flux. Altogether, we argue that the 2+1D CSL-IQH transition is in fact continuous and features critical correlations of the charge density and other spin rotationally-invariant observables.

The highly tunable nature of synthetic quantum materials -- both in the solid-state and cold atom contexts -- invites examining which microscopic ingredients aid in the realization of correlated phases of matter such as superconductors. Recent experimental advances in moir\'e materials suggest that unifying the features of the Fermi-Hubbard model and quantum Hall systems creates a fertile ground for the emergence of such phases. Here, we introduce a minimal 2D lattice model that incorporates exactly these features: time-reversal symmetry, band topology, and strong repulsive interactions. By using infinite cylinder density matrix renormalization group methods (cylinder iDMRG), we investigate the ground state phase diagram of this model. We find that it hosts an interaction-induced quantum spin Hall (QSH) insulator and demonstrate that weakly hole-doping this state gives rise to a superconductor at a finite circumference, with indications that this behavior persists on larger cylinders. At the aforementioned circumference, the superconducting phase is surprisingly robust to perturbations including additional repulsive interactions in the pairing channel. By developing a technique to probe the superconducting gap function in iDMRG, we phenomenologically characterize the superconductor. Namely, we demonstrate that it is formed from the weak pairing of holes atop the QSH insulator. Furthermore, we determine the pairing symmetry of the superconductor, finding it to be $p$-wave -- reminiscent of the unconventional superconductivity reported in experiments on twisted bilayer graphene (TBG). Motivated by this, we elucidate structural similarities and differences between our model and those of TBG in its chiral limit. Finally, to provide a more direct experimental realization, we detail an implementation of our Hamiltonian in a system of cold fermionic alkaline-earth atoms in an optical lattice., Comment: 27 pages (with 8 figures) + 35 pages supplementary (with 14 figures)

Language models demonstrate both quantitative improvement and new qualitative capabilities with increasing scale. Despite their potentially transformative impact, these new capabilities are as yet poorly characterized. In order to inform future research, prepare for disruptive new model capabilities, and ameliorate socially harmful effects, it is vital that we understand the present and near-future capabilities and limitations of language models. To address this challenge, we introduce the Beyond the Imitation Game benchmark (BIG-bench). BIG-bench currently consists of 204 tasks, contributed by 450 authors across 132 institutions. Task topics are diverse, drawing problems from linguistics, childhood development, math, common-sense reasoning, biology, physics, social bias, software development, and beyond. BIG-bench focuses on tasks that are believed to be beyond the capabilities of current language models. We evaluate the behavior of OpenAI's GPT models, Google-internal dense transformer architectures, and Switch-style sparse transformers on BIG-bench, across model sizes spanning millions to hundreds of billions of parameters. In addition, a team of human expert raters performed all tasks in order to provide a strong baseline. Findings include: model performance and calibration both improve with scale, but are poor in absolute terms (and when compared with rater performance); performance is remarkably similar across model classes, though with benefits from sparsity; tasks that improve gradually and predictably commonly involve a large knowledge or memorization component, whereas tasks that exhibit "breakthrough" behavior at a critical scale often involve multiple steps or components, or brittle metrics; social bias typically increases with scale in settings with ambiguous context, but this can be improved with prompting., Comment: 27 pages, 17 figures + references and appendices, repo: https://github.com/google/BIG-bench

We consider a magnetic skyrmion crystal formed at the surface of a topological insulator. Incorporating the exchange interaction between the helical Dirac surface states and the periodic N\'eel or Bloch skyrmion texture, we obtain the resulting electronic band structure and discuss the constraints that symmetries impose on the energies and Berry curvature. We find substantive qualitative differences between the N\'eel and Bloch cases, with the latter generically permitting a multiband low energy tight-binding representation whose parameters are tightly constrained by symmetries. We explicitly compute the associated Wannier orbitals, which resemble the ringlike chiral bound states of helical Dirac fermions coupled to a single skyrmion in a ferromagnetic background. We construct a two-band tight-binding model with real nearest-neighbor hoppings which captures the salient topological features of the low-energy bands. Our results are relevant to magnetic topological insulators (TIs), as well as to TI-magnetic thin film heterostructures, in which skyrmion crystals may be stabilized., Comment: 21 pages, 7 figures

Skyrmions are spatially localized magnetic swirls which carry a nonzero integer topological charge. We study crystals of skyrmions in a two-dimensional ferromagnet model with chiral interactions induced by the presence of broken inversion symmetry. We show that non-linear quartic mode-coupling terms allowed by symmetry enhances the Zeeman-field range over which the skyrmion-crystal phase remains stable. Furthermore, it leads to a significant dependence of the lattice constant of this spin crystal over this wide field range. Conduction electrons coupled to such a tunable spin crystal are shown to experience a Berry-flux density which varies with the Zeeman field. Such tunable skyrmion crystals provide a distinct realization of a Berry-Hofstadter butterfly, resulting in a phenomenon we term "topological quantum oscillations" in the electronic density of states and associated observables.
