Itaconate, an abundant metabolite produced by macrophages upon interferon-γ stimulation, possesses both antibacterial and immunomodulatory properties. Despite its crucial role in immunity and antimicrobial control, its mechanism of action and dissimilation are poorly understood. Here, we demonstrate that infection of mice with Mycobacterium tuberculosis increases itaconate levels in lung tissues. We also show that exposure to itaconate inhibits M. tuberculosis growth in vitro, in macrophages, and mice. We report that exposure to sodium itaconate (ITA) interferes with the central carbon metabolism of M. tuberculosis. In addition to the inhibition of isocitrate lyase (ICL), we demonstrate that itaconate inhibits aldolase and inosine monophosphate (IMP) dehydrogenase in a concentration-dependent manner. Previous studies have shown that Rv2498c from M. tuberculosis is the bona fide (S)-citramalyl-CoA lyase, but the remaining components of the pathway remain elusive. Here, we report that Rv2503c and Rv3272 possess itaconate:succinyl-CoA transferase activity, and Rv2499c and Rv3389c possess itaconyl-CoA hydratase activity. Relative to the parental and complemented strains, the ΔRv3389c strain of M. tuberculosis was attenuated for growth in itaconate-containing medium, in macrophages, mice, and guinea pigs. The attenuated phenotype of ΔRv3389c strain of M. tuberculosis is associated with a defect in the itaconate dissimilation and propionyl-CoA detoxification pathway. This study thus reveals that multiple metabolic enzymes are targeted by itaconate in M. tuberculosis. Furthermore, we have assigned the two remaining enzymes responsible for the degradation of itaconic acid into pyruvate and acetyl-CoA. Segmented assimilation in its current U.S.-centric incarnation is more valuable as a sensitizing concept that suggests where analysts should look rather than as a transportable causal theory of intergenerational change. One of the assumptions behind assimilation theory is that there is a policy and normative consensus that immigrants should integrate into the population. Many states want labor migrants and refugees to be temporary, even if the reality is long-term residence. Their policy goal is that immigrants should not assimilate and there should not even be a second generation. Specifying temporal and spatial scope conditions and extending the notion of segmentation beyond ethnoracial groups to include social segments in societies of origin and destination are practical ways to push this concept toward a more broadly applicable theory. A highly productive derivational process, diminutive suffixation in Spanish (e.g., gatito ~ gatiko/gatico 'little/well-known/beloved/awful cat' < gato 'cat') has received much attention in the morphology–phonology interface literature. The present study contributes a novel comparative analysis of a dissimilatory alternation between diminutive suffix allomorphs -ito/a and -ico/a (-iko/a) across three Hispano-Romance varieties. In Judeo-Spanish, the voiceless dorsal stop [k] of default -iko/a dissimilates to coronal [t] after any dorsal segment [k, ɡ, ɡʷ, x, w] in the base-final syllable. In Colombian Spanish, the voiceless coronal stop [t] of default -ito/a dissimilates to dorsal [k] after only an identical [t] in the base-final syllable. By contrast, Castilian Spanish -ito/a does not dissimilate, thereby providing a baseline for comparison. All three varieties allow for optional iteration of the suffix, which conveys greater smallness or endearment than the simple diminutive, e.g., Castilian Spanish gatitito 'little/beloved kitty', without dissimilation. Iterated diminutives in Colombian Spanish show two patterns of dissimilation, which have not been fully acknowledged in the previous literature. For example, either (i) [it] and [ik] alternate to avoid adjacent identical syllable onsets, e.g., gat[ikitíko], or (ii) [it] is iterated until alternating with word-final [ik], e.g., gat[ititíko]. In all three Hispano-Romance varieties, base-final unstressed vowels are deleted before a vowel-initial diminutive suffix, followed by unstressed -o/a, and stress (indicated by an acute accent) is shifted rightward onto the penultimate syllable of the diminutive word. Vowel deletion and stress shift apply recursively in iterated diminutives. We propose an Optimality Theory analysis of these alternations in terms of suffix allomorphy that is phonologically conditioned by consonantal place dissimilation. The analysis is formalized as an interaction among constraints that enforce prosodic unmarkedness, output–output correspondence, allomorph preference, and similarity avoidance. Research examining the socioeconomic outcomes of migrants and their children often compares them with native populations in host countries. However, there is a limited understanding of how they fare relative to non-migrants in their origin countries. This study uses large-scale census microdata (2001–2012) to address this gap. It examines the educational attainment of Bolivian-origin youth born in Argentina, comparing their outcomes with those of their peers in Bolivia and native Argentines. In doing so, this study sheds light on the often-overlooked South-South migration corridor. The analysis - which focuses on individuals aged 19 to 25 living with their parents - shows that Bolivian-origin youth in Argentina are, on average, more likely to complete secondary education than their native Argentine peers. However, they are less likely to attain this educational level than their counterparts residing in Bolivia. Further examination reveals variations by gender, parental education, and census wave. How do immigrant parents transmit their origin-country fertility ideals to their children? Drawing on a national sample of immigrants and their children in France (the 'Trajectories et Origins' survey), this study argues that the two main aspects of cultural practices in migrant families, religion and language, influence the fertility socialisation of immigrant children in different ways. Religion, often regulating family life and sexuality, directly shapes the ideal family size of immigrant children. Among children of immigrants, those growing up in Muslim families and those in highly religious families desire more children. By contrast, the use of parental origin-country language does not directly affect ideal family size but instead moderates country-of-origin influence. Those who (solely or partly) spoke their parental origin-country language at home during childhood conform more closely to parental origin-country fertility ideals than those who grew up speaking French. A growing literature examines parental sex preferences for their children among migrant communities in Western countries and investigates whether migrants’ preferences align with those of the native population. Changes in preference may indicate cultural and structural assimilation into the destination country. We adopted a dissimilation from origins conceptual perspective and compared migrants’ behavior to that of their non-migrant peers in the origin country. We used the unique 2000 Families dataset, which includes multi-generational data on both early labor migrants to Europe and non-migrants from the same regions of origin in Turkey. The study provides the first examination of parental sex preferences for their children and fertility among Turkish migrants and their descendants in Europe and their non-migrant counterparts in Turkey. Since the end of the Cold War, millions of migrants from Eastern Europe have sought better opportunities in Western European countries, yet few studies have assessed the impact of such moves on these migrants' children. In the aim of isolating a 'treatment effect' of migration on educational outcomes, this study analyzes Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) scores from 2012, 2015, and 2018 for adolescents born in twelve Eastern European countries and living in eight Western European countries. It employs propensity-score matching within a homeland dissimilation framework, comparing immigrants' outcomes on reading, math, and science assessments to similar stay-at-homes in their countries of origin. In unadjusted comparisons to their counterparts who remained behind, migrant children attain lower scores across all three subjects. Once immigrant children are matched to non-immigrants with similar propensities to migrate, the disparity for math scores disappears, while those for reading and science remain. Disparities are wider for adolescents who come from within the EU, migrate at older ages, or speak a foreign language at home. This paper indicates the need for policymakers and educational administrators to better handle the negative academic effects that migration can have on children from within Europe. Dissimilative jakan'e in SW Russian dialects applies to nonhigh vowels in pretonic position. One finds /i/ before accented low vowels, /a/ before accented high vowels. We can explain the phenomenon without dissimilation. There is vowel reduction (shortening) before lower relatively longer accented vowels, followed by a change of the reduced vowel to /i/ after a palatalized consonant. All these dialects originally had seven vowels, four vowel heights. There is significant dialectal variation in the treatment of the nonhigh vowel before accented mid vowels and the influence of surrounding palatalized consonants. To account for all the variants, we must start from an early stage when there was continuous gradient of duration in the pretonic vowel, negatively correlated with the duration of the accented vowel. This study aimed at investigating the English phonological process of characters’ pronunciation while pronouncing the English words in the Black Panther movie. The characters of this movie used the dialect of isiXhosa which is spoken widely in Southern Africa when speaking English. The characters developed the English or they signed phonological disorder. This study was researched qualitatively by using Lass’ theory of phonological process. This study is concerned with assimilation, dissimilation, deletion, and insertion. The result of this study identified that regressive assimilation, progressive assimilation, reciprocal assimilation, aphaeresis, syncopation, apocopation, prothesis, and epenthesis existed. Paragoge and dissimilation were not developed. Aphaeresis showed the highest number of occurrences. Mostly the phonemes arose in /h/ /ɾ/ /j/ /k/ /d/ /t/ /n/, /ð/, /θ/, and /æ/, /ɜ:/, /ə/. /ɾ/ was produced with quick and strong vibration in a syllable, and it was solely deleted in the coda of a syllable, /h/ was deleted by other consonant, the mutual consonants /t/ and /j/ created /ʧ/ and /d/ and /j/ created /dʒ/, /ð/ and /θ/ converted to /d/ and /t/, and schwa converted to /ʌ/. Aphaeresis deletion constructed English contraction. Some phonological process phenomena did not corroborate the Lass’ theory. The phonological process occurred in non-native English speakers due to the influence of L1 pronunciation on L2 pronunciation.

As public attitudes toward gender roles in Western societies become increasingly liberal, Muslim immigrants and their children in Europe are regarded as conservative and unassimilated. This study treats acculturation as a process by which immigrants and their children shift from the attitude distribution in their origin country to that of their settlement country, and distinguishes the influence of Islam and origin-country gender norms on Muslim immigrants' and their children's gender role attitudes. Using data on gender role attitudes from 32 European settlement countries and 98 origin countries, the study models the relative influence of origin and settlement contexts on 25,220 first- and second-generation immigrants in Europe. Similar to previous studies, this study finds that Muslim immigrants have more traditional gender role attitudes than non-Muslim immigrants when controlling for the effect of origin-country gender norms. However, there is no evidence that Muslims are more attached to their origin country's gender norms than non-Muslims. Instead, Muslim immigrants' attitudes about gender norms are more similar to those in the settlement society than those of non-Muslim immigrants: Unlike their foreign-born parents, second-generation Muslims are as liberal as non-Muslim populations. Previous research on similarity avoidance has focused on such phonological factors as featural similarity and adjacency. This paper additionally investigates the phonology-morphology interface and draws attention to morphological and lexical effects of similarity avoidance. Avoidance of identical or similar sounds may give rise to a variety of strategies, including periphrastic category formation, an unexpected allomorph of the stem or affix and a lexical gap. It is argued that, although similarity avoidance has a universal basis in language processing, the various strategies to implement it are construction specific. In particular, it is shown that one construction may exhibit a different scope of OCP effects than another, which entails that the constraints regulating OCP effects should be morphosyntactically indexed, in turn requiring reference to multiple cophonologies with distinct properties. A novel finding is that cophonologies may be delimited by the syntactic category of the base of category formation. Drawing on the insight of Construction Morphology, the analysis represents dissimilation as an interaction of construction-specific OCP constraints with schemas that include reference to the base. In order to derive the gradience of OCP effects, the relevant constraints are ranked on the basis of a similarity metric and formal complexity. The proposed constraint-based analysis aims to represent the construction-specific strategies for dealing with dissimilation and capture the observed gradience of the pressure. The representation of affricates remains an unsettled issue in phonology. The main question is whether affricates should be treated as simple or complex segments. In the former view, affricates are stops specified for an additional feature, such as [strident]; in the latter, affricates are complex segments specified for [+continuant] and [–continuant] in an unordered fashion. Using the framework of Optimality Theory, this paper investigates similarity avoidance effects in Basque under the two competing theories of representation. The posited OCP effects involve the avoidance of [strident] and [–continuant] clusters. Importantly, the complex segment approach requires the use of two additional constraints militating against [+continuant] and [+obstruent] clusters. The analysis successfully accounts for the imperfective formation data as well as for other processes in Basque, such as simplification of stop clusters, stop+fricative coalescence and lenition of voiced obstruents. Additionally, the article discusses asymmetries in consonant mutations connected with the OCP effects. In particular, the preference of surface fricative+stop clusters over stop+fricative clusters is attributed to a high-ranked markedness constraint, NOAFFRICATECONTRAST. An important conclusion of the analysis is that the complex segment approach creates unnecessary complications, as the parallel framework allows to maintain satisfactory generalizations within the simple segment approach.

The purpose of this discussion is to find out the process of changing loanwords and the form or type of loanwords that occur. The research method used is a descriptive method. This methodology focuses more on the “what” of the research subject rather than the “why” of the research subject. Data collection used in this study is content analysis and library techniques from literature sources such as dictionaries. Data analysis used in this study is the translational equivalent method. The results of this study found that the loanwords on Lampung language from Arabic through morphophonological processes in the form of sound attenuation, sound reinforcement, sound relaxation, addition of sound, reduction of multiple consonants, dissimilation, and aferesis. Then, the types of loanwords produced by the Lampung language from Arabic Language are in the form of full absorption patterns, partial absorption and pronunciation adjusment. This study contributes to the wealth of linguistic studies, especially Arabic and Lampung language which are widely spoken by the local community.

The Mycenaean personal name wa-ra-qi-si-ro has been interpreted as the older variant of wa-ra-pi-si-ro (PY, MY), but this hypothesis comes up against several phonetic problems. This paper proposes two alternative explanations of wa-ra-qi-si-ro: either /Wrakwsilos/, a clipping of *Wrakwsi-lāhos, compound of the root *u̯ergu̯-/*u̯regu̯- "throw" and *lāho- "stone", or /Wrankwsilos/, a nickname derived from the adjective attested in later Greek ῥαμψός "crooked". There have been a lot of debates over the relationality between spatiality and temporality in extant migration research. In terms of space, several strands of research have focused on exploring migrants’ strategies for migration and relocation, implicitly considering migration as a complete sojourn. However, migrants tend to establish and maintain transnational ties across spaces, making migration an on-going process. Others have examined how migrants sustain transnational activities and relationships over time. Migration, in the latter sense, becomes a complex process involving multiple times and spaces. Migrants’ mobilities are shaped and reshaped by their past memories, present relocation experiences, and aspirations for the future, as well as the influences of the immobilities of others and things across spaces. This raises theoretical questions about how time is embedded in space and what time and space mean to migrants. This paper argues that the core of the debates is grounded in the ways migrants experience subjectivities in defining what their mobilities mean to them. This argument is presented through a literature analysis of key research on the interrelated issues of temporality and spatiality, roots and routes, as well as assimilation and dissimilation that partly contribute to the meanings of mobilities. It offers an overview of current research on transnationalism and advances the current debates on temporality and spatiality. In this paper, temporality and spatiality in migration are conceptualized as dynamic and intertwined entities, rather than fixed or linear processes. This conceptualization is hoped to clarify the ways in which researchers often become divergent in their research strands, leaving gaps in understandings of current migration schemes.

T3 sandhi in Mandarin is a phonological alternation where two adjacent T3-T3 tones are not allowed and become T[2]-T3. Although this phenomenon has been extensively studied in previous work, concerns about how T3 sandhi is represented in the mental lexicon remain controversial. We approached the issue of representation in a series of cross-modal priming experiments, including two semantic priming experiments with and without context. Our results indicated that T2 failed to prime a target beginning with T3 in a non-sandhi context. However, both T2 and T3 were able to induce semantic activation when appropriate contextual information was present. Conversely, when such information was absent, only T3 activated the lexical entry. Thus, our study suggests that T3 is specified, as expected for dissimilation, and T2 is resolved by a re-writing rule only under appropriate contextual information. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Research commonly compares the educational outcomes of migrants and the second generation to their native peers in destination countries, often finding the former groups lagging behind in education. Their outcomes are rarely compared to their non-migrant peers in the origin countries. Using the dissimilation from origins perspective, we ask whether Turkish-origin men and women in Europe benefit from migration by comparing their educational outcomes to non-migrants in Turkey. At the same time, we comparatively examine the intergenerational transmission of education to determine to what extent individuals capitalise on their parents and grandparents' resources. Analysing the novel 2000 Families data, we show that migrants and their descendants in Europe obtain higher levels of education than their non-migrant peers in Turkey. While both men and women experience educational benefits from migration, women's gains are higher. Another salient finding is that Turkish-origin parents in Europe are less able to pass on their socioeconomic resources to their children than their counterparts in Turkey. The fact that human language is highly structured and that, moreover, the way it is structured shows striking similarities in the world's languages has been addressed from two different perspectives. The first, and more traditional, generative hypothesis is that the similarities are due to an innate language faculty. There is an inborn 'grammar' with universal principles that manifest themselves in each language and cross-linguistic variation arises due to a different parameter setting of universal principles. A second perspective is that there is no inborn, innate language faculty, but that instead structure emerges from language usage. This paper purports to develop and illustrate a third perspective, according to which the structural similarities in human languages are the result of the way the cognitive system works in perception. Migration research developed significantly in the past decades. However, with the life course approach and the concept of transnational migration, there are still two different, as yet largely unconnected conceptual perspectives on migration. Both approaches have their merits but also their shortcomings. This paper tries to overcome these shortcomings by combining the advantages of both perspectives to suggest a unified theoretical concept of transnational life courses (TNLC). TNLC builds on the multidimensional understanding of transnational migration research that (potential) migrants live in multiple social and cultural spaces leading to parallel assimilation and dissimilation processes. This perspective is merged with the life course approach with its chronologically ordered understanding of causality relying on preceding determinants and subsequent outcomes in form of events and periods. Based on data provided by the German Emigration and Remigration Panel Study (GERPS) some simple empirical analyses were conducted to illustrate the potential of the TNLC approach. Grassmann's Law (=GL) is generally regarded as a quintessential example of regular sound change, though dissimilation processes are generally said to be quite rare and sporadic. In the present paper, evidence is presented aiming to show "the phonetic prehistory" of Grassmann's Law in Greek, namely a diachronic stage during which GL acts in all but regular fashion. In particular, especially in some dialectal areas, some forms retain the original diaspirate stem up until Classical epoque (V–IV c. BC). Moreover, the presence of an opposite process, that is the assimilation (generally regressive) between aspirated segments, is also documented. Both of these aspects seem to show a lexically constrained spread of such a change. Its relatively late regularity can be explained as a process implemented by phonological constraints, which intervene at some point in the linguistic change. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Co-occurrence restrictions on Biblical Hebrew root consonants have received thorough treatment in the specialized literature. However, combinations involving glides on the one hand, and nominal roots on the other, have received very little attention. The aim of this paper is to argue for an incompatibility between medial consonants and final glides in defective nouns: a final w cannot generally follow a homorganic medial root consonant, viz. labial p, b, m and velar k, g, q. The III-w roots are rare: they came about as a result of a well-documented historical process and are found almost only in nominal roots. The purpose of this discussion is to find out the process of changing loanwords and the form or type of loanwords that occur. The research method used is a descriptive method. This methodology focuses more on the “what” of the research subject rather than the “why” of the research subject. Data collection used in this study is content analysis and library techniques from literature sources such as dictionaries. Data analysis used in this study is the translational equivalent method. The results of this study found that the loanwords on Lampung language from Arabic through morphophonological processes in the form of sound attenuation, sound reinforcement, sound relaxation, addition of sound, reduction of multiple consonants, dissimilation, and aferesis. Then, the types of loanwords produced by the Lampung language from Arabic Language are in the form of full absorption patterns, partial absorption and pronunciation adjusment. This study contributes to the wealth of linguistic studies, especially Arabic and Lampung language which are widely spoken by the local community. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper shows that a postalveolar co-occurrence restriction (Obligatory Contour Principle, OCP) is a productive component of Slovenian phonology. We first examine whether an apparent OCP-based restriction on derived palatalization, previously observed in corpus data (Jurgec 2016), extends to novel forms via a goodness-rating task. We then explore the generality of the restriction across the lexicon, in non-derived novel words as well as derived forms. Our results confirm that native speakers judge derived palatalized nonce forms to be less acceptable when the stem contains another postalveolar, reflecting the pattern found in the previous corpus study. We further demonstrate that multiple postalveolars are dispreferred even in non-derived words, which suggests that the effect is a general case of OCP. This is additionally supported by effects of proximity (the restriction is stronger for postalveolars separated only by a single vowel than for those further apart from one another) and identity (the restriction is stronger for identical than non-identical postalveolars), reflecting cross-linguistic tendencies in the manifestation of OCP and non-local consonant dissimilation. Finally, we show that the restriction does not appear to apply to all places of articulation, suggesting that the co-occurrence restriction in Slovenian specifically targets postalveolars, and adding a previously unattested pattern to the typology of OCP phenomena on consonant place. Formaldehyde metabolism is prevalent in all organisms, where the accumulation of formaldehyde can be prevented through the activity of dissimilation pathways. Furthermore, formaldehyde assimilatory pathways play a fundamental role in many methylotrophs, which are microorganisms able to build biomass and obtain energy from single- and multicarbon compounds with no carbon–carbon bonds. Here, we describe how formaldehyde is formed in the environment, the mechanisms of its toxicity to the cells, and the cell’s strategies to circumvent it. While their importance is unquestionable for cell survival in formaldehyde rich environments, we present examples of how the modification of native formaldehyde dissimilation pathways in nonmethylotrophic bacteria can be applied to redirect carbon flux toward heterologous, synthetic formaldehyde assimilation pathways introduced into their metabolism. Attempts to engineer methylotrophy into nonmethylotrophic hosts have gained interest in the past decade, with only limited successes leading to the creation of autonomous synthetic methylotrophy. Here, we discuss how native formaldehyde assimilation pathways can additionally be employed as a premise to achieving synthetic methylotrophy. Lastly, we discuss how emerging knowledge on regulation of formaldehyde metabolism can contribute to creating synthetic regulatory circuits applied in metabolic engineering strategies.

This paper reports on a series of artificial grammar learning experiments focused on locality relations in patterns of long-distance consonant agreement (harmony) and disagreement (dissimilation). Participants in experimental conditions were exposed to dependencies affecting stem-suffix pairs of liquids at either a short-range (transvocalic, CVCVLV-LV) or medium-range (beyond-transvocalic, CVLVCV-LV) distance. Two experiments used a poverty of stimulus paradigm, offering no information about the other distance level; participants interpreted short-range interaction as a strictly transvocalic dependency but medium-range interaction as unbounded, generalizing to other distances. Two experiments employed a ‘rich stimulus’ paradigm, where training data unambiguously indicated the absence of any dependency at the other distance; this enabled probing of specific locality patterns, in particular strictly beyond-transvocalic dependencies. The constraint-based Agreement by Correspondence model of non-adjacent consonant interactions predicts such patterns to be possible for dissimilation but not harmony. The results do not support this hypothesis: Participants seem to have serious difficulty learning strictly beyond-transvocalic dependencies of either kind. Our findings are more consistent with recent proposals that the space of learnable phonotactic restrictions is delimited by the Tier-based Strictly 2-Local class of formal languages. Strictly transvocalic and unbounded dependencies lie within this region, whereas strictly beyond-transvocalic dependencies are more complex, falling outside the learner’s hypothesis space.

Processes of unbounded spreading are often claimed to be myopic (e.g. Wilson 2003, McCarthy 2009): the ability of some feature [F] to spread from some segment z to some segment y does not depend on its ability to spread from y to x. Recent work (e.g. Walker 2010, 2014; Jardine 2016) has however cast doubt on the universality of this claim. This paper contributes to the discussion on (non-)myopia on by suggesting that a kind of non-myopic process, trigger deletion, is attested in Gurindji (Pama–Nyungan, McConvell 1988): when the spreading domain contains a certain kind of blocking segment, the spreading trigger deletes. In order to capture this pattern, as well as the extant typology of non-myopic processes, I argue that any successful analysis of unbounded spreading must allow surface candidates to be globally evaluated. This article uses ethnographic data collected since 1994 in Northern Laos to reassess the modalities of Tai cultural and political influence on the Khmu, a Mon‐Khmer‐speaking highland population, and to understand why, after so many years of 'Tai‐isation', distinct identities still exist. For Grant Evans, who conducted fieldwork in Tai‐Dam and Sing Moon (Ksing Mul) villages at the end of the 1980s, the answer lay in the fundamentally dualistic character of Tai‐isation, which both favours assimilation and also tends to perpetuate interethnic boundaries. I will here insist on the fact that Tai‐isation does not imply only the influence of the Tai on the highland peoples' way of life but also how the latter adapt themselves to this influence with their own cultural resources. Tai‐isation is traditionally an inclusive and therefore ambivalent process which can lead both to the assimilation of some highlanders and simultaneously to the emergence of new identity markers, myths or categories, which transform and structure interethnic relationships. State‐building and Lao nationalism have nonetheless profoundly reshaped these dynamics and Lao‐isation now operates in a radically different conceptual framework. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A well-known exception to Grimm's Law, /kʷ/ > /f/ instead of /kʷ/ > /hʷ/, is taken as a starting point and its reflexes in Middle Dutch and Sal-Frankic are discussed. As to the PIE root * leikʷ -, MD and MLG līf- in the compounds līfeigen 'owned by the fief', līftuht 'feudal law', and līfcōp 'feudal transaction fee' is identified as derived from this root under a regular sound change, which is coined Uhlenbeck's Law. Uhlenbeck's Law acts as a resolution of a pansyllabic constraint, not a constraint on roots. As to Sal-Frankic, the new etymology of SF leo- 'related to the tenements", and by extention 'agricultural', sheds new light on the structure of the Lex Salica. It is argued that the tripartite manorial system of land tenure has reflexes in juridical terminology of this archaic legal document. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The narrow goal is to provide a complete account of the doubl-ing effect (Ross 1972) within a Minimalist and Distributed Morphology approach. In particular, I examine the effect within nominals and show that the pattern can be fully captured via the interaction of previous analyses: structural differences based on whether the nominals are complex event nominals (Grimshaw 1990), local dislocation of the -ing affix (Punske 2016), and Distinctness (Richards 2010). I show that this account is fully compatible with full facts of the phenomenon and discuss other possible dissimilation effects that may be explored in the future. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper, I aim to unify the Empty Category Principle of Government Phonology with another (more general) principle: the Obligatory Contour Principle. I show that these principles share numerous structural properties: (i) they prevent sequences of identical entities, and (ii) they trigger the same repair mechanisms. The main difference is substantial: ECP handles empty syllabic components, when OCP handles phonological features. I propose to broaden the definition of OCP in including all phonological entities and I show to what extent this definition can account for the effects of ECP. This article presents a computational analysis of the 185 dissimilation patterns in the typological surveys by Suzuki (1998) and Bennett (2013), and shows that dissimilation is computationally less complex than has been previously shown. Dissimilation patterns are grouped into three general types (basic, blocking and polarity), each of which can be modeled with a subsequential finite-state transducer. This lends support to the claim that phonological patterns are not only regular, but in fact subsequential, which is a more restrictive class of patterns computationally and provides a stronger bound on the types of processes expected in natural language phonology.
