Abstract

We realized GaN based Field Effect Transistors to be used both for direct and heterodyne detection of mm wave / THz signals. Polarization-sensitive, planar antennas were designed and integrated on chip. Device were fabricated relying on an industrial III-V platform. Spectral response in the 0.22-0.38 THz range was acquired. An efficient mixing between gate voltage and drain current was shown.

Abstract

Fabrication of high performance thin­film RF­MEMS structures directly on surface treated LTCC substrates has been investigated and demonstrated. After extensive testing of different LTCC materials as well as the characterization of lapping and polishing conditions, Heraeus CT707 was chosen as substrate material. The fabrication process for high performance thin film patterning and RF­MEMS structures has been developed, optimised and demonstrated. The release process for RF­MEMS structures has been optimised taking also into account the compatibility with LTCC materials. Also, hermetic sealing for the MEMS structures using brazing both with Kovar and ceramic lids has been designed, optimised and demonstrated.

Abstract

Within the EC funded international project OPTHER (OPtically Driven TeraHertz AmplifiERs) a considerable technological effort is being undertaken, in terms of technological development, THz device design and integration. The ultimate goal is to develop a miniaturised THz amplifier based on vacuum-tube principles The main target specifications of the OPTHER amplifier are the following: - Operating frequency: in the band 0.3 to 2 THz - Output power: > 10 mW (10 dBm) - Gain: 10 to 20 dB. The project is in the middle of its duration. Design and simulations have shown that these targets can be met with a proper device configuration and careful optimization of the different parts of the amplifier. Two parallel schemes will be employed for amplifier realisation: THz Drive Signal Amplifier and Optically Modulated Beam THz Amplifier.

Abstract

The European project OPTHER - Optically Driven THz Amplifiers, is focused on the realization of a THz amplifier. This device aims to overcome the actual limitations of THz sources in terms of emitted power, opening the way to the use of THz in monitoring security systems. Two alternative schemes are under study for amplification. In the first one (THz drive signal amplifier) the continuous wave electron beam emitted by the CNT cathode is modulated by the electric field in the interaction structure driven by a THz signal (generated by QCL or laser mixing). In the second one (optically modulated beam THz amplifier), the CNT cathode emits bunches of electrons at the THz rate. Those bunches are transmitted to the interaction structure and generate the amplified output signal.

Abstract

Hybrid organic-inorganic materials doped with zwitterionic push-pull chromophores with high hyperpolarizability have been synthesized via sol-gel, based on glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane (GPTMS) and glycidoxypropylmethyldimethoxysilane (GDMMS). Homogeneous films doped with chromophores, have been obtained using N-hydroxyethylcarbazole as a physical spacer avoiding dye aggregation. The waveguiding properties of the spin-coated doped films electrically poled in N-2 atmosphere showing second harmonic generation measurements, have been preliminarily measured by m-line spectroscopy before and after poling; the feasibility of channel waveguiding structures has been demonstrated.
