1. Spectral properties of the M\'{o}bius function and a random M\'{o}bius model

Abstract

Assuming Sarnak conjecture is true for any singular dynamical process, we prove that the spectral measure of the M\"{o}bius function is equivalent to Lebesgue measure. Conversely, under Elliott conjecture, we establish that the M\"{o}bius function is orthogonal to any uniquely ergodic dynamical system with singular spectrum. Furthermore, using Mirsky Theorem, we find a new simple proof of Cellarosi-Sinai Theorem on the orthogonality of the square of the M\"{o}bius function with respect to any weakly mixing dynamical system. Finally, we establish Sarnak conjecture for a particular random model., Comment: 24 pages, submitted for publication

By applying the supersymmetric approach we rigorously prove smoothness of the averaged density of states for a three dimensional random band matrix ensemble, in the limit of infinite volume and fixed band width. Abstract

In this paper we complete the first step, namely the uniform bound on completely convergent contributions, towards proving that a three dimensional interacting system of Fermions is a Fermi liquid in the sense of Salmhofer. The analysis relies on a direct space decomposition of the propagator, on a bosonic multiscale cluster expansion and on the Hadamard inequality, rather than on a Fermionic expansion and an angular analysis in momentum space, as was used in the recent proof by two of us of Salmhofer's criterion in two dimensions., Comment: 85 pages, 13 figures

6. A Rigorous Proof of Fermi Liquid Behavior for Jellium Two-Dimensional Interacting Fermions

Abstract

Using the method of continuous constructive renormalization group around the Fermi surface, it is proved that a jellium two-dimensional interacting system of Fermions at low temperature $T$ remains analytic in the coupling constant $\lambda$ for $|\lambda| |\log T| \le K $ where $K$ is some numerical constant and $T$ is the temperature. Furthermore in that range of parameters, the first and second derivatives of the self-energy remain bounded, a behavior which is that of Fermi liquids and in particular excludes Luttinger liquid behavior. Our results prove also that in dimension two any transition temperature must be non-perturbative in the coupling constant, a result expected on physical grounds. Abstract

This is a companion paper to cond-mat/9907130. Using the method of continuous renormalization group around the Fermi surface and the results of cond-mat/9907130, we achieve the proof that a two-dimensional jellium interacting system of Fermions at low temperature T is a Fermi liquid (analytic in the coupling constant g) for g < const./|log T| and satisfying uniform bounds on the first and second derivatives of the selfenergy. Abstract

Using the method of continuous renormalization group around the Fermi surface, we prove that a two-dimensional jellium interacting system of Fermions at low temperature T is a Fermi liquid (analytic in the coupling constant g) for g < const/|logT|, and satisfying uniform bounds on the first and second derivatives of the selfenergy. Abstract

BACKGROUND: Atrial fibrillation is the most common cardiac arrhythmia, and no current therapy is ideal for control of this condition. Experimental studies suggest that angiotensin II-receptor blockers (ARBs) can influence atrial remodeling, and some clinical studies suggest that they may prevent atrial fibrillation. METHODS: We conducted a large, randomized, prospective, placebo-controlled, multicenter trial to test whether the ARB valsartan could reduce the recurrence of atrial fibrillation. We enrolled patients who were in sinus rhythm but had had either two or more documented episodes of atrial fibrillation in the previous 6 months or successful cardioversion for atrial fibrillation in the previous 2 weeks. To be eligible, patients also had to have underlying cardiovascular disease, diabetes, or left atrial enlargement. Patients were randomly assigned to receive valsartan or placebo. The two primary end points were the time to a first recurrence of atrial fibrillation and the proportion of patients who had more than one recurrence of atrial fibrillation over the course of 1 year. RESULTS: A total of 1442 patients were enrolled in the study. Atrial fibrillation recurred in 371 of the 722 patients (51.4%) in the valsartan group, as compared with 375 of 720 (52.1%) in the placebo group (adjusted hazard ratio, 0.97; 96% confidence interval [CI], 0.83 to 1.14; P = 0.73). More than one episode of atrial fibrillation occurred in 194 of 722 patients (26.9%) in the valsartan group and in 201 of 720 (27.9%) in the placebo group (adjusted odds ratio, 0.89; 99% CI, 0.64 to 1.23; P = 0.34). The results were similar in all predefined subgroups of patients, including those who were not receiving angiotensin-converting-enzyme inhibitors. CONCLUSIONS: Treatment with valsartan was not associated with a reduction in the incidence of recurrent atrial fibrillation. (ClinicalTrials.gov number, NCT00376272.) Abstract

We assessed the influence of clinically significant mitral regurgitation (MR) on clinical-echocardiographic response and outcome in heart failure (HF) patients treated with a biventricular defibrillator (cardiac resynchronization therapy defibrillator [CRT-D]). METHODS AND RESULTS: A total of 659 HF patients underwent successful implantation of CRT-D and were enrolled in a multicenter prospective registry (median follow-up of 15 months). Following baseline echocardiographic evaluation, patients were stratified into two groups according to the severity of MR: 232 patients with more than mild MR (Group MR+: grade 2, 3, and 4 MR) versus 427 patients with mild (grade 1) or no functional MR (Group MR-). On 6- and 12-month echocardiographic evaluation, MR was seen to have improved in the vast majority of MR+ patients, while it remained unchanged in most MR- patients. On 12-month follow-up evaluation, a comparable response to CRT was observed in the two groups, in terms of the extent of left ventricular reverse remodeling and combined clinical and echocardiographic response. During long-term follow-up, event-free survival did not differ between MR+ and MR- patients, even when subpopulations of patients with ischemic heart disease and with dilated cardiomyopathy were analyzed separately. On multivariate analysis, the only independent predictor of death from any cause was the lack of β-blocker use. CONCLUSIONS: This observational analysis supports the use of CRT-D in HF patients with clinically significant MR; MR had no major influence on patient outcome.

Abstract

Aims To analyse the effectiveness of cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) in patients with valvular heart disease (a subset not specifically investigated in randomized controlled trials) in comparison with ischaemic heart disease or dilated cardiomyopathy patients. Methods and results Patients enrolled in a national registry were evaluated during a median follow-up of 16 months after CRT implant. Patients with valvular heart disease treated with CRT ( n = 108) in comparison with ischaemic heart disease ( n = 737) and dilated cardiomyopathy ( n = 635) patients presented: (i) a higher prevalence of chronic atrial fibrillation, with atrioventricular node ablation performed in around half of the cases; (ii) a similar clinical and echocardiographic profile at baseline; (iii) a similar improvement of LVEF and a similar reduction in ventricular volumes at 6–12 months; (iv) a favourable clinical response at 12 months with an improvement of the clinical composite score similar to that occurring in patients with dilated cardiomyopathy and more pronounced than that observed in patients with ischaemic heart disease; (v) a long-term outcome, in term of freedom from death or heart transplantation, similar to patients affected by ischaemic heart disease and basically more severe than that of patients affected by dilated cardiomyopathy. Conclusion In ‘real world’ clinical practice, CRT appears to be effective also in patients with valvular heart disease. However, in this group of patients the outcome after CRT does not precisely overlap any of the two other groups of patients, for which much more data are currently available.

Abstract

Background: Few data exist on the long-term changes and the prognostic value of heart rate variability (HRV) assessed by implanted devices in heart failure (HF) patients treated with resynchronization therapy (CRT). Aims: To analyze the long-term changes in the standard deviation of 5-minute median atrial–atrial sensed intervals (SDANN), and assess its role in predicting CRT efficacy and major cardiovascular events. Methods and results: We included 509 consecutive patients implanted with CRT devices. At 12-month follow-up, 44 patients had died and 86 patients had at least one HF hospitalisation.
