NATURAL disasters , *KOREAN national character , *DISASTER films , *DISASTERS in motion pictures , *MOTION pictures & culture - Abstract
The modern South Korean cultural imaginary has been marked by a curious lack of large-scale, naturally occurring, apocalyptic disaster narratives. This absence becomes significant when mapped against narratives of manmade disasters that are typically juxtaposed with depictions of solid and unchanging physical land, within which the hyangto (home soil) frequently emerges as a comforting signifier for the cultural continuity of the Korean nation in the face of social and political disasters. This article will discuss the significance of this representational insistence of safe land, and why the physical soil of the Korean peninsula itself takes such a central stage in narratives of national (but very rarely natural) disasters. To foreground a reading of the only Korean natural disaster blockbuster film to date, Haeundae (Tidal Wave, 2009), as an example of how disaster narratives have been integrated into wider political discourses of communal or even national identity, this article will highlight a clear resistance to the mere possibility of nature turning on human beings in the modern Korean cinematic imaginary. This approach, in turn, reveals a strong symbolic link between the grand narrative of the Korean people and culture as being inextricably entwined with the unchanging nature of the physical soil itself. POPULAR culture , *SOCIAL influence , *CLIMATE change research , *FATE & fatalism - Abstract
Using two large-scale surveys, I argue that the prevalence of apocalyptic popular culture influences apocalyptic beliefs in the United States. I focus especially on Hollywood disaster movies of the 1990s and 2000s, most of which deal with environmental themes, and participants in the 'peak oil' movement, a quasi-religious American apocalyptic social movement organized around a vision of energy depletion and social collapse. In these surveys, 'peakists' reflect on their relationship with fictional narratives of disaster and destruction. I contend that disaster films influenced major aspects of the 'peak oil' ideology, such as the hope for regeneration (or even a better world) as a result of environmental crisis and social collapse; the tendency towards fatalism; and the imagination of social and environmental change as immediate and explosive instead of gradual. This cultural influence is situated in the context of contemporary responses to other environmental issues, such as climate change. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article analyzes the eschatological model of ideas about the tragic prospects of human existence, as one which includes two large groups of research directions: religious and non-religious eschatology. It is stated that non-religious eschatology is considered to be the research area within which the role of global risks on a planetary scale is being explored on a basis of a scientific approach in analyzing the causes of a possible eschatological scenario for the development of earth history. In this case scientists pay attention to identifying the factors or objects that threaten to destroy mankind, and they also evaluate the likelihood of all-planetary disasters. Another direction of their search is to study the facts about global natural disasters that occurred earlier in the history of our planet. The author also notes that these scholars avoid the use of the concept of "eschatology" and its derivatives, using the concept of "global risks" instead. We suppose that such a predetermined desire of scientists, especially representatives of the natural sciences, to disassociate from generated throughout history by religious thought warnings (divination) about finiteness of not only human life, but also mankind overall because of supernatural factors. The author emphasizes the necessity of thorough analysis of the works of so-called non-religious eschatology representatives by contemporary religious scholars in order to compare and summarize the various scenarios of human development, including those developed within various theological doctrines and religious philosophy. To my mind, Global information field of the modern world leaves people with no chance to avoid realizing the global risks. Global threats of non-religious content that are considered potentially possible by scholars are highlighted in the article. It is stated that the global information space of the modern world does not leave a person with the opportunity to be unaware of the global risks eschatological by nature.,

Psychosexual dynamics in academic institutions are characterized using WR. Bion's description of the production of `minus K' and the turn to the individual, as a defence at times of boundary crisis. This theoretical account illuminates the importance of the relationship between container and contained, but needs to be contextualized. It is argued that Bion's ideas have been carried to the present day through cultural representations of disaster, and so have a particular resonance with contemporary academic boundary crises. The paper exemplifies a general argument about the importance of psychoanalysis as a culturally specific form of knowledge. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This research is mainly aimed at giving a contribute to the stabilization of the cinematographic instrument inside geography. It will particularly be focused on three possible ways to use movies within the geographical studies: movies as a representation of space, as imagination of places and, finally, as a conceptual example. The research will essentially be centered on the imagination of urban spaces in the catastrophic movies and particularly on the capability they might have to give urban spaces a new system of visibility. The corpus of the analysis is formed of sixty-two movies, mostly deriving from science fiction. From this perspective, the initial idea is to combine the temporal dimension, which is at the basis of science fiction (especially the ideas of the future) with the spatial dimension personified by urban spaces. The first relation between this imagination and the urban realities feeds on a “crisologic” interpretation: these movies help to stabilize a diegetic universe which is full of several pathologies that have been distressing the urban development for the last 50 years. Conversely, the last point will aim at widening the scope of the previous considerations. The imagination of catastrophes and their increasing success will be included in the contemporary Zeitraumgeist (“spirit of time and space”). I will particularly concentrate on a possible change inside our relation to space and time. In this context, the framework of reference will be the concept of modernity which is here considered, among the many meanings, as an essentially time-space experience. The conclusion will lead to develop the hypothesis of a “neo-modernity”, a neologism that is used to define the inner changes in our way to experiencing time (past, present, future) and the urban space.; Le but de ce travail est premièrement celui de contribuer à la stabilisation de l’outil cinématographique au sein des études géographiques.

This paper discusses the scientific rigor of disaster movies in those productions where natural hazards take on special importance. It is obvious that these films are a “science fiction” product and, as such, do not pretend to be absolutely plausible. However, we wish to discuss the “social responsibility” of the genre in the tretatment of scientific issues. Moreover, they constitute an extraordinary educational resource on Earth Sciences. We describe some proposals on the Internet and we suggest some ideas for teachers to organize their own educational activities
