Purpose: The study was conducted to examine the factors which affect the insomnia of nurses working in the intensive care unit of a university hospital, and to determinate insomnia severity. Methods: Although there are few studies evaluating nurses' insomnia, it is an important issue worldwide. The research was conducted with a cross-sectional and descriptive design with 149 nurses working in the Intensive Care Units of a university hospital. The data were collected with Data Collection Form and Insomnia Severity Index with face-to-face interview method. Descriptive methods and Chi-Square Test were used for statistical analyses, and p Results: It was determined that the mean age of the participants was 31.04±5.93, 54.4% worked at surgical Intensive Care Units, many of them had a weekly working duration of 40-48 hours, and 62.4% worked in shifts. It was also determined that 75.2% of the nurses experienced insomnia. The difference between gender, weekly working duration, working style, sleep onset latency, sleeping duration and insomnia severity status was found to be statistically significant (p0.05). Conclusions: It can be argued that the majority of nurses who participated in the study experienced insomnia and moderate insomnia, and this result may pose a threat for nursing care in Intensive Care Units.

Hemşirelerin bakım verdiği bireylere ulaşmasını sağlayan en temel araç iletişim bilgi ve becerisidir. Bu beceri, yoğun bakım ünitesi gibi kritik ortamlarda daha önemli olmaktadır. Bu araştırma yoğun bakım hemşirelerinin iletişim becerilerini değerlendirmek amacıyla tanımlayıcı tipte yapılmıştır. Çalışma, Güneydoğu Anadolu bölgesinde bulunan dört hastanenin yoğun bakım ünitelerinden görev yapan 260 hemşire ile Ocak-Mart 2018 tarihlerinde gerçekleştirilmiştir. Verilerin toplanmasında, Hemşire Tanıtıcı Bilgi Formu ve İletişim Becerileri Değerlendirme Ölçeği (İBDÖ) kullanılmıştır. Katılımcıların %68.1’inin lisans ve üzeri eğitime sahip olduğu ve %56.2’sinin son bir yıl içinde iletişim becerilerine yönelik eğitim aldığı belirlenmiştir. Lisans ve üzeri düzeyde eğitime sahip hemşirelerin lise mezunu hemşirelere göre iletişim becerileri daha iyi bulunmuştur. Son bir yıl içerisinde iletişime yönelik eğitim alan hemşirelerin iletişim becerilerinin, almayanlara göre daha yüksek seviyede olduğu saptanmıştır. Çalışmadan elde edilen sonuçlar doğrultusunda; hemşirelerin iletişim becerilerini geliştirmeye yönelik hizmet içi eğitim programlarının düzenlenmesi ve sürekliliğinin sağlanması, iletişim becerilerinin belirli aralıklarla değerlendirilmesi, yoğun bakım ünitelerinde yaşanan iletişim güçlüklerinin belirlenmesi ve buna yönelik önlemlerin alınması önerilmektedir., The most basic tool enabling nurses to reach the individuals they care for is the skill and knowledge of communication. This skill becomes more important in critical settings such as intensive care units. The present study was conducted in a descriptive design to evaluate the communication skills of intensive care nurses. The study was conducted between January-March 2018 with 260 nurses who worked at the intensive care units of four hospitals in the Southeastern Anatolia Region. The Nurse Descriptive Characteristics Form and The Communication Skills Evaluation Scale were used to collect the study data. It was found that 68.1% of the participants had undergraduate or higher educational status, and 56.2% received training on communication skills in the last year. The communication skills of the nurses who had undergraduate and higher educational status were better than those with high school degrees. It was also found that the communication skills of the nurses who received communication training in the last year were higher than those who did not. In line with the results obtained in the present study, it is recommended to organize and sustain in-service training programs to improve communication skills of nurses, to evaluate communication skills at regular intervals, to identify communication difficulties in intensive care units, and to take measures regarding this aspect.

Aim This study aimed to synthesize the findings of studies evaluating educational programs providing curricular transcultural nursing education. Backgrounds Nursing care education about cultural diversity and experience with taking care of patients from different cultures and special populations are significant factors that could likely influence cultural competence. The effect of transcultural nursing education given to nursing students has been investigated by different researchers and different methods. Addressing the effects of transcultural nursing education on nursing students’ cultural awareness, knowledge and attitudes can contribute to future transcultural nursing education activities and the creation of training content. Design This study was a methodological systematic review study. Methods Methodological quality was assessed following the PRISMA guidelines. PubMed, Science Direct, APA PsycArticles, OVID, EBSCO, and Web of Science databases were searched from 2010 to 2020. The following keywords were used: “Transcultural nursing”, “education”, “curriculum”, “course”, “effectiveness”, “cultural competence”, “knowledge”, “skills”, “attitudes”, and “nursing students”. Studies published in peer-reviewed journals in English using both experimental and quasi-experimental designs were included. Results Total of 11 research papers, (n = 1375) nursing students’ outputs were included in this review. Cultural competence interventions/programs were provided as part of the core theoretical courses or as elective courses. Different durations and types of teaching methods included debates, discussions, case scenarios, practicums, simulation, international learning projects, experiential learning, storytelling, and traditional teaching lectures. In ten studies, an increase in the level of culture-related competences was reported as statistically significant (p Conclusions Limited studies have generally proven the effectiveness of transcultural nursing education provided to nursing students. Education content, training methods and training periods were not standard in the literature. More comprehensive, valid and reliable measurement tools are needed to evaluate the education provided for nursing students.

Hastanelerde sağlık işgücü içinde sayısal olarak büyük çoğunluğu oluşturan ve hizmet sunumunun sürekliliği açısından önemli bir grup olan hemşireler kas iskelet sistemi rahatsızlıkları açısından riskli gruptadır. Bu çalışma hemşirelerin gün içinde defalarca yaptığı tekrarlı hareket olan kan basıncı ölçümü işlemi sırasındaki ergonomik risk analizine yönelik verilen eğitimin etkinliğini değerlendirmek amacıyla Eylül 2019- Mayıs 2020 tarihleri arasında 64 hemşireyle Gaziantep Üniversitesi Şahinbey Araştırma ve Uygulama Hastanesi'nde yürütülmüş, deney grubunun kontrol grubu ile aynı olduğu ön test/ son test yarı deneysel planlanmış bir araştırmadır. Çalışmada Hemşire Tanıtıcı Özellikler Formu, Hızlı Tüm Vücut Değerlendirmesi Formu (REBA), Genişletilmiş Nordic Kas-İskelet Sistemi Ağrı Sorgusu kullanılmıştır. Veriler SPSS programının 21.0 sürümü (IBM SPSS Inc Canada) kullanılarak yapılmıştır. Çalışmaya katılan hemşirelerin %82.4' ü kadın, %84.4'ü lisans mezunu olup yaş ortalamaları 35.79±5.04'tür. Hemşirelerin %64.1' inin fiziksel egzersiz yapmadığı ve tüm anatomik bölgelerinde farklı oranlarda ağrıları olduğu; fakat en sık bel ağrısı (%71.9) yaşadıkları saptanmıştır. Hemşirelere verilen eğitim öncesi REBA puan ortalamalarının 5.79±1.08 olduğu, eğitimden sonraki (1. ve 3. ay) gözlemlerinde bu ortalamanın düştüğü, eğitimin etkin olduğu bulunmuştur. REBA puan ortalamaları ile eğitim durumu arasında anlamlı bir ilişki bulunmuş, lisansüstü eğitim mezunlarının daha yüksek REBA puanı aldıkları görülmüştür (p=0.049). Hemşirelere verilecek eğitimler ile; uygun olmayan postürde çalıştıklarında, yaptıkları işe bağlı olarak kas iskelet sistemi rahatsızlıkları yaşayabilecekleri farkındalığı oluşturulmalı ve kas iskelet sistemini destekleyecek egzersiz programlarına yönlendirilmelidirler.

Diabetes is a major public health problem that has a negative impact on the quality of life and leads to serious complications. The study was carried out to investigate the errors in self-administering insulin and the factors affecting it. The descriptive study was conducted on 110 diabetic patients who received treatment in all internal clinics of a public hospital between September and December 2016. Data were collected by using the Personal Information Form and Insulin Application Observation Form. Of the participants, 72.7% were females, and 42.7 % were illiterate; 56.4% were obese; 52.7 % had lipohypertrophy at the injection site, and 65.5 % had bleeding or bruising. It was detected that 69.9% of the individuals received insulin administration training by the Diabetes specialist nurses; 24.5% received the training in the last year, and 70.9% of the injection sites were not controlled by physicians or nurses at all. It was determined that the metabolic parameters of the illiterate diabetics were higher compared to the others (p=.016). It was found that patients made errors at varying rates during all stages of insulin administration. Comprehensive and regular training on diabetes and insulin administration and regular follow-up of individuals by physicians and nurses will increase the awareness of patients about diabetes, complications of diabetes, and insulin treatment, and reduce the rate of administration errors., Diyabet sık görülen, yaşam kalitesini olumsuz yönde etkileyen, ciddi komplikasyonlara yol açan, önemli bir halk sağlığı problemidir. This descriptive study was conducted to examine the malpractices of diabetic individuals who self-injected insulin as well as the associated factors. The study was conducted with 110 patients with diabetes who were hospitalized in all internal medicine clinics at Gaziantep 25 December Public Hospital between 9 September and 30 December 2016 and were undergoing treatment in the dialysis unit. In the study, the data were collected by using a questionnaire and an insulin injection observation form. The data were evaluated by using the SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Sciences) packaged software and analyzed by using number, percentage, mean, t test, One- Way ANOVA, correlation analysis, and chi-square test. 72.7% of individuals who participated in the study were female; 86.4% were married and 42.7% were illiterate. 56.4% of the individuals were overweight (obese). 98.2% of the patients were self-injecting for more than one year; 40.9% self-injected insulin twice a day; 80% had no idea about the length of pen needles and 49.1% applied injection mostly in the abdominal area. 52.7% of the patients had lump/swelling (lipohypertrophy) and 65.5% had bleeding/bruising in the injection area. It was determined that 69.9% of individuals were trained on insulin by a diabetes training nurse; 24.5% were trained within the last one year, and 70.9% had not had their injection sites checked by physicians or nurses. Illiterate patients with diabetes had higher metabolic parameters than others (p=0.016). It was found that patients made malpractices at different rates in all stages of insulin application. A comprehensive and regular training on all aspects of diabetes and the use of insulin, as well as regular follow-up of individuals by physicians and nurses will increase the awareness of patients regarding diabetes, diabetes complications and insulin treatment and decrease the rate of malpractices. 71

Aim: This methodological study was conducted to determine the validity and reliability of the Turkish version of the Eye Care Clinical Competence Questionnaire, which evaluates the clinical competence of nurses regarding eye care in intensive care patients. Design: A methodological study. Methods: The study included 175 nurses working in the ICUs of the hospitals where the study was conducted. Results: Following factor analysis, based on the tetrachoric correlation matrix for the information sub-dimension, eight items were excluded from the questionnaire. As a result of the confirmatory factor analysis conducted for the questionnaire, the error variance value of item 26 was removed from the questionnaire. The final questionnaire adapted for the Turkish cultural context consisted of 26 items. Cronbach’s alpha value for the attitude sub-dimension was 0.87; the Cronbach alpha value for the application sub-dimension was 0.85, and the Cronbach alpha value for the questionnaire as a whole was 0.84. Conclusion: It was found that the Turkish version of the Eye Care Clinical Competence Questionnaire was a valid and reliable measurement tool. This measurement tool can be used in studies to evaluate the clinical competence of intensive care nurses regarding eye care. © 2021 Central European Journal of Nursing and Midwifery.

Background: Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) has raised the global public health concern and has been declared a pan- demic by the World Health Organization. Objectives: This study was aimed to examine the clinical course and outcomes of the patients with COVID-19 in the south- eastern part of Turkey. Methods: This retrospective study was conducted on the files of 173 patients who were diagnosed with COVID-19. The “COVID-19 Case Information Form” in the patients’ medical records was used. Results: Of the patients with COVID-19, 64.2% were male and 16.2% had a chronic disease. Their mean age was 34.76±25.75 years. Cough and fatigue were the most common clinical symptoms at admission with 38.7%. Aim: This study was carried out with the aim of evaluating the attitudes of nurses to workplace incivility. Design: A cross-sectional study. Methods: This study was implemented with the participation of 195 nurses working in a hospital in southeastern Turkey. The Nurse Information Form and Nursing Incivility Scale were used as data collection tools. Results: When the total scores for the scale were compared in terms of the working hours of the participants, it was found that those working only night shifts had higher scores than those working only during daytime hours (p = 0.036). A total of 43.6% of the participants thought that their colleagues’ attitudes towards them were uncivil. When this situation was evaluated in terms of total scale scores, it was found that participants who felt that they were being treated uncivilly had higher scores (p = 0.030). Conclusion: Nurses were exposed to incivility in the work environment due to stressors such as insufficient number of nurses on wards and the pattern of shifts.
