Although the study of X-ray binaries has led to major breakthroughs in high-energy astrophysics, their circumbinary environment at scales of ∼100–10,000 au has not been thoroughly investigated. In this paper, we undertake a novel and exploratory study by employing direct and high-contrast imaging techniques on a sample of X-ray binaries, using adaptive optics and the vortex coronagraph on Keck/NIRC2. High-contrast imaging opens up the possibility to search for exoplanets, brown dwarfs, circumbinary companion stars, and protoplanetary disks in these extreme systems. Here we present the first near-infrared high-contrast images of 13 high-mass X-ray binaries located within ∼2–3 kpc. The key results of this campaign involve the discovery of several candidate circumbinary companions ranging from substellar (brown dwarf) to stellar masses. By conducting an analysis based on Galactic population models, we discriminate sources that are likely background/foreground stars and isolate those that have a high probability (≳60%–99%) of being gravitationally bound to the X-ray binary. This paper seeks to establish a preliminary catalog for future analyses of proper motion and subsequent observations. With our preliminary results, we calculate the first estimate of the companion frequency and the multiplicity frequency for X-ray binaries: ≈0.6 and 1.8 ± 0.9, respectively, considering only the sources that are most likely bound to the X-ray binary. In addition to extending our comprehension of how brown dwarfs and stars can form and survive in such extreme systems, our study opens a new window to our understanding of the formation of X-ray binaries. Photonic lanterns (PLs) are tapered waveguides that gradually transition from a multimode fiber geometry to a bundle of single-mode fibers (SMFs). They can efficiently couple multimode telescope light into a multimode fiber entrance at the focal plane and convert it into multiple single-mode beams. Thus, each SMF samples its unique mode (lantern principal mode) of the telescope light in the pupil, analogous to subapertures in aperture masking interferometry (AMI). Coherent imaging with PLs can be enabled by the interference of SMF outputs and applying phase modulation, which can be achieved using a photonic chip beam combiner at the backend (e.g., the ABCD beam combiner). In this study, we investigate the potential of coherent imaging by the interference of SMF outputs of a PL with a single telescope. We demonstrate that the visibilities that can be measured from a PL are mutual intensities incident on the pupil weighted by the cross correlation of a pair of lantern modes. From numerically simulated lantern principal modes of a 6-port PL, we find that interferometric observables using a PL behave similarly to separated-aperture visibilities for simple models on small angular scales (< λ / D) but with greater sensitivity to symmetries and capability to break phase angle degeneracies. Furthermore, we present simulated observations with wave front errors (WFEs) and compare them to AMI. Despite the redundancy caused by extended lantern principal modes, spatial filtering offers stability to WFEs. Our simulated observations suggest that PLs may offer significant benefits in the photon-noise-limited regime and in resolving small angular scales at the low-contrast regime. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article presents a novel approach to actively compensate wavefront errors in both phase and amplitude using a Liquid Crystal Spatial Light Modulator (LC-SLM) for direct exoplanet imaging. This method involves controlling the wavefront to address challenges posed by stellar coronagraphy. Experimental results demonstrate successful wavefront error compensation in both phase and amplitude components. Exoplanet science is one of the most thriving fields of modern astrophysics. A major goal is the atmospheric characterization of dozens of small, terrestrial exoplanets in order to search for signatures in their atmospheres that indicate biological activity, assess their ability to provide conditions for life as we know it, and investigate their expected atmospheric diversity. None of the currently adopted projects or missions, from ground or in space, can address these goals. In this White Paper, submitted to ESA in response to the Voyage 2050 Call, we argue that a large space-based mission designed to detect and investigate thermal emission spectra of terrestrial exoplanets in the mid-infrared wavelength range provides unique scientific potential to address these goals and surpasses the capabilities of other approaches. While NASA might be focusing on large missions that aim to detect terrestrial planets in reflected light, ESA has the opportunity to take leadership and spearhead the development of a large mid-infrared exoplanet mission within the scope of the "Voyage 2050" long-term plan establishing Europe at the forefront of exoplanet science for decades to come. Given the ambitious science goals of such a mission, additional international partners might be interested in participating and contributing to a roadmap that, in the long run, leads to a successful implementation. A new, dedicated development program funded by ESA to help reduce development and implementation cost and further push some of the required key technologies would be a first important step in this direction. Ultimately, a large mid-infrared exoplanet imaging mission will be needed to help answer one of humankind's most fundamental questions: "How unique is our Earth?"

Primarily through indirect observational techniques, the existence of thousands of exoplanetary systems has been confirmed. However, we still do not have an image of an exoplanetary system in reflected visible light. This is important because planetary systems as old as the solar system (∼ 5 G yr) have cooled to near equilibrium and are thus no longer as bright as the systems being detected by current infrared coronagraphs. Furthermore, the visible bandpass contains valuable information about aerosols, hazes, and clouds that are unavailable to infrared investigations. Our research group has transitioned key technologies that are necessary for direct imaging of exoplanets and their environments from laboratory to near space using suborbital platforms. Two of our sounding rocket experiments, called Planetary Imaging Concept Testbed Using a Rocket Experiment (PICTURE) and Planet Imaging Coronagraphic Technology Using a Reconfigurable Experimental Base (PICTURE-B), matured a 0.5 m diameter Gregorian telescope, a (600 nm to 750 nm) visible nulling coronagraph (VNC), a 1024 channel deformable mirror (DM) and a fine pointing system. Following up on these rocket experiments, in 2019 we flew a high-altitude balloon called Planetary Imaging Concept Testbed Using a Recoverable Experiment - Coronagraph (PICTURE-C). It carried a telescope employing a 0.6 m diameter Off Axis Parabolic (OAP) primary mirror, a vector vortex coronagraph (VVC), a 97-channel low order and a 1024 element high order DM operating in the 540 nm to 660 nm wavelength range. Like the rocket experiments, the first balloon flight demonstrated a 5 milliarcseconds (mas) fine pointing capability and the space worthiness of the coronagraph. The latest flight of PICTURE-C occurred on September 28 2022. It was designed to obtain the first high contrast (∼ 1 0 − 6 ) image of a debris disk, a circumstellar ring produced by the sublimation of cometary material and collisions among asteroids, comets and Kuiper-belt analogs, in reflected visible light. The experiment achieved 1 mas root mean square (RMS) fine pointing stability. Even though unanticipated transient vibrations prevented PICTURE-C from attaining its science goals, the conronagraph demonstrated 4 × 1 0 − 6 contrast over 540 nm to 660 nm (20% bandwidth). • Visible light direct imaging payload is flight-proven aboard two sounding rockets and two high-altitude balloons. • First in-flight demonstration of a high contrast region (dark hole) around a star enhanced with a deformable mirror. • Image stabilization to 1 milli-arcsec level achieved. One of the main objectives of cosmology is the measurement of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) polarization and, in particular, the so-called B-modes, which could demonstrate the existence of the primordial gravitational waves generated at the early stages of the Universe. For this reason, a new integrated version of the heterodyne polarimeter photonic part shown on a previously proposed scheme that can be used in both direct imaging and interferometric instruments is presented. We have tested its properties using specific commercial software, obtaining promising results. Working as a direct imaging instrument, it is shown that the proposed polarimeter can provide sufficiently low polarization angle and polarization efficiency systematic errors, which are considered acceptable for current ground-based CMB polarization experiments dedicated to the characterization of the foreground signals affecting the lowest part of the frequency spectrum. Survey strategies for upcoming exoplanet direct imaging missions have considered varying assumptions of prior knowledge. Precursor radial velocity surveys could have detected nearby exo-Earths and provided prior orbit and mass constraints. Alternatively, a direct imaging mission performing astrometry could yield constraints on the orbit and phase angle of target planets. Understanding the impact of prior mass and orbit information on planetary characterization is crucial for efficiently recognizing habitable exoplanets. To address this question, we use a reflected-light retrieval tool to infer the atmospheric and bulk properties of directly imaged Earth-analogs while considering varying levels of prior information and signal-to-noise ratio (S/N). Because of the strong correlation between the orbit-related parameters and the planetary radius, prior information on the orbital distance and planetary phase angle yield much tighter constraints on the planetary radius: from ${R}_{{\rm{p}}}={2.95}_{-1.95}^{+2.69}\,{R}_{\oplus }$ without prior knowledge, to ${R}_{{\rm{p}}}={1.01}_{-0.19}^{+0.33}\,{R}_{\oplus }$ with prior determination of the orbit for S/N = 20 in the visible/near-infrared spectral range, thus allowing size determination from reflected light observations. However, additional knowledge of planet mass does not notably enhance radius ( ${R}_{{\rm{p}}}={0.98}_{-0.14}^{+0.17}\,{R}_{\oplus }$ ) or atmospheric characterization. Also, prior knowledge of the mass alone does not yield a tight radius constraint ( ${R}_{{\rm{p}}}={1.64}_{-0.80}^{+1.29}\,{R}_{\oplus }$ ) nor improves atmospheric composition inference. By contrast, because of its sensitivity to gas column abundance, detecting a Rayleigh scattering slope or bounding Rayleigh opacity helps to refine gas mixing ratio inferences without requiring prior mass knowledge. Overall, apart from radius determination, increasing the S/N is more beneficial than additional prior observations.

Observations of debris disks offer important insights into the formation and evolution of planetary systems. Though M dwarfs make up approximately 80% of nearby stars, very few M dwarf debris disks have been studied in detail—making it unclear how or if the information gleaned from studying debris disks around more massive stars extends to the more abundant M dwarf systems. We report the first scattered-light detection of the debris disk around the M4 star Fomalhaut C using JWST's Near Infrared Camera (NIRCam; 3.6 and 4.4 μ m). This result adds to the prior sample of only four M dwarf debris disks with detections in scattered light and marks the latest spectral type and oldest star among them. The size and orientation of the disk in these data are generally consistent with the prior Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array submillimeter detection. Though no companions are identified, these data provide strong constraints on their presence—with sensitivity sufficient to recover sub-Saturn mass objects in the vicinity of the disk. This result illustrates the unique capability of JWST to uncover elusive M dwarf debris disks in scattered light and lays the groundwork for deeper studies of such objects in the 2–5 μ m regime.

The unprecedented medium-resolution ( R _λ ∼ 1500–3500) near- and mid-infrared (1–18 μ m) spectrum provided by JWST for the young (140 ± 20 Myr) low-mass (12–20 M _Jup ) L–T transition (L7) companion VHS 1256 b gives access to a catalog of molecular absorptions. In this study, we present a comprehensive analysis of this data set utilizing a forward-modeling approach applying our Bayesian framework, ForMoSA . We explore five distinct atmospheric models to assess their performance in estimating key atmospheric parameters: T _eff , log( g ), [M/H], C/O, γ , f _sed , and R . Our findings reveal that each parameter’s estimate is significantly influenced by factors such as the wavelength range considered and the model chosen for the fit. This is attributed to systematic errors in the models and their challenges in accurately replicating the complex atmospheric structure of VHS 1256 b, notably the complexity of its clouds and dust distribution. To propagate the impact of these systematic uncertainties on our atmospheric property estimates, we introduce innovative fitting methodologies based on independent fits performed on different spectral windows. We finally derived a T _eff consistent with the spectral type of the target, considering its young age, which is confirmed by our estimate of log( g ). Despite the exceptional data quality, attaining robust estimates for chemical abundances [M/H] and C/O, often employed as indicators of formation history, remains challenging. Nevertheless, the pioneering case of JWST’s data for VHS 1256 b has paved the way for future acquisitions of substellar spectra that will be systematically analyzed to directly compare the properties of these objects and correct the systematics in the models.

We present a performance analysis for the aperture masking interferometry (AMI) mode on board the James Webb Space Telescope Near Infrared Imager and Slitless Spectrograph (JWST/NIRISS). Thanks to self-calibrating observables, AMI accesses inner working angles down to and even within the classical diffraction limit. The scientific potential of this mode has recently been demonstrated by the Early Release Science (ERS) 1386 program with a deep search for close-in companions in the HIP 65426 exoplanetary system. As part of ERS 1386, we use the same data set to explore the random, static, and calibration errors of NIRISS AMI observables. We compare the observed noise properties and achievable contrast to theoretical predictions. We explore possible sources of calibration errors and show that differences in charge migration between the observations of HIP 65426 and point-spread function calibration stars can account for the achieved contrast curves. Lastly, we use self-calibration tests to demonstrate that with adequate calibration NIRISS F380M AMI can reach contrast levels of ∼9–10 mag at ≳ λ / D . These tests lead us to observation planning recommendations and strongly motivate future studies aimed at producing sophisticated calibration strategies taking these systematic effects into account. This will unlock the unprecedented capabilities of JWST/NIRISS AMI, with sensitivity to significantly colder, lower-mass exoplanets than lower-contrast ground-based AMI setups, at orbital separations inaccessible to JWST coronagraphy.

Up to now and probably for still a long time, the only support of information used to detect exoplanets has been the analysis of light, either visible or infrared. In the vast majority of cases it is the light from a star and not the light from the planet itself which is used, because the huge contrast in brightness between the star and a planet orbiting it as well as the extremely short angular distance between them makes direct imaging a real challenge. It is then a subtle effect detected on the starlight that in general indicates the planet’s presence and provides information on some of its characteristics: mass, radius, distance to the star, temperature, etc. As an introduction to the different contributions appearing in this volume, this article proposes a kind of brief review of the various methods imagined by astronomers to exploit one of the properties of the light to succeed in detecting and characterizing exoplanets. We’ll show that even direct detection became a reality and contributes to the more than 5000 exoplanets detected today.

Understanding how giant and terrestrial planets form and evolve, what is their internal structure and that of their atmosphere, represents one of the major challenges of modern astronomy, which is directly connected to the ultimate search for life at the horizon 2030–2050. However, several astrophysical (understanding of the formation and physics of giant and terrestrial exoplanets), biological (identification of the best biomarkers) and technological (technical innovations for the new generations of telescopes and instruments) obstacles must be overcome. From the astrophysical point of view, it is indeed crucial to understand the mechanisms of formation and evolution of giant planets, including planet and disk interactions, which will completely sculpt the planetary architectures and thus dominate the formation of terrestrial planets, especially in regions around the host star capable of supporting life. It is also important to develop dedicated instrumentation and techniques to study in their totality the population of giant and terrestrial planets, but also to reveal in the near future the first biological markers of life in the atmospheres of terrestrial planets. In that perspective, direct imaging from ground-based observatories or in space is playing a central role in concert with other observing techniques. In this paper, I will briefly review the genesis of this observing technique, the main instrumental innovation and challenges, stellar targets and surveys, to then present the main results obtained so far about the physics and the mechanisms of formation and evolution of young giant planets and planetary system architectures. I will then present the exciting perspectives offered by the upcoming generation of planet imagers about to come online, particularly on the future extremely large telescopes. On the timescale of a human Life, we may well be witnessing the first discovery of an exoplanet and the first detection of indices of life in the atmosphere of a nearby exo-Earth!

Extremely large telescopes (ELTs) present an unparalleled opportunity to study the magnetism, atmospheric dynamics, and chemistry of very-low-mass (VLM) stars, brown dwarfs, and exoplanets. Instruments such as the Giant Magellan Telescope–Consortium Large Earth Finder (GMT/GCLEF), the Thirty Meter Telescope's Multi-Objective Diffraction-limited High-Resolution Infrared Spectrograph (TMT/MODHIS), and the European Southern Observatory's Mid-Infrared ELT Imager and Spectrograph (ELT/METIS) provide the spectral resolution and signal-to-noise ratio necessary to Doppler image ultracool targets' surfaces based on temporal spectral variations due to surface inhomogeneities. Using our publicly available code, Imber, developed and validated in Plummer & Wang, we evaluate these instruments' abilities to discern magnetic starspots and cloud systems on a VLM star (TRAPPIST-1), two L/T transition ultracool dwarfs (VHS J1256−1257 b and SIMP J0136+0933), and three exoplanets (Beta Pic b and HR 8799 d and e). We find that TMT/MODHIS and ELT/METIS are suitable for Doppler imaging the ultracool dwarfs and Beta Pic b over a single rotation. Uncertainties for longitude and radius are typically ≲10°, and latitude uncertainties range from ∼10° to 30°. TRAPPIST-1's edge-on inclination and low υ sin i provide a challenge for all three instruments, while GMT/GCLEF and the HR 8799 planets may require observations over multiple rotations. We compare the spectroscopic technique, photometry-only inference, and the combination of the two. We find combining spectroscopic and photometric observations can lead to improved Bayesian inference of surface inhomogeneities and offers insight into whether ultracool atmospheres are dominated by spotted or banded features. Despite the severe bias of the transit method of exoplanet discovery toward short orbital periods, a modest sample of transiting exoplanets with orbital periods greater than 100 days is known. Long-term radial velocity (RV) surveys are pivotal to confirming these signals and generating a set of planetary masses and densities for planets receiving moderate to low irradiation from their host stars. Here we conduct RV observations of Kepler-1514 from the Keck I telescope using the High Resolution Echelle Spectrometer. From these data, we measure the mass of the statistically validated giant (1.108 ± 0.023 RJ) exoplanet Kepler-1514 b with a 218-day orbital period as 5.28 ± 0.22MJ. The bulk density of this cool (~390 K) giant planet is -4.82+0.26-0.25g cm-3, consistent with a core supported by electron degeneracy pressure. We also infer an orbital eccentricity of 0.401+0.013-0.014 from the RV and transit observations, which is consistent with planet-planet scattering and disk cavity migration models. The Kepler-1514 system contains an Earth-size, Kepler Object of Interest on a 10.5-day orbit that we statistically validate against false-positive scenarios, including those involving a neighboring star. The combination of the brightness (V = 11.8) of the host star and the long period, low irradiation, and high density of Kepler-1514 b places this system among a rare group of known exoplanetary systems and as one that is amenable to continued study.

The JWST NIRSpec integral field unit (IFU) presents a unique opportunity to observe directly imaged exoplanets from 3 to 5 μ m at moderate spectral resolution ( R ∼ 2700) and thereby better constrain the composition, disequilibrium chemistry, and cloud properties of their atmospheres. In this work, we present the first NIRSpec IFU high-contrast observations of a substellar companion that requires starlight suppression techniques. We develop specific data-reduction strategies to study faint companions around bright stars and assess the performance of NIRSpec at high contrast. First, we demonstrate an approach to forward model the companion signal and the starlight directly in the detector images, which mitigates the effects of NIRSpec’s spatial undersampling. We demonstrate a sensitivity to planets that are 3 × 10 ^−6 fainter than their stars at 1″, or 3 × 10 ^−5 at 0.″3. Then, we implement a reference star point-spread function subtraction and a spectral extraction that does not require spatially and spectrally regularly sampled spectral cubes. This allows us to extract a moderate resolution ( R ∼ 2,700) spectrum of the faint T dwarf companion HD 19467 B from 2.9 to 5.2 μ m with a signal-to-noise ratio of ∼10 per resolution element. Across this wavelength range, HD 19467 B has a flux ratio varying between 10 ^−5 and 10 ^−4 and a separation relative to its star of 1.″6. A companion paper by Hoch et al. more deeply analyzes the atmospheric properties of this companion based on the extracted spectrum. Using the methods developed here, NIRSpec’s sensitivity may enable direct detection and spectral characterization of relatively old (∼1 Gyr), cool (∼250 K), and closely separated (∼3–5 au) exoplanets that are less massive than Jupiter.

The highest priority recommendation of the Astro2020 Decadal Survey for space-based astronomy was the construction of an observatory capable of characterizing habitable worlds. In this paper series we explore the detectability of and interference from exomoons and exorings serendipitously observed with the proposed Habitable Worlds Observatory (HWO) as it seeks to characterize exoplanets, starting in this manuscript with Earth–Moon analog mutual events. Unlike transits, which only occur in systems viewed near edge-on, shadow (i.e., solar eclipse) and lunar eclipse mutual events occur in almost every star–planet–moon system. The cadence of these events can vary widely from ∼yearly to multiple events per day, as was the case in our younger Earth–Moon system. Leveraging previous space-based (EPOXI) light curves of a Moon transit and performance predictions from the LUVOIR-B concept, we derive the detectability of Moon analogs with HWO. We determine that Earth–Moon analogs are detectable with observation of ∼2–20 mutual events for systems within 10 pc, and larger moons should remain detectable out to 20 pc. We explore the extent to which exomoon mutual events can mimic planet features and weather. We find that HWO wavelength coverage in the near-infrared, specifically in the 1.4 μ m water band where large moons can outshine their host planet, will aid in differentiating exomoon signals from exoplanet variability. Finally, we predict that exomoons formed through collision processes akin to our Moon are more likely to be detected in younger systems, where shorter orbital periods and favorable geometry enhance the probability and frequency of mutual events.

In almost any study involving optical/near-infrared photometry, understanding the completeness of detection and recovery is an essential part of the work. The recovery fraction is, in general, a function of several variables including magnitude, color, background sky noise, and crowding. We explore how completeness can be modeled, with the use of artificial-star tests, in a way that includes all of these parameters simultaneously within a neural network (NN) framework. The method is able to manage common issues including asymmetric completeness functions and the bilinear dependence of the detection limit on color index. We test the method with two sample Hubble Space Telescope data sets: the first involves photometry of the star cluster population around the giant Perseus galaxy NGC 1275, and the second involves the halo-star population in the nearby elliptical galaxy NGC 3377. The NN-based method achieves a classification accuracy of > 94% and produces results entirely consistent with more traditional techniques for determining completeness. Additional advantages of the method are that none of the issues arising from the binning of the data are present and that a recovery probability can be assigned to every individual star in real photometry. We present a new method for fitting exoplanet orbits to direct astrometric measurements, using nonlinear batch estimation and nonsingular orbital elements. Our estimation technique is based on the unscented transform, which approximates probability distributions using finite, deterministic sets of weighted sample points. Furthermore, we use Gaussian mixtures to account for the strong nonlinearities in the measurement model. As a fitting basis, we use a set of orbital elements developed specifically for directly observed exoplanets, combining features of the Thiele–Innes constants and the Cohen–Hubbard nonsingular elements. We validate the new method using simulated exoplanet orbits, and we demonstrate its use with real exoplanet data. Compared to state-of-the-art Markov Chain Monte Carlo and Bayesian rejection sampling techniques, the new method is found to give orbit estimates of comparable or higher accuracy but with much faster execution.

We present a multiwavelength (1.16–2.37 μ m) view of the debris disk around BD+45 ^° 598, using the Subaru Coronagraphic Extreme Adaptive Optics system paired with the Coronagraphic High Angular Resolution Imaging Spectrograph. With an assumed age of 23 Myr, this source allows us to study the early evolution of debris disks and search for forming planets. We fit a scattered light model to our disk using a differential evolution algorithm, and constrain its geometry. We find the disk to have a peak density radius of R _0 = 109.6 au, an inclination of i = 88.1°, and position angle PA = 111.0°. While we do not detect a substellar companion in the disk, our calculated contrast limits indicate sensitivity to planets as small as ∼10 M _Jup at a projected separation of 12 au of the star, and as small as ∼4 M _Jup beyond 38 au. When measuring intensity as a function of wavelength, the disk color constrains the minimum dust grain size within a range of ∼0.13–1.01 μ m.

The 1RXS J034231.8+121622 system consists of an M dwarf primary and a directly imaged low-mass stellar companion. We use high-resolution spectroscopic data from Keck/KPIC to estimate the objects' atmospheric parameters and radial velocities (RVs). Using PHOENIX stellar models, we find that the primary has a temperature of 3460 ± 50 K and a metallicity of 0.16 ± 0.04, while the secondary has a temperature of 2510 ± 50 K and a metallicity of ${0.13}_{-0.11}^{+0.12}$ . Recent work suggests this system is associated with the Hyades, giving it an older age than previous estimates. Both metallicities agree with current Hyades [Fe/H] measurements (0.11–0.21). Using stellar evolutionary models, we obtain significantly higher masses for the objects, 0.30 ± 0.15 M _⊙ and 0.08 ± 0.01 M _⊙ (84 ± 11 M _Jup ), respectively. Using the RVs and a new astrometry point from Keck/NIRC2, we find that the system is likely an edge-on, moderately eccentric ( ${0.41}_{-0.08}^{+0.27}$ ) configuration. We also estimate the C/O ratio of both objects using custom grid models, obtaining 0.42 ± 0.10 (primary) and 0.55 ± 0.10 (companion). From these results, we confirm that this system most likely went through a binary star formation process in the Hyades. The significant changes in this system's parameters since its discovery highlight the importance of high-resolution spectroscopy for both orbital and atmospheric characterization of directly imaged companions.

The launch of JWST has ushered in a new era of high-precision infrared astronomy, allowing us to probe nearby white dwarfs for cold dust, exoplanets, and tidally heated exomoons. While previous searches for these exoplanets have successfully ruled out companions as small as 7–10 Jupiter masses ( M _Jup) , no instrument prior to JWST has been sensitive to the likely more common sub-Jovian-mass planets around white dwarfs. In this paper, we present the first multiband photometry (F560W, F770W, F1500W, F2100W) taken of WD 2149+021 with the Mid-Infrared Instrument on JWST. After a careful search for both resolved and unresolved planets, we do not identify any compelling candidates around WD 2149+021. Our analysis indicates that we are sensitive to companions as small as ∼0.5 M _Jup outwards of 1.″263 (28.3 au) and ∼1.0 M _Jup at the innermost working angle (0.″654, 14.7 au) at 3 Gyr with 5 σ confidence, placing significant constraints on any undetected companions around this white dwarf. The results of these observations emphasize the exciting future of sub-Jovian planet detection limits by JWST, which can begin to constrain how often these planets survive their host stars' evolution.

Potentially habitable planets around nearby stars less massive than solar-type stars could join targets of the spectroscopy of the planetary reflected light with future space telescopes. However, the orbits of most of these planets occur near the diffraction limit for 6 m diameter telescopes. Thus, while securing contrast-mitigation ability under a broad spectral bandwidth and a finite stellar angular diameter, we must maintain planetary throughput even at the diffraction-limited angles to be able to reduce the effect of the photon noise within a reasonable observation time. A one-dimensional diffraction-limited coronagraph (1DDLC) observes planets near the diffraction limit with undistorted point spread functions but has a finite-stellar diameter problem in wideband use. This study presents a method for wide-spectral-band nulling insensitive to stellar-angular-diameter by adding a fiber nulling with a Lyot-plane phase mask to the 1DDLC. Designing the pattern of the Lyot-plane mask function focuses on the parity of the amplitude spread function of light. Our numerical simulation shows that the planetary throughput (including the fiber-coupling efficiency) can reach about 11% for about 1.35- λ / D planetary separation almost independently of the spectral bandwidth. The simulation also shows the raw contrast of about 4 × 10 ^−8 (the spectral bandwidth of 25%) and 5 × 10 ^−10 (the spectral bandwidth of 10%) for 3 × 10 ^−2 λ / D stellar angular diameter. The planetary throughput depends on the planetary azimuthal angle, which may degrade the exploration efficiency compared to an isotropic throughput but is partially offset the wide spectral band.

We present the direct-imaging discovery of a substellar companion (a massive planet or low-mass brown dwarf) to the young, γ Doradus ( γ Dor)-type variable star HIP 39017 (HD 65526). The companion’s SCExAO/CHARIS JHK (1.1–2.4 μ m) spectrum and Keck/NIRC2 $L^{\prime} $ photometry indicate that it is an L/T transition object. A comparison of the JHK + L $^{\prime} $ spectrum to several atmospheric model grids finds a significantly better fit to cloudy models than cloudless models. Orbit modeling with relative astrometry and precision stellar astrometry from Hipparcos and Gaia yields a semimajor axis of ${23.8}_{-6.1}^{+8.7}$ au, a dynamical companion mass of ${30}_{-12}^{+31}$ M _J , and a mass ratio of ∼1.9%, properties most consistent with low-mass brown dwarfs. However, its mass estimated from luminosity models is a lower ∼13.8 M _J due to an estimated young age (≲115 Myr); using a weighted posterior distribution informed by conservative mass constraints from luminosity evolutionary models yields a lower dynamical mass of ${23.6}_{-7.4}^{+9.1}$ M _J and a mass ratio of ∼1.4%. Analysis of the host star’s multifrequency γ Dor-type pulsations, astrometric monitoring of HIP 39017 b, and Gaia Data Release 4 astrometry of the star will clarify the system age and better constrain the mass and orbit of the companion. This discovery further reinforces the improved efficiency of targeted direct-imaging campaigns informed by long-baseline, precision stellar astrometry.

We present JWST/NIRCam F187N, F200W, F405N, and F410M direct imaging data of the disk surrounding SAO 206462. Previous images show a very structured disk, with a pair of spiral arms thought to be launched by one or more external perturbers. The spiral features are visible in three of the four filters, with the nondetection in F410M due to the large detector saturation radius. We detect with a signal-to-noise ratio of 4.4 a companion candidate that, if on a coplanar circular orbit, would orbit SAO 206462 at a separation of ∼300 au, 2.25 σ away from the predicted separation for the driver of the eastern spiral. No other companion candidates were detected. At the location predicted by simulations of both spirals generated by a single massive companion, the NIRCam data exclude objects more massive than ∼2.2 M _J assuming the BEX evolutionary models. In terms of temperatures, the data are sensitive to objects with T _eff ∼ 650–850 K, when assuming planets emit like blackbodies ( R _p between 1 and 3 R _J ). From these results, we conclude that if the spirals are driven by gas giants, these must be either cold or embedded in circumplanetary material. In addition, the NIRCam data provide tight constraints on ongoing accretion processes. In the low extinction scenario we are sensitive to mass accretion rates of the order $\dot{M}\sim {10}^{-9}{M}_{{\rm{J}}}$ yr ^−1 . Thanks to the longer wavelengths used to search for emission lines, we reach unprecedented sensitivities to processes with $\dot{M}\sim {10}^{-7}{M}_{{\rm{J}}}$ yr ^−1 even toward highly extincted environments ( A _V ≈ 50 mag).

As part of the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) Guaranteed Time Observation program “Direct Imaging of YSOs” (program ID 1179), we use JWST NIRCam’s direct imaging mode in F187N, F200W, F405N, and F410M to perform high-contrast observations of the circumstellar structures surrounding the protostar HL Tau. The data reveal the known stellar envelope, outflow cavity, and streamers, but do not detect any companion candidates. We detect scattered light from an inflowing spiral streamer previously detected in HCO ^+ by the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array, and part of the structure connected to the c-shaped outflow cavity. For detection limits in planet mass we use BEX evolutionary tracks when M _p < 2 M _J and AMES-COND evolutionary tracks otherwise, assuming a planet age of 1 Myr (youngest available age). Inside the disk region, due to extended envelope emission, our point-source sensitivities are ∼5 mJy (37 M _J ) at 40 au in F187N and ∼0.37 mJy (5.2 M _J ) at 140 au in F405N. Outside the disk region, the deepest limits we can reach are ∼0.01 mJy (0.75 M _J ) at a projected separation ∼ 525 au.

Giant planets grow by accreting gas through circumplanetary disks, but little is known about the timescale and mechanisms involved in the planet-assembly process because few accreting protoplanets have been discovered. Recent visible and infrared imaging revealed a potential accreting protoplanet within the transition disk around the young intermediate-mass Herbig Ae star, AB Aurigae (AB Aur). Additional imaging in H α probed for accretion and found agreement between the line-to-continuum flux ratio of the star and companion, raising the possibility that the emission source could be a compact disk feature seen in scattered starlight. We present new deep Keck/NIRC2 high-contrast imaging of AB Aur to characterize emission in Pa β , another accretion tracer less subject to extinction. Our narrow band observations reach a 5 σ contrast of 9.6 mag at 0.″6, but we do not detect significant emission at the expected location of the companion, nor from other any other source in the system. Our upper limit on Pa β emission suggests that if AB Aur b is a protoplanet, it is not heavily accreting or accretion is stochastic and was weak during the observations.

Photonic lanterns (PLs) are tapered waveguides that gradually transition from a multimode fiber geometry to a bundle of single-mode fibers (SMFs). They can efficiently couple multimode telescope light into a multimode fiber entrance at the focal plane and convert it into multiple single-mode beams. Thus, each SMF samples its unique mode (lantern principal mode) of the telescope light in the pupil, analogous to subapertures in aperture masking interferometry (AMI). Coherent imaging with PLs can be enabled by the interference of SMF outputs and applying phase modulation, which can be achieved using a photonic chip beam combiner at the backend (e.g., the ABCD beam combiner). In this study, we investigate the potential of coherent imaging by the interference of SMF outputs of a PL with a single telescope. We demonstrate that the visibilities that can be measured from a PL are mutual intensities incident on the pupil weighted by the cross correlation of a pair of lantern modes. From numerically simulated lantern principal modes of a 6-port PL, we find that interferometric observables using a PL behave similarly to separated-aperture visibilities for simple models on small angular scales (< λ / D ) but with greater sensitivity to symmetries and capability to break phase angle degeneracies. Furthermore, we present simulated observations with wave front errors (WFEs) and compare them to AMI. Despite the redundancy caused by extended lantern principal modes, spatial filtering offers stability to WFEs. Our simulated observations suggest that PLs may offer significant benefits in the photon-noise-limited regime and in resolving small angular scales at the low-contrast regime.

Directly observing exoplanets with coronagraphs is impeded by the presence of speckles from aberrations in the optical path, which can be mitigated in hardware with wave front control, as well as in post-processing. This work explores using an instrument model in post-processing to separate astrophysical signals from residual aberrations in coronagraphic data. The effect of wave front error (WFE) on the coronagraphic intensity consists of a linear contribution and a quadratic contribution. When either of the terms is much larger than the other, the instrument response can be approximated by a transfer matrix mapping WFE to detector plane intensity. From this transfer matrix, a useful projection onto instrumental modes that removes the dominant error modes can be derived. We apply this approach to synthetically generated Roman Space Telescope hybrid Lyot coronagraph data to extract “robust observables,” which can be used instead of raw data for applications such as detection testing. The projection improves planet flux ratio detection limits by about 28% in the linear regime and by over a factor of 2 in the quadratic regime, illustrating that robust observables can increase sensitivity to astrophysical signals and improve the scientific yield from coronagraphic data. While this approach does not require additional information such as observations of reference stars or modulations of a deformable mirror, it can and should be combined with these other techniques, acting as a model-informed prior in an overall post-processing strategy.

The Habitable Worlds Observatory Preliminary Input Catalog (HPIC) is a list of ∼13,000 nearby bright stars that will be potential targets for the Habitable Worlds Observatory (HWO) in its search for Earth-sized planets around Sun-like stars. We construct this target list using the TESS and Gaia DR3 catalogs and develop an automated pipeline to compile stellar measurements and derived astrophysical properties for all stars. We benchmark the stellar properties in the HPIC relative to those of the manually curated ExEP HWO Precursor Science Stars list and find that, for the 164 best targets for exo-Earth direct imaging, our stellar properties are consistent. We demonstrate the utility of the HPIC by using it as an input for yield calculations to predict the science output of various mission designs, including those with larger telescope diameters and those focused on other planet types besides Earth analogs, such as Jupiter-mass planets. The breadth and completeness of the HPIC is essential for accurate HWO mission trade studies, and it will be useful for other exoplanet studies and general astrophysics studying the population of bright nearby stars.

We present a novel machine-learning approach for detecting faint point sources in high-contrast adaptive optics (AO) imaging data sets. The most widely used algorithms for primary subtraction aim to decouple bright stellar speckle noise from planetary signatures by subtracting an approximation of the temporally evolving stellar noise from each frame in an imaging sequence. Our approach aims to improve the stellar noise approximation and increase the planet detection sensitivity by leveraging deep learning in a novel direct imaging post-processing algorithm. We show that a convolutional autoencoder neural network, trained on an extensive reference library of real imaging sequences, accurately reconstructs the stellar speckle noise at the location of a potential planet signal. This tool is used in a post-processing algorithm we call Direct Exoplanet Detection with Convolutional Image Reconstruction, or ConStruct . The reliability and sensitivity of ConStruct are assessed using real Keck/NIRC2 angular differential imaging data sets. Of the 30 unique point sources we examine, ConStruct yields a higher signal-to-noise ratio than traditional principal component analysis-based processing for 67% of the cases and improves the relative contrast by up to a factor of 2.6. This work demonstrates the value and potential of deep learning to take advantage of a diverse reference library of point-spread function realizations to improve direct imaging post-processing. ConStruct and its future improvements may be particularly useful as tools for post-processing high-contrast images from JWST and extreme AO instruments, both for the current generation and those being designed for the upcoming 30 m class telescopes.

The Galileo spacecraft had distant encounters with Earth in 1990 and 1992. Limited Solid State Imager (SSI) data acquired during these encounters has been previously presented, but the majority of the data from these Earth flybys have not been presented in the literature. Observations of Earth taken from afar are both rare and directly relevant to the development of any future exo-Earth direct imaging mission. Here we present a pipeline that vets, calibrates, and measures the disk-integrated brightness of the Earth, in multiple filters, from the complete SSI data sets from both the 1990 and 1992 Galileo flybys. The result is over 1500 usable photometric measurements for Earth as an analog for an exoplanet. The 1990 data set includes full rotational lightcurves in six bandpasses spanning the optical range. The 1992 data set is more limited, with lightcurves only spanning 14 hr. Time-averaged photometry for both encounters is presented while variability and color are discussed relative to findings from NASA’s EPOXI mission (which also provided photometric lighturves for Earth). The new Galileo/SSI data are used to further validate the Virtual Planetary Laboratory 3D spectral Earth model, which often serves as a stand-in for true disk-integrated observations of our planet. The revived Galileo/SSI data for Earth is a testament to the ability of NASA’s Planetary Data System to maintain data over decades-long timescales. The disk-integrated products derived from these data add to a very short list of calibrated and published whole-disk observations of the Pale Blue Dot.

Exoplanet characterization missions planned for the future will soon enable searches for life beyond our solar system. Critical to the search will be the development of life detection strategies that can search for biosignatures while maintaining observational efficiency. In this work, we adopted a newly developed biosignature decision tree strategy for remote characterization of Earthlike exoplanets. The decision tree offers a step-by-step roadmap for detecting exoplanet biosignatures and excluding false positives, based on Earth’s biosphere and its evolution over time. We followed the pathways for characterizing a modern-Earth-like planet and an Archean-Earth-like planet and evaluated the observational trades associated with coronagraph bandpass combinations of designs consistent with the Habitable Worlds Observatory precursor studies. With retrieval analyses of each bandpass (or combination), we demonstrate the utility of the decision tree and evaluate the uncertainty on a suite of biosignature chemical species and habitability indicators (i.e., the gas abundances of H _2 O, O _2 , O _3 , CH _4 , and CO _2 ). Notably for modern Earth, less than an order of magnitude spread in the 1 σ uncertainties was achieved for the abundances of H _2 O and O _2 , planetary surface pressure, and atmospheric temperature, with three strategically placed bandpasses (two in the visible and one in the near-infrared). For the Archean, CH _4 and H _2 O were detectable in the visible with a single bandpass.

We present resolved images of the inner disk component around HD 141569A using the Magellan adaptive optics system with the Clio2 1–5 μ m camera, offering a glimpse of a complex system thought to be in a short evolutionary phase between protoplanetary and debris disk stages. We use a reference star along with the Karhunen–Loéve image projection (KLIP) algorithm for point-spread function subtraction to detect the disk inward to about 0.″24 (∼25 au assuming a distance of 111 pc) at high signal-to-noise ratios at $L^{\prime} $ (3.8 μ m), Ls (3.3 μ m), and narrowband Ice (3.1 μ m). We identify an arc or spiral arm structure at the southeast extremity, consistent with previous studies. We implement forward modeling with a simple disk model within the framework of a Markov Chain Monte Carlo sampler to better constrain the geometrical attributes and photometry using our KLIP-reduced disk images. We then leverage these modeling results to facilitate a comparison of the measured brightness in each passband to find a reduction in scattered light from the disk in the Ice filter, implying significant absorption due to water ice in the dust. Additionally, our best-fit disk models exhibit peak brightness in the southwestern, back-scattering region of the disk, which we suggest to be possible evidence of 3.3 μ m polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon emission. However, we point out the need for additional observations with bluer filters and more complex modeling to confirm these hypotheses.

High-contrast direct imaging of exoplanets can provide many important observables, including measurements of the orbit, spectra that probe the lower layers of the atmosphere, and phase variations of the planet, but cannot directly measure planet radius or mass. Our future understanding of directly imaged exoplanets will therefore rely on extrapolated models of planetary atmospheres and bulk composition, which need robust calibration. We estimate the population of extrasolar planets that could serve as calibrators for these models. Critically, this population of "standard planets" must be accessible to both direct imaging and the transit method, allowing for radius measurement. We show that the search volume of a direct imaging mission eventually overcomes the transit probability falloff with semimajor axis, so that as long as cold planets are not exceedingly rare, the population of transiting planets and directly imageable planets overlaps. Using current extrapolations of Kepler occurrence rates, we estimate that ∼8 standard planets could be characterized shortward of 800 nm with an ambitious future direct imaging mission like LUVOIR-A and several dozen could be detected at the V band. We show the design space that would expand the sample size and discuss the extent to which ground-and space-based surveys could detect this small but crucial population of planets.

We report the detection of a Saturn-size exoplanet orbiting HD 332231 (TOI 1456) in light curves from the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS). HD 332231 - an F8 dwarf star with a V-band magnitude of 8.56 - was observed by TESS in Sectors 14 and 15. We detect a single-transit event in the Sector 15 presearch data conditioning (PDC) light curve. We obtain spectroscopic follow-up observations of HD 332231 with the Automated Planet Finder, Keck I, and SONG telescopes. The orbital period we infer from radial velocity (RV) observations leads to the discovery of another transit in Sector 14 that was masked by PDC due to scattered light contamination. A joint analysis of the transit and RV data confirms the planetary nature of HD 332231 b, a Saturn-size (0.867-0.025+0.027RJ), sub-Saturn-mass (0.244±0.021MJ) exoplanet on a 18.71 day circular orbit. The low surface gravity of HD 332231 b and the relatively low stellar flux it receives make it a compelling target for transmission spectroscopy. Also, the stellar obliquity is likely measurable via the Rossiter-McLaughlin effect, an exciting prospect given the 0.14 au orbital separation of HD 332231 b. The spectroscopic observations do not provide substantial evidence for any additional planets in the HD 332231 system, but continued RV monitoring is needed to further characterize this system. We also predict that the frequency and duration of masked data in the PDC light curves for TESS Sectors 14-16 could hide transits of some exoplanets with orbital periods between 10.5 and 17.5 days.

Few single‐molecule experiments have enabled the direct imaging of functional biomacromolecules in real‐time in their native liquid environments, resolving their conformational adaptations, transient interactions, and intermediate states. Liquid phase electron microscopy (LP‐EM), due to its unique combination of spatial and temporal resolution, has shown to be a promising tool. Recent experiments have enabled successful imaging of intact structures of organic molecules and biological systems with an ordinary electron microscope. Adapting image processing methods and quantitative data analysis from single particle experiments based on the optical microscope, quantifying motion and relaxation of these interacting molecules allows the experimental observations of pathways, to test theoretical predictions, and discovery of new mechanisms. Combining LP‐EM with tomography, fluorescence, and mass spectroscopy allows for probing multi‐dimensional structural and dynamic information. Challenges remain in obtaining high‐quality data in large quantities, which can be improved by developing new liquid cell platforms and machine learning‐based data analysis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) B-modes detection is the main focus of future CMB experiments because of the valuable information it contains, particularly to probe the physics of the very early universe. For this reason, we have developed an optimized polarimeter demonstrator sensitive to the 10–20 GHz band in which the signal received by each antenna is modulated into a Near Infrared (NIR) laser by a Mach–Zehnder modulator. Then, these modulated signals are optically correlated and detected using photonic back-end modules consisting of voltage-controlled phase shifters, a 90-degree optical hybrid, a pair of lenses, and an NIR camera. During laboratory tests, a 1/f-like noise signal related to the low phase stability of the demonstrator has been found experimentally. To solve this issue, we have developed a calibration method that allows us to remove this noise in an actual experiment, until obtaining the required accuracy level in the measurement of polarization. The crystallization of materials from a suspension determines the structure and function of the final product, and numerous pieces of evidence have pointed out that the classical crystallization pathway may not capture the whole picture of the crystallization pathways. However, visualizing the initial nucleation and further growth of a crystal at the nanoscale has been challenging due to the difficulties of imaging individual atoms or nanoparticles during the crystallization process in solution. Recent progress in nanoscale microscopy had tackled this problem by monitoring the dynamic structural evolution of crystallization in a liquid environment. In this review, we summarized several crystallization pathways captured by the liquid-phase transmission electron microscopy technique and compared the observations with computer simulation. Apart from the classical nucleation pathway, we highlight three nonclassical pathways that are both observed in experiments and computer simulations: formation of an amorphous cluster below the critical nucleus size, nucleation of the crystalline phase from an amorphous intermediate, and transition between multiple crystalline structures before achieving the final product. Among these pathways, we also highlight the similarities and differences between the experimental results of the crystallization of single nanocrystals from atoms and the assembly of a colloidal superlattice from a large number of colloidal nanoparticles. By comparing the experimental results with computer simulations, we point out the importance of theory and simulation in developing a mechanistic approach to facilitate the understanding of the crystallization pathway in experimental systems. We also discuss the challenges and future perspectives for investigating the crystallization pathways at the nanoscale with the development of in situ nanoscale imaging techniques and potential applications to the understanding of biomineralization and protein self-assembly. Objective. Magnetic particle imaging (MPI) is a novel radiation-free medical imaging modality that can directly image superparamagnetic iron oxide tracers (SPIOs) with high sensitivity, temporal resolution, and good spatial resolution. The MPI reconstruction task can be formulated mathematically as a Fredholm integral problem, but the concrete inversion is not easily possible because of the particle dynamics or scanner issues. Measurement based system matrix inversion takes these factors into account, but prior measurement and calibration are time consuming. Approach. We proposed a direct imaging method based on the weighted sum of harmonic signals. The harmonic signals with spatial information are obtained by the short-time Fourier transform, and odd harmonic components are selected for recombination and then mapped to the sampling trajectory to image the concentration distribution of SPIOs. In addition, we adopt a normalized-weighted sum of harmonics to improve the resolution of the native image. Main results. The effectiveness of the proposed method is verified by simulation imaging experiments and our in-house scanner-based experiments. Quantitative evaluation results show that compared with traditional methods, the structural similarity improved by 48%, mean square error decreased by 88%, and signal-to-artifact ratio increased by 2.5 times. Significance. The proposed method can rapidly image the concentration distribution of nanoparticles without any prior calibration measurements and reduce the blur of MPI images without deconvolution, which has the potential to be implemented as a multi-patch imaging method in MPI. Isotope ratios have recently been measured in the atmospheres of directly imaged and transiting exoplanets from ground-based observations. The arrival of JWST allows us to characterize exoplanetary atmospheres in further detail and opens up wavelengths inaccessible from the ground. In this work we constrain the carbon and oxygen isotopes ^13 C, ^18 O, and ^17 O from CO in the atmosphere of the directly imaged companion VHS 1256 b through retrievals of the ∼4.1–5.3 μ m NIRSpec G395H/F290LP observations from the early-release science program (ERS 1386). We detect and constrain ^13 C ^16 O, ^12 C ^18 O, and ^12 C ^17 O at 32 σ , 16 σ , and 10 σ confidence respectively, thanks to the very high signal-to-noise observations. We find the ratio of abundances are more precisely constrained than their absolute values, with ${}^{12}{\rm{C}}{/}^{13}{\rm{C}}={62}_{-2}^{+2}$ , in between previous measurements for companions (∼30) and isolated brown dwarfs (∼100). The oxygen isotope ratios are ${}^{16}{\rm{O}}{/}^{18}{\rm{O}}={425}_{-28}^{+33}$ and ${}^{16}{\rm{O}}{/}^{17}{\rm{O}}={1010}_{-100}^{+120}$ . All of the ratios are lower than the local interstellar medium and solar system, suggesting that abundances of the more minor isotopes are enhanced compared to the primary. This could be driven by isotope fractionation in protoplanetary disks, which can potentially alter the carbon and oxygen ratios through isotope selective photodissociation, gas/ice partitioning, and isotopic exchange reactions. In addition to CO, we constrain ^1 H ${}_{2}^{16}{\rm{O}}$ and ^12 C ^16 O _2 (the primary isotopologues of both species), but find only upper limits on ^12 C ^1 H _4 and ^14 N ^1 H _3 . This work highlights the power of JWST to constrain isotopes in exoplanet atmospheres, with great promise in determining formation histories in the future.

We present the direct-imaging discovery of a giant planet orbiting the young star AF Lep, a 1.2 M _⊙ member of the 24 ± 3 Myr β Pic moving group. AF Lep was observed as part of our ongoing high-contrast imaging program targeting stars with astrometric accelerations between Hipparcos and Gaia that indicate the presence of substellar companions. Keck/NIRC2 observations in $L^{\prime} $ with the vector vortex coronagraph reveal a point source, AF Lep b, at ≈340 mas, which exhibits orbital motion at the 6 σ level over the course of 13 months. A joint orbit fit yields precise constraints on the planet’s dynamical mass of ${3.2}_{-0.6}^{+0.7}$ M _Jup , semimajor axis of ${8.4}_{-1.3}^{+1.1}$ au, and eccentricity of ${0.24}_{-0.15}^{+0.27}$ . AF Lep hosts a debris disk located at ∼50 au, but it is unlikely to be sculpted by AF Lep b, implying there may be additional planets in the system at wider separations. The stellar inclination ( i _* = ${54}_{-9}^{{+11}^\circ} $ ) and orbital inclination ( i _o = ${50}_{-12}^{{+9}^\circ} $ ) are in good agreement, which is consistent with the system having spin–orbit alignment. AF Lep b is the lowest-mass imaged planet with a dynamical mass measurement and highlights the promise of using astrometric accelerations as a tool to find and characterize long-period planets.

We present the data release and data reduction process for the Epoch 1 NIRCam observations for the Cosmic Evolution Early Release Science Survey (CEERS). These data consist of NIRCam imaging in six broadband filters (F115W, F150W, F200W, F277W, F356W and F444W) and one medium-band filter (F410M) over four pointings, obtained in parallel with primary CEERS MIRI observations. We reduced the NIRCam imaging with the JWST Calibration Pipeline, with custom modifications and reduction steps designed to address additional features and challenges with the data. Here we provide a detailed description of each step in our reduction and a discussion of future expected improvements. Our reduction process includes corrections for known prelaunch issues such as 1/ f noise, as well as in-flight issues including snowballs, wisps, and astrometric alignment. Many of our custom reduction processes were first developed with prelaunch simulated NIRCam imaging over the full 10 CEERS NIRCam pointings. We present a description of the creation and reduction of this simulated data set in the Appendix. We provide mosaics of the real images in a public release, as well as our reduction scripts with detailed explanations to allow users to reproduce our final data products. These represent one of the first official public data sets released from the Directors Discretionary Early Release Science (DD-ERS) program.

Direct detection and characterization of Earth-like planets around Sun-like stars is a core task for evaluating the prevalence of habitability and life in the Universe. Here, we discuss a promising option for achieving this goal, which is based on placing an occulter in orbit and having it project its shadow onto the E-ELT at the surface of Earth, thus providing a sufficient contrast for imaging and taking spectra of Earth-like planets in the habitable zones of Sun-like stars. Doing so at a sensible fuel budget will require tailored orbits, an occulter with a high area-to-mass ratio, and appropriate instrumentation at the E-ELT. In this White Paper, submitted in response to the ESA Voyage 2050 Call, we outline the fundamental aspects of the concept, and the most important technical developments that will be required to develop a full mission. Incorporating hetero‐metal‐atom, e.g. titanium, into zeolite frameworks can enhance the catalytic activity and selectivity in oxidation reactions. However, the rational design of zeolites containing titanium at specific sites is difficult because the precise atomic structure during synthesis process remained unclear. Here, a titanosilicate with predictable titanium distribution was synthesized by mediating vacancies in a defective MSE‐type zeolite precursor, based on a pre‐designed synthetic route including modification of vacancies followed by titanium insertion, where electron microscopy (EM) plays a key role at each step resolving the atomic structure. Point defects including vacancies in the precursor and titanium incorporated into the vacancy‐related positions have been directly observed. The results provide insights into the role of point defects in zeolites towards the rational synthesis of zeolites with desired microscopic arrangement of catalytically active sites.
