Abstract

A very hot debate is currently focused on submerged substrates that can be classified either as sediments or subaqueous soils. In this paper, the controversy is contextualized on a specific case study, i.e. the Sacca di Goro coastal lagoon facing the North Adriatic Sea. The submerged substrate has been sampled along a a E-W transect and subsequently analyzed to investigate the C-N elemental and isotopic compositions. The recorded concentration of organic carbon (OC) and nitrogen is 0.26-0.50 and 0.02-0.06 wt%, respectively, and the spatial distribution of these parameters highlights a general decrease of concentration from W to E. The carbon isotopic composition of the organic matter (δ13COC) indicates the incorporation within the substrate of significant amount of seaweed and seagrass. Seaweed prevails in the west (δ13COC down to -19‰) due to a nutrient-rich freshwater inflow (Po di Volano), whereas seagrass is preponderant eastward (δ13COC up to -10‰) in a sector of the lagoon fed by riverine waters characterized by lower nutrient load (Po di Goro). The existence of these biological components plausibly implies a lush benthic vegetation, properly rooted on the submerged floor. For this reason, in our view the substrate of the investigated lagoon can be regarded as a subaqueous soil.

Abstract

In this contribution we present ICP-MS analyses carried out on agricultural soils from the eastern-most part of the Padanian plain (Ferrara Province) and on the related crop products. The aim is to provide, for the first time, backgrounds for some trace elements such as rare earth elements (REE), thorium (Th), uranium (U) and to understand the related phytoavailability. In particular, detailed analyses have been done on Sorghum Vulgare plants, analyzing distinct plant parts in different vegetative periods. Results indicate that a) REE concentration in plant tissues is always lower than in the related soils, precluding the occurrence of bioaccumulation and b) no preferential elemental uptake and REE fractionation. In this light, the observed soil/plant relationships could be used in the definition of markers of territoriality (provenance fingerprint) for agricultural products.

Abstract

This is the third of a series of papers on three-loop computation of renormalization constants for Lattice QCD. Our main point of interest are results for the regularization defined by Iwasaki gauge action and n_f=4 Wilson fermions. Our results for quark bilinears renormalized according to the RI'-MOM scheme can be compared to non-perturbative results. The latter are available for Twisted Mass QCD: being defined in the chiral limit, renormalization constants must be the same. We also address more general problems. In particular, we discuss a few methodological issues connected to summing the perturbative series such as the effectiveness of Boosted Perturbation Theory and the disentanglement of irrelevant and finite volume contributions. Discussing these issues we consider ont only the new results of this paper, but also those for the regularization defined by tree-level Symanzik improved gauge action and n_f=2 Wilson fermions, which we presented in a recent paper of ours. Abstract

Covered by ultrabasic units for more than a third of its surface, the New Caledonia (South West Pacific) is one of the largest world producers of Ni-ore from lateritic deposits. Almost all outcrops of geological units and open mines contain serpentine and amphibole, also as asbestos varieties. In this geological context, in which weathering processes had a great contribution in the production and dispersion of mineral fibres into the environment, the development of a routinely analytical strategy, able to discriminate an asbestiform fibre from a non-harmful particle, is a pivotal requisite. However, the acquisition of all these parameters is necessary for determining the risk associated to fibres exposition. A multidisciplinary routinely approach, based on the use of complementary simply-to-use but reliable analytical methods is the only possible strategy. In addition, the instrumental apparatus must be easily transportable on the field, directly on the mining site. The employment of specialized tools such as Polarized Light Microscopy associated to Dispersion Staining method (PLM/DS) and portable Raman spectroscopy for identification of environmental asbestos, are proved extremely effective in the improvement of the performance and rapidity of data acquisition and interpretation. Both PLM/DS and handheld Raman devices confirmed to be discriminant in the detection and characterization of asbestos fibres for both serpentine and amphibole. Furthermore, these techniques proved extremely effective even in the presence of strongly fibrous and altered samples. Abstract

Asbestos inhalation is associated with fatal respiratory diseases and raises concerns from the perspective of workplace safety and environmental impacts. Asbestos and asbestos-like minerals naturally occur in rocks and may become airborne when outcrops or soils are disturbed by anthropic activities. In situ detection of these minerals is a crucial step for the risk evaluation of natural sites. We assess here whether a portable Raman spectrometer (pRS) may be used in the identification of asbestos and asbestos-like minerals at the mining front during exploitation. pRS performance was tested at three geologically different mining sites in Italy and New Caledonia and compared with a high-resolution micro-Raman spectrometer (HRS). About 80% of the overall in situ analyses at the mining front were successfully identified by pRS, even when intermixed phases or strongly disaggregated and altered samples were analyzed. Chrysotile and tremolite asbestos, asbestos-like antigorite, and balangeroite were correctly detected during surveys. The major difficulties faced during in situ pRS measurements were fluorescence emission and focussing the laser beam on non-cohesive bundles of fibers. pRS is adequate for discriminating asbestos and asbestos-like minerals in situ. pRS may support risk assessment of mining sites to better protect workers and environment.

Abstract

Euclid is an ESA mission designed to constrain the properties of dark energy and gravity via weak gravitational lensing and galaxy clustering. It will carry out a wide area imaging and spectroscopy survey (EWS) in visible and near-infrared, covering roughly 15,000 square degrees of extragalactic sky on six years. The wide-field telescope and instruments are optimized for pristine PSF and reduced straylight, producing very crisp images. This paper presents the building of the Euclid reference survey: the sequence of pointings of EWS, Deep fields, Auxiliary fields for calibrations, and spacecraft movements followed by Euclid as it operates in a step-and-stare mode from its orbit around the Lagrange point L2. Each EWS pointing has four dithered frames; we simulate the dither pattern at pixel level to analyse the effective coverage. We use up-to-date models for the sky background to define the Euclid region-of-interest (RoI). The building of the reference survey is highly constrained from calibration cadences, spacecraft constraints and background levels; synergies with ground-based coverage are also considered. Via purposely-built software optimized to prioritize best sky areas, produce a compact coverage, and ensure thermal stability, we generate a schedule for the Auxiliary and Deep fields observations and schedule the RoI with EWS transit observations. The resulting reference survey RSD_2021A fulfills all constraints and is a good proxy for the final solution. Its wide survey covers 14,500 square degrees. The limiting AB magnitudes ($5\sigma$ point-like source) achieved in its footprint are estimated to be 26.2 (visible) and 24.5 (near-infrared); for spectroscopy, the H$_\alpha$ line flux limit is $2\times 10^{-16}$ erg cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ at 1600 nm; and for diffuse emission the surface brightness limits are 29.8 (visible) and 28.4 (near-infrared) mag arcsec$^{-2}$., Comment: 43 pages, 51 figures, submitted to A&A

Abstract

International audience; The formation of aggregates is commonly observed in soft matter such as globular protein solutions and colloidal suspensions. A lively debated issue concerns the possibility to discriminate between a generic intermediate-range order taking place in the fluid, as contrasted with the more specific presence of a clustered state. Recently, we have predicted by Monte Carlo simulations of a standard colloidal model — spherical particles interacting via a short-range attraction followed by a screened electrostatic repulsion at larger distances — the existence of a tiny structural change occurring in the pair structure. This change consists in a reversal of trend affecting a portion of the local density as the attractive strength increases, that is shown to take place precisely at the clustering threshold. Here, we address the same issue by refined thermodynamically self-consistent integral equation theories of the liquid state. We document how such theoretical schemes positively account for the observed phenomenology, highlighting their accuracy to finely describe the aggregation processes in model fluids with microscopic competing interactions.

Abstract

International audience; In a preliminary study [Phys. Chem. Chem. Phys., 2017, 19, 15247], we have recently documented an elusive mechanism underlying the cluster formation in model fluids with microscopic competing interactions (hard-sphere two-Yukawa). This mechanism consists in a tiny rearrangement of a distant correlation peak in the local density profile. For weak attractions, this peak contributes to the shallow, long-wave oscillation typical of such fluids; as the attraction strengthens, such a portion progressively disengages from the long-range behaviour, and moving backwards takes on the character of a new shell of neighbours, falling beyond the existing ones at shorter distances. This “reversal of trend” – despite its tiny size, in comparison with the overall aspect of the density profile – is shown to precisely occur at the onset of clustering. The scope of the present study is twofold. In the first instance, we positively assess our preliminary finding. To this aim we have studied by Monte Carlo simulations different families of two-Yukawa fluids, under the same conditions investigated in the original paper, namely fixed temperature, high fluid-density and increasingly attractive strength. Apparently, the reversal of trend in spatial correlations sets as a sensitive criterion to identify the clustering threshold, complementing other common indicators, based on the modifications undergone by the low-wavevector peak in the structure factor. Secondly, we document the accuracy of the Hypernetted Chain theory in predicting the spatial rearrangement under scrutiny. This evidence paves the way to an extended investigation of the observed phenomenology by the complementary use of theoretical and simulation tools.

Abstract

The large amount of geochemical variability in peridotitic and pyroxenitic xenoliths exhumed by Eocene to present-day magmas in Patagonia provides a unique opportunity to investigate the depletion and enrichment processes affecting the lithosphere in proximity of subduction settings and their relationships with magmatism. In this study, a review of the geochemical features of the Patagonian ultramafic xenoliths coupled with new SrNd isotopic data on clinopyroxene separates from representative suites enabled us to delineate the main melt extraction and enrichment (metasomatism vs. refertilisation) processes acting in these sub-continental lithospheric mantle (SCLM) portions. Our findings show that clinopyroxenes and orthopyroxenes in Patagonian harzburgites/lherzolites lie on two discrete Al2O3/Mg# trends and record variable partial melting degrees (1–30%), progressively decreasing southward, where the mantle domains experienced melt extraction in the past. The occurrence of both negative and positive correlations between (La/Yb)N, SrN, and Al2O3 in clinopyroxenes suggests that large part of the SCLM beneath Patagonia was affected by both metasomatic (low melt-fluid/rock ratio) and refertilisation (high melt-fluid/rock ratio or long-lasting low melt-fluid/rock interaction) processes, while a few portions - particularly in Southern Patagonia - were devoid of significant enrichment processes. A comprehensive study of the major/trace element composition and rare earth element patterns of clinopyroxene from both cumulitic and mantle xenoliths led us to hypothesize that tholeiitic enrichment was followed by infiltration of transitional/alkaline agents in the Northern and Central Patagonian SCLM. The percolation of melts with transitional affinity can be identified in some Central Patagonian localities. In Southern Patagonia clinopyroxenes record a slight interaction with alkaline and proto-adakitic agents; the latter occurred at Cerro Fraile, the locality nearest the trench. The SrNd xenolith isotopic signature led to speculation that enriched and depleted mantle components interacted variably in the SCLM domain beneath Patagonia. This work suggests that a detailed and comprehensive study of ultramafic xenoliths can help identify the evidence produced by magmatic events occurring at the surface, as both a serial affinity and a temporal sequence., This work is part of a co-tutorship Ph.D. held within the 2008 Vinci Project “Matter transfer in suprasubductivemantle in complex converging systems”. Abstract

Ferromagnetic thin films with moderate perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) are known to support weak stripe domains provided film thickness exceeds a critical value. In this work, we performed both an experimental and theoretical investigation of a peculiar phenomenon shown by weak stripe domains: namely, the stripe domains reorientation when a dc magnetic field is applied in the film plane along the direction perpendicular to the stripes axis. We focus on bct α′-Fe8N1−x thin films obtained by N 2 + implantation of α-Fe films epitaxially grown on ZnSe/GaAs(001). By using different ion implantation and heat treatment conditions, we show that it is possible to tune the PMA values. Magnetic force microscopy and vibrating sample magnetometer measurements prove the existence of weak stripe domains at remanence, and of a threshold field for the reorientation of the stripes axis in a transversal field. Using a one-dimensional model of the magnetic stripe domains, where the essential parameter is the maximum canting angle of the stripe magnetization out of the film plane, the various contributions to the magnetic energy can be separately calculated. A linear increase of the reorientation threshold field on the PMA is obtained, in qualitative agreement with experimental data in our Fe–N films, as well as in other thin films with weak stripe domains. Finally, we find that also the rotatable anisotropy field linearly increases as a function of the PMA magnitude.

Abstract

Planck Collaboration: et al., We describe an extension of the most recent version of the Planck Catalogue of Compact Sources (PCCS2), produced using a new multi-band Bayesian Extraction and Estimation Package (BeeP). BeeP assumes that the compact sources present in PCCS2 at 857 GHz have a dust-like spectral energy distribution (SED), which leads to emission at both lower and higher frequencies, and adjusts the parameters of the source and its SED to fit the emission observed in Planck’s three highest frequency channels at 353, 545, and 857 GHz, as well as the IRIS map at 3000 GHz. In order to reduce confusion regarding diffuse cirrus emission, BeeP’s data model includes a description of the background emission surrounding each source, and it adjusts the confidence in the source parameter extraction based on the statistical properties of the spatial distribution of the background emission. BeeP produces the following three new sets of parameters for each source: (a) fits to a modified blackbody (MBB) thermal emission model of the source; (b) SED-independent source flux densities at each frequency considered; and (c) fits to an MBB model of the background in which the source is embedded. BeeP also calculates, for each source, a reliability parameter, which takes into account confusion due to the surrounding cirrus. This parameter can be used to extract sub-samples of high-frequency sources with statistically well-understood properties. We define a high-reliability subset (BeeP/base), containing 26 083 sources (54.1% of the total PCCS2 catalogue), the majority of which have no information on reliability in the PCCS2. We describe the characteristics of this specific high-quality subset of PCCS2 and its validation against other data sets, specifically for: the sub-sample of PCCS2 located in low-cirrus areas; the Planck Catalogue of Galactic Cold Clumps; the Herschel GAMA15-field catalogue; and the temperature- and spectral-index-reconstructed dust maps obtained with Planck’s Generalized Needlet Internal Linear Combination method. Abstract

International audience; A group of ultramafic xenoliths hosted in Cenozoic hypabyssal rocks from Harrow Peaks (northern Victoria Land, Antarctica) show textural and geochemical features far removed from anything previously observed in mantle xenoliths of this region and elsewhere in Antarctica. They consist of spinel-bearing lherzolites and harzburgites, characterised by a predominant equigranular texture with orthopyroxene modal contents remarkably higher in lherzolites (18-26 volume%) with respect to the harzburgite (13 vol%), one orthopyroxenite, and three composite xenoliths. The latter are formed by an olivine-dominant assemblage (olivine > 70%) crosscut by large monomineralic (amphibole or clinopyroxene) or bimineralic (amphibole + clino-pyroxene) veins. No significant correlation was observed between the lithology and the Fo content (90.21-82.81) of olivine, suggesting that these rocks could be derived from a cumulus process. The presence of the orthopyroxenite suggests that the inferred melt/s from which they stemmed was close (or even above) to silica saturation. Based on major and trace-element mineral/melt and mineral/mineral equilibrium modelling, these rocks were formed by progressive extraction of olivine from a high magnesium (Mg = 72)-high temperature (~ 1300 °C) melt following a very short fractionation line. Thermobaro-metric results indicate the stationing of Harrow Peaks cumulates in the P field of 1.3 ± 0.2 (dunites)-0.5 ± 0.2 (orthopy-roxenite) GPa. These values well match the crust/mantle boundary (Moho) of the region. The combined geochemical and petrological data suggest that Harrow Peaks melts could be related to the initial stage of the Jurassic Ferrar magmatism, whose deep cumulates were subsequently affected by the Cenozoic alkaline metasomatism, widely detected in the northern Victoria Land lithosphere and responsible for the formation of the late amphibole/amphibole + clinopyroxene veins.

Abstract

This integrated study (field observations, micropalaeontology, magnetostratigraphy, geochemistry, borehole data and seismic profiles) of the Messinian–Zanclean deposits on Zakynthos Island (Ionian Sea) focuses on the sedimentary succession recording the pre‐evaporitic phase of the Messinian salinity crisis (MSC) through the re‐establishment of the marine conditions in a transitional area between the eastern and the western Mediterranean. Two intervals are distinguished through the palaeoenvironmental reconstruction of the pre‐evaporitic Messinian in Kalamaki: (a) 6.45–6.122 Ma and (b) 6.122–5.97 Ma. Both the planktonic foraminifer and the fish assemblages indicate a cooling phase punctuated by hypersalinity episodes at around 6.05 Ma. Two evaporite units are recognized and associated with the tectonic evolution of the Kalamaki–Argassi area. We study theoretically a prototype hard-sphere two-Yukawa model with competing interactions, under thermodynamic conditions associated with the formation of clusters. We adopt the analytically solvable random phase approximation and show that this theory predicts reasonably well the structure of the fluid—in comparison with exact Monte Carlo results—within a unique parameterization of the direct correlation function inside the hard core of particles. In particular, the theory follows correctly the development, in the structure factor, of a local peak at low wavevectors, as peculiarly associated with the onset of aggregation. We then model the direct correlation function in the same wavevector regime by a Gaussian function, so as to systematically investigate, in a “reverse” scheme, how varying the properties of the local peak modifies the original underlying competing interaction. We show that large variations in the height of the peak are generally associated with comparatively smaller variations in the height of the microscopic repulsive barrier; moreover, the shrinking and shifting towards lower wavevectors of the peak may be interpreted in terms of the displacement of the barrier, producing a substantial enlargement of the range of both the attractive and repulsive contributions to the interaction potential. Abstract

Le programme « ABP, Amiante et bonnes pratiques », a proposé une étude intégrée et pluridisciplinaire depuis l’identification jusqu’au caractère pathogène des fibres issues des minéraux amiantifères présents en secteur minier néo-calédonien.- Au travers d’un échantillonnage d’un panel représentatif des asbestes présents (famille des serpentinites et des amphiboles), les minéralogies, les propriétés physico-chimiques et toxicologiques de ces minéraux amiantifères ont été caractérisées.- À noter que le programme ABP a apporté les premières données toxicologiques sur les fibres d’amiante néo-calédoniennes. Un intérêt particulier est porté sur l’antigorite, minéral fibreux très présent sur le territoire calédonien, notamment en secteur minier, mais non répertorié comme amiante dans la législation hors territoire.

Abstract

Palynological studies are considered as an excellent tool for palaeoaltitude estimates as sedimentary basins receive abundant pollen grains from surrounding uplands, especially through riverine detritic inputs. Here, we provide new evidence for estimating the palaeoaltitude of the Northern and Central Apennines (Italy) during the late Neogene (from the late Tortonian to the early Zandean), based on vegetation data derived from pollen analysis of five sections (Trave, Legnagnone, Cava Li Monti, Maccarone and Stirone). The past vegetation changes reflect shifts in the vegetation belts on the nearby massifs. The climate reconstruction realised on these sites, at sea-level, suggests that mean annual temperatures were higher than today at the end of the Neogene. Therefore, the different vegetation belts occurred at higher elevation than at present to compensate for the higher temperatures. The results obtained in our study suggest that the Northern and Central Apennines were uplifted as early as the Tortonian attaining significant minimum altitudes around 1350 m up to 1500 m at the end of the Miocene in the Central part, a minimum altitude around 1900 m during the Messinian and around 2150 m during the early Zandean in the Northern part. Abstract

We use Monte Carlo simulations to carry out a thorough analysis of structural correlations arising in a relatively dense fluid of rigid spherical particles with prototype competing interactions (short-range attractive and long-range repulsive two-Yukawa model). As the attraction strength increases, we show that the local density of the fluid displays a tiny reversal of trend within specific ranges of interparticle distances, whereupon it decreases first and increases afterwards, passing through a local minimum. Particles involved in this trend display, accordingly, distinct behaviours: for a sufficiently weak attraction, they seem to contribute to the long-wave oscillations typically heralding the formation of patterns in such fluids; for a stronger attraction, after the reversal of the local density has occurred, they form an outer shell of neighbours stabilizing the existing aggregation seeds. Following the increment of attraction, precisely in correspondence of the local density reversal, the local peak developed in the structure factor at small wavevectors markedly rises, signalling—in agreement with recent structural criteria—the onset of a clustered state. A detailed cluster analysis of microscopic configurations fully validates this picture.

Abstract

The Sorbas basin is a reference sector of the Mediterranean basin for the definition of the onset of the Messinian salinity crisis straddling the transition from the open marine deposits (Abad marls) to the Primary Lower Gypsum (Yesares Formation) during the first stage of the crisis, between 5.97 and 5.60 Ma. Because of its proximity to the Atlantic gateway, the Sorbas basin is pivotal for the study of the oceanographic evolution that led to the most dramatic environmental event in the Mediterranean Sea. We measured the carbon (delta C-13), oxygen (delta O-18) and strontium (Sr-87/Sr-86) isotope ratio of 50 samples of planktonic foraminifera, mollusk shells, gypsum and carbonate sediments from the Abad and Yesares Members (Tune and Canos Formation) in the Perales, Hueli, Los Yesos and Rio de Aguas sections. Our results show a long-term trend with most of the values plotting within the range of the global ocean strontium isotope curve and distinct short-term fluctuations on precessional time scale. The investigated geochemical proxies suggest that these oscillations reflect significant input of continental waters into the basin during the humid phase of a single precessional cycle. This implies that the Western Mediterranean did not experience a main disconnection from the global ocean water before and during the first stage of the Messinian salinity crisis and that different Milankovitch forcings played a significant role in determining the seawater geochemistry. Abstract

Three amidoamines containing the N-hydroxyethyl group ( HO Et), namely ( HO Et) 2 N(CH 2 ) 2 C(O)NH 2 ( 1 ), [( HO Et) 2 N(CH 2 ) 2 C(O)NH] 2 CH 2 ( 2 ) and HO EtN[(CH 2 ) 2 C(O)NH 2 ] 2 ( 3 ) have been synthesized by reacting diethanolamine HO Et 2 NH with acrylamide and N , N ′-methylenebisacrylamide (respectively 1 and 2 ) and ethanolamine HO EtNH 2 with acrylamide ( 3 ). Four other compounds corresponding to 1 and 2 , but derived from sec -amines Me 2 NH ( 4 and 5 ) and Et 2 NH ( 6 and 7 ) have been prepared for the sake of comparison of the spectroscopic features. All compounds have been obtained by the well-known aza-Michael addition between an N-nucleophile and an activated vinyl group. The reaction in water between diethanolamine and acrylamide leading to 1 has been monitored in situ by Raman and NMR spectroscopy, both techniques confirming second order kinetics and giving values for kinetic constants in excellent agreement. The coordination ability of 1 and 2 towards Cu 2 + in water has been studied by the Job's plot method. Spectroscopic data indicate that ligand 1 prevalently forms a 4:1 Ligand/Metal complex with a (N,O 3 ) coordination set on the equatorial plane of Cu 2 + , whereas ligand 2 , containing two amide functionalities bridged by a methylene group, appears able to form a 1:1 Ligand/Metal chelate species, again with a (N,O 3 ) donor set around copper.

Abstract

In higher plants, NAD(H)-glutamate dehydrogenase (GDH; EC 1.4.1.2) is an abundant enzyme that exists in different isoenzymic forms. In Arabidopsis thaliana, three genes (Gdh1, Gdh2 and Gdh3) encode three different GDH subunits (beta, alpha and gamma) that randomly associate to form a complex array of homo- and heterohexamers. The modification of the GDH isoenzyme pattern and its regulation was studied during the development of A. thaliana in the gdh1, gdh2 single mutants and the gdh1-2 double mutant, with particular emphasis on GDH3. Investigations showed that the GDH3 isoenzyme could not be detected in closely related Arabidopsis species. The induction and regulation of GDH3 activity in the leaves and roots was investigated following nitrogen deprivation in the presence or absence of sucrose or kinetin. Abstract

International audience; Non-destructive analysis of the artist’s palette of ancient wooden panel paintings is a difficult task and studies are rare. Here we compare different methods of analysis of a wooden panel painting, dated to the early sixteenth century, mainly by Raman and infrared spectroscopies. Raman spectra were recorded on collected/sampled micrometric fragments using portable Raman instruments with laser excitation lines at 532 and 785 nm and transportable Raman instruments at 532, 633 and 785 nm; a fixed 1064 nm Raman spectrometer was also used. Infrared analyses were performed in Attenuated Total Reflection (ATR-FTIR) mode. Using the portable instrument, the Raman spectra evidenced white lead, calcite and vermilion only. Raman spectra recorded by transportable and fixed instruments enabled the identification of most of the artist’s palette: (i) white lead, calcite, gypsum and cerussite for white colour; (ii) vermilion, red lead, litharge, haematite for red; (iii) azurite, indigo and lapis lazuli for blue. IR spectra gave information on the organic binding media. XRF analysis on a brown pigment suggested an heterogeneous mixture of a red pigment (such as haematite and/or minium) and a green one as malachite. GC-MS analysis allowed identifying terpenic resin in the composition of the outer protective layer.

Abstract

Axions currently provide the most compelling solution to the strong CP problem. These particles may be copiously produced in the early universe, including via thermal processes. Therefore, relic axions constitute a hot dark matter component and their masses are strongly degenerate with those of the three active neutrinos, as they leave identical signatures in the different cosmological observables. In addition, thermal axions, while still relativistic states, also contribute to the relativistic degrees of freedom, parameterised via $N_{eff}$. We present the cosmological bounds on the relic axion and neutrino masses, exploiting the full Planck mission data, which include polarization measurements. In the mixed hot dark matter scenario explored here, we find the tightest and more robust constraint to date on the sum of the three active neutrino masses, $\sum m_��, 5 pages, 1 figure

Abstract

Aesthetically appealing thrust systems and related large-scale anticlines, in both active and fossil foreland fold-and- thrust belts, and the economic potential associated with the m, have captured the interest of structural geologists for many decades. As a consequence, a large amount of data on sub -seismic deformation patterns from thrust-related an- ticlines is available in the literature. We provide a review of deformation pattern templates from fi eld data in foreland fold-and-thrust-belts and show that the most frequent tre nds of sub-seismic syn-orogenic deformation structures hosted in km-scale thrust-related folds frequently and pa radoxically indicate a syn-th rusting strike-slip stress fi eld con- fi guration, with a near-vertical σ 2 and a sub-horizontal σ 3 , rather than a contractional one where the latter is expected to be the vertical principal axis of the stress ellipsoid. This a pparent inconsistency between sub-seismic syn-orogenic deformation structures and stress fi eld orientation is here named “ the σ 2 paradox ” . Field data support a possible expla- nation of the paradox, provided by the major role played by i nherited early-orogenic extensional deformation struc- tures on thrust fault nucleation. Nucleation of major thru sts and their propagation is facilitated and driven by the positive inversion and linkage of the early-orogenic sub-s eismic extensional inheritance developed in the foreland basin. Abstract

International audience; A vast shallow epicontinental sea extended across Eurasia and was well-connected to the Western Tethys before it retreated westward and became isolated as the Paratethys Sea. However, the palaeogeography and the timing of this westward retreat are too poorly constrained to determine potential wider environmental impacts, let alone understanding underlying mechanisms of the retreat such as global eustasy and tectonism associated with the Indo-Asia collision. Here, an improved chronostratigraphic and palaeogeographic framework is provided for the onset of the proto-Paratethys Sea retreat at its easternmost extent in the Tarim Basin in western China is provided. Five different third-order sea-level cycles can be recognised from the Cretaceous-Palaeogene sedimentary record in the Tarim Basin, of which the last two stepped successively westwards as the sea retreated after the maximum third incursion. New biostratigraphic data from the fourth and fifth incursions at the westernmost margin of the Tarim Basin are compared to our recent integrated bio-magneto-stratigraphic results on the fourth incursion near the palaeodepocentre in the south-western part of the basin. While the fourth incursion extended throughout the basin and retreated at ~ 41 Ma (base C18r), the last and fifth incursion is restricted to the westernmost margin and its marine deposits are assigned a latest Bartonian-early Priabonian age from ~ 38.0 to ~ 36.7 Ma (near top C17n.2n to base C16n.2n). Similar to the fourth, the fossil assemblages of the fifth incursion are indicative of shallow marine, near-shore conditions and their widespread distribution across Eurasia suggests that the marine connection to the Western Tethys was maintained. The lack of diachronicity of the fourth incursion between the studied sections across the southwest Tarim Basin suggests that the sea entered and withdrew relatively rapidly, as can be expected in the case of eustatic control on a shallow epicontinental basin. However, the westward palaeogeographic step between the fourth and fifth incursions separated by several millions of years rather suggests the combined long-term effect of tectonism, possibly associated with early uplift of the Pamir-Kunlun Shan thrust belt. The fourth and fifth regressions are time-equivalent with significant aridification steps recorded in the Asian interior, thus supporting climate modelling results showing that the stepwise sea retreat from Central Asia amplified the aridification of the Asian interior.

Abstract

International audience; The first measurement of the helicity dependence of the total inclusive 3He photo-absorption cross section and of the partial cross sections for several reaction channels was carried out at MAMI (Mainz) in the photon energy range between 150 and 500 MeV. The experiment used the large acceptance Crystal Ball spectrometer, complemented by charged particle and vertex detectors, a circularly polarised tagged photon beam and a longitudinally polarised high-pressure 3He gas target. The results obtained give information on the GDH integral on 3He and on the neutron and allow an investigation of the modifications of nucleon properties inside 3He.

International audience; Efficiently reducing natural hazard risks requires a thorough understanding of the costs of natural hazards. Current methods to assess these costs employ a variety of terminologies and approaches for different types of natural hazards and different impacted sectors. This may impede efforts to ascertain comprehensive and comparable cost figures. In order to strengthen the role of cost assessments in the development of integrated natural hazard management, a review of existing cost assessment approaches was undertaken. This review considers droughts, floods, coastal and Alpine hazards, and examines different cost types, namely direct tangible damages, losses due to business interruption, indirect damages, intangible effects, and the costs of risk mitigation. This paper provides an overview of the state-of-the-art cost assessment approaches and discusses key knowledge gaps. It shows that the application of cost assessments in practice is often incomplete and biased, as direct costs receive a relatively large amount of attention, while intangible and indirect effects are rarely considered. Furthermore, all parts of cost assessment entail considerable uncertainties due to insufficient or highly aggregated data sources, along with a lack of knowledge about the processes leading to damage and thus the appropriate models required. Recommendations are provided on how to reduce or handle these uncertainties by improving data sources and cost assessment methods. Further recommendations address how risk dynamics due to climate and socio-economic change can be better considered, how costs are distributed and risks transferred, and in what ways cost assessment can function as part of decision support.

Abstract

We present the first measurement of nuclear recoils from solar ^{8}B neutrinos via coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering with the XENONnT dark matter experiment. The central detector of XENONnT is a low-background, two-phase time projection chamber with a 5.9 t sensitive liquid xenon target. A blind analysis with an exposure of 3.51  t×yr resulted in 37 observed events above 0.5 keV, with (26.4_{-1.3}^{+1.4}) events expected from backgrounds. The background-only hypothesis is rejected with a statistical significance of 2.73σ. The measured ^{8}B solar neutrino flux of (4.7_{-2.3}^{+3.6})×10^{6}  cm^{-2} s^{-1} is consistent with results from the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory. The measured neutrino flux-weighted CEνNS cross section on Xe of (1.1_{-0.5}^{+0.8})×10^{-39}  cm^{2} is consistent with the Standard Model prediction. This is the first direct measurement of nuclear recoils from solar neutrinos with a dark matter detector.

Abstract

The NA62 experiment at CERN, configured in beam-dump mode, has searched for dark photon decays in flight to electron-positron pairs using a sample of 1.4×10^{17} protons on dump collected in 2021. No evidence for a dark photon signal is observed. The combined result for dark photon searches in lepton-antilepton final states is presented and a region of the parameter space is excluded at 90% confidence level, improving on previous experimental limits for dark photon mass values between 50 and 600  MeV/c^{2} and coupling values in the range 10^{-6} to 4×10^{-5}. An interpretation of the e^{+}e^{-} search result in terms of the emission and decay of an axionlike particle is also presented.

38. CFTIlandslides, Italian database of historical earthquake-induced landslides.

Abstract

Knowing the location, the extent and the characteristics of any earthquake-induced environmental phenomenon is becoming an increasingly pressing need for civil protection agencies and local administrations. In particular, earthquake-triggered landslides are known for being among the most important sources of secondary hazard, as they may cause significant losses and may delay rescue operations across large areas. The combination of the relatively frequent seismic release with a very high landslide susceptibility makes the Italian territory especially prone to the occurrence of earthquake-induced landslides. The CFTIlandslides dataset features over 1,000 landslides triggered by historical Italian earthquakes (up to 1997). The landslides effects are subdivided into classes based on location accuracy and type of movement. Knowing the distribution of the past earthquake-induced landslides provides the input information for assessing the related hazard. This dataset is addressed to a large audience of potential users, including researchers and scholars, administrators and technicians belonging to local institutions, and civil protection authorities., (© 2024. 39. Oxygen rise in the tropical upper ocean during the Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum.

Abstract

The global ocean's oxygen inventory is declining in response to global warming, but the future of the low-oxygen tropics is uncertain. We report new evidence for tropical oxygenation during the Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM), a warming event that serves as a geologic analog to anthropogenic warming. Foraminifera-bound nitrogen isotopes indicate that the tropical North Pacific oxygen-deficient zone contracted during the PETM. A concomitant increase in foraminifera size implies that oxygen availability rose in the shallow subsurface throughout the tropical North Pacific. These changes are consistent with ocean model simulations of warming, in which a decline in biological productivity allows tropical subsurface oxygen to rise even as global ocean oxygen declines. The tropical oxygen increase may have helped avoid a mass extinction during the PETM.

40. Multifractality in spin glasses.

Abstract

We unveil the multifractal behavior of Ising spin glasses in their low-temperature phase. Using the Janus II custom-built supercomputer, the spin-glass correlation function is studied locally. Dramatic fluctuations are found when pairs of sites at the same distance are compared. The scaling of these fluctuations, as the spin-glass coherence length grows with time, is characterized through the computation of the singularity spectrum and its corresponding Legendre transform. A comparatively small number of site pairs controls the average correlation that governs the response to a magnetic field. We explain how this scenario of dramatic fluctuations (at length scales smaller than the coherence length) can be reconciled with the smooth, self-averaging behavior that has long been considered to describe spin-glass dynamics., Competing Interests: Competing interests statement:The authors declare no competing interest.

Abstract

The excited states of unstable ^{20}O were investigated via γ-ray spectroscopy following the ^{19}O(d,p)^{20}O reaction at 8  AMeV. By exploiting the Doppler shift attenuation method, the lifetimes of the 2_{2}^{+} and 3_{1}^{+} states were firmly established. From the γ-ray branching and E2/M1 mixing ratios for transitions deexciting the 2_{2}^{+} and 3_{1}^{+} states, the B(E2) and B(M1) were determined. Various chiral effective field theory Hamiltonians, describing the nuclear properties beyond ground states, along with a standard USDB interaction, were compared with the experimentally obtained data. Such a comparison for a large set of γ-ray transition probabilities with the valence space in medium similarity renormalization group ab initio calculations was performed for the first time in a nucleus far from stability. It was shown that the ab initio approaches using chiral effective field theory forces are challenged by detailed high-precision spectroscopic properties of nuclei. The reduced transition probabilities were found to be a very constraining test of the performance of the ab initio models.

Abstract

Purpose: We designed a prototype compact gamma camera (MediPROBE4) for nuclear medicine tasks, including radio-guided surgery and sentinel lymph node imaging with a 99m Tc radiotracer. We performed Monte Carlo (MC) simulations for image performance assessment, and first spectroscopic imaging tests with a 300 μm thick silicon detector., Methods: The hand-held camera (1 kg weight) is based on a Timepix4 readout circuit for photon-counting, energy-sensitive, hybrid pixel detectors (24.6 × 28.2 mm 2 sensitive area, 55 μm pixel pitch), developed by the Medipix4 Collaboration. The camera design adopts a CdTe detector (1 or 2 mm thick) bump-bonded to a Timepix4 readout chip and a coded aperture collimator with 0.25 mm diameter round holes made of 3D printed 1-mm thick tungsten. Image reconstruction is performed via autocorrelation deconvolution., Results: Geant4 MC simulations showed that, for a 99m Tc source in air, at 50 mm source-collimator distance, the estimated collimator sensitivity (4 × 10 -4 ) is 292 times larger than that of a single hole in the mask; the system sensitivity is 0.22 cps/kBq (2 mm CdTe); the lateral spatial resolution is 1.7 mm FWHM. The estimated axial longitudinal resolution is 8.2 mm FWHM at 40 mm distance. Abstract

Radio Pharmaceutical Therapy (RPT) comes forth as a promising technique to treat a wide range of tumors while ensuring low collateral damage to nearby healthy tissues. This kind of cancer therapy exploits the radiation following the decay of a specific radionuclide to deliver a lethal dose to tumor tissues. In the framework of the ISOLPHARM project of INFN, 111 Ag was recently proposed as a promising core of a therapeutic radiopharmaceutical. In this paper, the production of 111 Ag via neutron activation of 110 Pd-enriched samples inside a TRIGA Mark II nuclear research reactor is studied. The radioisotope production is modeled using two different Monte Carlo codes (MCNPX and PHITS) and a stand-alone inventory calculation code FISPACT-II, with different cross section data libraries. The whole process is simulated starting from an MCNP6-based reactor model producing the neutron spectrum and flux in the selected irradiation facility. Moreover, a cost-effective, robust and easy-to-use spectroscopic system, based on a Lanthanum Bromo-Chloride (LBC) inorganic scintillator, is designed and characterized, with the aim of using it, in the future, for the quality control of the ISOLPHARM irradiated targets at the SPES facility of the Legnaro National Laboratories of INFN. nat Pd and 110 Pd-enriched samples are irradiated in the reactor main irradiation facility and spectroscopically characterized using the LBC-based setup and a multiple-fit analysis procedure. Experimental results are compared with theoretical predictions of the developed models, showing that inaccuracies in the available cross section libraries prevent an accurate reproduction of the generated radioisotope activities. Abstract

Multiple viable theoretical models predict heavy dark matter particles with a mass close to the Planck mass, a range relatively unexplored by current experimental measurements. We use 219.4 days of data collected with the XENON1T experiment to conduct a blind search for signals from multiply interacting massive particles (MIMPs). Their unique track signature allows a targeted analysis with only 0.05 expected background events from muons. Following unblinding, we observe no signal candidate events. This Letter places strong constraints on spin-independent interactions of dark matter particles with a mass between 1×10^{12} and 2×10^{17}  GeV/c^{2}. In addition, we present the first exclusion limits on spin-dependent MIMP-neutron and MIMP-proton cross sections for dark matter particles with masses close to the Planck scale.

Abstract

In the first billion years after the Big Bang, sources of ultraviolet (UV) photons are believed to have ionized intergalactic hydrogen, rendering the Universe transparent to UV radiation. Galaxies brighter than the characteristic luminosity L* (refs.  1,2 ) do not provide enough ionizing photons to drive this cosmic reionization. Fainter galaxies are thought to dominate the photon budget; however, they are surrounded by neutral gas that prevents the escape of the Lyman-α photons, which has been the dominant way to identify them so far. JD1 was previously identified as a triply-imaged galaxy with a magnification factor of 13 provided by the foreground cluster Abell 2744 (ref. 3 ), and a photometric redshift of z ≈ 10. Here we report the spectroscopic confirmation of this very low luminosity (≈0.05 L*) galaxy at z = 9.79, observed 480 Myr after the Big Bang, by means of the identification of the Lyman break and redward continuum, as well as multiple ≳4σ emission lines, with the Near-InfraRed Spectrograph (NIRSpec) and Near-InfraRed Camera (NIRCam) instruments. The combination of the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) and gravitational lensing shows that this ultra-faint galaxy (M UV  = -17.35)-with a luminosity typical of the sources responsible for cosmic reionization-has a compact (≈150 pc) and complex morphology, low stellar mass (10 7.19  M ⊙ ) and subsolar (≈0.6 Z ⊙ ) gas-phase metallicity., (© 2023. 46. Physico-Mechanical Performances of Mortars Prepared with Sorted Earthquake Rubble: The Role of CDW Type and Contained Crystalline Phases.

Abstract

Construction and demolition waste (CDW) from earthquake rubbles was used here as recycled aggregates (RA) in cementitious binders. The materials were sorted in six groups: concrete (CO), natural stone (NS), tile (TI), brick (BR), perforated brick (PF) and roof tile (RT). The abundance (wt.%) of crystalline phases in each RA type was determined by X-ray Powder Diffraction (XRPD). Each group of RAs was used alone (100 wt.% of RA) and mixed with quartz-rich virgin aggregates (VA) to prepare 13 types of mortars (12 specimens per type): one reference mortar (RM) with only VA, six recycled aggregate mortars (RAM) and six recycled-plus-virgin aggregate mortars (RVAM). The physical and mechanical properties of aggregates and mortars reflect the type and abundance of crystalline phases in each CDW group. Recycled mortars rich in concrete, natural stones and tiles have better mechanical performance than mortars prepared with recycled bricks, perforated bricks and roof tiles. For each RA, RVAMs have superior mechanical characteristics than the corresponding RAM. Since the type and amount of phases contained in recycled aggregates strongly control the mechanical performance of new construction materials, they should be routinely quantified as reported here, in addition to other physical features (water absorption, density, etc.). The separation of heterogeneous CDW into homogeneous RA groups is necessary for the production of new construction materials with stable and predictable performances to ensure CDW recycling, especially in areas hit by major adverse events, where large amounts of still valuable materials could be used for reconstruction processes.

47. Quartz-bearing rhyolitic melts in the Earth's mantle.

Abstract

The occurrence of rhyolite melts in the mantle has been predicted by high pressure-high temperature experiments but never observed in nature. Here we report natural quartz-bearing rhyolitic melt inclusions and interstitial glass within peridotite xenoliths. The oxygen isotope composition of quartz crystals shows the unequivocal continental crustal derivation of these melts, which approximate the minimum composition in the quartz-albite-orthoclase system. Thermodynamic modelling suggests rhyolite was originated from partial melting of near-anhydrous garnet-bearing metapelites at temperatures ~1000 °C and interacted with peridotite at pressure ~1 GPa. Reaction of rhyolite with olivine converted lherzolite rocks into orthopyroxene-domains and orthopyroxene + plagioclase veins. The recognition of rhyolitic melts in the mantle provides direct evidence for element cycling through earth's reservoirs, accommodated by dehydration and melting of crustal material, brought into the mantle by subduction, chemically modifying the mantle source, and ultimately returning to surface by arc magmatism., (© 2022. Abstract

Purpose: This Technical Note validates previously published data about the dosimetry of the electron beams produced by a mobile accelerator dedicated for intraoperative radiation therapy (IORT). The evaluation of the directional response of a PTW microDiamond detector is presented together with a detailed analysis of the output factors (OFs) for bevelled applicators., Methods: The OFs of the 6, 8, 10 and 12 MeV electron beams produced by a light intraoperative accelerator (LIAC, SIT, Italy) were measured in a commercial water phantom using the microDiamond. A set of flat and bevelled applicators with sizes ranging from 4 to 10 cm was characterized. For bevelled applicators, a correction for the angular dependence of the microDiamond was calculated using a home-made spherical phantom. Correction factors were obtained through measurements performed rotating the accelerator treatment head at 0°, 15°, 30° and 45°., Results: For flat applicators, the average deviation between measured and simulated OFs was (-1.1 ± 0.7)%. The microDiamond showed a higher angular dependence for the 6 MeV beam (∼8% for angles up to 45°, range 92 % ÷ 100 %), while the variations for 8, 10 and 12 MeV beams were ∼ 4 % (range 97 % ÷ 101 %). 49. An energy-efficient in-memory computing architecture for survival data analysis based on resistive switching memories.

Abstract

One of the objectives fostered in medical science is the so-called precision medicine, which requires the analysis of a large amount of survival data from patients to deeply understand treatment options. Tools like machine learning (ML) and deep neural networks are becoming a de-facto standard. Nowadays, computing facilities based on the Von Neumann architecture are devoted to these tasks, yet rapidly hitting a bottleneck in performance and energy efficiency. The in-memory computing (IMC) architecture emerged as a revolutionary approach to overcome that issue. In this work, we propose an IMC architecture based on resistive switching memory (RRAM) crossbar arrays to provide a convenient primitive for matrix-vector multiplication in a single computational step. This opens massive performance improvement in the acceleration of a neural network that is frequently used in survival analysis of biomedical records, namely the DeepSurv. We explored how the synaptic weights mapping strategy and the programming algorithms developed to counter RRAM non-idealities expose a performance/energy trade-off. 50. New solid state laser system for SPES: Selective Production of Exotic Species project at Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro.

Abstract

The Selective Production of Exotic Species project is under construction at Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro-INFN. The aim of the collaboration is to produce highly pure Radioactive Ion Beams (RIBs) from fission fragments of a uranium carbide (UC x ) target activated by a cyclotron proton beam. In order to select a specific atomic species, the main tool to be applied is the resonant laser ionization technique. We have just completed the installation of a dedicated all solid state laser system whose elements are tunable to transitions of all the elements/isotopes of interest for the project. The new laser system is based on three Titanium:sapphire laser sources, independently pumped by three Nd:YLF pump lasers, and it can be coupled to two high harmonic generation (second harmonic generation, third harmonic generation, and fourth harmonic generation) setups. The power, wavelength, and position of the laser beams are continuously monitored and stabilized by using automated active systems to improve the beam production stability of RIBs. This paper presents the main features of the laser system and examples of application of a laser ion source, including a first demonstration of photoionization of stable silver, one of the most requested elements for RIB application.
