Abstract

With the water crisis affecting several countries, the use of innovative technologies and methods in irrigated agriculture is essential to increase water use efficiency. The use of magnetised water has been considered a possibility both for saving water resources and in increasing crop productivity and quality. Following this, the objective of the present study was to evaluate the growth and longevity of flower stems of ornamental sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.; Vincent's Choice) irrigated with different irrigation depths and water subjected to magnetic field treatment. The treatments consisted of five percentage of crop evapotranspiration (ETc) (20, 70, 100, 130, and 160% of ETc) and two types of irrigation water (magnetised water; and ordinary water). The following characteristics were evaluated: plant height, stem diameter, inflorescence diameter, fresh and dry masses of the leaves and stems, fresh and dry masses of the inflorescence, and post-harvest longevity of the flower stems. The growth and post-harvest longevity characteristics were not influenced by the water type. An increase in irrigation depth promoted an increase in all analysed parameters. Regarding the commercialisation patterns of cut flowers, depth equal to or greater than 0.7 ETc yielded the best classification of ornamental sunflower. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Increased anthropic activity in the environment leads to degradation and increased waste generation that includes tires, which can be used for the manufacture of porous pipes by extrusion for irrigation or aeration. There are no defined methodologies for the hydraulic characterization of porous pipes; in addition, their performance is questionable because the permeability of the wall in contact with water seems to decrease with time. Thus, this study aimed to perform the hydraulic characterization of porous pipes. Experiments were performed to assess the variation in permeability over time, the head loss, the friction factor, and the roughness. Statistical tests were performed to investigate possible significant differences between treatments. The results showed that the permeability varies over time and tends to decrease with each application of water. After a certain period, the permeability tends to become constant, and a stable flux can be determined, being the lowest average permeability and flux values found 0.591 x 10-15 m² 0.109 m³⋅m-2⋅s-1. There is variability in the permeability between pipe samples from the same batch as well as variability within the same sample, as indicated by the fact that some samples are similar to each other while others differ when performing a pairwise multiple comparison. Abstract

This study aimed to evaluate the influence of magnetized water use on lettuce irrigation management responses, and based on the generated data, to evaluate by simulation the influence of soil water retention curve type on the lettuce irrigation management responses. This work was divided into three stages: 1 -- determination of field and laboratory soil water retention curves; 2 -- lettuce crop irrigation management experiment using soil water retention curve with field data, evaluating different soil water tensions to start irrigation and different water types (magnetically treated water, and nontreated water); and 3 -- estimation of the irrigation management responses (simulation) using the soil water retention curve performed in the laboratory (using non-treated water), compared with the experimental results (stage 2). The use of magnetically treated water determined the soil moisture maintenance for a longer time and fewer irrigation events, leading to less water being applied and electricity consumption. The use of the soil water retention curve derived from the field data determined less water and electric energy consumption in Lucy Brown lettuce irrigation, in comparison with the simulated use of the soil water retention curve from laboratory data. Abstract

A área foliar possui correlação entre as atividades fotossintéticas e de transpirações das espécies vegetais, uma vez que esta reflete a capacidade da planta em interceptar as radiações e efetuar as trocas gasosas. Dessa forma, torna-se um importante indicativo da produtividade das culturas agrícolas. Tendo em vista a escassez de trabalhos sobre a estimativa da área foliar do abacaxizeiro, torna-se objetivo deste trabalho identificar equações para a determinação da área foliar do abacaxizeiro cv Vitória utilizando relações alométricas das plantas. Foram utilizadas 120 plantas de abacaxizeiro, coletadas aleatoriamente no momento da indução floral artificial, que ocorreu aos 270 dias após o plantio. Foram mensurados altura (h) e número de folhas (NF), comprimento (C) e largura (L) da folha "D" e o produto destas duas últimas variáveis (CxL). Os dados foram submetidos à análise de regressão e selecionou-se a equação que melhor se ajustou às correlações. A validação dos modelos utilizou 60 novas plantas, e os valores obtidos foram avaliados por meio do coeficiente de determinação (R²), correlação de Pearson (r), erro médio (EA), erro médio absoluto (ERA) e raiz do quadrado médio do erro (RQME). O modelo que utilizou o produto das dimensões lineares (AF=19,298*(CxL)-559,9*) mostrou-se o mais adequado para a estimativa da área foliar do abacaxizeiro, devido aos baixos erros encontrados, alta correlação e fácil mensuração. The plant leaf area has correlation between the photosynthesis activity and plant transpiration, once reflect the plant capacity to intercept the radiation. Therefore can be an important indicative of productivity in agricultural crops. Front of the scarcity of studies about pineapple leaf area, this study aimed identify equations to determine the pineapple leaf area (cv Vitoria) by alometric relationships. 120 pineapples plants were used and collected at the moment of flower induction, 270 days after transplanting. Height (h) and number of leaves (NF), length (C) and width (L) of "D" leaf were measured. The product of length and width (CxL) was considered as an additional variable. The data was analyzed with regression analysis and was chose the equation that presented the best correlation. The model validation used 60 new plants and the results was evaluated by coefficient of determination (R2), Pearson correlation (r), mean error (EA), absolute mean error (ERA) and the root mean square error (RQME). The product of length and width like variable (AF=19,298*(CXL)-559,9*) was the best to determine the leaf area in the pineapple, with low errors, high correlation and facility on the measurement.

31. Removal efficiency of pressurized sand filters during the filtration process

Abstract

This study aims to evaluate the filtration process of a commercial sand filter operating at different filtration rates and different sand particle sizes. The second objective is to carry out sand filter efficiency evaluations and compare the standard sand filter method and the proposed method. Removal efficiency was analyzed in three filtration cycles, and determined by two methodologies: counting of particles in water at the inlet and outlet of the filtration system (standard method) and in sand bed layers (proposed method). An experimental module composed of three identical commercial sand filters was used with different sand particle sizes (G1 – 0.55 mm of sand effective diameter, G2 – 0.77 mm and G3 – 1.04 mm) and filtration rate combinations (20, 40, 60, and 75 m3m–2h–1), repeated for three filtration cycles (C1, C2 and C3), 4 h per cycle. The removal efficiency of sand filters increases as the filtration rate increases for the water quality used, and sand particle size decreases. Between the methodologies applied to evaluate filtration systems, the method using total suspended solids retained in sand (proposed method) has shown a greater potential when compared with the standard method. The evaluation methodology proposed provides a global and accurate evaluation of the process. This form of estimation does not have the representability problem punctual water samples collected during filtration have. In addition, it is a promising methodology for farmers and technicians to carry out equipment evaluations in the field.

Abstract

Sustainable soil management to optimize water use and enhance nutrient uptake is a promising approach for decreasing the incidence of coffee leaf rust. This work analysed soil coverings, fertilizers and soil conditioners to optimize water usage and nutrients in coffee rust management. The experiment was set up in the field in January 2016, with seedlings of Coffea arabica ‘Mundo Novo IAC – 379‐19’, susceptible to rust. The experimental design was in randomized blocks with three replications and arranged in a 3 × 2 × 5 factorial scheme. We assessed the combination of three soil coverings (plastic film, Urochloa decumbens and bare soil), two fertilizer types (conventional and controlled release) and five soil conditioners (organic compound, coffee husk, agricultural gypsum, water‐retaining polymer and control without soil conditioner). The rust incidence and foliage progress curve were integrated into the area under the rust incidence or foliage progress curve. Additionally, we assessed the leaf area index and coffee yield. The association of U. decumbens with controlled‐release fertilizers and organic compound or coffee husk increased coffee foliage and yield despite higher disease incidence. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Jatropha (Jatropha curcas L.) is an oil seed species, adaptive to different climate and soil conditions. It is known due to its high-oil-content seed, being an option for biodiesel production and presenting competitive yields under irrigated condition. This study was developed in an experimental area located in a humid subtropical region of Brazil and the objective was to evaluate Jatropha's energy balance under irrigation and rainfed condition during the first four years of its cycle. The input and output energy values were determined by multiplying the material amount by the related energy conversion factors. These values were used to determine the energy indices: energy balance (EB), and energy return on investment (EROI) for both conditions. Fertilizers had the highest contribution on energy input (42.58 GJ ha-1, 37.7% in irrigated area and 45.9% in rainfed area) followed by fuel consumption (32.96 GJ ha-1, 29.8% in irrigated area and 35.5% in rainfed area). Total energy input for the second, third and fourth years in the irrigated area was 114.58 GJ ha-1 (which 19.3% was due to the irrigation) and 92.51 GJ ha-1 in rainfed area. The output energy flows were 73.78 and 47.88 GJ ha-1 for irrigated and rainfed areas, respectively. In this study, negative value for EB and unviable EROI (<1) were obtained. However, EROI showed evolution when evaluated year-by-year, reaching values above 1 in the 4th year for both systems, as expected from perennial crops. Considering just the period evaluated, this crop was not sustainable for energy production, but this is a long lifespan crop and for the following years it is expected yield levels like the last one and values positive of energy balance.
