Objective: The loss of the dental coronal portion following carious lesions or fractures leads to endodontic treatment with subsequent restoration to ensure correct anatomy and function. Recently, partial adhesive restorations have been widely proposed to increase the survival rate of endodontically treated teeth. The primary purpose of this review is to assess the failure rate of indirect partial adhesive restorations on endodontically treated teeth (ETT), considering the follow-up period., Methods: The indications reported in the PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis) were used to draft the present review. The study was constructed on PICO questions: population (patients who need indirect adhesive restorative treatment on endodontically treated teeth with onlay and overlay), intervention (onlay and overlay), control (patients with onlay and overlay on endodontically treated teeth) and outcome (failure rate and types of failure for onlay and overlay). The asked scientific question was: what are the failure rate and types of failure for adhesive indirect partial restorations on ETT?, Results: The overall failure rate that emerges is 0.087 with a ratio of 121/1254, I 2 80 % p-value< 0.001. Moreover, by meta-regression with covariates the follow-up period reports a coefficient of 0.013 with a P-value< 0.001. In conclusion, the indirect partial restorations on endodontically treated teeth displayed overall acceptable outcomes in terms of success from 2 to 4 years after their placement with only 4.32 % of failure. Failures increase after 7 years up to 12-30 years with failure rates of approximatively 10.65 % and 20.94 %. The analysis of the included articles reporting the causes of restorations failures showed that 15.51 % of cases were related to the loss of dental element., Significance: Besides the survival rates of indirect adhesive restorations on endodontically treated posterior teeth, it was highlighted that the majority of failures appeared restorable. Background: Nodular histotype represents the condition that is mostly associated with diagnosis of thick melanoma., Objective: The objectives were to evaluate variables associated with and pattern of detection of nodular melanomas and to investigate variables associated with early diagnosis in accordance with histotype (nodular vs. superficial spreading melanomas)., Methods: From the original data set of 816 melanomas, all the invasive lesions classified as superficial spreading (n=500) and nodular (n=93) melanomas were considered for the study. A multivariate logistic analysis was performed. Results. Nodular melanomas did not significantly differ from superficial spreading melanomas regarding sex, anatomic site, number of whole-body nevi, and the presence of atypical nevi. As expected, nodular melanomas were represented by a higher percentage of thick (>2 mm) lesions compared to superficial spreading melanomas (64.5% vs. 9.6%, p<0.001). The pattern of detection significantly differed between nodular and superficial spreading melanomas, the former being more frequently self-detected (44.1% vs. 38.0%) or detected by the family doctor (34.4% vs. 11.4%). Female sex, high level of education, and detection made by a dermatologist had an independent, protective effect against late (>1 mm in thickness) diagnosis in superficial spreading melanomas. No protective variable associated with nodular melanomas was found., Conclusion: Patterns of detection for nodular melanomas significantly differ from those for superficial spreading melanomas. For superficial spreading, but not for nodular, melanomas, variables associated with protective effect against late diagnosis can be identified.

Objective: To investigate patterns of detection and variables associated with early diagnosis of melanoma in a population at intermediate melanoma risk., Design: Survey., Setting: Hospital and university centers belonging to the Italian Multidisciplinary Group on Melanoma., Patients: Eight hundred sixteen patients who were consecutively diagnosed as having melanoma and treated at 11 participating centers., Main Outcome Measure: Relationship between patterns of detection and patient's and physician's delay with melanoma thickness, assessed by multivariate analysis., Results: A statistically significant association with early diagnosis was found for female sex (odds ratio [OR] for a lesion >1 mm in thickness, 0.70; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.50-0.97), higher educational level (OR, 0.44; 95% CI, 0.24-0.79), residence in northern and central Italy (compared with southern Italy) (OR, 0.44; 95% CI, 0.30-0.65 and OR, 0.24; 95% CI, 0.15-0.37, respectively), and the habit of performing a skin self-examination (OR, 0.65; 95% CI, 0.45-0.93). When adjusted for all the previously mentioned variables, only melanoma detection made by a dermatologist, maybe incidentally, was associated with a statistically significant additional effect on early diagnosis (OR, 0.45; 95% CI, 0.28-0.73). No significant effect of anatomical site (trunk compared with other sites: OR, 0.83; 95% CI, 0.59-1.17), presence of atypical nevi (OR, 0.78; 95% CI, 0.52-1.17), and patient's delay (>3 months compared with < or =3 months: OR, 1.12; 95% CI, 0.78-1.60) was found., Conclusion: Future melanoma early diagnosis strategies should adequately stress the role of skin self-examination among the adult population, and should recommend that dermatologists perform a total skin examination to identify suspect lesions (such an examination should also be performed during consultations for other reasons).

On the basis of previous experiences and of international literature data the authors emphasize the importance of making a "targeted" choice of the topical disinfectant in the therapy of burn wound infections. The objective of the investigation is to reach the highest rate of take of the autologous keratinocyte cultures in burn wounds.

Skin allografts were done in rabbits previously immunized with sheep red blood cells at 1-10 day intervals. Results showed that mean allograft survival was not delayed, nor was accelerated rejection observed. It is concluded that antigenic competition between sheep erythrocytes and skin allografts does not exist.

Considering the immunodepressive properties of aprotinine, the influence of this protease inhibitor on the induction of methylcholanthrene sarcoma in rats has been investigated. The results of the investigation showed that aprotinine failed to modify the experimental tumour induction process. This observation provides further confirmation that immunodepression is not a position to favour the growth of a tumour as a result of chemically induced oncogenesis.

The influence of aprotinin on the taking of MCA-induced sarcoma in the rat was examined. Local application resulted in involution of the tumour in animals in which the syngeneic graft tended to grow. Histological investigation showed that this biological reaction was due to marked activation of the macrophages.

Antigenic competition was investigated in rabbits submitted to typhoid vaccine and skin allografts. While skin allografts were normally rejected, serum agglutinin responses to typhoid H and O antigens were lower than those of animals stimulated with thyphoid vaccine alone. It is concluded that the immune response to skin allograft resulted in antigenic competition for typhoid antigens.

Increased levels of circulating immune-complexes were found in rabbits immunized by allogeneic skin graft or sheep erythrocytes. This result was more marked in rabbits submitted to both experimental procedures. This finding suggested that the phenomenon was conditioned by a major efficiency of immune response.
