1. On the S-stars' Zone of Avoidance in the Galactic Center

Abstract

This paper investigates the origin and orbital evolution of S-stars in the Galactic Center using models of binary disruption and relaxation processes. We focus on explaining the recently discovered "zone of avoidance" in S-star orbital parameters, defined as a region where no S-stars are observed with pericenters $\log(r_p / {\rm AU}) \leq 1.57 + 2.6(1 - e)$ pc. We demonstrate that the observed S-star orbital distributions, including this zone of avoidance and their thermal eccentricity distribution, can be largely explained by continuous disruption of binaries near the central supermassive black hole, followed by orbital relaxation. Our models consider binaries originating from large scales (5--100 pc) and incorporate empirical distributions of binary properties. We simulate close encounters between binaries and the black hole, tracking the remnant stars' orbits. The initially highly eccentric orbits of disrupted binary remnants evolve due to non-resonant and resonant relaxation in the Galactic Center potential. While our results provide insights into the formation mechanism of S-stars, there are limitations, such as uncertainties in the initial binary population and mass-function and simplifications in our relaxation models. Abstract

We resolve the multiple images of the binary-lens microlensing event ASASSN-22av using the GRAVITY instrument of the Very Large Telescope Interferometer (VLTI). The light curves show weak binary-lens perturbations, complicating the analysis, but the joint modeling with the VLTI data breaks several degeneracies, arriving at a strongly favored solution. Thanks to precise measurements of angular Einstein radius \theta_E = 0.724 +/- 0.002 mas and microlens parallax, we determine that the lens system consists of two M dwarfs with masses of M_1 = 0.258 +/- 0.008 M_sun and M_2 = 0.130 +/- 0.007 M_sun, a projected separation of r_\perp = 6.83 +/- 0.31 au and a distance of D_L = 2.29 +/- 0.08 kpc. The successful VLTI observations of ASASSN-22av open up a new path for studying intermediate-separation (i.e., a few astronomical units) stellar-mass binaries, including those containing dark compact objects such as neutron stars and stellar-mass black holes., Comment: Published in ApJ. Abstract

Studying the orbital motion of stars around Sagittarius A* in the Galactic Center provides a unique opportunity to probe the gravitational potential near the supermassive black hole at the heart of our Galaxy. Interferometric data obtained with the GRAVITY instrument at the Very Large Telescope Interferometer (VLTI) since 2016 has allowed us to achieve unprecedented precision in tracking the orbits of these stars. GRAVITY data have been key to detecting the in-plane, prograde Schwarzschild precession of the orbit of the star S2, as predicted by General Relativity. By combining astrometric and spectroscopic data from multiple stars, including S2, S29, S38, and S55 - for which we have data around their time of pericenter passage with GRAVITY - we can now strengthen the significance of this detection to an approximately $10 \sigma$ confidence level. The prograde precession of S2's orbit provides valuable insights into the potential presence of an extended mass distribution surrounding Sagittarius A*, which could consist of a dynamically relaxed stellar cusp comprised of old stars and stellar remnants, along with a possible dark matter spike. Our analysis, based on two plausible density profiles - a power-law and a Plummer profile - constrains the enclosed mass within the orbit of S2 to be consistent with zero, establishing an upper limit of approximately $1200 \, M_\odot$ with a $1 \sigma$ confidence level. This significantly improves our constraints on the mass distribution in the Galactic Center. Our upper limit is very close to the expected value from numerical simulations for a stellar cusp in the Galactic Center, leaving little room for a significant enhancement of dark matter density near Sagittarius A*., Comment: Submitted to A&A on September 17, 2024

Abstract

A systematic study, based on the third-moment structure function, of Sgr A*'s variability finds an exponential rise time $\tau_{1,\rm{obs}}=14.8^{+0.4}_{-1.5}~\mathrm{minutes}$ and decay time $\tau_{2,\rm{obs}}=13.1^{+1.3}_{-1.4}~\mathrm{minutes}$. This symmetry of the flux-density variability is consistent with earlier work, and we interpret it as caused by the dominance of Doppler boosting, as opposed to gravitational lensing, in Sgr~A*'s light curve. A relativistic, semi-physical model of Sgr~A* confirms an inclination angle $i<45$ degrees. The model also shows that the emission of the intrinsic radiative process can have some asymmetry even though the observed emission does not. The third-moment structure function, which is a measure of the skewness of the light-curve increments, may be a useful summary statistic in other contexts of astronomy because it senses only temporal asymmetry, i.e., it averages to zero for any temporally symmetric signal., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A letters

Abstract

We consider constrained-degree percolation model on the hypercubic lattice \linebreak $\mathbb{L}^d=(\mathbb{Z}^d,\mathbb{E}^d)$. In this model, there exits a sequence $(U_e)_{e\in\mathbb{E}^d}$ of i.i.d. random variables with distribution $Unif([0,1])$ and a positive integer $k$, which is called a constraint. Each edge $e$ attempts to open at time $U_e$, and the attempt is successful if the number of neighboring edges open at each endvertex of $e$ is at most $k-1$. In \cite{hartarsky2022weakly}, the authors demonstrated that this model undergoes a phase transition when $d\geq3$ and for most nontrivial values of $k$. Abstract

The development of spin-orbitronic devices, such as magneto-electric spin-orbit logic devices, calls for materials with a high resistivity and a high spin-charge interconversion efficiency. One of the most promising candidates in this regard is sputtered Bi$_x$Se$_{1-x}$. Although there are several techniques to quantify spin-charge interconversion, to date reported values for sputtered Bi$_x$Se$_{1-x}$ have often been overestimated due to spurious effects related to local currents combined with a lack of understanding of the effect of the interfaces and the use of approximations for unknown parameters, such as the spin diffusion length. In the present study, non-local spin valves are used to inject pure spin currents into Bi$_x$Se$_{1-x}$, allowing us to directly obtain its spin diffusion length as well as its spin Hall angle, from 10 K up to 300 K. These values, which are more accurate than those previously reported in sputtered Bi$_x$Se$_{1-x}$, evidence that the efficiency of this material is not exceptional. Indeed, the figure of merit for spin-charge interconversion, given by the product of these two parameters, is slightly under 1 nm. We investigate a modified version of the $AB$ random sequential adsorption model. Specifically, this model involves the deposition of two distinct types of particles onto a lattice, with the constraint that different types cannot occupy neighboring sites. By restricting the deposition attempts to only one per site, we derive an analytical expression for the average densities of particles of types $A$ and $B$, at all time instances, for all deposition probabilities of each particle type.

Abstract

Abstract Leaf litter is an important component related to nutrient cycling and conservation of soil biodiversity. In this context, the objective of our study was to investigate the relationship between soil and leaf litter in different forest communities in sub-regions of the Pantanal (Nhecolândia and Abobral/Miranda). To this end, we collected soil and leaf litter samples from 152 sample plots divided in physiognomies regionally called as Cordilheira, Capão, Murundu, Corixo and Cambará/Canjiqueira forest. In the laboratory, analytical determinations were conducted for 22 soil attributes and 11 elements of the chemical composition of the leaf litter. The forest communities showed a great well-defined edaphic gradient encompassing environments with high natural fertility soils (Capão and Cordilheira Abobral/Miranda), acidic soils with a high proportion of soluble Al3+ (Cambará/Canjiqueira, and Corixo), and poorly developed soils with a predominantly sandy texture (Nhecolândia region, Cordilheira and Murundu). Soil attributes are significantly related to the chemical composition of litter, as indicated by correlations between N, P, Ca, Mg, Mn and the C/N ratio with physical, chemical and soil organic matter attributes. This study revealed the interaction of soils with the chemical composition of litter, constituting an ecosystem service, in forest communities in the Brazilian Pantanal.

Abstract

Spin-orbitronic devices can integrate memory and logic by exploiting spin-charge interconversion (SCI), which is optimized by design and materials selection. In these devices, such as the magnetoelectric spin-orbit (MESO) logic, interfaces are crucial elements as they can prohibit or promote spin flow in a device as well as possess spin-orbit coupling resulting in interfacial SCI. Here, we study the origin of SCI in a Py/Cu/W lateral spin valve and quantify its efficiency. An exhaustive characterization of the interface between Cu and W electrodes uncovers the presence of an oxidized layer (WO$_x$). We determine that the SCI occurs at the Cu/WO$_x$ interface with a temperature-independent interfacial spin-loss conductance of $G_{||} \approx$ 20 $\times$ 10$^{13} \Omega^{-1}m^{-2}$ and an interfacial spin-charge conductivity $\sigma_{SC}=-$1610 $\Omega^{-1}cm^{-1}$ at 10 K ($-$830 $\Omega^{-1}cm^{-1}$ at 300 K). This corresponds to an efficiency given by the inverse Edelstein length $\lambda_{IEE}=-$0.76 nm at 10 K ($-$0.4 nm at 300 K), which is remarkably larger than in metal/metal and metal/oxide interfaces and bulk heavy metals. Abstract

Here, a comprehensive cytogenetic analysis of three species of tenebrionid beetles: Alphitobius diaperinus, Tenebrio molitor and Zophobas morio, is presented. This paper also contains a review of the cytogenetic information for each species and adds new data. The male karyotype of both T. molitor and Z. morio is 2n = 18 + Xyp, with large heterochromatic blocks in the pericentromeric regions of all chromosomes. The male A. diaperinus karyotype is 2n = 18 + X0, also with heterochromatic pericentromeric regions in all chromosomes. The location of the nucleolar organizer regions (NORs) differs in each species: in A. diaperinus, it is located on the smallest pair of autosomes, while in T. molitor, it is on two pairs of autosomes and both sex chromosomes. In contrast, it is exclusively located on the X chromosome in Z. morio. Telomere analysis revealed that all species have TCAGG repeats in their telomeres, but lack the canonical TTAGG insect telomeric motif. In addition, a study of the distribution of satellite DNA and composition revealed that each species has a main satellite DNA family forming the pericentromeric heterochromatin. Fluorescence in situ hybridization of each of these satellites did not produce hybridization signal in the other two species, indicating a divergence in repetitive DNA composition among them. This study adds to the understanding of chromosomal organization, heterochromatin distribution and repetitive DNA dynamics in tenebrionid beetles and sheds light on their cytogenetic diversity and evolutionary significance.

Abstract

Background and Purpose Posterior cerebral artery occlusion (PCAo) can cause long-term disability, yet randomized controlled trials to guide optimal reperfusion strategy are lacking. We compared the outcomes of PCAo patients treated with endovascular thrombectomy (EVT) with or without intravenous thrombolysis (IVT) to patients treated with IVT alone. Methods From the multicenter retrospective Posterior cerebraL ArTery Occlusion (PLATO) registry, we included patients with isolated PCAo treated with reperfusion therapy within 24 hours of onset between January 2015 and August 2022. The primary outcome was the distribution of the modified Rankin Scale (mRS) at 3 months. Other outcomes comprised 3-month excellent (mRS 0–1) and independent outcome (mRS 0–2), early neurological improvement (ENI), mortality, and symptomatic intracranial hemorrhage (sICH). The treatments were compared using inverse probability weighted regression adjustment. Results Among 724 patients, 400 received EVT+/-IVT and 324 IVT alone (median age 74 years, 57.7% men). The median National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale score on admission was 7, and the occluded segment was P1 (43.9%), P2 (48.3%), P3–P4 (6.1%), bilateral (1.0%), or fetal posterior cerebral artery (0.7%). Compared to IVT alone, EVT+/-IVT was not associated with improved functional outcome (adjusted common odds ratio [OR] 1.07, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.79–1.43). EVT increased the odds for ENI (adjusted OR [aOR] 1.49, 95% CI 1.05–2.12), sICH (aOR 2.87, 95% CI 1.23–6.72), and mortality (aOR 1.77, 95% CI 1.07–2.95). Conclusion Despite higher odds for early improvement, EVT+/-IVT did not affect functional outcome compared to IVT alone after PCAo. This may be driven by the increased risk of sICH and mortality after EVT.

Abstract

Background and Purpose We compared the outcomes of endovascular therapy (EVT) in an extended time window in patients with large-vessel occlusion (LVO) between patients with and without pre-stroke disability. Methods In this prespecified analysis of the multinational CT for Late Endovascular Reperfusion study (66 participating sites, 10 countries between 2014 and 2022), we analyzed data from patients with acute ischemic stroke with a pre-stroke modified Rankin Scale (mRS) score of 0–4 and LVO who underwent EVT 6–24 hours from the time last seen well. The primary outcome was the composite of functional independence (FI; mRS score 0–2) or return to the pre-stroke mRS score (return of Rankin, RoR) at 90 days. Outcomes were compared between patients with pre-stroke disability (pre-stroke mRS score 2–4) and those without (mRS score 0–1). Results A total of 2,231 patients (median age, 72 years; median National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale score, 16) were included in the present analysis. Of these, 564 (25%) had pre-stroke disability. Abstract

Distal medium vessel occlusions (DMVOs) are thought to cause as many as 25% to 40% of all acute ischemic strokes and may result in substantial disability amongst survivors. Although intravenous thrombolysis (IVT) is more effective for distal than proximal vessel occlusions, the overall efficacy of IVT remains limited in DMVO with less than 50% of patients achieving reperfusion and about 1/3 to 1/4 of the patients failing to achieve functional independence. Data regarding mechanical thrombectomy (MT) among these patients remains limited. The smaller, thinner, and more tortuous vessels involved in DMVO are presumably associated with higher procedural risks whereas a lower benefit might be expected given the smaller amount of tissue territory at risk. Recent advances in technology have shown promising results in endovascular treatment of DMVOs with room for future improvement. In this review, we discuss some of the key technical and clinical considerations in DMVO treatment including the anatomical and clinical terminology, diagnostic modalities, the role of IVT and MT, existing technology, and technical challenges as well as the contemporary evidence and future treatment directions.

Abstract

One of the major obstacles to realizing spintronic devices such as MESO logic devices is the small signal magnitude used for magnetization readout, making it important to find materials with high spin-to-charge conversion efficiency. Although intermixing at the junction of two materials is a widely occurring phenomenon, its influence on material characterization and the estimation of spin-to-charge conversion efficiencies is easily neglected or underestimated. Here, we demonstrate all electrical spin-to-charge conversion in Bi$_x$Se$_{1-x}$ nanodevices and show how the conversion efficiency can be overestimated by tens of times depending on the adjacent metal used as a contact. We attribute this to the intermixing-induced compositional change and the properties of a polycrystal that lead to drastic changes in resistivity and spin Hall angle. Abstract

We consider a random sequential adsorption process on the one-dimensional lattice with nearest-neighbor exclusion. In this model, each site $s \in \mathbb{Z}$ starts empty and we will try to occupy it in time $t_s$, where $(t_s)_{s\in\mathbb{Z}}$ is a sequence of independent random variables uniformly distributed on the interval $[0,1]$. The site will be occupied if both of its neighbors are vacant. We provide a method to calculate the density of occupied sites up to the time $t$, as well as the pair correlation function.

We present a method for post-processing point clouds' geometric information by applying a previously proposed fractional super-resolution technique to clouds compressed and decoded with MPEG's G-PCC codec. In some sense, this is a continuation of that previous work, which requires only a down-scaled point cloud and a scaling factor, both of which are provided by the G-PCC codec. For non-solid point clouds, an a priori down-scaling is required for improved efficiency. The method is compared to the GPCC itself, as well as machine-learning-based techniques. Abstract

ABSTRACT The limited temporal completeness and taxonomic accuracy of species lists, made available in a traditional manner in scientific publications, has always represented a problem. These lists are invariably limited to a few taxonomic groups and do not represent up-to-date knowledge of all species and classifications. In this context, the Brazilian megadiverse fauna is no exception, and the Catálogo Taxonômico da Fauna do Brasil (CTFB) (http://fauna.jbrj.gov.br/), made public in 2015, represents a database on biodiversity anchored on a list of valid and expertly recognized scientific names of animals in Brazil. The CTFB is updated in near real time by a team of more than 800 specialists. By January 1, 2024, the CTFB compiled 133,691 nominal species, with 125,138 that were considered valid. Most of the valid species were arthropods (82.3%, with more than 102,000 species) and chordates (7.69%, with over 11,000 species). These taxa were followed by a cluster composed of Mollusca (3,567 species), Platyhelminthes (2,292 species), Annelida (1,833 species), and Nematoda (1,447 species). All remaining groups had less than 1,000 species reported in Brazil, with Cnidaria (831 species), Porifera (628 species), Rotifera (606 species), and Bryozoa (520 species) representing those with more than 500 species. Analysis of the CTFB database can facilitate and direct efforts towards the discovery of new species in Brazil, but it is also fundamental in providing the best available list of valid nominal species to users, including those in science, health, conservation efforts, and any initiative involving animals. The importance of the CTFB is evidenced by the elevated number of citations in the scientific literature in diverse areas of biology, law, anthropology, education, forensic science, and veterinary science, among others.

Abstract

Rotating axisymmetric objects amplify incoming waves by superradiant scattering. When enclosed in a cavity, the repeated interaction of a confined field with the object may trigger superradiant instabilities. Rotating binaries are ubiquitous in physics, and play a fundamental role in astrophysics and in everyday life instruments. Such binaries may be prone to superradiant phenomena as well, but their inherent complexity makes it challenging to study how exactly such instabilities can be triggered. Here, we study a binary of two absorbing objects (mimicking black hole binaries, blades of an helicopter, etc) revolving around a common center, and show that superradiant instabilities do occur, on expected timescales and frequency range. Our results provide the first demonstration that superradiance also occurs for highly asymmetric systems, and may have a wealth of applications in fluid dynamics and astrophysics. Extrapolating to astrophysical black holes, our findings indicate that compact binaries may be used as interesting particle detectors, depositing a fraction of their energy into putative new fundamental ultralight degrees of freedom., Comment: 15 pages, 15 figures

Abstract

Chiral materials are the ideal playground for exploring the relation between symmetry, relativistic effects, and electronic transport. For instance, chiral organic molecules have been intensively studied to electrically generate spin-polarized currents in the last decade, but their poor electronic conductivity limits their potential for applications. Conversely, chiral inorganic materials such as Tellurium are excellent electrical transport materials, but have not been explored to enable the electrical control of spin polarization in devices. Here, we demonstrate the all-electrical generation, manipulation, and detection of spin polarization in chiral single-crystalline Tellurium nanowires. By recording a large (up to 7%) and chirality-dependent unidirectional magnetoresistance, we show that the orientation of the electrically generated spin polarization is determined by the nanowire handedness and uniquely follows the current direction, while its magnitude can be manipulated by an electrostatic gate. Our results pave the way for the development of magnet-free chirality-based spintronic devices.

Abstract

We consider the Constrained-degree percolation model in random environment (CDPRE) on the square lattice. In this model, each vertex $v$ has an independent random constraint $\kappa_v$ which takes the value $j\in \{0,1,2,3\}$ with probability $\rho_j$. The dynamics is as follows: at time $t=0$ all edges are closed; each edge $e$ attempts to open at a random time $U_e\sim \mathrm{U}(0,1]$, independently of all other edges. It succeeds if at time $U_e$ both its end-vertices have degrees strictly smaller than their respective constraints. We obtain exponential decay of the radius of the open cluster of the origin at all times when its expected size is finite. Since CDPRE is dominated by Bernoulli percolation, such result is meaningful only if the supremum of all values of $t$ for which the expected size of the open cluster of the origin is finite is larger than 1/2. Abstract

Background Rapid expansion of mechanical thrombectomy and swift manufacturing development has translated into significant evolution of large‐bore catheter technology. The objective of this study was to evaluate the association among diverse structural components of large‐bore aspiration catheters on procedural performance. Methods Retrospective analysis of a prospectively maintained mechanical thrombectomy consortium (SVIN [Society of Vascular Interventional Neurology] Registry) treated with stand‐alone contact aspiration for the first pass in the middle cerebral artery M1 or intracranial internal carotid artery occlusions from 2012 to 2021. Catheters were stratified on the basis of construction materials, tip technology, catheter sizing, and catheter lining. Factors associated with first‐pass effect (first‐pass eTICI 2c–3 reperfusion) as well as speed of clot engagement were analyzed. Results We identified 983 patients with proximal occlusion and aspiration as the first‐pass technique. First‐pass effect was observed in 34% and associated with age (odds ratio [OR], 1.02 [95% CI, 1.01–1.03]), cardioembolic stroke pathogenesis (OR, 1.69 [95% CI, 1.77–2.41]), middle cerebral artery M1 (OR, 2.74 [95% CI, 1.09–1.87]), nongeneral anesthesia (OR, 0.55 [95% CI, 0.39–0.767]), as well as with 0.070‐inch (OR, 2.04 95% CI, 1.01–3.78]), and 0.088‐inch (OR, 3.90 [95% CI, 1.58–9.61]) distal catheter inner diameter in the adjusted analysis. Mean time from arterial access to clot contact was 17 minutes, with faster times observed in younger patients (OR, 0.99 [95% CI, 0.98–0.996]) as well as with the use of aspiration catheters with shorter length of distal outer hydrophilic coating (18–30 cm) on multivariable regression (OR, 0.30 [95% CI, 0.11–0.82]). Conclusion Larger aspiration catheter distal inner diameter was associated with higher rates of first‐pass effect. Aspiration catheter construction components were found to influence times from arterial access to clot contact.

Abstract

Background PP‐007 is a polyethylene glycol (PEG)ylated bovine carboxyhemoglobin gas transfer molecule with pleotropic cytoprotective effects, vasodilatation, plasma expansion, and optimization of oxygen delivery. Rodent middle cerebral artery occlusion models have demonstrated that PP‐007 increases blood flow in the collateral circulation and reduces final infarct volumes, supporting a potential role as neuroprotective agent in acute ischemic stroke. We aim to evaluate the safety and feasibility of PP‐007 as an adjunctive treatment to mechanical thrombectomy (MT) in patients with stroke secondary to large vessel occlusion. Methods HEMERA‐1 (CarboxyHEMoglobin OxygEn delivery for Revascularization in Acute Stroke) was a multicenter, prospective, randomized, controlled phase 1 clinical trial. Anterior circulation large vessel occlusion patients were assigned in a 3:1 ratio to receive either PP‐007 (320 mg/kg: 30 min bolus followed by 2‐h infusion) plus MT or MT alone within 24 hours after symptom onset. Comprehensive safety evaluation was performed by independent Data Monitoring Safety Board and Imaging Core Lab. Results From October 1, 2021 to June 30, 2022, a total of 17 patients were recruited. Age, baseline National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale score, and Alberta Stroke Program Early CT Score were 74.8±12.7 years, 17.3±4.2, and 7.9±1.8, respectively. Twelve patients were randomized to PP‐007 plus MT, 1 was randomized but not treated, 4 patients were randomized to MT alone. Recanalization of the occluded vessel was achieved in all patients. A transient systolic blood pressure increase (20–40 mm Hg) during the bolus was observed in all PP‐007 patients without any clinical consequences. There were no other safety concerns. Conclusion No significant safety concerns were identified for the adjunctive use of PP‐007 in patients undergoing MT. (The study was funded by Prolong Pharmaceuticals. Abstract

Background With the expanding eligibility for endovascular therapy (EVT) of patients presenting in the late window (6–24 hours after last known well), we aimed to derive a score to predict favorable outcomes associated with EVT versus best medical management. Methods and Results A multinational observational cohort of patients from the CLEAR (Computed Tomography for Late Endovascular Reperfusion) study with proximal intracranial occlusion (2014–2022) was queried (n=58 sites). Logistic regression analyses were used to derive a 9‐point score for predicting good functional outcome (modified Rankin Scale score 0–2 or return to premorbid modified Rankin Scale score) at 90 days, with sensitivity analyses for prespecified subgroups conducted using bootstrapped random forest regressions. Secondary outcomes included 90‐day functional independence (modified Rankin Scale score 0–2), poor outcome (modified Rankin Scale score 5–6), and 90‐day survival. The score was externally validated with a single‐center cohort (2014–2023). Of the 3231 included patients (n=2499 EVT), a 9‐point score included age, early computed tomography ischemic changes, and stroke severity, with higher points indicating a higher probability of a good functional outcome. The areas under the curve for the primary outcome among EVT and best medical management subgroups were 0.72 (95% CI, 0.70–0.74) and 0.87 (95% CI, 0.84–0.90), respectively, with similar performance in the external validation cohort (area under the curve, 0.71 [95% CI, 0.66–0.76]). Abstract

Background Subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) associated with vessel injury during endovascular therapy for acute ischemic stroke is a known complication. Arterial anatomy may predispose to increased risk of SAH and technical safety, yet factors such as clot location, arterial size, and tortuosity have not been explored. We examined these anatomic factors with respect to SAH during thrombectomy. Methods Arterial anatomy at the site of occlusion and mechanical thrombectomy during device deployment was detailed by the STRATIS (Systematic Evaluation of Patients Treated With Neurothrombectomy Devices for Acute Ischemic Stroke) core laboratory. Luminal diameters, arterial branching, and segmental tortuosity were measured. Arterial tortuosity was quantified using the distance factor metric. Statistical analyses included descriptive variables of arterial anatomy, with univariable and multivariable modeling to predict SAH. Results Arterial tortuosity in each segment from the proximal cerebral arteries to the site of occlusion was quantified in 790 subjects treated with mechanical thrombectomy in STRATIS. Cumulative arterial tortuosity to the site of vessel occlusion was greater in distal lesions. SAH was clearly linked with more distal thrombectomy (P = 0.02), occurring in 19.0% of distal M2, 16.7% of M3, 7.3% of distal M1, 5.8% of proximal M2, 2.4% of distal internal carotid artery, and 2.1% of proximal M1. In multivariable analysis after adjusting for arterial diameter at the site of occlusion, arterial tortuosity was a significant predictor of SAH (upper tertile versus 1: odds ratio, 3.08 [95% CI, 1.04–9.09]; P = 0.04), while arterial diameter was unrelated to SAH (P = 0.30) when accounting for tortuosity. Conclusion This novel analysis of arterial tortuosity and angiographic anatomy during mechanical thrombectomy establishes tortuosity as a determinant of SAH, providing insight for future techniques and innovative device designs.

Abstract

Background Mechanical thrombectomy is established for large‐vessel occlusions in acute ischemic stroke, but the potential role in distal vessel occlusions of medium arteries is less well established. Such medium or distal arterial segments have not been assessed with respect to thrombectomy devices used during endovascular therapy. We conducted an analysis of arterial size, segmental anatomy, and stent‐retriever device performance with respect to vessel size during thrombectomy. Methods The STRATIS registry angiography core laboratory adjudicated the exact location of the occlusion, proximal, and distal device deployment, relationship to arterial bifurcations, and anatomic nomenclature. Arterial diameters were measured at all these sites. Statistical analyses examined the relationship between vessel and stent size, and arterial recanalization using expanded Thrombolysis in Cerebral Infarction reperfusion score. Results Overall, 665 patients with stroke were included following thrombectomy using various Solitaire device sizes, including Solitaire 4×40, Solitaire 6×30, Solitaire 4×20, Solitaire 6×20, and Solitaire 4×15. Arterial diameter at the occlusion site was a median of 2.17 mm (interquartile range [IQR], 1.88–2.60 mm) in the distal M1, 1.67 mm (IQR, 1.47–2.06 mm) in the proximal M2 middle cerebral artery, 1.50 mm (IQR, 1.15–1.61 mm) in the distal M2 middle cerebral artery, 1.24 mm (IQR, 1.11–1.24 mm) in the M3 middle cerebral artery, and 1.88 mm (IQR, 1.49–1.94 mm) in the P1 posterior cerebral artery. Expanded Thrombolysis in Cerebral Infarction 2b to 3 reperfusion was achieved in all M3 or P1 segment occlusions. The rate of first‐pass recanalization was significantly higher in patients with medium (0.75–2 mm) versus large (>2 mm) vessel occlusion (69.5% versus 57.1%; P = 0.003). Conclusion Considerable overlap was noted between arterial sizes at occlusion sites carrying different segmental arterial nomenclature or vessel names. Substantial reperfusion may be achieved with currently available mechanical thrombectomy devices in medium arteries.

Abstract

Generating static novel views from an already captured image is a hard task in computer vision and graphics, in particular when the single input image has dynamic parts such as persons or moving objects. In this paper, we tackle this problem by proposing a new framework, called CycleMPI, that is capable of learning a multiplane image representation from single images through a cyclic training strategy for self-supervision. Our framework does not require stereo data for training, therefore it can be trained with massive visual data from the Internet, resulting in a better generalization capability even for very challenging cases. Although our method does not require stereo data for supervision, it reaches results on stereo datasets comparable to the state of the art in a zero-shot scenario. Abstract

The highly mobile electrons at the interface of SrTiO3 with other oxide insulators, such as LaAlO3 or AlOx, are of great current interest. A vertical gate voltage allows controlling a metal/superconductor-to-insulator transition, as well as electrical modulation of the spin-orbit Rashba coupling for spin-charge conversion. These findings raise important questions about the origin of the confined electrons as well as the mechanisms that govern the interfacial electric field. Here we use infrared ellipsometry and confocal Raman spectroscopy to show that an anomalous polar moment is induced at the interface that is non-collinear, highly asymmetric and hysteretic with respect to the vertical gate electric field. Our data indicate that an important role is played by the electromigration of oxygen vacancies and their clustering at the antiferrodistortive domain boundaries of SrTiO3, which generates local electric and possibly also flexoelectric fields and subsequent polar moments with a large lateral component. Our results open new perspectives for the defect engineering of lateral devices with strongly enhanced and hysteretic local electric fields that can be manipulated with various other parameters, like strain, temperature, or photons.

Abstract

BackgroundTo analyse the clinical characteristics of COVID-19 with acute ischaemic stroke (AIS) and identify factors predicting functional outcome.MethodsMulticentre retrospective cohort study of COVID-19 patients with AIS who presented to 30 stroke centres in the USA and Canada between 14 March and 30 August 2020. The primary endpoint was poor functional outcome, defined as a modified Rankin Scale (mRS) of 5 or 6 at discharge. Secondary endpoints include favourable outcome (mRS ≤2) and mortality at discharge, ordinal mRS (shift analysis), symptomatic intracranial haemorrhage (sICH) and occurrence of in-hospital complications.ResultsA total of 216 COVID-19 patients with AIS were included. 68.1% (147/216) were older than 60 years, while 31.9% (69/216) were younger. Median [IQR] National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) at presentation was 12.5 (15.8), and 44.2% (87/197) presented with large vessel occlusion (LVO). Abstract

In this paper, we propose a new Sound Event Classification (SEC) method which is inspired in recent works for out-of-distribution detection. In our method, we analyse all the activations of a generic CNN in order to produce feature representations using Gram Matrices. The similarity metrics are evaluated considering all possible classes, and the final prediction is defined as the class that minimizes the deviation with respect to the features seeing during training. The proposed approach can be applied to any CNN and our experimental evaluation of four different architectures on two datasets demonstrated that our method consistently improves the baseline models., Comment: To appear on ICASSP 2021

Abstract

BackgroundDuring the COVID-19 pandemic, decreased volumes of stroke admissions and mechanical thrombectomy were reported. The study's objective was to examine whether subarachnoid haemorrhage (SAH) hospitalisations and ruptured aneurysm coiling interventions demonstrated similar declines.MethodsWe conducted a cross-sectional, retrospective, observational study across 6 continents, 37 countries and 140 comprehensive stroke centres. Patients with the diagnosis of SAH, aneurysmal SAH, ruptured aneurysm coiling interventions and COVID-19 were identified by prospective aneurysm databases or by International Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision, codes. The 3-month cumulative volume, monthly volumes for SAH hospitalisations and ruptured aneurysm coiling procedures were compared for the period before (1 year and immediately before) and during the pandemic, defined as 1 March-31 May 2020. The prior 1-year control period (1 March-31 May 2019) was obtained to account for seasonal variation.FindingsThere was a significant decline in SAH hospitalisations, with 2044 admissions in the 3 months immediately before and 1585 admissions during the pandemic, representing a relative decline of 22.5% (95% CI -24.3% to -20.7%, p
