Abstract

Airworthiness regulations are key for guaranteeing the safety of civil aviation products and a significant indication of a nation’s aviation power. A well-developed airworthiness regulation system is an effective technical and management means by which a country with an advanced aviation industry ensures the safety of its civil aviation products and occupies the broadest market share while using International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) rules. As major national science and technology projects for large aircraft, aero-engines, and gas turbines are implemented, it is imperative for China to further improve its airworthiness regulation system. In this study, we clarify the implications of aero-engine airworthiness regulations and summarize the problems regarding aero-engine airworthiness regulations both in China and abroad. Based on this, the formation strategy and technical path for the next-generation airworthiness regulations of aero-engines are explored from the perspectives of ICAO and China’s civil aviation industry. The formulation strategy emphasizes the requirement for system safety, and specific principles include an equivalent level of safety, clear logic, international compatibility, and local applicability. Moreover, a new top-level framework for the aero-engine airworthiness regulations is proposed; it inherits the international lessons learned, ensures a high safety standard, and adapts to the progress of system safety technologies of aero-engines. Furthermore, we suggest that China should continuously deepen the research, simultaneously expand application, and coordinate industry development, thus to promote the construction of the aero-engine airworthiness regulation system in China.

Abstract

This paper aims to determine the relationship between thermodynamic entropy generation and fatigue crack propagation life of superalloy GH4169 at 300–650°C. The entire specimen was considered as the thermodynamic system. The plastic energy dissipation in the crack tip was obtained by finite element simulation utilizing the Chaboche nonlinear hardening model. Then the cyclic entropy generation rate (CEGR) and the accumulated entropy generation are calculated by combining simulation and experimental methods. Results show that the CEGR is a power function of the stress intensity factor range, and it is almost a constant at fatigue failure. The fatigue fracture entropy (FFE) increases as fatigue cycles at failure increase at constant temperature, but it first decreases and then increases when temperature increases from 300 to 650°C. A fatigue life prediction model based on the thermodynamic damage parameter is established and verified by comparison with experimental results and available data in the literature. Abstract

Crack growth analysis is essential for probabilistic damage tolerance assessment of aeroengine life-limited parts. Traditional crack growth models directly establish the stress ratio–crack growth rate or crack opening stress relationship and focus less on changes in the crack tip stress field and its influence, so the resolution and accuracy of maneuvering flight load spectral analysis are limited. To improve the accuracy and convenience of analysis, a parameter considering the effect of unloading amount on crack propagation resistance is proposed, and the corresponding analytical model is established. The corresponding process for acquiring the model parameters through the constant amplitude test data of a Ti-6AL-4V compact tension specimen is presented. Six kinds of flight load spectra with inserted load pairs with different stress ratios and repetition times are tested to verify the accuracy of the proposed model. All the deviations between the proposed model and test life results are less than 10%, which demonstrates the superiority of the proposed model over the crack closure and Walker-based models in addressing relevant loading spectra.
