Abstract Improving the forecasting accuracy of agricultural commodity prices is critical for many stakeholders namely, farmers, traders, exporters, governments, and all other partners in the price channel, to evade risks and enable appropriate policy interventions. However, the traditional mono-scale smoothing techniques often fail to capture the non-stationary and non-linear features due to their multifarious structure. This study has proposed a CEEMDAN (Complete Ensemble Empirical Mode Decomposition with Adaptive Noise)-TDNN (Time Delay Neural Network) model for forecasting non-linear, non-stationary agricultural price series. This study has evaluated its suitability in comparison with the other three major EMD (Empirical Mode Decomposition) variants (EMD, Ensemble EMD and Complementary Ensemble EMD) and the benchmark (Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average, Non-linear Support Vector Regression, Gradient Boosting Machine, Random Forest and TDNN) models using monthly wholesale prices of major oilseed crops in India. Outcomes from this investigation reflect that the CEEMDAN-TDNN hybrid models have outperformed all other forecasting models on the basis of evaluation metrics under consideration. For the proposed model, an average improvement of RMSE (Root Mean Square Error), Relative RMSE and MAPE (Mean Absolute Percentage Error) values has been observed to be 20.04%, 19.94% and 27.80%, respectively over the other EMD variant-based counterparts and 57.66%, 48.37% and 62.37%, respectively over the other benchmark stochastic and machine learning models. The CEEMD-TDNN and CEEMDAN-TDNN models have demonstrated superior performance in predicting the directional changes of monthly price series compared to other models. Additionally, the accuracy of forecasts generated by all models has been assessed using the Diebold-Mariano test, the Friedman test, and the Taylor diagram. The results confirm that the proposed hybrid model has outperformed the alternative models, providing a distinct advantage.

A crude hexane extract of seed kernel was processed into fatty acid methyl esters (FAME) using methanolic-sulfuric acid. Herbal mixtures (seed extracts of A. squamosa and essential oils of Cymbopogon nardus (citronella) and Pelargonium graveolens (geranium)) were evaluated against root knot nematode (Meloidogyne spp). The mortality of J2s of M. incognita in hexane and methanol extracts (AHE+AME) of A. squamosa with geranium oil (GO) ranged from 50.75-89.75% to 71.50-99.00% at 31.25 to 1000 μgmL-1 in 24 to 96 hours. The number of galls after CO+AHE+AME treatment was 4.0 ± 0.0 and 5.67 ± 0.58 galls/seedling and were recorded at 1000 and 500 μgmL-1 treatments on 30 days after inoculation, compared to carbofuran (3.0 ± 0.0 and 4.3 ± 0.6 galls/seedling) at 1000 and 500 μgmL-1 and velum prime (3.6 ± 0.6 and 4.6 ± 0.6 galls/seedling) at 1000 and 500 μgmL-1. The maximum shoot length of brinjal seedlings was recorded in CO+AHE+AME treatment compared to carbofuran (47.3 ± 0.6cm) and velum prime (48.7 ± 0.6 cm) at 1000 μg mL-1 in soil drenching application. Methanol and hexane extracts (AHE+AME) obtained from Annona squamosa seeds were investigated for their nematicidal properties. M. graminicola in direct-seeded rice at the nursery level and M. incognita in brinjal (eggplant) were controlled for up to sixty days when treated with these mixtures.

Abstract Background Woolly apple aphid (Eriosoma lanigerum Hausmann) (Homoptera: Aphididae) infests the aerial and edaphic portions of apple trees. It is responsible for the serious qualitative and quantitative reduction in apple fruits. This pest is mainly managed by chemical insecticides, so this present study was focused on the isolation of native entomopathogenic fungi (EPF), studying their growth characteristics and virulence against woolly apple aphids. Results Clonostachys rogersoniana, as an EPF from an insect cadaver, was isolated and characterized, using morphological, microscopic, and molecular techniques. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of the occurrence of this fungus from India and it is named “C. rogersoniana isolate PUSACR01”. The radial growth and conidial yield of this isolate were excellent on PDAY among ten different culture media, whereas the relative growth rate and conidial germination were good on PDA and CA. The isolated fungus showed 85 and 86.67% mortality rates in adult females of the woolly apple aphid on day 11 at a concentration of 1.0 × 107 and 1.0 × 108 conidia ml−1, respectively. The LC50 values determined by probit regression analysis for days 7, 9, and 11 were 1.12 × 107, 2.52 × 106 , and 4.74 × 105 conidia ml−1 , respectively, while LT50 for concentrations of 1.0 × 105, 1.0 × 106, 1.0 × 107, and 1.0 × 108 conidia ml−1 were 18.73, 9.39, 6.71, and 5.03 days, respectively. Conclusion Based on the present study, C. rogersoniana would be considered a good biological control agent against the woolly apple aphid in apple orchards.

Abstract Background While substantial research has explored rhizosphere and phyllosphere microbiomes, knowledge on flower microbiome, particularly in wild plants remains limited. This study explores into the diversity, abundance, and composition of bacterial and fungal communities on leaves and flowers of wild flowering plants in their natural alpine habitat, considering the influence of environmental factors. Methods We investigated 50 wild flowering plants representing 22 families across seven locations in Austria. Sampling sites encompassed varied soil types (carbonate/silicate) and altitudes (450–2760 m). Amplicon sequencing to characterize bacterial and fungal communities and quantitative PCR to assess microbial abundance was applied, and the influence of biotic and abiotic factors assessed. Results Our study revealed distinct bacterial and fungal communities on leaves and flowers, with higher diversity and richness on leaves (228 fungal and 91 bacterial ASVs) than on flowers (163 fungal and 55 bacterial ASVs). In addition, Gammaproteobacteria on flowers and Alphaproteobacteria on leaves suggests niche specialization for plant compartments. Location significantly shaped both community composition and fungal diversity on both plant parts. Notably, soil type influenced community composition but not diversity. Altitude was associated with increased fungal species diversity on leaves and flowers. Furthermore, significant effects of plant family identity emerged within a subset of seven families, impacting bacterial and fungal abundance, fungal Shannon diversity, and bacterial species richness, particularly on flowers. Conclusion This study provides novel insights into the specific microbiome of wild flowering plants, highlighting adaptations to local environments and plant–microbe coevolution. The observed specificity indicates a potential role in plant health and resilience, which is crucial for predicting how microbiomes respond to changing environments, ultimately aiding in the conservation of natural ecosystems facing climate change pressures.

Abstract Day-by-day increasing irrigation water scarcity requires the application of water-saving irrigation techniques to sustain agriculture production. A two-year field investigation was conducted during 2018 to 2020 to determine the effects of various mulches and irrigation volumes on the growth, leaf chemicals and soil properties of one-year-old sweet oranges (Citrus sinensis) cv. Mosambi. The study included three irrigation schedules, viz.100% ETc (I1), 80% ETc (I2), and 60% ETc (I3), and five different mulches were used, viz. without mulch, white polythene, coriander straw, dry grass and black polythene mulches, replicated thrice. Results demonstrated that drip irrigation with 100% ETc and mulching with black polythene mulch significantly increase the plant growth attributes like height of the plant (28.64%) (30.31%), rootstock girth (36.61%) (37.90%), plant canopy spread (E-W and N-S) (EW- 63.82%, NS- 63.87%) (EW- 67.56%, NS- 67.90%) and leaf area (2.4%) (2.34%). Furthermore, plant leaf chlorophyll content (2.41 mg g-1) (2.41 mg g-1) and leaf mineral content such as N (2.39%) (2.40%), P (0.16%) (0.165%), K (1.57%) (1.59%), Ca (47.34 g kg-1) (47.80 g kg-1), Mg (4.54 g kg-1) (4.57 g kg-1), Fe (120.51 g kg-1) (123.15 g kg-1) and Zn (39.00 g kg-1) (37.84 g kg-1) were noted to be significantly (p ≤ 0.05) higher in plants that received 100% (were ETc (I1) and mulching with black polythene mulch (M1) treatment. Taken together, the results suggested that treatments I1 and M1 have the potential to maximize plant growth, leaf chemicals and soil nutrients of sweet orange (Citrus sinensis) cv. Mosambi plants.

Abstract The present study investigates the temporal effects of flaxseed supplementation on boar semen quality, antioxidant status, and in-vivo fertility under high-temperature humidity index (THI) conditions in a sub-tropical climate. Twelve Hampshire crossbreed boars were randomly assigned to control and treatment groups, with the treatment group receiving flaxseed oil supplementation. Semen samples were collected and analyzed for semen quality parameters, sperm kinematics, and antioxidant status. Fertility outcomes were assessed through in-vivo mating trials. Flaxseed supplementation resulted in time dependent significant improvements in semen volume, sperm concentration, total and progressive sperm motility, sperm quality parameters, and antioxidant status. Fertility outcomes, including farrowing rates and litter sizes, were also enhanced in the flaxseed-supplemented group. These findings highlight the potential of flaxseed supplementation to improve boar fertility under high ambient stress conditions, with implications for optimizing reproductive performance in swine production systems.

Aim: The purpose of this study is to improve the precision of radiation treatment and sparing of organ-at-risk (OAR) in patients with thoracic esophageal cancer (EC) affecting the heart, lung, and spinal cord. To improve and personalize cancer treatment plans, it assesses the dosimetric benefits of coplanar RapidArc (RAc), hybrid arc (RAHyb), and noncoplanar RapidArc (RAnc). Materials and Methods: Fourteen patients with EC were chosen for our investigation from our hospital’s database. RapidArc (RA) plan patients had already received treatment. Retrospectively, additional RAnc and RAHyb plans were made with a prescription dose of 50.4 Gy in 28 fractions for the planning target volume (PTV). A prescription dose of 95% of PTV was used, so that three different treatment planning procedures could be compared. The cumulative dose-volume histogram was used to analyze the plan quality indices homogeneity index (HI), conformity index (CI), conformation number (CN) as well as the OARs doses to the lung, heart, and spinal cord. Results: In comparison to RAc and RAnc techniques, the study indicated that RAHyb plans significantly increased D95%, CI and HI; Dmax and CN did not differ substantially. In addition, compared to RAc (lung: 16.15 ± 0.03 Gy and heart: 23.91 ± 4.67 Gy) and RAnc (lung: 15.24 ± 0.03 Gy and heart 23.82 ± 5.10 Gy) plans, RAHyb resulted in significantly lower mean lung doses (15.10 ± 0.03 Gy) and heart doses (21.33 ± 6.99 Gy). Moreover, the RAHyb strategy showed a statistically significant (P < 0.05) lower average MU (452.7) than both the RAc (517.5) and RAnc (566.2) plans. Conclusion: The D95%, conformity, and homogeneity indices were better for hybrid arc plans compared to RAc and RAnc plans. They also successfully managed to reduce the lung and heart doses as well as the mean MU per fraction.

Abstract Background Fruit crops, including tropical and subtropical fruits like Avocado (Persea americana), Fig (Ficus carica), Date Palm (Phoenix dactylifera), Mango (Mangifera indica), Guava (Psidium guajava), Papaya (Carica papaya), Pineapple (Ananas comosus), and Banana (Musa acuminata) are economically vital, contributing significantly to global agricultural output, as classified by the FAO’s World Programme for the Census of Agriculture. Advancements in next-generation sequencing, have transformed fruit crop breeding by providing in-depth genomic and transcriptomic data. RNA sequencing enables high-throughput analysis of gene expression, and functional genomics, crucial for addressing horticultural challenges and enhancing fruit production. The genomic and expression data for key tropical and sub-tropical fruit crops is currently lacking a comprehensive expression atlas, revealing a significant gap in resources for horticulturists who require a unified platform with diverse datasets across various conditions and cultivars. Results The Fruit Expression Atlas (FEAtl), available at http://backlin.cabgrid.res.in/FEAtl/ , is a first-ever extensive and unified expression atlas for tropical and subtropical fruit crops developed using 3-tier architecture. The expressivity of coding and non-coding genes, encompassing 2,060 RNA-Seq samples across 91 tissue types and 177 BioProjects, it provides a comprehensive view of gene expression patterns for different tissues under various conditions. FEAtl features multiple tabs that cater to different aspects of the dataset, namely, Home, About, Analyze, Statistics, and Team and contains seven central functional modules: Transcript Information,Sample Information, Expression Profiles in FPKM and TPM, Functional Analysis, Genes Based on Tau Score, and Search for Specific Gene. The expression of a transcript of interest can be easily queried by searching by tissue ID and transcript type. Expression data can be displayed as a heat map, along with functional descriptions as well as Gene Ontology and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes. Conclusions This atlas represents a groundbreaking compilation of a wide array of information pertaining to eight distinct fruit crops and serves as a fundamental resource for comparative analysis among different fruit species and is a catalyst for functional genomic studies. Abstract This study aimed to classifying wheat genotypes using support vector machines (SVMs) improved with ensemble algorithms and optimization techniques. Utilizing data from 302 wheat genotypes and 14 morphological attributes to evaluate six SVM kernels: linear, radial basis function (RBF), sigmoid, and polynomial degrees 1–3. Various optimization methods, including grid search, random search, genetic algorithms, differential evolution, and particle swarm optimization, were used. The radial basis function kernel achieves the highest accuracy at 93.2%, and the weighted accuracy ensemble further improves it to 94.9%. This study shows the effectiveness of these methods in agricultural research and crop improvement. Notably, optimization-based SVM classification, particularly with particle swarm optimization, saw a significant 1.7% accuracy gain in the test set, reaching 94.9% accuracy. These findings underscore the efficacy of RBF kernels and optimization techniques in improving wheat genotype classification accuracy and highlight the potential of SVMs in agricultural research and crop improvement endeavors.

The present study investigated total phenolic contents (TPC), antioxidant activity, and antibacterial activities of aqueous extracts of leaf, bark, flower, and fruit pulp of C. fistula. The TPC of the extracts was determined by the Folin-Ciocalteu method. The 2, 2'-azino-bis 3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6sulfonic acid (ABTS), 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), and superoxide radical scavenging assays were used to evaluate antioxidant activity. Antibacterial activities were assessed using the well diffusion assay, minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC), and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC). The bacteria tested were Staphylococcus aureus (MTCC 7443) and Escherichia coli (MTCC 2991). It was found that bark extract contained the highest TPC (22.56 ± 0.91 mg of gallic acid equivalent /g of extract). The bark extract also showed the strongest ABTS scavenging activity (IC50=180.13µg/ml), DPPH scavenging activity (IC50=318.77µg /ml), and Superoxide radical scavenging activity (IC50=478.31µg/ml). Zones of Inhibition were observed in all the aqueous extracts against Staphylococcus aureus (MTCC 7443) and Escherichia coli (MTCC 2991). The antibacterial potential of the extracts was found to be dosedependent. At 100 mg/ml, the highest average Zone of Inhibition of 14.33±0.33 mm and 16.0±0.58 mm was recorded in aqueous bark extract against S. aureus (MTCC 7443), and E. coli (MTCC 2991) respectively. The bark extract of C. fistula was most potent against E. coli (MTCC 2991) and S. aureus (MTCC 7443), with MIC values of 3.125 mg/mL and 6.25 mg/mL, respectively.

Abstract The study investigates the interplay of land use dynamics and climate change on the hydrological regime of the Ravi River using a comprehensive approach integrating Geographic Information System (GIS), remote sensing, and hydrological modeling at the catchment scale. Employing the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) model, simulations were conducted to evaluate the hydrological response of the Ravi River to both current conditions and projected future scenarios of land use and climate change. This study differs from previous ones by simulating future land use and climate scenarios, offering a solid framework for understanding their impact on river flow dynamics. Model calibration and validation were performed for distinct periods (1999–2002 and 2003–2005), yielding satisfactory performance indicators (NSE, R2, PBIAS = 0.85, 0.83, and 10.01 in calibration and 0.87, 0.89, and 7.2 in validation). Through supervised classification techniques on Landsat imagery and TerrSet modeling, current and future land use maps were generated, revealing a notable increase in built-up areas from 1990 to 2020 and projections indicating further expansion by 31.7% from 2020 to 2100. Climate change projections under different socioeconomic pathways (SSP2 and SSP5) were derived for precipitation and temperature, with statistical downscaling applied using the CMhyd model. Results suggest substantial increases in precipitation (10.9 − 14.9%) and temperature (12.2 − 15.9%) across the SSP scenarios by the end of the century. Two scenarios, considering future climate conditions with current and future land use patterns, were analyzed to understand their combined impact on hydrological responses. In both scenarios, inflows to the Ravi River are projected to rise significantly (19.4 − 28.4%) from 2016 to 2100, indicating a considerable alteration in seasonal flow patterns. Additionally, historical data indicate a concerning trend of annual groundwater depth decline (0.8 m/year) from 1996 to 2020, attributed to land use and climate changes. The findings underscore the urgency for planners and managers to incorporate climate and land cover considerations into their strategies, given the potential implications for water resource management and environmental sustainability.

Abstract The main challenges for utilizing daily evapotranspiration (ET) estimation in the study area revolve around the need for accurate and reliable data inputs, as well as the interpretation of ET dynamics within the context of local agricultural practices and environmental conditions. Factors such as cloud cover, atmospheric aerosols, and variations in land cover pose challenges to the precise estimation of ET from remote sensing data. This research aimed to utilize Landsat 8 and 9 datasets from the 2022–23 period in the Udham Singh Nagar district to apply the modified Priestley-Taylor (MPT) model for estimating ET. An average ET was estimated 1.33, 1.57, 1.70, 2.99, and 3.20 mm day−1 with 0.29, 0.33, 0.41, 0.69, and 1.03 standard deviation for December, January, February, March, and April month, respectively. In the validation phase, a strong correlation was found between the evaporative fraction derived from MPT and that observed by lysimeter, with R2 = 0.71, mean biased error = 0.04 mm day−1, root mean squared error = 0.62 mm day-1 and agreement index of 0.914. These results collectively support the effectiveness of the MPT model in accurately estimating ET across Udham Singh Nagar district. In essence, this research not only confirms the MPT model’s capability in ET estimation but also offers detailed insights into the spatial and temporal fluctuations of energy fluxes and daily ET rates.

Abstract This study demonstrated the plant growth-promoting capabilities of native actinobacterial strains obtained from different regions of the rice plant, including the rhizosphere (FT1, FTSA2, FB2, and FH7) and endosphere (EB6). We delved into the molecular mechanisms underlying the beneficial effects of these plant-microbe interactions by conducting a transcriptional analysis of a select group of key genes involved in phytohormone pathways. Through in vitro screening for various plant growth-promoting (PGP) traits, all tested isolates exhibited positive traits for indole-3-acetic acid synthesis and siderophore production, with FT1 being the sole producer of hydrogen cyanide (HCN). All isolates were identified as members of the Streptomyces genus through 16S rRNA amplification. In pot culture experiments, rice seeds inoculated with strains FB2 and FTSA2 exhibited significant increases in shoot dry mass by 7% and 34%, respectively, and total biomass by 8% and 30%, respectively. All strains led to increased leaf nitrogen levels, with FTSA2 demonstrating the highest increase (4.3%). On the contrary, strains FB2 and FT1 increased root length, root weight ratio, root volume, and root surface area, leading to higher root nitrogen content. All isolates, except for FB2, enhanced total chlorophyll and carotenoid levels. Additionally, qRT-PCR analysis supported these findings, revealing differential gene expression in auxin (OsAUX1, OsIAA1, OsYUCCA1, OsYUCCA3), gibberellin (OsGID1, OsGA20ox-1), and cytokinin (OsIPT3, OsIPT5) pathways in response to specific actinobacterial treatments. These actinobacterial strains, which enhance both aboveground and belowground crop characteristics, warrant further evaluation in field trials, either as individual strains or in consortia. This could lead to the development of commercial bioinoculants for use in integrated nutrient management practices.

Abstract Purpose To assess the potential benefit of impregnating Merocel (a non‐absorbable nasal dressing) with a topical steroid solution, for use as a direct and slow local delivery system of steroids after sinus surgery to improve postoperative wound healing. Methods In this randomized controlled trial, 40 patients with bilateral chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyposis were subjected to functional endoscopic sinus surgery. Following the completion of the surgery, Merocel packs were inserted in the bilateral nasal cavities and infiltrated with 4 mL triamcinolone (40 mg/mL) in one nasal cavity (treatment group) and 4 mL normal saline in the other (control group). Nasal packs were removed on the third postoperative day and postoperative healing assessment was done on postoperative Weeks 1, 2, 4, and 12. The findings were noted as per Lund Kennedy (LKES) and perioperative sinus endoscopy (POSE) scores and compared on both sides. Results Significant (P

Low nutrient use efficiency (NUE) of conventional chemical fertilizers has resulted in the loss of costly nutrients and related environmental implications. Consequently, enhancing crop productivity and nutrient use efficiency are major challenges. In this backdrop, a field experiment was conducted to study the impact of pine oleoresin (POR) and neem oil (NO) coated urea (CU) fertilizers on crop productivity and nutrient recovery efficiency in maize-wheat cropping system grown on Vertisols of central India. The treatment combinations were POR-CU and NO-CU at 100% and 75% of recommended doses of fertilizers (RDF); normal urea (100% RDF); and an unfertilized control. Two years results indicated that the increment in grain yields due to POR-CU and NO-CU applications were 18.8% and 11.7% for maize and 11.6% and 3.49% for wheat, respectively, over normal urea. The apparent recovery efficiency of N (REN) for POR-CU, NO-CU, and normal urea at 100% RDF were 65.8%, 64.2%, and 51.4% in maize and 43.2%, 37.0%, and 34.6% in wheat, respectively. There was no significant difference noticed between POR-CU and NO-CU with respect to grain yield and N recovery efficiency. Hence, the study suggested that POR-CU could be a possible alternative option to NO-CU for improving crop yield and NUE. However, further research is needed to determine how effective POR-CU is in diverse agricultural systems and climatic conditions.

Delhi and its surrounding region are among the important intraplate seismically active regions of India. According to the Bureau of Indian Standards, it lies in seismic zone IV and is capable of generating small to moderate earthquakes. This region has also experienced moderate to large earthquakes in the past due to its proximity to the Himalayan arc and its own tectonics. There is an urgent need to assess the source characteristics of earthquakes and their scaling relationships for a reliable and accurate estimation of seismic hazard. Source parameters and their scaling relations have been estimated for this region using well-located small to moderate earthquakes (Mw 2.3–5.1) that occurred during the period from 2000 to 2020. For this purpose, we investigated three components of earthquake waveform data using the ω−2 source model. The outcomes show the occurrence of low static stress drop (0.5–52.87 ​bars) in the Delhi region indicating approximately 57% of the events exhibit a stress drop < 10 ​bars, 27 % of events fall in the range of 10–20 ​bars, and only 16 % events exhibit stress drop > 20 ​bars. This observation suggests that the shallow subsurface of the study region may have low-strength material characteristics and a heterogeneous nature. In addition, the Zuniga parameter (ε) is estimated less than 1.0 by analyzing static and apparent stress drops, which infers the partial stress drop model fits very well in the study region. The seismic moment varies from 1.02×1012 to 1.03×1016 ​N.m. for P-wave and 6.46×1011 Nm to 7.54×1015 Nm for S-wave. The average seismic source radius lies in the range of 0.1–3.05 ​km with a ratio {r(p)/r(s)} of 1.5 ​km in the study region. The estimated values of corner frequency are comparatively lower for the S-wave (1.5–18.2 ​Hz) than for the P-wave (1.88–19.3 ​Hz) suggesting the ‘shifting properties’ of the corner frequency corroborated with the theoretical agreement. The seismic energy (E) is estimated using both P- and S-wave separately and its average value varies from 4.28×106 to 6.22×1011 ​J. The estimated stress drop and seismic moment demonstrate no correlation with each other. Therefore small to moderate-size earthquakes inherently follow the self-similarity behavior. The obtained scaling relationship between Seismic Moment and Corner Frequency is Mo=7.94∗1015fc−2.97. The derived scaling relations and source parameters are expected to provide a priori information for the assessment of seismic hazards and are useful in the simulation of strong ground motion characteristics in the region.

Environmental crises, land degradation, declining factor productivity, and farm profitability questioned the sustainability of linear economy-based existing agricultural production model. Hence, there is a dire need to design and develop circular economy-based production systems to meet the twin objectives of environmental sustainability and food security. Therefore, the productive capacity, natural resource conserving ability, and biomass recycling potential of four intensified maize-based systems viz. maize (Zea mays) + sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas)-wheat, maize + colocasia (Colocasia esculenta)-wheat, maize + turmeric (Curcuma longa), and maize + ginger (Zingiber officinale) were tested consecutively for three years (2020, 2021 and 22) in a fixed plot manner at Dehradun region of the Indian Himalaya against the existing maize-wheat systems. The result showed that the maize + sweet potato-wheat system significantly reduced runoff loss (166.3 mm) over the maize-wheat system. The highest through fall (68.12 %) and the lowest stem flow (23.54 %) were recorded with sole maize. On the contrary, the maize + sweet potato system has the highest stem flow (36.15 %) and the lowest through fall. Similarly, the maize + sweet potato system had 5.6 times lesser soil erosion and 0.77 t ha−1 higher maize productivity over the maize-wheat system. Furthermore, the maize + sweet potato system recorded significantly higher soil moisture (19.3%), infiltration rate (0.95 cm h−1), and organic carbon (0.78%) over the rest of the systems. The maize + sweet potato system also recycled the highest nitrogen (299.2 kg ha−1), phosphorus, (31.0 kg ha−1), and potassium (276.2 kg ha−1) into the soil system. Hence, it can be inferred that concurrent cultivation of sweet potato, with maize, is a soil-supportive, resource-conserving, and productive production model and can be recommended for achieving the circular economy targets in the Indian Himalayas.

The Velachery Municipality is highly vulnerable to natural disasters such as Storms, and floods due to its geo-environmental settings. It is evident that the Nivar cyclone has severely hit and caused flooding in the Velachery region during the fourth week of November 2020. Along with the increasing urbanization, it is also expected to experience severe impacts of climate change soon. Urbanization exerts additional environmental stress and amplifies the impact of natural disasters. The study area has been divided into 3 clusters based on the geographical location. The survey has been carried out in 180 households and data was statically analyzed. Indicators such as exposure, sensitivity, and adaptive capacity were grouped and aligned with available data. Data were aggregated using a composite index and Urban Flood Vulnerability was compared to Cluster wise. The results reveal an extreme variability in terms of flood magnitude and frequency in Velachery. The vulnerability spider diagram suggests that Cluster 2 is more vulnerable in terms of less capacity to cope, and Cluster 3 is more vulnerable in terms of Exposure, Health, Economic susceptibility, physical susceptibility, less capacity to anticipate, cope and recover. Overall Cluster 3 has higher flood vulnerability compared to other clusters. The identification of flood-vulnerable zones has been done in the study and recommended flood resilience measures for Velachery Municipality, Chennai.

ABSTRACTA computational technique for analysing coupled system of singularly perturbed convection-diffusion delay differential equations with large delay is presented in this study. We solve this problem using non-polynomial spline technique and arrive at a system that can potentially be solved. To show the theoretical investigation, an example is solved for different perturbation parameter values, and the computational results are shown in tables. The model we have proposed is of first order convergent, and this technique indicated that the acquired findings were more accurate than earlier results.

A laboratory incubation experiment was conducted for 36 days to study the effect of pigeon pea biochar (PPB) and wood biochar (WB) on carbon mineralization of native soil organic carbon (SOC) and municipal solid waste compost (MSWC) applied to soil. The MSWC addition enhanced soil respiration by 2-fold (231 mg C kg-1 soil) over the control (118 mg C kg-1 soil). The PPB addition significantly (P < 0.05) increased cumulative loss of carbon as CO2, whereas WB significantly decreased the cumulative loss of C over control. Addition of PPB at 5% and 10% levels increased SOC mineralization (positive priming) +22.9% and +31.2%, respectively; whereas reduction in SOC mineralization (negative priming) was noticed in WB (5% and 10%) treated soils by -3.1% and -21.7%, respectively. Similarly, WB induced strong negative priming effects (-21.9% and -29.5%), while PPB caused a weak positive priming effect (+3.0% and +11.6%) at 5% and 10% levels on mineralization of added labile carbon substrate (MSWC), respectively. Results indicate the hardwood (Prosopis juliflora) biochar exhibits refractory properties that inhibit mineralization of both native SOC and applied organic compost (MSWC), and thereby it can be used as an amendment to stabilize native and applied organic matter in soil, which may significantly contribute to soil carbon sequestration.

Abstract Background Male infertility due to spermatogenesis defects affects millions of men worldwide. However, the genetic etiology of the vast majority remains unclear. The present study was undertaken to assess the association of DNAH6 and ATPase6 genes in asthenozoospermia patients in the northern region of India. Methods A total of 60 semen samples were collected for the study, of which 30 were from the case group and 30 were from the control group. The semen samples for the case group (asthenozoospermia) and control groups were collected from IVF and Reproductive Biology Centre, Maulana Azad Medical College, New Delhi. Sperm count and motility were classified as per World Health Organization (WHO 2021) protocol. A total genomic DNA was extracted as per the stranded TRIZOL method with little modification. Results In-vitro molecular characterizations of DNAH6 and ATPase6 genes in both groups were checked by Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR). The 675 bp and 375 bp amplicons were amplified using PCR for ATPase6 and DNAH6 genes. Our study results showed a significant (P ≤ 0.05) null deletion of DNAH6 and ATPase6 genes in asthenozoospermia patients as compared to the control. We found the significant null deletion of DNAH6 in case 45.0%, and the control group was 11.7%. However, in the case of APTase6, it was 26.7% and 10.0%, respectively. Conclusions Our study concluded that the presence of DHAH6 and ATPase6 genes had a significant impact on male infertility.

Introduction: Weakened facial movements are early-stage symptoms of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). ALS is generally detected based on changes in facial expressions, but large differences between individuals can lead to subjectivity in the diagnosis. We have proposed a computerized analysis of facial expression videos to detect ALS. Methods: This study investigated the action units obtained from facial expression videos to differentiate between ALS patients and healthy individuals, identifying the specific action units and facial expressions that give the best results. We utilized the Toronto NeuroFace Dataset, which includes nine facial expression tasks for healthy individuals and ALS patients. Results: The best classification accuracy was 0.91 obtained for the pretending to smile with tight lips expression. Conclusion: This pilot study shows the potential of using computerized facial expression analysis based on action units to identify facial weakness symptoms in ALS.

Abstract Background Endophytic fungi (EF) reside within plants without causing harm and provide benefits such as enhancing nutrients and producing bioactive compounds, which improve the medicinal properties of host plants. Selecting plants with established medicinal properties for studying EF is important, as it allows a deeper understanding of their influence. Therefore, the study aimed to investigate the impact of EF after inoculating the medicinal plant Perilla frutescens, specifically focusing on their role in enhancing medicinal properties. Results In the current study, the impact of two EF i.e., Irpex lenis and Schizophyllum commune isolated from A. bracteosa was observed on plant Perilla frutescens leaves after inoculation. Plants were divided into four groups i.e., group A: the control group, group B: inoculated with I. lenis; group C: inoculated with S. commune and group D: inoculated with both the EF. Inoculation impact of I. lenis showed an increase in the concentration of chlorophyll a (5.32 mg/g), chlorophyll b (4.46 mg/g), total chlorophyll content (9.78 mg/g), protein (68.517 ± 0.77 mg/g), carbohydrates (137.886 ± 13.71 mg/g), and crude fiber (3.333 ± 0.37%). Furthermore, the plants inoculated with I. lenis showed the highest concentrations of P (14605 mg/kg), Mg (4964.320 mg/kg), Ca (27389.400 mg/kg), and Mn (86.883 mg/kg). The results of the phytochemical analysis also indicated an increased content of total flavonoids (2.347 mg/g), phenols (3.086 mg/g), tannins (3.902 mg/g), and alkaloids (1.037 mg/g) in the leaf extract of P. frutescens inoculated with I. lenis. Thus, overall the best results of inoculation were observed in Group B i.e. inoculated with I. lenis. GC-MS analysis of methanol leaf extract showed ten bioactive constituents, including 9-Octadecenoic acid (Z)-, methyl ester, and hexadecanoic acid, methyl ester as major constituents found in all the groups of P. frutescens leaves. The phenol (gallic acid) and flavonoids (rutin, kaempferol, and quercetin) were also observed to increase after inoculation by HPTLC analysis. The enhancement in the phytochemical content was co-related with improved anti-oxidant potential which was analyzed by DPPH (% Inhibition: 83.45 µg/ml) and FRAP (2.980 µM Fe (II) equivalent) assay as compared with the control group. Conclusion Inoculation with I. lenis significantly enhances the uptake of nutritional constituents, phytochemicals, and antioxidant properties in P. frutescens, suggesting its potential to boost the therapeutic properties of host plants. Context: Rabies is a fatal zoonotic disease that is endemic in India. Both forms of rabies, namely, encephalitic and furious, invariably lead to coma and death. Lack of awareness is the most critical barrier in accessing timely post-exposure prophylaxis that can prevent the progression to clinical disease. Aims: To report the case series of fourteen clinically suspected rabies cases. Settings and Design: We followed a retrospective study design. Data were collected from the Anti Rabies Section of Government Medical College, Jammu, which is a tertiary care hospital of Jammu Division. Methods and Material: We collected data of all patients over a period of three years, from 2017 to 2020, who were diagnosed as cases of clinically suspected rabies on the basis of classic signs and symptoms and who finally succumbed to the disease. Statistical Analysis Used: Descriptive statistics was used to describe the results of the study Results: In the present description, the mean age of the patients was 31 ± 18.6 years. Out of 14 suspected cases, 9 had not received any post-exposure prophylaxis—neither vaccine nor serum—and instead visited spiritual faith healers. The remaining patients had history of either incomplete, unknown, or incorrect vaccination status. Median duration of presentation of symptoms after dog bite was 42 days, with a range of 15–180 days. Mean survival of patients after presentation of symptoms was around 1.8 days Conclusions: Low level of awareness resulted in non-seeking of health-care services after animal bites.

Objective: To explore the predictive value of neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) in in-hospital mortality in sepsis patients. Methods: A prospective observational cross-sectional study was conducted on 100 patients with septicemia. The data about the patient’s demography, medical history, general examination including pulse rate, blood pressure, etc, use of vasopressor support, need for renal replacement therapy, mechanical ventilation, outcome, and lab parameters including total lymphocyte count with neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio were recorded. And parameters between survivals and non-survivals were compared. Results: Out of 100 patients, 80% were from rural backgrounds. Most patients were 50 to 59 years old. 26 Patients were dead. The patients in the nonsurvivor group were older and more had a history of diabetes mellitus when compared with the survivor group. The non-survivor group had a higher NLR, APACHE II, and SOFA score. Conclusions: NLR is a readily available parameter and can be used as a good prognostic indicator for mortality in sepsis patients.

Midfacial defects are defined as ones limited to the middle one-third of the face in the horizontal axis which communes with intraoral maxillary defects. They affect patient’s phonation, chewing capacity, quality of life, and social and community behavior. Surgical reconstruction alone is inadequate to rehabilitate these large midfacial defects, thereby necessitating use of a maxillofacial prosthesis to restore form, function, esthetics and comfort. The present case report presents the prosthetic restoration of a surgical defect secondary to treatment of rhinocerebral mucormycosis with an extraoral (exenteration) and intraoral (Armany Class IV) defect connected with magnetic attachment.

Abstract Tilletia indica Mitra causes Karnal bunt (KB) in wheat by pathogenic dikaryophase. The present study is the first to provide the draft genomes of the dikaryon (PSWKBGD-3) and its two monosporidial lines (PSWKBGH-1 and 2) using Illumina and PacBio reads, their annotation and the comparative analyses among the three genomes by extracting polymorphic SSR markers. The trancriptome from infected wheat grains of the susceptible wheat cultivar WL711 at 24 h, 48h, and 7d after inoculation of PSWKBGH-1, 2 and PSWKBGD-3 were also isolated. Further, two transcriptome analyses were performed utilizing T. indica transcriptome to extract dikaryon genes responsible for pathogenesis, and wheat transcriptome to extract wheat genes affected by dikaryon involved in plant-pathogen interaction during progression of KB in wheat. A total of 54, 529, and 87 genes at 24hai, 48hai, and 7dai, respectively were upregulated in dikaryon stage while 21, 35, and 134 genes of T. indica at 24hai, 48hai, and 7dai, respectively, were activated only in dikaryon stage. While, a total of 23, 17, and 52 wheat genes at 24hai, 48hai, and 7dai, respectively were upregulated due to the presence of dikaryon stage only. The results obtained during this study have been compiled in a web resource called TiGeR ( http://backlin.cabgrid.res.in/tiger/ ), which is the first genomic resource for T. indica cataloguing genes, genomic and polymorphic SSRs of the three T. indica lines, wheat and T. indica DEGs as well as wheat genes affected by T. indica dikaryon along with the pathogenecity related proteins of T. indica dikaryon during incidence of KB at different time points. The present study would be helpful to understand the role of dikaryon in plant-pathogen interaction during progression of KB, which would be helpful to manage KB in wheat, and to develop KB-resistant wheat varieties.

Abstract Background Biofortification represents a promising and sustainable strategy for mitigating global nutrient deficiencies. However, its successful implementation poses significant challenges. Among staple crops, wheat emerges as a prime candidate to address these nutritional gaps. Wheat biofortification offers a robust approach to enhance wheat cultivars by elevating the micronutrient levels in grains, addressing one of the most crucial global concerns in the present era. Main text Biofortification is a promising, but complex avenue, with numerous limitations and challenges to face. Notably, micronutrients such as iron (Fe), zinc (Zn), selenium (Se), and copper (Cu) can significantly impact human health. Improving Fe, Zn, Se, and Cu contents in wheat could be therefore relevant to combat malnutrition. In this review, particular emphasis has been placed on understanding the extent of genetic variability of micronutrients in diverse Triticum species, along with their associated mechanisms of uptake, translocation, accumulation and different classical to advanced approaches for wheat biofortification. Conclusions By delving into micronutrient variability in Triticum species and their associated mechanisms, this review underscores the potential for targeted wheat biofortification. By integrating various approaches, from conventional breeding to modern biotechnological interventions, the path is paved towards enhancing the nutritional value of this vital crop, promising a brighter and healthier future for global food security and human well-being.

Introduction: Measles, a highly transmissible disease marked by fever and a maculopapular rash, posed a substantial threat to life in the 1960s. Nevertheless, the advent of the measles vaccine had a profound impact, significantly diminishing its toll on mortality. Similarly, through effective influenza surveillance and early epidemic warning systems, public health officials can timely identify influenza trends and provide crucial scientific support for prevention and control measures. This proactive approach holds great public health significance. Aim: To analyse the long-term trend of measles cases in Rajasthan, India, and the impact of Coronavirus Disease-2019 (COVID-19) on it, with future predictions using Auto-Regressive Integrated Moving Average (ARIMA) modelling. Materials and Methods: The present study was a retrospective, descriptive observational study in which monthly diagnosed measles cases were collected from the Measles Rubella Laboratory, Department of Microbiology, Sawai Man Singh Medical College, Jaipur, Rajasthan, India, for the period of April 2010 to April 2023. An ARIMA model was developed using data from 2010 to 2020 to predict the monthly number of measles cases in 2021. The predicted values were then compared to the actual cases in 2021 to assess the model’s accuracy. Results: Out of the total positive cases, males were slightly more prone to acquire infection than females (1734 males, 54%; 1477 females, 46%). The monthly index for new measles cases ranged from 0.11 to 2.6. It reached its lowest point in July (0.106) and August (0.25) and peaked in March (2.594) and April (1.84). The overall trend was fluctuating; however, the incidence of measles cases clearly increased after the year 2021. The difference between observed cases and predicted cases for the period of April 2020 to December 2021 was not statistically significant (t-value=0.261 and p-value=0.797). Conclusion: The fluctuating trend of measles was observed during the last decade; however, the observed cases of measles showed an upward trajectory during and after the COVID-19 outbreak. This study also highlighted the monthly index of the measles cases, which peaked in March to April and was lowest in July to August.

Abstract The Electrocardiogram (ECG) records are crucial for predicting heart diseases and evaluating patient’s health conditions. ECG signals provide essential peak values that reflect reliable health information. Analyzing ECG signals is a fundamental technique for computerized prediction with advancements in Very Large-Scale Integration (VLSI) technology and significantly impacts in biomedical signal processing. VLSI advancements focus on high-speed circuit functionality while minimizing power consumption and area occupancy. In ECG signal denoising, digital filters like Infinite Impulse Response (IIR) and Finite Impulse Response (FIR) are commonly used. The FIR filters are preferred for their higher-order performance and stability over IIR filters, especially in real-time applications. The Modified FIR (MFIR) blocks were reconstructed using the optimized adder-multiplier block for better noise reduction performance. The MIT-BIT database is used as reference where the noises are filtered by the MFIR based on Optimized Kogge Stone Adder (OKSA). Features are extracted and analyzed using Discrete wavelet transform (DWT) and Cross Correlation (CC). At this modern era, Hybrid methods of Machine Learning (HMLM) methods are preferred because of their combined performance which is better than non-fused methods. The accuracy of the Hybrid Neural Network (HNN) model reached 92.3%, surpassing other models such as Generalized Sequential Neural Networks (GSNN), Artificial Neural Networks (ANN), Support Vector Machine with linear kernel (SVM linear), and Support Vector Machine with Radial Basis Function kernel (SVM RBF) by margins of 3.3%, 5.3%, 23.3%, and 24.3%, respectively. While the precision of the HNN is 91.1%, it was slightly lower than GSNN and ANN but higher than both SVM linear and SVM -RBF. The HNN with various features are incorporated to improve the ECG classification. The accuracy of the HNN is switched to 95.99% when the DWT and CC are combined. Also, it improvises other parameters such as precision 93.88%, recall is 0.94, F1 score is 0.88, Kappa is 0.89, kurtosis is 1.54, skewness is 1.52 and error rate 0.076. These parameters are higher than recently developed models whose algorithms and methods accuracy is more than 90%.

Abstract Background Radiotherapy is essential in the treatment of prostate cancer. An alternative to conventional photon radiotherapy is the application of carbon ions, which provide a superior intratumoral dose distribution and less induced damage to adjacent healthy tissue. A common characteristic of prostate cancer cells is their dependence on androgens which is exploited therapeutically by androgen deprivation therapy in the advanced prostate cancer stage. Here, we aimed to analyze the transcriptomic response of prostate cancer cells to irradiation by photons in comparison to carbon ions, focusing on DNA damage, DNA repair and androgen receptor signaling. Methods Prostate cancer cell lines LNCaP (functional TP53 and androgen receptor signaling) and DU145 (dysfunctional TP53 and androgen receptor signaling) were irradiated by photons or carbon ions and the subsequent DNA damage was assessed by immuno-cytofluorescence. Furthermore, the cells were treated with an androgen-receptor agonist. The effects of irradiation and androgen treatment on the gene regulation and the transcriptome were investigated by RT-qPCR and RNA sequencing, followed by bioinformatic analysis. Results Following photon or carbon ion irradiation, both LNCaP and DU145 cells showed a dose-dependent amount of visible DNA damage that decreased over time, indicating occurring DNA repair. In terms of gene regulation, mRNAs involved in the TP53-dependent DNA damage response were significantly upregulated by photons and carbon ions in LNCaP but not in DU145 cells, which generally showed low levels of gene regulation after irradiation. Both LNCaP and DU145 cells responded to photons and carbon ions by downregulation of genes involved in DNA repair and cell cycle, partially resembling the transcriptome response to the applied androgen receptor agonist. Neither photons nor carbon ions significantly affected canonical androgen receptor-dependent gene regulation. Furthermore, certain genes that were specifically regulated by either photon or carbon ion irradiation were identified. Conclusion Photon and carbon ion irradiation showed a significant congruence in terms of induced signaling pathways and transcriptomic responses. These responses were strongly impacted by the TP53 status. Nevertheless, irradiation mode-dependent distinct gene regulations with undefined implication for radiotherapy outcome were revealed. Androgen receptor signaling and irradiations shared regulation of certain genes with respect to DNA-repair and cell-cycle.

Biomass conversion to value added chemicals to be used as industrial platform molecules for further synthesis of commodity chemicals has opened new window for scientists. Biomass is a lignocellulosic compound and it requires technological development since biomass is a complex molecule of linear, cyclic and aromatic hydrocarbons. Lignin being aromatic in nature can beneficial for the production of phenolic hydrocarbons. In this work conversion of Guaiacol, a model lignin compound to different aromatic hydrocarbon is performed over pure silica and alumina silica catalysts e.g. SBA-15and ZSM-5 in a fixed bed catalytic reactor. SBA-15 material was synthesized at different aging time leading to improvement in surface area and pore diameter whereas ZSM-5 was pre-treated with H3PO4 and KOH to modify their acidic strength. Maximum Guaiacol conversion in absence of catalyst was obtained aa 90.1 % at 550oC, 97.33 % at 550 °c in presence of SBA-15 (C) and 95.33 % in presence of P/ZSM-5, indicating the catalyst helps in enhancing the conversion, however depends on the type of catalysts and its properties like surface area, pore diameter and Lews/Bronsted acid strength. Similarly the selectivity of catechol was observed to be maximum with SBA-15 (C) as compared to other catalyst owing to its high surface area and large pore diameter. The GCMS analysis of the liquid product obtained includes Dimethyl phenol, 2-dimethoxy benzene, 2-ethyl,5-methyl phenol, catechol, Ethynylanisole and O-cresol

Introduction: Adhesive capsulitis of shoulder due to uncertain etiology of glenohumeral joint characterized by spontaneous onset of pain and reduction in the arc of active and passive movements at glenohumeral joint and essentially normal radiograph. It is considered a self-limiting condition with a natural history of 1–3 years while some have refractory course. Most of adhesive capsulitis patients are successfully treated with nonsurgical treatment such as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS), oral/intra-articular corticosteroids, and hydrodialtation, among nonsurgical modalities, ozone and laser are newer, safe, and show promising results in adhesive capsulitis management. A current study was done to compare between ozone therapy and laser therapy in terms of efficacy and utility in periarthritis shoulder. Materials and Methods: All patients who presented with shoulder pain and stiffness at the orthopedics outpatient department of tertiary care center of rural North India, on the basis of clinical history and examination, those who were diagnosed with adhesive capsulitis and fulfilling the inclusion criteria and exclusion criteria were included in the study, after obtaining proper informed and written consent, cases were randomized into two groups for laser and ozone therapy. Results: A total of 55 patients were included in the study, among them, 42 patients (20 patients in the laser and 22 in the ozone group) were followed up to a final follow-up of 6 months and 13 patients lost their follow-up. Disabilities of the arm, shoulder, and hand questionnaire (DASH) score ozone group showed a gradual decline from the preinjection score of 55.68–17.78 at 6 months. In the laser group, there is also a decline in DASH scores from the pretreatment score of 57.56–23.34 at 6 months. Difference in DASH score was insignificant up to 4 weeks across both groups. On follow-up after 4 weeks up to 6 months showed a significant difference in DASH score across both groups. Decline in the ozone group was more as compared to the laser group (P < 0.026). Conclusion: Both ozone and laser are safe and effective modalities of treatment of adhesive capsulitis but ozone is more effective in long term.

This paper presents the influence of different amounts of Coarse recycled concrete aggregate (CRCA) obtained from a Construction and Demolition Waste (CDW) Plant in Delhi, on the durability properties of a 40 MPa Self Compacting Concrete (SCC). Aggregate Packing (bulk) Density (APD) method was adopted to obtain an aggregate mixture exhibiting maximum bulk density/least void content (45%) with which the SCC mixes was prepared. In addition, SCC was also made using aggregate mixtures in which the Natural coarse aggregate (NCA) was replaced with CRCA at 0% and 100 % (of the total coarse aggregate content). It has also been observed with the Mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP) and Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis that the incorporation of fly ash in SCC mixtures containing different contents of CRCA, resulted in the production of SCC-CRCA mixtures, with higher/comparable performance to that of control SCC mixture. The test results indicated that the SCC mixtures SCC mixtures exhibited very low chloride ion permeability at 28 days, lower carbonation depth. SCC made with CRCA up to 45% replacement can be used for structural concrete which is higher than that recommended in Indian specification (20 %) for normal concrete.

Background: Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection is a serious public health issue that must be addressed. Aim: The goal of this study was to investigate the correlation between serological status for hepatitis Be antigen (HBeAg)/anti-HBe, serum transaminase levels, and serum HBV-DNA in patients with chronic HBV infection. Methods: A retrospective observational study with 620 patients with persistent HBV infection (mean age, 36.35 years; 506 men) was conducted. Abstract In light of population growth and climate change, groundwater is one of the most important water resources globally. Groundwater is crucial for sustaining many vital sectors in Syria, including industrial and agricultural sectors. However, groundwater exploitation has significantly escalated to meet different water needs especially in the post-war period and the earthquake disaster. Therefore, the goal was this study delineation of the groundwater potential zones (GPZs) by integrating the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) method in a geographic information systems (GIS) within the AlAlqerdaha river basin in western Syria. In this study, ten criteria were used to map the spatial distribution of GPZs, including slope, geomorphology, drainage density, land use/land cover (LU/LC), lineament density, lithology, rainfall, soil, curvature and topographic wetness index (TWI). GPZs map was validated by using the location of 74 wells and the Receiver Operating Characteristic Curve (ROC). The findings suggest that the study area is divided into five GPZs: very low, 21.39 km2 (10.87%); low, 52.45 km2 (26.65%); moderate, 65.64 km2 (33.35%); high, 40.45 km2 (20.55%) and very high, 16.90 km2 (8.58%). High and very high zones mainly corresponded to the western regions of the study area. The conducted spatial modeling indicated that the AHP-based GPZs map showed a remarkably acceptable correlation with wells locations (AUC = 87.7%, n = 74), demonstrating the precision of the AHP–GIS as a rating method. The results of this study provide objective and constructive outputs that can help decision-makers to optimally manage groundwater resources in the post-war phase in Syria.

A hardware architecture is presented to decode (N, K) polar codes based on a low-density parity-check code-like decoding method. By applying suitable pruning techniques to the dense graph of the polar code, the decoder architectures are optimized using fewer check nodes (CN) and variable nodes (VN). Pipelining is introduced in the CN and VN architectures, reducing the critical path delay. Latency is reduced further by a fully parallelized, singlestage architecture compared with the log N stages in the conventional belief propagation (BP) decoder. The designed decoder for short-to-intermediate code lengths was implemented using the Virtex-7 field-programmable gate array (FPGA). It achieved a throughput of 2.44 Gbps, which is four times and 1.4 times higher than those of the fast-simplified successive cancellation and combinational decoders, respectively. The proposed decoder for the (1024, 512) polar code yielded a negligible bit error rate of 10^-4 at 2.7 Eb/No (dB). It converged faster than the BP decoding scheme on a dense paritycheck matrix. Moreover, the proposed decoder is also implemented using the Xilinx ultra-scale FPGA and verified with the fifth generation new radio physical downlink control channel specification. The superior errorcorrecting performance and better hardware efficiency makes our decoder a suitable alternative to the successive cancellation list decoders used in 5G wireless communication.

Abstract Evapotranspiration plays a pivotal role in the hydrological cycle. It is essential to develop an accurate computational model for predicting reference evapotranspiration (RET) for agricultural and hydrological applications, especially for the management of irrigation systems, allocation of water resources, assessments of utilization and demand and water use allocations in rural and urban areas. The limitation of climatic data to estimate RET restricted the use of standard Penman–Monteith method recommended by food and agriculture organization (FAO-PM56). Therefore, the current study used climatic data such as minimum, maximum and mean air temperature (T max, Tmin, T mean), mean relative humidity (RHmean), wind speed (U) and sunshine hours (N) to predict RET using gene expression programming (GEP) technique. In this study, a total of 17 different input meteorological combinations were used to develop RET models. The obtained results of each GEP model are compared with FAO-PM56 to evaluate its performance in both training and testing periods. The GEP-13 model (T max, T min, RHmean, U) showed the lowest errors (RMSE, MAE) and highest efficiencies (R 2, NSE) in semi-arid (Faisalabad and Peshawar) and humid (Skardu) conditions while GEP-11 and GEP-12 perform best in arid (Multan, Jacobabad) conditions during training period. However, GEP-11 in Multan and Jacobabad, GEP-7 in Faisalabad, GEP-1 in Peshawar, GEP-13 in Islamabad and Skardu outperformed in testing period. In testing phase, the GEP models R 2 values reach 0.99, RMSE values ranged from 0.27 to 2.65, MAE values from 0.21 to 1.85 and NSE values from 0.18 to 0.99. The study findings indicate that GEP is effective in predicting RET when there are minimal climatic data. Additionally, the mean relative humidity was identified as the most relevant factor across all climatic conditions. The findings of this study may be used to the planning and management of water resources in practical situations, as they demonstrate the impact of input variables on the RET associated with different climatic conditions.

Abstract The quantum communication channel is considered to be eavesdropped when the signal Quantum Bit Error Rate (QBER) exceeds a defined theoretical limit and is thus considered a figure of merit parameter for assessing the security of a quantum channel. This work presents a general mathematical model considering device imperfections and various sources of errors for estimating signal QBER in polarisation encoded satellite‐based QKD systems. QBER performance for satellite‐to‐ground downlink scenarios has been investigated for multiple sky brightness conditions (day time and night time operations), two operating wavebands: 800 and 1550 nm as well as for different quantum transmitter and quantum receiver architectures. Further, a novel QBER estimation analysis for inter‐satellite QKD links has also been presented. The estimation results obtained from the developed model have been validated against and found in good agreement with the measured results of the only reported satellite‐to‐ground QKD experiments till date. The presented QBER modelling and analysis will aid in system engineering and efficient design of future satellite‐based QKD systems.

Optimum soil moisture and high crop residue return (RR) can increase the active pool of soil organic carbon and nitrogen, thus modulating the magnitude of greenhouse gas (GHG) fluxes. To determine the effect of soil moisture on the threshold level of RR for the wheat production system, we analyzed the relationship between GHG fluxes and RR at four levels, namely 0, 5, 10, and 15 Mg ha−1 (R0, R5, R10, and R15) under two soil moisture content (80% FC and 100% FC) and three levels of nutrient management (NS0: no nutrient; NS1, NS2= 3x NS1). Nutrient input (N and P) in NS1 balanced the residue C/nutrient stoichiometry to achieve 30% stabilization of the residue C input in RR (R5). All RR treatments (cf. R0) were found to significantly reduce N2O emission in moderate soil moisture content (80% FC) by 22–56% across nutrient management due to enhanced soil C mineralization, microbial biomass carbon, and N immobilization. However, averaged across nutrient management, a linear increase in N2O emission was observed with increasing RR under 100% FC soil moisture. A significant decrease in CH4 emission by ca. 46% in most RR treatments was observed in 100% FC compared with the R0. The N2O emission was negatively correlated (p = 0.8) to management variables (RR rate, nitrogen (N) input rate, soil moisture, and nutrient stoichiometry of C: N) and post-incubation soil properties (SMBC and NO3-N) in Alfisols. This study demonstrated that the mechanisms responsible for RR effects on soil N2O, CH4 fluxes, and carbon mineralization depend on soil moisture and nutrient management, shifting the nutrient stoichiometry of residue C: N: P.

The utilization of plant-derived chemicals with anti-diabetic properties is widely promoted for its advantageous tactics in managing diabetes, as they are cost-effective and have minimal or no adverse effects. Therefore, this work investigates the medicinal plant Jasminum officinale L. leaves by extraction and bio-guided fractionation. The ethyl acetate fraction showed a higher yield of 36.4 %. A phytochemical test on Jasminum officinale confirmed flavonoids, saponins, phenols, and tannins. The highest total phenol and flavonoid contents in the ethyl acetate fraction of J. officinale are 103.01 ± 1.1 mg GAE/g and 80.29 ± 1.03 mg QUE/ value found in methanol crude extract. Furthermore, HPTLC analysis of the ethyl acetate fraction detected the existence of flavonoids (kaempferol) and phenols (gallic acid, quercetin, and rutin). The compounds detected at the greatest concentrations in the LC-M/MS analysis of the ethyl acetate fraction were cirsiliol, kaempferol, and 2-tridecanone. Additionally, J. officinale (IC50 33.845 ± 1.09 μg/mL) demonstrated the highest DPPH scavenging activity in EAF like that of ascorbic acid (IC50 22.27 ± 0.96 μg/mL). Also, in the FRAP assay, the IC50 of this fraction is 15.14 ± 0.25 μM Fe equivalents. In the range of alpha-amylase deactivating action, from 13.25 % to 74.51 %, and IC50 value (47.40 ± 0.29 μg/mL) was significantly higher in the ethyl acetate fraction of J. officinale leaf extract. Moreover, J. officinale leaf extract had a substantially higher retention of glucose level (23.92 ± 0.85 % to 87.21 ± 0.6 %), significantly higher anti-inflammatory activity with the lowest IC50 value (66.00 ± 1.84), and lipid peroxidation (IC50 value 34.67 ± 1.69) by utilizing egg yolk as a substrate for lipids. Overall, the study revealed that J. officinale has considerable anti-diabetic characteristics. However, further comprehensive research is necessary to ascertain the medicinal purposes of J. officinale and its chemical components, pharmacological effects, and clinical uses.

Introduction: Intramuscular hemangiomas (IMH) are rare benign vascular tumors. They can occur anywhere in the body but are more common in the head and neck. Their location in the muscles of the abdominal wall is uncommon. Case presentation: A 14-year-old girl presented with 5 months of progressive swelling on the right side of her abdomen followed by intermittent pain. On examination, a solitary mass with ill-defined borders was noted fixed to the subcutaneous tissue in the right lumbar quadrant. After elevating the right leg, the swelling became more prominent. Doppler ultrasonography revealed a mixed echogenic mass in the subcutaneous plane of the anterior abdominal wall of the right lumbar region. Magnetic resonance imaging of abdomen was suggestive of hemangioma, and the patient underwent surgical excision. Histopathological examination confirmed the diagnosis of capillary hemangioma. During follow-up at 3 and 6 months, the patient did not present with recurrence and was healthy. Conclusion: Although IMH is a rare soft-tissue tumor, it should be considered when diagnosing symptomatic intramuscular swelling.

Bridelia retusa is a medicinal plant widely used to treat diabetes by ethnic populations worldwide, has been subjected to GC–MS-based profiling for the bark and fruit and identified 96 phytochemicals using ethyl acetate and methanol solvents. The DPPH antioxidant assay recorded that methanolic fruit extract had a maximum antioxidant activity of 83.01 % (IC50-103.03 µg/ml). The α-amylase inhibition activity was found maximum in ethyl acetate bark extract with 76.34 % (127.37 µg/ml), while methanolic fruit extract exhibited the highest α-glucosidase inhibition activity with 86.18 % (106.15 µg/ml). Subsequently, we have compared the antidiabetic potential for 3 pharmacologically significant bioactive constituents friedelin, imidazole & sylvestrene through docking and drug likeliness study and found friedelin has a maximum binding affinity with different protein targets followed by sylvestrene and is most suitable candidate for drug development for hyperglycemia. Molecular dynamics simulations revealed friedelin as the most stable binder to anti-diabetic target proteins, with notable structural insights provided by RMSD, RMSF, SASA, and PCA analyses. MM-PBSA calculations emphasized the significance of various energies with the α-amylase-Friedelin complex exhibiting the highest binding energy.

Developing successful mitigation strategies for greenhouse gases (GHGs) from crop residue returned to the soil can be difficult due to an incomplete understanding of factors controlling their magnitude and direction. Therefore, this study investigates the effects of varying levels of wheat residue (WR) and nutrient management on GHGs emissions (CO2, N2O, and CH4) across three soil types: Alfisol, Vertisol, and Inceptisol. A combination of laboratory-based measurements and a variety of data analysis techniques was used to assess the GHG responses under four levels of WR inputs (0, 5, 10, and 15 Mg/ha; WR0, WR5, WR10, and WR15) and three levels of nutrient (NP0: no nutrient, NP1: nutrients (N and P) were added to balance the residue C/nutrient stoichiometry of C/N/P= 100: 8.3: 2.0 to achieve 30% stabilization of added residue C input at 5 Mg/ha (R5), and NP2: 3 × NP1). The results of this study clearly showed that averaged across residue and nutrient input, Inceptisol showed negative N2O flux, suggesting consumption which was supported by its high legacy phosphorus (19.7 mg kg⁻1), elevated pH (8.49), and lower clay content (13%), which reduced microbial activity, as indicated by lower microbial biomass carbon (MBC) and alkaline phosphatase (Alk-P) levels. N2O emissions were more responsive to nutrient inputs, particularly in Vertisol under high WR (15 Mg/ha) input, while CH4 fluxes were significantly reduced under high residue inputs, especially in Vertisol and Inceptisol. Alfisol exhibited the highest total carbon mineralization and GWP, with cumulative GWP being 1.2 times higher than Vertisol and 1.4 times higher than Inceptisol across residue and nutrient input. The partial least square (PLS) regression revealed that anthropogenic factors significantly influenced CO2 and N2O fluxes more than CH4. The anthropogenic drivers contributed 62% and 44% of the variance explained for N2O and CH4 responses. Our study proves that different biogeochemical mechanisms operate simultaneously depending on the stoichiometry of residue C and nutrients influencing soil GHG responses. Our findings provide insight into the relative contribution of anthropogenic and natural drivers to agricultural GHG emissions, which are relevant for developing process-based models and addressing the broader challenge of climate change mitigation through crop residue management.

BackgroundMental health is crucial for overall well-being, but rural areas often face difficulties in accessing mental health services and understanding psychiatric disorders.AimThis study aimed to address these issues by assessing the prevalence of psychiatric disorders among adults in rural Jammu and examining how socio-cultural and demographic factors are related to these disorders.MethodsA sample of 1,016 adults from rural Jammu was surveyed using the Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview (MINI). Data were collected through house-to-house visits conducted by trained investigators. Descriptive and inferential statistics, including frequency distribution and odds ratio, were employed to analyze the data respectively.ResultsOverall, 20.67% of the participants had a psychiatric disorder. Alcohol dependence was the most common condition, affecting 12.30% of the individuals, followed by generalized anxiety disorder at 3.14%. The study found significant associations between psychiatric disorders and several factors. Specifically, older people were more likely to have psychiatric disorders, with an odds ratio of 3.7 [2.07-6.59]. Married individuals also had a higher likelihood of experiencing psychiatric disorders (OR: 2.3 [1.55-3.54]). Those with less schooling were at an increased risk, with an odds ratio of 7.77 [2.31-26.09], and people from lower socioeconomic backgrounds were more likely to have these disorders as well (OR: 5.1 [2.4-10.5]).Discussion and conclusionThe findings underscore the complex association between socio-demographic factors and mental health outcomes in rural areas of Jammu region. Addressing these disparities requires targeted interventions and policies that account for the unique socio-cultural contexts of rural populations. By understanding the specific challenges faced by these communities, policymakers and healthcare providers can develop more effective strategies to enhance mental health services and promote well-being.

The increasing emphasis on fostering agri-entrepreneurship in emerging economies is based on the understanding that it holds the potential to drive economic growth and sustainable development. Its impact transcends mere financial indicators, influencing facets such as innovation, job creation, and societal empowerment. This perspective is also relevant in the Indian context, where organizations promoting agri-entrepreneurship often encounter challenges. This study was carried out to identify the constraints faced by various stakeholders involved in providing and accessing entrepreneurial support, also strategizing solutions for the identified bottlenecks. Data was gathered through structured interviews involving about 200 agri-entrepreneurs and 43 extension professionals in selected states. Constraints as well as strategies in the promotion of agri-entrepreneurship were systematically categorized into four dimensions viz. administrative, financial, technical, and socio-cultural which were further ranked through Garett’s ranking method and Analytical Hierarchy Process. Financial and administrative constraints, including lack of priority lending, favoritism, and delays in fund release, emerged as significant hurdles for sustainable entrepreneurship development, other constraints among technical and socio-cultural domains include lack of prototype testing facility and orientation toward conventional ventures, respectively. Experts suggested strategies like post program funding support, timely disbursement of seed funding and transparency in pitch evaluation for mitigating the challenges. The overall consistency ratio of AHP matrix indicates a high level of agreement in suggestions among experts. Incorporating the suggestions through policy changes is expected to promote a sustainable food value chain thereby promoting sustainable agri-entrepreneurship.

This study investigates the Quincke rolling phenomenon of snowman-shaped colloidal particles. These chiral rollers exhibit individual and collective dynamic states that depend upon the population and driving field strength. In addition to the previously identified dynamic states, such as spinning and vortex states, we identify the standing and bounded motion of the particles. The bounded motion involves the confined orbiting of particles around the center of mass due to hydrodynamic interactions at low particle area fractions. Our findings provide valuable insights into the behavior of active systems and the fabrication of active materials, emphasizing emergent order and adaptability as key guiding principles.

IntroductionGlobally, one in every six people will be elderly by 2030. In Nepal, there has been a notable rise in the aging and elderly. Addressing the healthcare needs of them is crucial. Despite the different efforts to advocate for healthy aging, various factors continue to limit this process. This paper aims to explore the utilization of healthcare services among the elderly population and uncover influences on the ability to access these services.MethodA mixed-method community-based study was conducted in Bihadi Rural Municipality of Parbat, Nepal. The quantitative segment involved interviews with 355 individuals aged ≥60 years, while 18 respondents were enlisted for in-depth interviews. We used descriptive statistics, chi-square test, and logistic regression in quantitative analysis. Similarly, content and thematic analysis were performed in the qualitative component.ResultsThis study reported that health service utilization among the respondents was 65.4%. Among the factors ethnicity (OR 3.728, 95% CI 1.062–15.887), not good health status (OR 2.943, 95% CI 1.15–8.046), bus as means of transportation (OR 8.397, 95% CI 1.587–55.091) had higher odds whereas government hospital (OR 0.046, 95% CI 0.009–0.193), not always available health staffs (OR 0.375, 95% CI 0.147–0.931), not sufficient medicine (OR 0.372, 95% CI 0.143–0.924), not available medicine (OR 0.014, 95% CI 0.002–0.068) had lower odds for health service utilization. Other factors identified from qualitative components include long waiting times, insufficient medicine, lack of trained health personnel, financial capacity, low utilization of health insurance, distance, and support from family members.ConclusionsNonetheless, a portion of the elderly remained excluded from mainstream of healthcare services. A combination of social, healthcare-related, and individual factors influences the utilization of healthcare services. To ensure elderly-friendly services, prioritize geriatric care training, secure medication availability, and establish a dedicated health insurance program for them. In the current federal context, localizing evidence-based, innovative strategies to address the healthcare needs of the elderly is crucial.

Maize-based crop systems are promoted in large scale in South Asia because they are more sustainable and efficient than rice-based systems. In the present study, using two combinations of crop residue management practices (CRM) with four precision nitrogen (N) management (PNM) systems, we assessed the impacts on soil physicochemical characteristics [soil organic carbon (SOC), bulk density (BD), soil penetration resistance (PR)] and crop yields in 6 years old continuous zero tillage (ZT) practices under maize-wheat-mungbean cropping system in a sandy loam soil of northwestern India. The highest SOC (5.73 g/kg) was observed in Zero Tillage with Residue Retention (ZT + R) plots. Zero-tillage with residue retention (ZT + R) significantly reduced the bulk density over the zero-tillage with no residue retention (ZT-R) across the soil depth. The bulk density in ZT + R was 6.5 and 10.7% lower at 0–15 cm and 15–30 cm soil depth, respectively, than under ZT-R. The penetration resistance (PR) was significantly lower in ZT + R than in ZT-R across the soil depth. Soil organic carbon (SOC) in ZT + R was 7.4% higher at 0–15 cm depth and 11.9% higher at 15–30 cm depth than under ZT-R treatment. Among PNM treatments, the sequence of treatments in SOC content was 50%N + Green Seeker (GS) >33%N + GS > RDN > 70%N + GS. The system productivity (maize equivalent yield) under ZT + R in combination with 50%BN + GS was 15.0% higher than crops grown under ZT-R with RDN. The wheat equivalent yield under the ZT + R treatment is found to be higher (5.97) in the 50%BN + GS, which was 18% higher than the recommended dose of nitrogen treatment (5.04) and 28% higher than the 70%BN + GS treatment (4.68). Results demonstrated that plots with residue retention performed better, showing a 10% increase in system productivity. The study concludes that a ZT-based system with maize-based crop rotations (MWMb) with crop residue retention and precision nitrogen management can improve soil properties and system productivity in northwestern India.
