Prof. Dr. Nur Balkan-Atlı was one of the pioneers in the prehistory of Turkey. She had a vast field experience both in the Paleolithic and Neolithic archaeology of Anatolia. She was a specialist in lithic technologies of the Neolithic period and she focused her research on the obsidian. One of her main research interests was the obsidian trade during the Neolithic. Gürgürbaba Tepesi Doğu Anadolu’da, Van ilinde yer alan bir obsidiyen kaynağıdır. Bu tepenin günümüz deniz seviyesinden yüksekliği yaklaşık 2200 metredir. Gerçekleştirilen araştırmalar Alt ve Orta Paleolitik ve ayrıca olasılıkla Kalkolitik Dönemlere ait çok sayıda buluntu yeri açığa çıkarmıştır. Bunların tamamı obsidiyen hammaddeler ile yakından ilişkilidir. Paleolitik buluntu yerleri kalın bir yamaç molozu tarafından örtülmüş olduğu için sadece yeni aşınmış akaçlarda tespit edilmiştir. Paleolitik buluntuların çoğu iyi korunmuştur ve hem jeolojik hem arkeolojik olarak in situ’dur, Gürgürbaba Hill is an obsidian source located in Van province in Eastern Anatolia. Its altitude is approximately 2200 m above the modern sea level. Research in this area has revealed many Lower and Middle Paleolithic and also possibly Chalcholithic findspots. All these are in close relationship with the obsidian raw material. The Paleolithic findspots were covered by a thick layer of slopewash for this reason they could only be found in the recently eroded drainages. Most of the Paleolithic finds are very well preserved and in situ both geologically and archaeologically.

This research is aimed to revealfossil humans and to understand the dispersals of early hominins from Africa toEurasia. It has been understood that the province of Van is located at anarchaeologically key position. Geographically, the Eastern Anatolia is acritically important natural land bridge to Eurasia in the Paleolithic periodin terms of the study of migration movements of early hominins from EasternAnatolia to Eurasia or vice versa. In this context, a large number of stonetools (lithic artifacts) are dated to the Paleolithic Period, those have beenidentified during the researches carried out in Van Province. The research hasbeen concentrated at Gürgürbaba Hill in the north of Ulupamir Village of Ercişdistrict. In this project, we have analyzed the technological and typologicalfeatures of the lithic remains belonging to Palaeolithic which were revealedduring the intensive survey of Gürgürbaba Tepesi and were obtained importantresults with OSL dating techniques, regarding the layers of the site.Gürgürbaba Tepesi has been identified as a late Acheulian assemblage thatincludes hand axes, large flakes and blades, large cutting tools, Levallois andnon-Levallois products, plain flakes and blades. As a result, it is understoodthat the site has been settled by the Palaeolithic humans from the middle ofthe Middle Pleistocene (Oxygen isotope 12). The lithic remains from GürgürbabaTepesi show similar features with the assemblages from the Levant and southernCaucasus in the late Acheulian period., Anadolu’daki fosil insanvarlığını ve insanların Afrika’dan Avrasya’ya yayılım alanlarını ortaya koymayayönelik gerçekleştirilen araştırmada, Van İlinin arkeolojik açıdan kilit birnoktada yer aldığı bilimsel anlamda da elde edilen bulgularla ortayakonulmuştur. Coğrafi olarak Doğu Anadolu Bölgesi, Avrasya’ya açılan doğal birkara köprüsüdür ve Paleolitik dönemlerde insanların Doğu Anadolu’dan Avrasya’yaveya tam tersi yönde olan göç hareketlerinin incelenmesi açısından kritik biröneme sahiptir. Bu kapsamda Van İlinde gerçekleştirilen araştırmalardaErciş’in, Ulupamir Köyü’nün hemen kuzeyinde yer alan ve Gürgürbaba Tepesi olarakisimlendirilen alanda Paleolitik Çağ’a ait çok sayıda yontmataş alet tespitedilmiştir. Bu proje kapsamında Gürgürbaba Tepesi buluntu alanında yoğun yüzeyaraştırması sonucunda tespit edilen ve Paleolitik Döneme tarihlenenbuluntuların teknolojik ve tipolojik özellikleri ortaya çıkarılmış ve OSLtarihlendirme teknikleriyle buluntu alanının tabakalarına ilişkin önemlisonuçlar elde edilmiştir. Gürgürbaba Tepesinin Paleolitik dönem kalıntılarıarasında el baltaları, iri yonga ve dilgileri, iri kesici aletleri, Levalloisolan ve olmayan yongalama ürünleri, düz yonga ve dilgi kalıntılarıylateknolojik olarak Alt Paleolitik dönemin geç Acheulian dönemine ait olduğunutespit edilmiştir. Sonuç olarak bu kanıtlar ışığında, Gürgürbaba Tepesi’ninOrta Pleistosen dönemin ortalarından itibaren (Oksijen izotop 12) Paleolitikdönem insanları tarafından iskan edildiği düşünülmektedir. Buradatespit edilen yontmataş aletlerin, Geç Acheulian dönemde Levant ve GüneyKafkasya’daki örneklere benzer olduğu ortaya çıkarılmıştır.

Recent surveys led by Ege University in the Karaburun Peninsula discovered multiple prehistoric sites. This article introduces one of the Neolithic sites, Kömür Burnu, in this marginal zone of coastal western Anatolia. The site offered various advantages to early farmer-herders, including freshwater and basalt sources as well as proximity to agricultural lands, forested areas and marine resources. The material culture suggests that a local west Anatolian community lived here around 6200–6000 cal BC. P-XRF characterisation of obsidian pieces from Kömür Burnu revealed that they were acquired from two geographically distant sources (Melos-Adamas and Göllüdag). These constitute the first evidence of the participation of Karaburun early farmer-herders in exchange networks of Neolithic Anatolia and the Aegean. Notably, the different technological features of these pieces fit well with the dual obsidian mobility model suggested by Marina Mili? for the western Anatolian Neolithic. © Univerza v Ljubljani. Karaburun Arkeolojik Yüzey Araştırması 2015-2017 yıllarında Kömür Burnu’nda arazi çalışmaları ger- çekleştirmiştir. Bu makale söz konusu çalışmaların sonuçlarını sunmaktadır. Kömür Burnu, çok dönemli bir arkeolojik alan olarak Paleolitik, Neolitik, Kalkolitik, Tunç Çağı ve Roma dönemlerine ait kalıntılar ve malzemeler barındırmaktadır. Bu arkeolojik alan kıyı Batı Anadolu’da keşfedilmiş ilk in situ Paleolitik buluntu alanı olma özelliğine sahiptir. Alandaki bazalt yontma taş aletler iki yüzeyli formlar ve Levallois tekniğinin kullanımıyla karak- terize olmakta ve bu endüstri olasılıkla geç Alt Paleolitik veya erken Orta Paleolitik’e tarihlenmektedir. Alanda daha sonra MÖ 7. binyılın sonuna ait bir Neolitik Dönem yamaç yerleşimi kurulmuştur. Kömür Burnu, Karaburun Yarımadası’nda bilinen tek Neolitik Dönem yerleşim alanıdır ve bu özelliğiyle yarıma- dadaki Neolitik Dönem materyal kültürü üzerine ilk verileri bize sağlaması açısından önem taşır. Alanda ayrıca MÖ 2. binyıla ait yerel tipte ve Miken tipinde çanak çömlekler ele geçmiştir. Stratejik konumu, tatlı su kaynaklarına yakınlığı, bazalt hammaddenin erişilebilirliği ve deniz ürünlerinin varlığı nedeniyle Kömür Burnu çağlar boyunca toplumlar tarafından tercih edilen önemli bir yerleşim alanı olmuştur., The Karaburun Archaeological Survey Project conducted fieldwork at the site of Kömür Burnu in three seasons between 2015-2017. This paper is a presentation of this work. Kömür Burnu is a multi-component site with evidence from the Paleolithic, Neolithic, Chalcolithic, Late Bronze Age and Roman periods. It represents the first geologically in situ Paleolithic site in coastal western Turkey. the basalt industry in- cludes bifacial forms and the use of Levallois technique, indicating a probable late Lower or early Middle Paleolithic date for the hominin activity. the site was later occupied by early farmer-herders, possibly in the late 7th millennium BC. Kömür Burnu is the only known Neolithic site in Karaburun Peninsula. As such, it presents the first tangible evidence from Neolithic groups in this part of western Anatolia. the site also yielded a good collection of second millennium BC ceramics, along with few possible Mycenaean pieces. It appears that Kömür Burnu, with its strategic location and proximity to fresh water, marine re- sources and basalt offered prehistoric groups of multiple periods many advantages .

Günümüzde Marmara Denizi Balkan ve Anadolu yarımadalarını birbirinden ayırmaktadır. Ancak bu deniz kalıcı bir sınır değildir. Pleyistosen boyunca gerçekleşmiş deniz seviyesi değişiklerine bağlı olarak Marmara Denizi en azından birkaç kez bir tatlı su gölüne dönüşmüş, etrafındaki karasal alanlar Anadolu ve Balkanlar arasında bir kara köprüsü oluşturacak şekilde genişlemiştir. Bu kara köprüsü Alt Paleolitik homininlerin Avrupa'ya yayılımında en olası rotalardan bir tanesidir. Bu tezin konusu da bu rotanın en eski kullanımıyla ilgili kanıtları derlemek, bu bölgenin bir rota olup olmadığını tespit etmektir.Yarımburgaz Mağarası bölgede kazılmış en önemli Paleolitik buluntu yeridir. Bu mağaradaki arkeolojik buluntular Orta Pleyistosen'in ortasındaki soğuk bir döneme tarihlenmiştir. Yarımburgaz Mağarası buluntu topluluğu esas olarak düzeltili ve düzeltisiz yongalardan oluşur. Doğu Trakya'daki (Marmara Denizi kuzeyi) yüzey araştırmaları Alt Paleolitik boyunca yoğun bir iskânın olduğunu göstermiştir, son yıllarda pek çok Alt Paleolitik buluntu yeri tespit edilmiştir. Bu buluntu yerlerindeki buluntu toplulukları kuvars ve kuvarsit çaytaşlarından yapılmış çekirdek aletlerin (satır ve kıyıcılar) baskınlığı ile tanımlanır. Yarımburgaz buluntu topluluğunda çekirdek aletlerin yüzdesi çok fazla olmadığından bunlar Yarımburgaz'dan daha eskiye tarihlenebilir.Kuzey kısmın aksine, Marmara Denizi'nin güneyinde Alt Paleolitik buluntu yerleri çok sayıda değildir ve buluntu toplulukları yüksek oranlarda yongalarla birlikte az sayıda iki yüzeyli aletleri de içerir. Bu, iki alanın farklı jeomorfolojik geçmişlerinden kaynaklanmıyorsa, Marmara Denizi çevresinde iki değişik tekno- kültürel grubun varlığının bir sonucudur. Ancak, teknolojik ve tipolojik analizler haricinde, bu her iki alandaki hiçbir buluntu yerinden radyometrik tarihler elde etmek mümkün olmamıştır.Buluntu topluluklarını tarihlendirmenin güçlüğüne karşın, Marmara Denizi çevresindeki, Anadolu ve Balkanların bir araya geldiği bu bölge, Alt Paleolitik homininlerin teknolojik uyum süreçlerini ve yayılımlarını anlamak için çok fazla bilgi sunar. Today Marmara Sea separates Balkan and Anatolian peninsulas from each other. However it does not constitute a permanent border. Due to sea level changes during the Pleistocene, the Marmara Sea became a fresh water lake at least a several times and terrestrial areas around it were expanded, creating a land-bridge between Anatolia and Balkans. This land bridge is one of the most probable routes for Lower Paleolithic hominins to disperse through Europe. The scope of this dissertation is to evaluate evidences about the earliest use of this route and to determine its use as a route or not.Yarımburgaz Cave is the most important excavated Paleolithic site in this region. Archaeological remains in this cave were dated to a cold period in the middle of the Middle Pleistocene. Assemblage of the Yarımburgaz Cave consists mainly flakes, retouched and non-retouched. Surveys in Eastern Thrace (north of the Marmara Sea) revealed a dense occupation during the Lower Paleolithic; many Lower Paleolithic sites have been discovered in recent years. All of the assemblages of these sites are characterized in the dominance of core tools (choppers and chopping tools) made on quartz and quartzite pebbles. This might indicate earlier industries than the Yarımburgaz assemblage since percentage of core tools at Yarımburgaz are not very high.In the south of the Marmara Sea, in contrast to the northern part, Lower Paleolithic sites are not numerous and assemblages include low number of bifacial tools along with high percentages of flakes. If it is not the result of different geomorphological histories of two areas, this might be the result of the existence two different techno-cultural groups around Marmara Sea. However, except the technological and typological analyses, it has not been possible to obtain radiometric dates from any of these surface sites at both areas.Despite the difficulty of dating the assemblages, this region around Marmara Sea where Anatolia and the Balkans come together, offers much to understand technological adaptations and dispersals of Lower Paleolithic hominins. 315

Recent technological advances enabling quick and effective dissemination of information on social media have made perceptions and attitudes of an electorate towards policy actions more sensitive. This sensitivity shapes the eminent link between domestic and foreign policies, especially in democracies. During the past fifteen years, foreign and domestic policy nexus in Turkey has become more prominent and critical. Many scholars have also appreciated the increasing importance of public opinion in Turkish foreign policy. This study contributes to the literature by examining the public opinion-Turkish foreign policy nexus using new methodology. Instead of conducting surveys, the study employs an algorithm, which groups tweets in Turkish with similar “sentiments.” With this innovative design, the study addresses two recently popular topics in Turkish political studies, foreign-domestic policy linkage and the role of social media in Turkish politics, via a recent political event – the siege of Kobane. The findings show that arising perceptions and attitudes in Twitter are organized over political party/ideological stance dimensions. -- Gelişen teknolojinin haber ve bilgi paylaşımını hızlı ve etkin hale getirmesi seçmen kitlelerinin algı ve tutumlarını, karar alıcıların politikalarına karşı daha hassas hale getirmiştir. Bu hassasiyet özellikle demokrasilerde belirginleşen iç ve dış politika arasındaki bağlantıyı farklı bir boyuta taşımıştır. Son on beş yılda Türk dış politikasının iç siyaset ile bağıntısı daha görünür ve önemli hale gelmiş; bu süreçte dış politika yapımında kamuoyu algı ve tutumlarının artan önemi akademik çalışmalara yansımıştır. Bu çalışma, bireylerin Türk dış politikasına ilişkin algı ve tutumlarını inceleyen yazına katkıda bulunmayı amaçlamakta, bunun için Twitter’da paylaşılan Türkçe metinlerin benzer “hissiyatta” olanlarını gruplamayı mümkün kılan bir bilgisayar algoritması kullanmaktadır. Bu çalışma ile Türkiye siyasi araştırmalarındaki en güncel konulardan ikisi, yani iç-dış politika bağlantısı ile siyasette sosyal medyanın rolü, ilişkilendirilmektedir. İnceleme ile, yakın dönemde Türk dış politikasını meşgul eden Kobani konusunda Twitter’da oluşan algı ve tutumların parti/ideolojik aidiyet düzlemi üzerinden örgütlendiğini göstermiştir.

Twitter her geçen gün daha da büyüyen, insanların fikir ve düşüncelerinin olduğu bir sosyal platform. Bu platformda her gün kullanıcılar tarafından üretilen içerik, verinin hacmi, düzensizliği ve hızı nedeniyle işlemesi çok zor bir veriye ama bir o kadar da değerli bir veriye dönüşmektedir. 2010 verilerine göre günde 55 milyon tweet üretilirken şu anda bu sayı ikiye katlanmıştır. Bu tezde twitter platformunda kullanıcılar tarafından üretilen verinin işlenebilmesi ve anlaşılabilmesi için sunduğumuz algoritmaları anlatıyor olacağız.Daha sonra bu algoritmaların tweetler üzerinde nasıl kullanılacağını, çalışmalardan ne gibi sonuçlar çıkarılabileceğini ve ne tür uygulamalar için fayda sağlayabileceğini gösteriyor olacağız. Bahsettiğimiz metodu kullanarak Twitter üzerinde `Robot` hesapları bulma ve tüm verinin özetini çok daha az tweet ile temsil edebilme gibi sorunları da nasıl çözdüğümüzü anlatıyor olacağız. Twitter is an ever growing social platform that is full of ideas and opinions. Huge amount of data is produced daily that is usually too cumbersome to process and mine for the opinions of individuals. As of 2010, 55 million tweets are sent daily and the number is doubled by now. Also twitter data is not structured as a text based information source, considering the lack of structure of the data along with its huge volume, it is nearly impossible to have a healthy summarization of all the ideas and opinions at real time. Therefore in this work we propose a set of algorithms to cluster relevant tweets and similar tweets talking about the same concept on twitter domain.We demonstrate and explain how this information can be used on tweets. As a side benefit we also use these algorithms to detect bots or spammer accounts on twitter since we place such tweets to the same clusters. We show that by transforming twitter data into a clustered structure we are able to overcome problems such as detecting bots and providing a neat summary of the data. these are solvable by transforming the unstructured data environment of twitter to a structured data environment by forming clusters and buckets over the data feed. Another interesting observation we made is that the clusters we form follow the Pareto principle therefore by inspecting only 20% of the clusters we can cover 80% of the whole data. 54
