Traditional processor architectures utilize an external DRAM for data storage, while they also operate under worst-case timing constraints. Such designs are heavily constrained by the delay costs of the data transfer between the core pipeline and the DRAM, and they are incapable of exploiting the timing variations of their pipeline stages. In this work, we focus on a near-data processing methodology combined with a novel timing analysis technique that enables the adaptive frequency scaling of the core clock and boosts the performance of low-power designs. We propose a near-data processing and better-than-worst-case co-design methodology to efficiently move the instruction execution to the DRAM side and, at the same time, to allow the pipeline to operate at higher clock frequencies compared to the worst-case approach. To this end, we develop a timing analysis technique, which evaluates the timing requirements of individual instructions and we dynamically scale the clock frequency, according to the instructions types that currently occupy the pipeline. We evaluate the proposed methodology on six different RISC-V post-layout implementations using an HMC DRAM to enable the processing-in-memory (PIM) process. Results indicate an average speedup factor of 1.96× with a 1.6× reduction in energy consumption compared to a standard RISC-V PIM baseline implementation.

One of the most important missions all Navies have is to constantly and sufficiently monitor their area of responsibility. This task becomes more challenging when a surveillance system operates in a complex environment with high traffic of merchant and fishing vessels and the existence of many islands. Potential tactics that targets might use increase the difficulty of this task. Integrating Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) into a surveillance system that consists of ground radars and surface ships might enhance the systems capabilities and mitigate its vulnerabilities. In this study, the extremely complex maritime environment of the Aegean Sea is modeled in the Map Aware Non Uniform Automata (MANA) agent-based simulation environment to explore the effectiveness of UAVs in those conditions. The results from almost 100,000 simulated Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance missions are analyzed using descriptive statistics, ANOVA, stepwise regression, and partition trees. It was found that by integrating one or two UAVs into a traditional surveillance system, it becomes more efficient in the detection and persistent surveillance of enemies and neutral targets. The most important factors that affect the surveillance systems performance are the detection capabilities of its sensors, the communication accuracy, and the enemys counter-detection capability. Περίληψη: Η παρούσα διπλωματική εργασία πραγματεύεται τη σύγκριση αλγορίθμων εντοπισμού του σημείου μέγιστης ισχύος (Maximum Power Point Tracking, MPPT) λειτουργίας ενός φωτοβολταϊκού συστήματος. Ο κύριος στόχος όλων αυτών των τεχνικών είναι να υποχρεώνουν το φωτοβολταϊκό σύστημα να παράγει μονίμως τη μέγιστη ισχύ σε συνθήκες είτε ομοιόμορφης πρόσπτωσης ηλιακής ακτινοβολίας, είτε μερικής σκίασης. Αρχικά, παρουσιάζεται μια ολοκληρωμένη φωτοβολταϊκή μονάδα, βασισμένη στο μοντέλο μιας διόδου με τη χρήση του εργαλείου Matlab/ Simulink. Αναλύονται και ελέγχονται τέσσερις αλγόριθμοι σε συνθήκες ομοιόμορφης πρόσπτωσης ηλιακής ακτινοβολίας. Στη συνέχεια εισάγεται η έννοια του φαινομένου μερικής σκίασης και αποδεικνύεται η ανικανότητα των συμβατικών αλγορίθμων για σωστό εντοπισμό του σημείου μεγίστης ισχύος κάτω από αυτές τις συνθήκες. Για το λόγο αυτό, παρουσιάζονται πέντε μέθοδοι MPPT, οι οποίες είναι αποδοτικές στον εντοπισμό του σημείου μέγιστης ισχύος σε συνθήκες μερικής σκίασης. Τέλος, τα αποτελέσματα των προσομοιώσεων καταγράφονται λεπτομερώς, συγκρίνονται αρχικά με τις αντίστοιχες θεωρητικές τιμές και μετέπειτα μεταξύ τους.

Dissertation submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Summarization: A novel cooperative controller design for autonomous underwater vehicles is proposed, implemented and tested. The design procedure follows the basic principles of behaviour-based systems to create two different biomimetic roles, encapsulating the characteristics of an extremely rare cooperative underwater predator behaviour found in the wild: bottlenose dolphins group-hunting with division of labour and role specialization. The behaviour-based model is comprised of an hierarchy with different levels of competence, interaction and intercommunication between several behaviour modules. Two distinct, cooperating roles mimicking the driver and the non-driving or barrier members of a hunting bottlenose dolphins group emerged from the behaviour-based subsumption architecture controller designation. This behaviour-based cooperation exploits the driver’s individual capability, in fact a physical gift, of initializing, coordinating a hunting bout, detecting and herding the school of fish along with the contribution of non-driving dolphins ability to comprehend and follow the driver’s master plan and thus act as barriers for the fish trying to escape. Both roles are programmed to act upon sensory information regarding the robot’s environment, provided by a vision sensor module and an inertial measurement unit. The vision sensor detects colour light targets, classifies them according to the experimentation scenario and triggers behaviours’ interaction. The inertial measurement unit supports behaviours’ navigation and guidance necessities. Controller testing, under several simulated scenarios, proved the reliability and modular functionality of the cooperative behaviour-based model and its potential for supporting the autonomy of underwater robotic vessels commissioned in oceanography, environmental monitoring and exploration, serving tasks that can easily be seen as an extent of dolphins’ group hunting. Apart from the simulation, the same behaviour-based controller was tested in real world, with a prototype autonomous vessel. In this case, due to certain limitations of the experimental apparatus, the behaviour-based controller implemented an individual biomimetic role inspired by the real life routines of wandering, hunting, feeding, hiding and nesting exercised by underwater creatures. The individual role, behaviour-based controller was an effort to approach the sea creatures’ autonomy, observed macroscopically as an inevitable iteration and commutation of distinct behaviour modules, guided by the overall objective of staying alive. The prototype robot was commissioned as an experimentation platform for testing the framework of autonomous behaviour-based controllers and materialize the biomimetic metaphor between the maritime environment and a laboratory experimentation area of 1m3 . Περίληψη: Σκοπός της διατριβής είναι η ανάδειξη συνεργατικής συμπεριφοράς από μια ομάδα Αυτόνομων Υποβρύχιων Ρομποτικών Σκαφών. Για το λόγο αυτό σχεδιάστηκε, κατασκευάστηκε και εξελίχθηκε ένα πρωτότυπο ρομποτικό σκάφος χαμηλού κόστους. Επίσης, εγκαταστάθηκε εντός εργαστηριακού χώρου ο κατάλληλος εξοπλισμός για υποβρύχιο πειραματισμό. Η αξιοπλοΐα του πρωτότυπου σκάφους δοκιμάστηκε μεθοδικά με πειράματα που αφορούσαν τον έλεγχο της γωνίας παρέκκλισης του σκάφους και τη δυνατότητά του να ακολουθεί ένα κινούμενο φωτεινό στόχο. Ως αποτέλεσμα αυτού του πειραματισμού, αναπτύχθηκε η κατάλληλη αρχιτεκτονική λογισμικού- υλικού του ρομπότ, επί της οποίας υλοποιήθηκαν ο αντίστοιχος αναλογικός- διαφορικός ελεγκτής και ελεγκτής ασαφούς λογικής. Ο πειραματισμός απέδειξε, σε πρώτη φάση, την αποτελεσματικότητά των ελεγκτών και της σχεδίασης του ρομποτικού σκάφους. Στη συνέχεια, χρησιμοποιώντας την ίδια αρχιτεκτονική λογικού υλικού του ρομπότ, εφαρμόστηκε έλεγχος αλληλοεξαρτώμενων συμπεριφορών. Σχεδιάστηκε ένα μοντέλο τριών ιεραρχημένων επιπέδων για την επίτευξη μιας ατομικής βιομιμητικής συμπεριφοράς, καθ' ομοίωση των βασικών συμπεριφορών που συναντώνται στα έμβια υποβρύχια όντα: περιπλάνηση, αναζήτηση τροφής, αποφυγή θηρευτών και αναζήτηση φωλιάς. Αυτό το μοντέλο ελέγχου, αφού απέδειξε κατά τη διάρκεια δοκιμών στο χώρο πειραματισμού την αποτελεσματικότητά και την αξιοπιστία του, αποτέλεσε τη βάση για το σχεδιασμό μιας βιομιμητικής συνεργατικής συμπεριφοράς για ομάδα υποβρύχιων ρομπότ. Τα μέλη της ομάδας διακρίνονται σε δύο ρόλους, του αρχηγού και των ακολούθων του και παρουσιάζουν, συνολικά, την υλοποίηση της θηρευτικής τεχνικής που έχει παρατηρηθεί στην οικογένεια των ρινοδέλφινων. Κάθε ρόλος υποστηρίζεται από το αντίστοιχο μοντέλο αλληλοεξαρτώμενων συμπεριφορών. Με τον τρόπο αυτό υλοποιήθηκε η περιπλάνηση του θηρευτή αρχηγού και η συνοδεία του από τους ακόλουθούς του, ο αλληλοεντοπισμός μεταξύ των μελών της ομάδας, η αναζήτηση θηραμάτων και η επίθεση σε αυτά. Οι δύο βιομιμητικοί ρόλοι υλοποιήθηκαν με τη βοήθεια λογισμικού προσομοίωσης. Οι προσομοιωμένες δοκιμές απέδειξαν την αποτελεσματική συνεργασία μεταξύ των μελών μιας ομάδας ρομπότ, πανομοιότυπων με το πρωτότυπο που κατασκευάστηκε.
