Extant members of Acipenseridae are generally classified in four genera: Scaphirhynchus, Pseudoscaphirhynchus, Huso and "Acipenser," which is widely recognized to be paraphyletic. Advances have been made in understanding the systematic relationships among sturgeons based on both morphological and molecular data. Analysis of mitochondrial DNA data suggested that Pseudoscaphirhynchus should be regarded as nested within "Acipenser," specifically as sister group to the Stellate Sturgeon, A. stellatus. Recent morphological analyses also recovered this relationship, supported by a number of osteological synapomorphies, although these results were based on few and relatively small individuals. Here we describe the anatomy of the skull of A. stellatus based on newly prepared specimens of adult individuals, as well as examination of a large number of preserved individuals representing a broad range of ontogenetic stages. We present new anatomical data from all regions of the skull (dermatocranium, neurocranium, viscerocranium) and offer interpretations of these and other characters. In particular, we describe the allometry in the snout of A. stellatus, which undergoes substantial elongation relative to other sturgeons. Aspects of the skull of A. stellatus are compared to other members of the family, specifically the course of the occipital sensory canal and the morphology and distribution of cranial spines. Understanding why some clades diversify greatly while others do not is a major goal of evolutionary biology. Both abiotic and biotic factors are important in driving unequal morphological diversity across the tree of life. However, few studies have quantified how abiotic habitat and community composition differences influence unequal morphological diversification in spatiotemporally diffuse radiations. We use geometric morphometrics, abiotic habitat data generated by Geographic Information Systems (GIS) analyses, evolutionary simulations, and phylogenetic comparative methods to determine whether random evolution, habitat variation, competition for niches, or a combination of factors influenced the unequal body shape diversity of a Gondwanan freshwater fish radiation. We find that Neotropical characiform lineages, which exhibit substantially more body shape diversity than their African counterparts, occupy significantly more slope and elevation habitats than African lineages. Differences in habitat occupation between the continental radiations occur through a combination of likely competition with cypriniform fishes in Africa restricting access to higher slope and elevation habitats and significantly more low-elevation and slope habitats available in the Neotropics. Our findings suggest that spatiotemporally widespread radiations, like Characiformes, do not diversify across homogenized habitats and biotic assemblages, with differences in community structure and physical habitat playing an important role in driving unequal morphological diversification. The Chinese sturgeon, Acipenser sinensis, is a large member of Acipenseridae now found only in the Yangtze River and the Yellow and East China seas. The goal of this paper was to describe the skull of A. sinensis in the context of recent anatomical and systematic studies of sturgeons. Five specimens (354-670 mm standard length) were prepared as skeletons. The left and right parietals and frontals are broadly separated by a median fontanelle. The lateral-most lateral extrascapular variably supports the confluence of the supratemporal, occipital and trunk lateral lines. There is no distinct ventral supraorbital process as found in other sturgeons. The anterodorsal portion of the snout is unique among Acipenseridae by having a single large anamestic dorsal rostral bone instead of a series of separate dorsal rostral bones. There are 0-2 lateral rostral bones on each side positioned anterior to but not in contact with the horizontal arm of the jugal. The dorsal surface of the neurocranium lacks a pineal opening, and its anterior tip is sharply pointed in the smaller specimens examined and gently curved in larger specimens. The anteromedial arm of the palatopterygoid is broad relative to other acipenserids. These new morphological data are discussed and compared among Acipenseridae. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Although 11 studies have addressed the systematics of the four families and 281 fish species of the ecomorphologically diverse Anostomoidea, none has proposed a global hypothesis of relationships. We synthesized these studies to yield a supermatrix with 463 morphological characters among 174 ingroup species, and inferred phylogeny with parsimony and Bayesian optimization. We evaluated the applicability of the supermatrix approach to morphological datasets, tested its sensitivity to missing data, determined the impact of homoplastic characters on phylogenetic resolution, and determined the distribution of homologies and homoplasies on the topology. Despite more than 60% missing data, analyses supported the monophyly of all families, and phylogenetic structure degraded only with inclusion of species with high percentages of missing data and in analyses limited to homoplasies. The latter differs modestly from the full matrix indicating phylogenetic signal in homoplastic characters. Character distributions differ across the phylogeny, with a greater prevalence of homologies at deeper nodes and homoplasies nearer the tips than expected by chance. This may suggest early diversification into distinct bauplans with subsequent diversification of faster evolving character systems. Cave animals have fascinated scientists for centuries, and clades consisting primarily of cave-adapted species are even more intriguing. The percopsiforms are an enigmatic group of fishes comprised of nine species in seven genera, with four species in three genera exhibiting characteristic troglomorphic features, such as a lack of pigmentation and eyes. Nucleotide characters presented here provide the first test of monophyly for both the Percopsiformes and Amblyopsidae with this character type and taxonomic completeness. Characters of ND2 support a monophyletic Percopsiformes and Amblyopsidae and further document phylogeographic subdivision in two stygobitic genera, Amblyopsis and Typhlichthys, in Amblyopsidae. Age estimates from time-calibrated branch lengths utilizing two independent intra-lineage fossils indicate that the ancestor to amblyopsids is Eocene in age, and that phylogeographic subdivision in both Amblyopsis and Typhlichthys occurred primarily in the Miocene. Interestingly, ancestral character state reconstruction for the amblyopsids strongly supports the re-evolution of eyes and body pigment. Orconectes macrus (Neosho Midget Crayfish) and O. nana (Midget Crayfish) are a proposed sister-species pair with a small range on the western edge of the Ozark Highlands Physiographic province. Originally proposed as subspecies, O. macrus was elevated to full species status without explicit reason. This study utilized a single-locus mtDNA region (cytochrome oxidase I) to test: (1) monophyly of the species pair, (2) monophyly of the proposed species, and (3) examine if full species status is warranted for O. macrus. Phylogenetic reconstructions indicate that the two taxa indeed comprise a species pair and that each species is well supported as monophyletic. The impact of preserved museum specimens is transforming and increasing by three-dimensional (3D) imaging that creates high-fidelity online digital specimens. Through examples from the openVertebrate (oVert) Thematic Collections Network, we describe how we created a digitization community dedicated to the shared vision of making 3D data of specimens available and the impact of these data on a broad audience of scientists, students, teachers, artists, and more. High-fidelity digital 3D models allow people from multiple communities to simultaneously access and use scientific specimens. Based on our multiyear, multi-institution project, we identify significant technological and social hurdles that remain for fully realizing the potential impact of digital 3D specimens. Ichthyological surveys have traditionally been conducted using whole-specimen, capture-based sampling with varied but conventional fishing gear. Recently, environmental DNA (eDNA) metabarcoding has emerged as a complementary, and possible alternative, approach to whole-specimen methodologies. In the tropics, where much of the diversity remains undescribed, vast reaches continue unexplored, and anthropogenic activities are constant threats; there have been few eDNA attempts for ichthyological inventories. We tested the discriminatory power of eDNA using MiFish primers with existing public reference libraries and compared this with capture-based methods in two distinct ecosystems in the megadiverse Amazon basin. In our study, eDNA provided an accurate snapshot of the fishes at higher taxonomic levels and corroborated its effectiveness to detect specialized fish assemblages. Some flaws in fish metabarcoding studies are routine issues addressed in natural history museums. Thus, by expanding their archives and adopting a series of initiatives linking collection-based research, training and outreach, natural history museums can enable the effective use of eDNA to survey Earth's hotspots of biodiversity before taxa go extinct. A checklist of recent and fossil fishes of the Order Characiformes is presented herein and believed to be complete through 2022. A total of 47 collaborators checked and provided information about their taxa of expertise. The list is arranged in alphabetical order by family and then genus and includes all available synonyms. From a total of 3,087 species group names and 527 genus group names, 2,334 species are currently treated as valid, and assigned to 301 genera and 24 families. This total includes 25 species known only from the fossil record, of which 21 are assigned to eight extant families and four are Incertae sedis in Characiformes, but does not include five species based on fossil which were wrongly treated in Characiformes. The status of 79 nominal species remains unresolved. When there are two competing hypotheses about the validity of a name, one of them is chosen and the alternate interpretation is provided in the remark section of that name. Distributional summaries are presented as numbers that correspond to areas for which there is a record of occurrence of the species. Biodiversity collections are experiencing a renaissance fueled by the intersection of informatics, emerging technologies, and the extended use and interpretation of specimens and archived databases. In this article, we explore the potential for transformative research in ecology integrating biodiversity collections, stable isotope analysis (SIA), and environmental informatics. Like genomic DNA, SIA provides a common currency interpreted in the context of biogeochemical principles. Integration of SIA data across collections allows for evaluation of long-term ecological change at local to continental scales. Challenges including the analysis of sparse samples, a lack of information about baseline isotopic composition, and the effects of preservation remain, but none of these challenges is insurmountable. The proposed research framework interfaces with existing databases and observatories to provide benchmarks for retrospective studies and ecological forecasting. Collections and SIA add historical context to fundamental questions in freshwater ecological research, reference points for ecosystem monitoring, and a means of quantitative assessment for ecosystem restoration. Heteromormyrus Steindachner, 1866, a genus of Mormyridae (Teleostei: Osteoglossomorpha), has been monotypic since the description of Heteromormyrus pauciradiatus (Steindacher, 1866) from a single specimen. No type locality other than "Angola" was given and almost no specimens have been subsequently identified to this species. In order to investigate the relationship of this taxon to fresh specimens collected in Angola and elsewhere, whole genome paired-end sequencing of DNA extracted from the holotype specimen of Heteromormyrus pauciradiatus was performed and a nearly complete mitogenome assembled from the sequences obtained. Comparison of cytochrome oxidase I and cytochrome b sequences from this mitogenome to sequences from recently collected material reveal that Heteromormyrus pauciradiatus is closely related to specimens identified as Hippopotamyrus ansorgii (Boulenger, 1905), Hippopotamyrus szaboi Kramer, van der Bank & Wink, 2004, Hippopotamyrus longilateralis Kramer & Swartz, 2010, as well as to several undescribed forms from subequatorial Africa collectively referred to in the literature as the "Hippopotamyrus ansorgii species complex" and colloquially known as "slender stonebashers." Previous molecular phylogenetic work has shown that these species are not close relatives of Hippopotamyrus castor Pappenheim, 1906, the type species of genus Hippopotamyrus Pappenheim, 1906 from Cameroon, and are thus misclassified. Hippopotamyrus ansorgii species complex taxa and another species shown to have been misclassified, Paramormyrops tavernei (Poll, 1972), are placed in genus Heteromormyrus and one genetic lineage from the Kwanza and Lucala rivers of Angola are identified as conspecific Heteromormyrus pauciradiatus. Three additional new combinations and a synonymy in Mormyridae are introduced. The morphological characteristics and geographical distribution of the genus Heteromormyrus are reviewed. Bonytongues (Osteoglossomorpha) constitute an ancient clade of teleost fishes distributed in freshwater habitats throughout the world. The group includes well-known species such as arowanas, featherbacks, pirarucus, and the weakly electric fishes in the family Mormyridae. Their disjunct distribution, extreme morphologies, and electrolocating capabilities (Gymnarchidae and Mormyridae) have attracted much scientific interest, but a comprehensive phylogenetic framework for comparative analysis is missing, especially for the species-rich family Mormyridae. Of particular interest are disparate craniofacial morphologies among mormyrids which might constitute an exceptional model system to study convergent evolution. We present a phylogenomic analysis based on 546 exons of 179 species (out of 260), 28 out of 29 genera, and all six families of extant bonytongues. Based on a recent reassessment of the fossil record of osteoglossomorphs, we inferred dates of divergence among transcontinental clades and the major groups. The estimated ages of divergence among extant taxa (e.g. Osteoglossomorpha, Osteoglossiformes, and Mormyroidea) are older than previous reports, but most of the divergence dates obtained for clades on separate continents are too young to be explained by simple vicariance hypotheses. Biogeographic analysis of mormyrids indicates that their high species diversity in the Congo Basin is a consequence of range reductions of previously widespread ancestors and that the highest diversity of craniofacial morphologies among mormyrids originated in this basin. Special emphasis on a taxon-rich representation for mormyrids revealed pervasive misalignment between our phylogenomic results and mormyrid taxonomy due to repeated instances of convergence for extreme craniofacial morphologies. Estimation of ancestral phenotypes revealed contingent evolution of snout elongation and unique projections from the lower jaw to form the distinctive Schnauzenorgan. Synthesis of comparative analyses suggests that the remarkable craniofacial morphologies of mormyrids evolved convergently due to niche partitioning, likely enabled by interactions between their exclusive morphological and electrosensory adaptations. Abstract: The mitochondrial (mt) genomes of Fusarium verticillioides, Fusarium solani and Fusarium graminearum were annotated and found to be 53.7, 63.0 and 95.7kb in length, respectively. The genomes encode all genes typically associated with mtDNAs of filamentous fungi yet are considerably larger than the mt genome of F. oxysporum. Size differences are largely due to the number of group I introns. Surprisingly, the genomes contain a highly variable region of 7–9kb that encodes an exceptionally large, unidentified open reading frame (uORF). The region has the hallmarks of a horizontally transmitted DNA and was likely acquired prior to the divergence of Fusarium species. Two additional uORFs were detected that are also under positive selection. DNA repeats associated with the uORFs suggest that 3′ gene duplication may be an adaptive mechanism to modify coding regions or generate new ORFs. The acquisition of these new genes contrasts to the wide-scale size reduction experienced by fungal mt genomes. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

The decline in populations of the eastern massasauga rattlesnake (Sistrurus catenatus catenatus) across its range is of concern to conservation managers and the species is currently a candidate for federal listing. Because only four eastern massasauga populations are known to occur in Missouri, the species is on the Missouri Endangered Species List. We sought to produce a molecular genetic data set that could be used to inform conservation management decisions about three of these populations. Our method was to collect and analyze data from three microsatellites sites in an effort to provide insight into the genetic health of the populations and into relationships between them. Our method was controlled by inclusion of two populations of the western massasauga (Sistrurus catenatus tergeminus) from southeastern Nebraska. The final data set included 111 individuals from Missouri and Nebraska populations. Although a significant portion (92%) of alleles were shared between each population, low levels of heterozygosity were detected, indicating local inbreeding. Tests of population differentiation suggested that little to no gene flow between these populations has occurred, giving rise to unique allele frequencies and combinations which may be of high conservation value. Most notably, significant differentiation was observed between putative subpopulations at the Squaw Creek National Wildlife Refuge that are in close proximity to one another Our results illustrate the value of molecular genetics analysis in conservation management and have important implications for the management of Missouri massasauga populations. Curimatidae, the fourth largest family of detritivorous Neotropical characiform fishes, encompasses eight extant genera and over 110 species dwelling in diverse freshwater habitats from Costa Rica to Argentina. Extensive phylogenetic analyses of soft anatomy and osteology provided evidence for intergeneric and most interspecific relationships, and formed the basis of curimatid taxonomy for nearly 40 years. However, that morphological phylogeny demonstrated incomplete phylogenetic resolution at various scales and has never been tested with extensive molecular data. Herein, we infer molecular phylogenies spanning ∼70% of the known species diversity using three nuclear and three mitochondrial loci. Topologies from concatenated likelihood and Bayesian analyses and coalescent Bayesian species trees agree broadly with each other, and with the prior morphological hypothesis in many, but not all respects. All molecular analyses support the monophyly of Curimatidae and of six of its constituent genera, and agree on the placement of Curimatopsis as sister to all other curimatids. DNA-based intergeneric relationships differ substantially from prior morphological hypotheses by placing Curimata sister to Potamorhina and Psectrogaster sister to Pseudocurimata , rather than in a ladderized arrangement. Our results also resolve a major uncertainty in the morphological tree by revealing Cyphocharax , a genus for which no anatomical synapomorphy has ever been proposed, as a paraphyletic assemblage containing a monophyletic Steindachnerina and a polyphyletic Curimatella . Overall, the phylogeny expands substantially our understanding of the morphology, phylogenetics and evolution of the Curimatidae, and will guide future intrageneric studies by improving precision in the choice of comparative taxa. Paralichthys lethostigma (Southern Flounder) inhabits the continental shelf and estuarine waters of the Gulf of Mexico and the east coast of the North Atlantic, from peninsular Florida to Albemarle Sound in North Carolina. Between 30 May and 20 August 2012, we collected 15 juvenile (71-192 mm) Southern Flounder in fyke nets in the Mattaponi River, a tributary of the York River, in southeastern Virginia. This is the first known documentation of juvenile Southern Flounder in any tributary of Chesapeake Bay. We confirmed our identification of the specimens as Southern Flounder morphologically and genetically by counting gill rakers and sequencing cytochrome oxidase subunit I, respectively. The lower jaw of Lepisosteus osseus has been described as containing a U-shaped cartilaginous structure identified as a detached portion of Meckel's cartilage. We investigated this structure through study of a growth series of L. osseus, including cleared-and-stained specimens and histological preparations. Meckel's cartilage is well developed by 17.2 mm SL, and is formed by typical hyaline cartilage. The left and right Meckel's cartilage are continuous across the anterior midline in most small specimens (<35 mm SL), although the robustness of this continuity is variable and in some specimens the two sides are separate. In larger individuals (>85 mm SL) the left and right sides are separate from one another and end far posterior to the tip of the dentaries. In specimens between 17.6-22.1 mm SL, there is a diffuse, V-shaped patch of connective tissue between the rami of the lower jaws. By 35 mm SL this patch becomes more consolidated and in histological sections of a 44.6 mm SL specimen, it is revealed to contain chondrocytes. In even larger individuals, this becomes a well-defined U-shaped structure. Because both this structure and a Meckel's cartilage that crosses the anterior midline are present in the same individuals, we conclude that this cartilage is not homologous to the anterior portion of Meckel's cartilage (i.e., it fails the test of conjunction) but is rather a neomorphic structure, herein termed the rostrohyal.
