Oxidation of organic matter in peat above the phreatic groundwater table causes subsidence and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. Because 25 % of the Netherlands has shallow peat layers in its subsurface, it is essential for Dutch policy makers and stakeholders to have reliable information on present day and near future CO2 emissions under changes in groundwater levels. Furthermore, it is important to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in view of international agreements. We are developing GreenhousePeat: a nationwide model that synthesizes information on peat organic carbon content, land subsidence, and CO2 emission monitoring to model present-day and future CO2 emissions from subsiding peatlands. Here, we discuss the approach and input data of GreenhousePeat. GreenhousePeat is based on a UNFCCC approved model to predict CO2 emissions, albeit based on new input data: 3-D organic matter maps, nationwide subsidence rates, and ranges in oxidation fraction. We validate model outcomes with previously documented CO2 emissions measured at four different locations. We found that for one site the upper bound of the model reproduces the measured CO2 emissions. The modelled emissions at two sites have a relative deviation of approximately 73 % to 29 % from the measured emissions. Whereas one site is a net CO2 sink, although low emissions were modelled. Finally, we conclude on the suitability of the model for CO2 emission forecasting and suggest improvements by incorporating groundwater level information and land use type.

De grondwaterkwaliteit staat onder druk door klimaatverandering en maatschappelijke en technologische ontwikkelingen. In de bodem en ondergrond beschermen drie van nature aanwezige ‘barrières’ het grondwater tegen verontreinigingen. Afsluitende lagen zorgen voor een fysieke barrière; reactieve bestanddelen in de ondergrond vormen door afbraak, omzettingen en binding een geochemische barrière; en afbraak door micro-organismen in de bovengrond fungeert als een biologische barrière. In het project Kennisimpuls grondwaterkwaliteit is de beschermende werking van deze barrières in beeld gebracht en zijn risico’s voor aantasting van de barrières geanalyseerd.

Mineralogical and geochemical characteristics of metallurgical wastes from the Cu-Co smelters situated in the Zambian Copperbelt have been investigated. A number of instrumental analytical methods (XRD, SEM/EDS, EPMA, TEM/EDS) has been used to identify primary and secondary phases in smelter slags and dusts. A set of leaching experiments (CEN/TS 14997 pH-static test, EN 12457 batch test) in combination with geochemical modelling has been performed, with the emphasis on the leaching behaviour of potential contaminants and their release as a function of the pH. The effect of sample preparation on metal leachability from slag was also evaluated, considering the grain size reduction required by the standardised leaching protocols. Environmental and health risk assessments of the dust samples have been performed. It was shown that the main carriers of metals in the studied slags were Cu sulphides (bornite, digenite, chalcocite), Co sulphides (cobaltpentlandite), Co-bearing intermetallic phases and alloys. Copper and cobalt were detected in major silicates and spinels, substituting for Fe or Mg in their structures, and in glass. The presence of secondary metal-bearing phases observed on the slag surfaces indicated the reactivity of the slags on contact with water/atmosphere. It was reported that in...
