Introduction: Many older patients with cancer have their family members, often their adult children, involved in a process of treatment decision making. Despite the growing awareness that family members can facilitate a process of shared decision making (SDM), literature about SDM pays little attention to family relations and strategies to facilitate family involvement in decision making processes. Objective: This study aimed to 1. explore surgeons' and nurses' perceptions about involvement of adult children in treatment decision-making for older patients; and 2. identify strategies they use to ensure positive family involvement. Methods: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 13 surgical oncologists and 13 oncology nurses in two Dutch hospitals. Qualitative content analysis was conducted according to the steps of thematic analysis. Results: Surgeons and nurses indicated that adult children's involvement in decision-making increases when patients become frail. They reported beneficial and challenging characteristics of this involvement. Six strategies to stimulate positive involvement of adult children in the decision-making process were revealed: 1. Focus on the patient; 2. Actively involve adult children; 3. Acknowledge different perspectives; 4. Get to know the family system; 5. Check that the patient and family members understand the information; and 6. Stimulate communication and deliberation with adult children. Conclusion: Surgeons and nurses perceive involvement of adult in treatment decision making as beneficial. However, family involvement can trigger specific complexities and challenges in treatment decision conversations that call for practical patient and family-centered strategies.

Factors influencing family involvement in treatment decision making for older patients with cancer

The Center of Nursing Excellence (CNE) in Kazakhstan is developed within the ProInCa project. The CNE focuses on the transfer of research outcomes into nursing practice and the research ideas to the universities for research and educational purposes. It includes mechanisms for collaboration and knowledge sharing within the Centre of Nursing Excellence between the academic national and international nursing community (universities and other educational institutions) and society. These mechanisms involve the creation of an e-platform and formalized national and international networks and working groups.

Presentation of the development process of the e-platform of the Center of Nursing Excellence including: the requirements analysis research and the verified list of requirements and how this was used to design the e-platform. Explanation of the functions to support knowledge sharing and collaboration.

The goal of this Master Class is to train participants in the possibilities of the Center of Nursing Excellence’s e-platform to improve their own nursing education; nursing practice and nursing research and to contribute to the further development and the wider use of the CNE in Kazakhstan. The Master Class is intended for chief/practical nurses; nursing teachers at universities and higher medical colleges and managers with a role in the education of nurses.

The Master Class is organized for partners and associated partners from the ProInCa project. The aim of the event is to learn how to develop e-learning courses in Moodle for the Center of Nursing Excellence in Kazakhstan. Participants will learn about e-learning didactics; use of Moodle; and will create one or more draft e-learning courses for the main topics of the ProInCa project: Evidence Based Nursing, Nursing Research, Nursing Leadership and Nursing Clinical Guidelines. The Master Class includes presentations, workshops and online development of courses in Moodle. The Master Class is composed of 54 hours of studying and active participation. All participants will receive a certificate of attendance

This contributed volume is based on the "European Core Competences Framework for health and social care professionals working with older people" (ECCF), developed and verified in a unique international cooperation between 26 universities and universities of applied sciences in 25 European countries, part of the European Later Life Active Network (ELLAN). In addition to the framework, the book outlines the necessary qualifications and describes the roles of professionals working with older people in health and social services. It explores healthy ageing for older people from different perspectives and describes the seven roles of health and social care professionals (Expert, Communicator, Collaborator, Organizer, Health and Welfare Advocate, Scholar, and Professional), before going on to define 18 related competences and elaborating them in performance indicators. Beyond the ECCF, the book explains the widely used CanMED role model and puts forward theories to support a client centered and integrated approach on health and social care in order to change attitudes toward older clients and offer better care and support. It also provides health and social care professionals, for example nurses, allied health professionals and social workers with new contextual information and cultural awareness. It gives a voice to students by addressing selected perspectives for professional development. The book includes questions for reflective learning helping to make the book a vital practical instrument for use in the educational context throughout Europe. Europe’s ageing populations represent a major challenge for both public health and social care systems. 18% of the population is 65 years old and over, and this proportion will increase in the coming years. As a result, more and more health and social care professionals will work with older people in different settings – at home, in the community, in hospitals or in long-term care settings. Older people, and especially the frail, face a host of interrelated issues, e.g. cognitive restrictions, functional restrictions, psychosocial problems, multimorbidity, polypharmacy and social isolation. These problems call for an integrated approach to health and social care, which this book supplies. It is intended for health and social care professionals, students and educators, for a better understanding of Europe’s ageing society and of the impact on care and services. Furthermore, the ECCF offers educational institutes a unique resource for curriculum development, education, training and assessment.

As a Scholar, the health and social care professionals pursue excellence by continually evaluating the processes and outcomes of their daily work, comparing their work with that of others, and by actively seeking feedback to improve the quality of care and support they provide for the older person and their family. The main competence part of the role of the Scholar is described in this chapter. The first competence is about growing one’s expertise by different ways of learning and disseminating this expertise. The second competence of this role concerns evidence-based practice and the innovation of care and services.

Over the last two decades, much work has been done for developing person-centred approaches in social and health services in order to deliver better treatment and care for older people. Communication is pivotal in person-centred care and services. Communication skills are necessary to understand the needs and wishes of the older people and their families and be able to decide for the best person-centred care. Competences of the communicator role are maintaining relationships and effective communication, empowerment and coaching.

There are big differences in how health-care and social services for older people are organized in Europe. In spite of these differences, all countries face the challenge of the growing number of older people and have to deal with the same trends, developments and challenges. The ageing population demands concerted response all over Europe as the increasing number of older people has impact on changed needs in health-care and social services. Moreover, advancements in public health and medical technologies, along with improvements in living conditions, mean that people are living longer and, in many cases, healthier lives than before. Making health and active ageing a reality by keeping older people healthy and independent is a challenge that needs to be addressed comprehensively in different health and social care settings.
