Abstract

Feminist approaches to multi-scalar, more-than-human, power and politics pushes critical agrarian studies in novel directions. Gender-nature-body are critical sites for realignments of social, material and political relations, resulting in uneven access to and control over resources. Gender, race, class and other forms of intersectional socionatural relations are foundational to agrarian studies concerns such as class formation, collective action, extractivism and land grabs. The chapter reframes agrarian conflicts as the material and emotional outcomes of embodied, differentiated responses to enclosure and commodification, linking scales from the global economy to the uneven conditions of peoples’ lives to illuminate spaces of transformation.

Abstract

The planetary boundaries concept has profoundly changed the vocabulary and representation of global environmental issues. We bring a critical social science perspective to this framework through the notion of societal boundaries and aim to provide a more nuanced understanding of the social nature of thresholds. We start by highlighting the strengths and weaknesses of planetary boundaries from a social science perspective. We then focus on capitalist societies as a heuristic for discussing the expansionary dynamics, power relations, and lock-ins of modern societies that impel highly unsustainable societal relations with nature. While formulating societal boundaries implies a controversial process ‒ based on normative judgments, ethical concerns, and socio-political struggles ‒ it has the potential to offer guidelines for a just, social-ecological transformation. Collective autonomy and the politics of self-limitation are key elements of societal boundaries and are linked to important proposals and pluriverse experiences to integrate well-being and boundaries. The role of the state and propositions for radical alternative approaches to well-being have particular importance. We conclude with reflections on social freedom, defined as the right not to live at others’ expense. Toward the aim of defining boundaries through transdisciplinary and democratic processes, we seek to open a dialogue on these issues. © 2021 The Author(s). Abstract

With the finest biochemical and molecular approaches, convincing explorative strategies, and long-term vision, Stefan Hörtensteiner succeeded in elucidating the biochemical pathway responsible for chlorophyll degradation. After having contributed to the identification of key chlorophyll degradation products in the course of the past 25 years, he gradually identified and characterized most of the crucial players in the PAO/phyllobilin degradation pathway of chlorophyll. He was one of the brightest plant biochemists of his generation, and his work opened doors to a better understanding of plant senescence, tetrapyrrole homeostasis, and their complex regulation. He sadly passed away on 5 December 2020, aged 57.

Acanthamoeba castellanii can increase the replication of Legionella spp. in human monocytes. Legionella growth in protozoa can also induce phenotypic modulation and increase the organism's resistance to disinfectants and antibiotics.
