Abstract

Vegetation often understood merely as the result of long-term climate conditions. However, vegetation itself plays a fundamental role in shaping Earth's climate by regulating the energy, water, and biogeochemical cycles across terrestrial landscapes. It exerts influence by altering surface roughness, consuming significant water resources through transpiration and interception, lowering atmospheric CO2 concentration, and controlling net radiation and its partitioning into sensible and latent heat fluxes. This influence propagates through the atmosphere, from microclimate scales to the entire atmospheric boundary layer, subsequently impacting large-scale circulation and the global transport of heat and moisture. Understanding the feedbacks between vegetation and atmosphere across multiple scales is crucial for predicting the influence of land use and cover changes and for accurately representing these processes in climate models. This short review aims to discuss the mechanisms through which vegetation modulates climate across spatial and temporal scales. Particularly, we evaluate the influence of vegetation on circulation patterns, precipitation and temperature, both in terms of trends and extreme events, such as droughts and heatwaves. 5. Time-dependent theory of reconstruction of attosecond harmonic beating by interference of multi-photon transitions

Abstract

Phase and time delays of atomic above-threshold ionization are usually experimentally explored by the reconstruction of attosecond harmonic beating by interference of two-photon transitions (RABBIT) technique. Theoretical studies of RABBIT rely on the perturbative treatment of the probe (NIR or visible) laser pulse with respect to the atomic electric field and the pump composed of a train of attosecond pulses made of several harmonics with frequencies multiple of the probe fundamental frequency. In this work we present a semiclassical non-perturbative description of the phase delays for the emission of electrons from hydrogen atoms based on the strong-field approximation as the relative phase between pump and probe pulses is varied, where more than two photons are involved. Ionization times are calculated within the saddle-point approximations and serve to individualize the different electron wave packets that produce the RABBIT interferometric scheme. We observe different behaviors of the phase delays at different intensities of the probe. For example, for moderate and intense probe fields, the harmonics and sidebands happen to be in phase ($ \gtrsim 4 \times 10^{11}$ W/cm$^2$). In turn, when the probe field is sufficiently weak, we recover the well-known rule of thumb for the phase delays developed within the perturbative RABBIT theory [see D. Guenot et al. Phys. Rev. A 85, 053424 (2012)]. We show that the intracycle interference of the different paths contributing to the final energy (sideband or high harmonic) is responsible for the different behaviors of the interference pattern. 10. Optimal quantum teleportation protocols for fixed average fidelity

Abstract

We demonstrate that among all quantum teleportation protocols giving rise to the same average fidelity, those with aligned Bloch vectors between input and output states exhibit the minimum average trace distance. This defines optimal protocols. Furthermore, we show that optimal protocols can be interpreted as the perfect quantum teleportation protocol under the action of correlated one-qubit channels. In particular, we focus on the deterministic case, for which the final Bloch vector length is equal for all measurement outcomes. Within these protocols, there exists one type that corresponds to the action of uncorrelated channels: these are depolarizing channels. Abstract

In this study, we investigate the magnetic and magnetocaloric properties of nanostructured La0.6Sr0.4CoO3 (LSC) samples synthesized under confinement conditions within porous templates. Using this method, we obtained de-agglomerated nanoparticles, which provide us with the feasibility of applying them in nanoparticle films that can be tailored to intricate geometries. We specifically explored the impact of pore size of the template on key parameters including saturation magnetization (MS), Curie temperature (TC), maximum entropy change ({\Delta}S), and relative cooling power (RCP). Our findings reveal enhancements in those quantities, that are likely to be related with the nanostructure of the samples, indicating the potential of nanostructured LSC as an active material for magnetic refrigeration devices. Our alternative approach of synthesizing magnetocaloric materials under confinement conditions presents an exciting prospect for future research and development in the field., Comment: 17 pages, 7 figures

Abstract

We investigate bounds in the transmission of classical information through quantum systems. Our focus lies in the generalized Holevo theorem, which provides a single-letter Holevo-like inequality from arbitrary quantum distance measures. Through the introduction of the $\alpha$-$z$-R\'enyi relative entropies, which comprise known relevant quantities such as the R\'enyi relative entropy and the sandwiched R\'enyi relative entropy, we establish the Holevo-R\'enyi inequality. This result leads to a quantum bound for the $\alpha$-mutual information, suggesting new insights into communication channel performance and the fundamental limits for reliability functions in memoryless multi-letter communication channels.

Abstract

Graptolites represent one of the most important index fossils for the lower to middle Paleozoic biostratigraphy worldwide. Compared to other regions, graptolite faunas exhibited a marked decrease in diversity in Argentina during the Silurian, what resulted in reduced and low-varied registers and denied biostratigraphic works in its territory. This study introduces new Silurian graptolite faunas from the Los Espejos Formation, Poblete Norte section, Central Precordillera of Argentina. A total of thirteen graptolitic levels were identified, containing Bohemograptus bohemicus, Lobograptus sp., Saetograptus argentinus argentinus, Saetograptus cf. S. varians, Uncinatograptus uncinatus notouncinatus, Uncinatograptus elsae sp. nov., and Uncinatograptus lisandroi sp. nov. The occurrence of Uncinatograptus spp. in association with B. bohemicus could indicate the presence of the lower Gorstian Neodiversograptus nilssoni Biozone. A few meters above, the finding of S. a. argentinus in association with S. cf. S. varians, U. u. notouncinatus, and Lobograptus sp. suggest the presence of the lower Gorstian Lobograptus progenitor Biozone. The upper graptolitic beds yield specimens of S. a. argentinus and B. bohemicus, suggesting late Gorstian to early Ludfordian ages. These new graptolite faunas allow to correlate more precisely with local (Precordillera and Famatina), regional (North Western Argentina and Bolivia) and global equivalent sections. This discovery introduces new graptolite faunas, first-time recorded in South America, proposes for the first time a graptolite biostratigraphy for the Ludlow of Precordillera, and complements so far insufficient knowledge on Ludlovian graptolitic faunas of the continent in a critical time in the history of this fossil group.

Abstract

Abstract We investigated the impact of antiviral treatment on the emergence of SARS-CoV-2 resistance during persistent infections in immunocompromised patients (n = 15). All patients received remdesivir and some also received nirmatrelvir-ritonavir (n = 3) or therapeutic monoclonal antibodies (n = 4). Sequence analysis showed that nine patients carried viruses with mutations in the nsp12 (RNA dependent RNA polymerase), while four had viruses with nsp5 (3C protease) mutations. Infectious SARS-CoV-2 with a double mutation in nsp5 (T169I) and nsp12 (V792I) was recovered from respiratory secretions 77 days after initial COVID-19 diagnosis from a patient sequentially treated with nirmatrelvir-ritonavir and remdesivir. In vitro characterization confirmed its decreased sensitivity to remdesivir and nirmatrelvir, which was overcome by combined antiviral treatment. Studies in golden Syrian hamsters demonstrated efficient transmission to contact animals. This study documents the isolation of SARS-CoV-2 carrying resistance mutations to both nirmatrelvir and remdesivir from a patient and demonstrates its transmissibility in vivo.

15. Screening Smarter, Not Harder: A Comparative Analysis of Machine Learning Screening Algorithms and Heuristic Stopping Criteria for Systematic Reviews in Educational Research

Abstract

Systematic reviews and meta-analyses are crucial for advancing research, yet they are time-consuming and resource-demanding. Although machine learning and natural language processing algorithms may reduce this time and these resources, their performance has not been tested in education and educational psychology, and there is a lack of clear information on when researchers should stop the reviewing process. In this study, we conducted a retrospective screening simulation using 27 systematic reviews in education and educational psychology. We evaluated the sensitivity, specificity, and estimated time savings of several learning algorithms and heuristic stopping criteria. The results showed, on average, a 58% (SD = 19%) reduction in the screening workload of irrelevant records when using learning algorithms for abstract screening and an estimated time savings of 1.66 days (SD = 1.80). The learning algorithm random forests with sentence bidirectional encoder representations from transformers outperformed other algorithms. This finding emphasizes the importance of incorporating semantic and contextual information during feature extraction and modeling in the screening process. Furthermore, we found that 95% of all relevant abstracts within a given dataset can be retrieved using heuristic stopping rules. Specifically, an approach that stops the screening process after classifying 20% of records and consecutively classifying 5% of irrelevant papers yielded the most significant gains in terms of specificity (M = 42%, SD = 28%). However, the performance of the heuristic stopping criteria depended on the learning algorithm used and the length and proportion of relevant papers in an abstract collection. Our study provides empirical evidence on the performance of machine learning screening algorithms for abstract screening in systematic reviews in education and educational psychology.

16. Digital Gender Gaps in Students' Knowledge, Attitudes and Skills: An Integrative Data Analysis across 32 Countries

Abstract

The digital gender divide is one of the most critical issues in education today. Digital gender gaps can exist in students' access to and use of ICT, attitudes toward technology, and digital knowledge and skills. However, previous research has primarily examined these divides in isolation and largely ignored their interdependencies. Using student data from the 2013 and 2018 International Computer and Information Literacy Study (ICILS), this study examines how these gaps are related. Specifically, we synthesize evidence on gender gaps in digital knowledge and skills, controlling for differences in ICT access and technology attitudes. In addition, we examine the role that technology attitudes play in the gender gap in digital knowledge and skills. Our findings suggest that (a) girls outperform boys in digital knowledge and skills ([beta] = -0.11 to -0.29); (b) gender differences in attitudes toward technology partially explain gender differences in digital knowledge and skills; (c) the variability within and between countries in the gender gap in students' digital skills is partly explained by the type of digital skill and the country's socio-economic development and gender inequality. Overall, this research shows a relationship between the gender gaps in students' digital knowledge and skills and the gender gaps in students' attitudes toward technology. We conclude that the first- and second-level gender digital divides are connected.

Abstract

We analyze two ways to obtain distinguishability measures between quantum maps by employing the square root of the quantum Jensen-Shannon divergence, which forms a true distance in the space of density operators. The arising measures are the transmission distance between quantum channels and the entropic channel divergence. We investigate their mathematical properties and discuss their physical meaning. Additionally, we establish a chain rule for the entropic channel divergence, which implies the amortization collapse, a relevant result with potential applications in the field of discrimination of quantum channels and converse bounds. Finally, we analyze the distinguishability between two given Pauli channels and study exemplary Hamiltonian dynamics under decoherence.

Abstract

Abstract Background The elevated blood pressure (BP) and lower cardiac autonomic modulation (CAM) are associated with higher morbidity mortality risk among older adults. Although exercise is an important intervention for cardiovascular promotion, it is unclear whether combat sports training could benefit cardiovascular outcomes as much as autonomic in this population. This study compared the effects of 12 weeks of Muay Thai (MT) training against functional training (FT) on CAM and hemodynamic parameters in older adults. Methods The sample consisted of 50 older adults (41 women; 66.0 ± 5.3 years old), who were equaly randomized into FT (n = 25) and MT (n = 25) intervention groups. CAM was measured by 30-min rest heart rate variability. Systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP) and resting heart rate (RHR) were measured using an automatic oscillometric device. Pulse pressure (PP) and the double product (DP) were also calculated. The interventions were carried out three times a week, with 60-min length per session, during 12 consecutive weeks. The intensity of the interventions was measured using the subjective perception of exertion scale and by accelerometer. Two-factor repeated measures analysis of covariance was used for groups comparison, considering intervention group and body mass as factors. The 95% confidence interval of the difference (95%CIdif) was also calculated and the effect size was measured using partial eta squared (η2 p). Results CAM indices did not show significant changes across moments and intervention groups. In hemodynamic parameters, only in DBP was there an effect of the moment (F1,39 = 8.206; P = 0.007; η2 p = 0.174, large) and interaction effect between group*moment (F1,39 = 7.950; P = 0.008; η2 p = 0.169, large). Specifically, the MT group at the post-training moment showed lower DBP (P = 0.010; 95%CIdif = -13.3; -1.89) in relation to the FT group. Furthermore, the MT group showed a decrease in DBP during training (P = 0.002; 95%CIdif = -10.3; -2.6). Also, an increase in training intensity was also found over the 12 weeks in FT, with no difference between the groups. Conclusion After 12 weeks of MT practice there was a reduction in DBP compared to FT in older adults. Trial registration NCT03919968 Registration date: 01/02/2019.

29. Association of meeting the 24-h movement guidelines with high blood pressure in adolescents: a cross-sectional study

Abstract The 24-h movement guidelines for children and adolescents comprise recommendations for adequate sleep, moderate to vigorous physical activity (MVPA) and sedentary behaviour (SB). However, whether adolescents who meet these 24-h movement guidelines may be less likely to have high blood pressure (HBP) has not been established. The present study assessed the association between meeting 24-h movement guidelines and HBP in a school-based sample of 996 adolescents between 10–17 years (13.2 ± 2.4 years, 55.4% of girls). Blood pressure was measured using a digital oscillometric device, while sleep, MVPA and SB were measured using the Baecke questionnaire. The association between the 24-h movement guidelines and HBP was performed using binary logistic regression adjusted for sex, age, socioeconomic status, and body mass index. It was observed that less than 1% of the sample meet the three 24-h movement guidelines. The prevalence of HBP was lower in adolescents who meet all three movement 24-h guidelines (11.1%) compared to those who did not meet any guidelines (27.2%). Individual 24-h movement guidelines analysis showed that adolescents with adequate sleep were 35% less likely to have HBP (OR = 0.65; 95% CI 0.46–0.91). Meeting sleep guidelines combined with meeting MVPA (OR = 0.69; 95% CI 0.50–0.95) or SB (OR = 0.67; 95% CI 0.48–0.94) was inversely associated with HBP. Adolescents who meet two or three 24-h movement guidelines were respectively 47% (OR = 0.53; 95% CI 0.29–0.98) and 34% (OR = 0.66; 95% CI 0.48–0.91) less likely to have HBP. In adolescents, meeting sleep and 24-h movement guidelines were inversely associated with HBP.

Abstract

Abstract Attribution of extreme weather events to anthropogenic climate change (ACC) has become an increasingly important line of research in recent years. However, the potential influence of ACC on heavy snowstorms remains largely unexplored. Here we focus on studying the exceptional January 2021 snowfall event in Spain, known as Filomena. First, using observational data and flow analogs, we show that the characteristic synoptic pattern leading to the episode has not significantly changed in frequency over the past decades. Based on this, we assume a fixed dynamical pattern and focus on studying the influence of ACC on the thermodynamics of the event using an atmospheric model and a storyline attribution approach. Our simulations indicate that in northern highlands, ACC intensified snowfall by up to +40% compared with pre-industrial conditions, while in nearby southern lowlands ACC weakened snowfall by up to –80%. This characteristic shift from weakening to intensification is well defined by a critical threshold in temperature. Furthermore, we show that if Filomena were to occur at the end of the 21st century, this contrasting response to ACC would be enhanced. Altogether, our findings highlight the large but uneven impact of global warming on extreme snowstorm events.

Abstract Rainfall interception loss (Ei) is a difficult to study and poorly understood flux compared to transpiration and soil evaporation. The influence of climate and vegetation on Ei is not well known at continental‐to‐global and annual‐to‐decadal scales. Here, we use a long‐term multi‐product approach to examine the global trends in Ei, and further utilize a recently developed and validated dataset to isolate the relative contributions of precipitation, vegetation and evaporative demand. At decadal timescales, increasing Ei is largely driven by global vegetation greening through an increase in the intercepting surface and storage capacity, while its inter‐annual variations are mainly controlled by changes in precipitation, largely related to El Niño/Southern Oscillation. Increasing evaporative demand, driven by atmospheric warming, also positively contributes to the global rise in Ei. This study provides new perspectives for further understanding the impacts of climate change on the terrestrial hydrological cycle.

Abstract

The widespread circulation of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5N1 clade 2.3.4.4b in wild birds in North America since late 2021 has resulted in multiple outbreaks in commercial and backyard poultry leading to major economic losses. Since the emergence of the virus in North America, multiple reassortment events have led to the emergence of many new variant genotypes that have been isolated from wild birds, with several viruses spilling over into poultry and other terrestrial and aquatic mammalian hosts. Notably, the most recent emerging HPAI H5N1 reassortant genotype B3.13 spilled over into dairy cattle (Bos taurus), resulting in unprecedented efficient transmission of the virus in this species, the first case of sustained transmission in a mammalian species. The transmission pathways involved in the spread of the virus from its first detection in Texas to several other states are complex. However, movement of subclinically infected cattle likely played a major role in virus spread. Infection in dairy cattle is characterized by the virus's tropism for milk-secreting cells in the mammary gland, leading to high viral load and shedding in milk. Replication of the virus in milk-secreting cells results in destruction of infected cells leading to severe viral mastitis, which is characterized by marked changes in milk quality (altered consistency and color) and pronounced decline in milk production by clinically affected animals. Here, we provide an overview of the HPAI H5N1 panzootic virus and discuss its host range and the current knowledge of its pathogenesis in the new bovine host.

Abstract

While the eddy covariance (EC) technique is a well-established method for measuring water fluxes (i.e., evaporation or 'evapotranspiration’, ET), the measurement is susceptible to many uncertainties. One such issue is the potential underestimation of ET when relative humidity (RH) is high (>70%), due to low-pass filtering with some EC systems. Yet, this underestimation for different types of EC systems (e.g. open-path or closed-path sensors) has not been characterized for synthesis datasets such as the widely used FLUXNET2015 dataset. Here, we assess the RH-associated underestimation of latent heat fluxes (LE, or ET) from different EC systems for 163 sites in the FLUXNET2015 dataset. We found that the LE underestimation is most apparent during hours when RH is higher than 70%, predominantly observed at sites using closed-path EC systems, but the extent of the LE underestimation is highly site-specific. We then propose a machine learning based method to correct for this underestimation, and compare it to two energy balance closure based LE correction approaches (Bowen ratio correction, BRC, and attributing all errors to LE). Our correction increases LE by 189% for closed-path sites at high RH (>90%), while BRC increases LE by around 30% for all RH conditions. Additionally, we assess the influence of these corrections on ET-based transpiration (T) estimates using two different ET partitioning methods. Results show opposite responses (increasing vs. slightly decreasing T-to-ET ratios, T/ET) between the two methods when comparing T based on corrected and uncorrected LE. Overall, our results demonstrate the existence of a high RH bias in water fluxes in the FLUXNET2015 dataset and suggest that this bias is a pronounced source of uncertainty in ET measurements to be considered when estimating ecosystem T/ET and WUE.

40. Semiclassical strong-field theory of phase delays in $\omega -2\omega$ above-threshold ionization

Abstract

Phase and time delays of atomic above-threshold ionization were recently experimentally explored in an $\omega -2\omega$ setting [Zipp et al, Optica 1, 361 (2014)]. The phases of wavepackets ejected from argon by a strong $2\omega$ pulse were probed as a function of the relative phase of a weaker $\omega$ probe pulse. Numerical simulations solving the time-dependent Schr\"{o}dinger equation (TDSE) displayed a sensitive dependence of the doubly differential momentum distribution on the relative phase between the $\omega$ and $2\omega$ fields. Moreover, a surprisingly strong variation of the extracted phase delays on the intensity of the probe pulse was found. We present a semiclassical strong-field description of the phase delays in the emission of electrons in an $\omega -2\omega$ setting and apply it to atomic hydrogen. Non-perturbative effects in both the $2\omega$ pump and the $\omega$ probe field are included. The semiclassical description allows tracing phase delays to path interferences between emission during different points in time of emission within the temporal unit cell of the two-color laser field. We find good agreement between the semiclassical saddle-point approximation, the full strong field approximation (SFA), and previous results applicable in the perturbative limit of probe fields. We show that the RABBIT-like perturbative description of phase delays breaks down for stronger fields and higher-energy electron emission. In this regime, characterization of the ionization signal requires an entire ensemble of phase delays {$\delta_i(E)$} with $i=1,2,\ldots$ the difference in photon numbers of the strong $2\omega$ field involved in the interfering paths. Context Robust associations have been identified between fertility during adolescence and the disablement process, including pathologies, impairments, functional limitations and disability. Limited theoretical or empirical research considers how and why such relationships exist generally or with the individual associated components of disablement.Objective To consolidate and critically evaluate literature to describe testable, theory-based hypotheses to guide future research on the mechanisms by which fertility during adolescence contributes to disablement.Methods Targeted literature review of research from diverse global settings contextualised in two well-accepted theoretical frameworks in life-course epidemiology: the cumulative risk model and the critical period approach.Results Five hypothesised causal pathways linking adolescent fertility to disablement in later life are described: 1) Causal relationship initiated by fertility during adolescence; 2) Common cause(s) for both, such as adverse childhood experiences; 3) Contributing cause(s) to adolescent fertility; 4) Interaction between adolescent fertility and other risk factors; and 5) Critical period effects unique to adolescence. Most research on the topic is on pathologies versus functional limitations and disability.Conclusion We highlight promising research avenues to inform future research and interventions on adolescent fertility and the disablement process. This work provides theoretical clarity, identifies research gaps, and offers hypotheses-testing opportunities for future research.

Abstract

Abstract As it flows through the city of São Paulo, the Tietê River receives heavy discharges of industrial effluents and domestic sewage, resulting from the city’s continuous urban expansion and the inadequacy of its sanitary sewage system. This study focused on an analysis of the efficiency of PGα21Ca and quaternary ammonium tannate, water purification products, based on coagulation-flocculation and sedimentation tests, followed by treatment with a hydrodynamic cavitation reactor associated with ozonation in the treatment of Tietê River water. The removal of turbidity, apparent color, and chemical oxygen demand (COD) were evaluated. Jar testing assays were conducted, and the best turbidity removal rates were obtained with a concentration of 300 mg L-1 for PGα21Ca and 150 mg L-1 for quaternary ammonium tannate. The coagulation-flocculation treatment removed approximately 93% of turbidity for both coagulants. After combining coagulation-flocculation with hydrodynamic cavitation with ozonation, the final COD removal rate applying PGα21Ca was 47.63% in 1 hour of reaction, while that of quaternary ammonium tannate was 40.13% in 2 hours of reaction. Although the results appear to indicate the superior performance of PGα21Ca, it should be noted that the treatment with quaternary ammonium tannate also provided good results in reducing turbidity, COD, and apparent color, using a smaller dose of this coagulant and that its use may be more advantageous from an environmental point of view, due to its natural composition.

Abstract

ABSTRACT The limited temporal completeness and taxonomic accuracy of species lists, made available in a traditional manner in scientific publications, has always represented a problem. These lists are invariably limited to a few taxonomic groups and do not represent up-to-date knowledge of all species and classifications. In this context, the Brazilian megadiverse fauna is no exception, and the Catálogo Taxonômico da Fauna do Brasil (CTFB) (http://fauna.jbrj.gov.br/), made public in 2015, represents a database on biodiversity anchored on a list of valid and expertly recognized scientific names of animals in Brazil. The CTFB is updated in near real time by a team of more than 800 specialists. By January 1, 2024, the CTFB compiled 133,691 nominal species, with 125,138 that were considered valid. Most of the valid species were arthropods (82.3%, with more than 102,000 species) and chordates (7.69%, with over 11,000 species). These taxa were followed by a cluster composed of Mollusca (3,567 species), Platyhelminthes (2,292 species), Annelida (1,833 species), and Nematoda (1,447 species). All remaining groups had less than 1,000 species reported in Brazil, with Cnidaria (831 species), Porifera (628 species), Rotifera (606 species), and Bryozoa (520 species) representing those with more than 500 species. Analysis of the CTFB database can facilitate and direct efforts towards the discovery of new species in Brazil, but it is also fundamental in providing the best available list of valid nominal species to users, including those in science, health, conservation efforts, and any initiative involving animals. The importance of the CTFB is evidenced by the elevated number of citations in the scientific literature in diverse areas of biology, law, anthropology, education, forensic science, and veterinary science, among others.

46. Leveraging the performance of conventional spectroscopic techniques through data fusion approaches in high-quality edible oil adulteration analyses

Abstract

The high demand, high cost, and low regulations surrounding high-quality edible oils (HQEO) make them a target for fraudulent actions, particularly adulteration with refined oils. Consequently, the authentication of this kind of oil is of great interest. This work assessed the adulteration degree of five HQEOs: sesame, flaxseed, chia, rapeseed, and extra virgin olive oils, using different chemometric strategies to enhance the detection capability of the analytical methodology. Refined oils used as adulterants were evaluated at low concentrations (2–15 % v/v). Three multidimensional spectroscopic techniques (UV–Visible, near-infrared, and excitation-emission matrix fluorescence) were used, and two data fusion strategies (low- and mid-level) were evaluated. Principal component analysis was applied as an exploratory analysis tool to visualize and interpret the information contained in the dataset. For the adulterant quantification, partial least squares regression analysis was used to build the sensitive predictive models. The results revealed that chemical information enhancement leverages the ability to attain reduced prediction compared to unidimensional signals. In scenarios with low sample variability, conventional unidimensional spectroscopy (UV–Visible or near-infrared) data was shown to be adequate to guarantee predictive efficiency. In contrast, when analysing predictive figures derived from models built using a dataset with high variability, e.g., brands, low-level data fusion approaches enhance predictive efficiency. The results showed that excitation-emission matrix-based or low-level data fusion approaches can be accurately implemented to guarantee the authenticity of edible oils even when a low content of adulterant oil is presented.

Abstract

ABSTRACT: In this study we developed an allometric model to predict the total biomass of the tropical tree of economic value Aniba rosaeodora to manage the sustainable use of natural populations through the use of branches and leaves, in the same way that allows us to evaluate the potential for its domestication and develop plantations. For this, 15 trees were sampled with an average diameter at breast height (DBH) of 9 cm (σ = 7.5 cm, CV = 44 %), height (Th) of 17.6 m (σ = 5.5 m, CV = 31 %), an average total biomass of 277.7 kg (σ = 203.9 kg, CV = 73 %), resulting in an average of 4.5 l of essential oil (σ = 3.3 l, CV = 75 %), and with an oil yield of 1.51 % (σ = 0.34 %, CV = 22.3 %). Thus, 29 allometric models were selected to estimate biomass of the stem (Cb), biomass of green branches (Pb), biomass of secondary branches (Sb), leaf biomass (Lb), total tree biomass (Tb) and essential oil, from variables of easy measurement (diameter) and strong correlation (Spearman's Rho 0.63–0.99; P < 0.05). From the tests, the models with the best correlation coefficients, R2 and R2aj were selected to estimate the biomass and essential oil content of each tree. Abstract

Spatio-temporal pattern recognition is a fundamental ability of the brain which is required for numerous real-world activities. Recent deep learning approaches have reached outstanding accuracies in such tasks, but their implementation on conventional embedded solutions is still very computationally and energy expensive. Tactile sensing in robotic applications is a representative example where real-time processing and energy efficiency are required. Following a brain-inspired computing approach, we propose a new benchmark for spatio-temporal tactile pattern recognition at the edge through Braille letter reading. We recorded a new Braille letters dataset based on the capacitive tactile sensors of the iCub robot's fingertip. We then investigated the importance of spatial and temporal information as well as the impact of event-based encoding on spike-based computation. Afterward, we trained and compared feedforward and recurrent Spiking Neural Networks (SNNs) offline using Backpropagation Through Time (BPTT) with surrogate gradients, then we deployed them on the Intel Loihi neuromorphic chip for fast and efficient inference. We compared our approach to standard classifiers, in particular to the Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) deployed on the embedded NVIDIA Jetson GPU, in terms of classification accuracy, power, energy consumption, and delay. Our results show that the LSTM reaches ~97% of accuracy, outperforming the recurrent SNN by ~17% when using continuous frame-based data instead of event-based inputs. However, the recurrent SNN on Loihi with event-based inputs is ~500 times more energy-efficient than the LSTM on Jetson, requiring a total power of only ~30 mW. This work proposes a new benchmark for tactile sensing and highlights the challenges and opportunities of event-based encoding, neuromorphic hardware, and spike-based computing for spatio-temporal pattern recognition at the edge.
