1. Parasitic gastropod bioerosion trace fossil on Cenomanian oysters from Le Mans, France and its ichnologic and taphonomic context

Abstract: We describe and name Loxolenichnus stellatocinctus Breton and Wisshak igen. et isp. nov., a bioerosion trace fossil on an Upper Cenomanian oyster from Le Mans (France). This trace is attributed here to a parasitic gastropod. The characteristics of this ichnospecies are a combination of one or several, vertical or oblique, complete penetrations, and an asymmetrical attachment etching (fixichnion) with a diagnostic set of stellate grooves increasingly distinct towards the margin of the trace. By including two former Oichnus ichnospecies, Loxolenichnus halo comb. nov. and Loxolenichnus taddei comb. nov., Oichnus, is now constrained to pure predation traces (praedichnia). The numerous oysters collected from the Marnes à Pycnodonte biauriculata Formation show associated epibionts and encrusters as well as borers and scrapers. Encrusters comprise 24 taxa while bioerosion trace fossils comprise 17 ichnotaxa ranging from very rare (< 0.1%) to quite abundant (81%). The taphonomic history leading to an ex-situ condensation of these oysters is complex. Both the Gnathichnus and Entobia ichnofacies are represented on the shellgrounds, presumably alternatingly.

2. Study of the Histology of Leafy Axes and Male Cones of Glenrosa carentonensis sp. nov. (Cenomanian Flints of Charente-Maritime, France) Using Synchrotron Microtomography Linked with Palaeoecology.

Abstract: We report exceptionally well-preserved plant remains ascribed to the extinct conifer Glenrosa J. Watson et H.L. Fisher emend. V. Srinivasan inside silica-rich nodules from the Cenomanian of the Font-de-Benon quarry, Charente-Maritime, western France. Remains are preserved in three dimensions and mainly consist of fragmented leafy axes. Pollen cones of this conifer are for the first time reported and in some cases remain connected to leafy stems. Histology of Glenrosa has not previously been observed; here, most of internal tissues and cells are well-preserved and allow us to describe a new species, Glenrosa carentonensis sp. nov., using propagation phase-contrast X-ray synchrotron microtomography, a non-destructive technique. Leafy axes consist of characteristic helically arranged leaves bearing stomatal crypts. Glenrosa carentonensis sp. nov. differs from the other described species in developing a phyllotaxy 8/21, claw-shaped leaves, a thicker cuticle, a higher number of papillae and stomata per crypt. Pollen cones consist of peltate, helically arranged microsporophylls, each of them bearing 6-7 pollen sacs. The new high resolution tomographic approach tested here allows virtual palaeohistology on plants included inside a dense rock to be made. Most tissues of Glenrosa carentonensis sp. nov. are described. Lithological and palaeontological data combined with xerophytic features of Glenrosa carentonensis sp. nov. suggest that this conifer has been adapted to survive in harsh and instable environments such as coastal area exposed to hot, dry conditions.

3. Two new wedge-shaped beetles in Albo-Cenomanian ambers of France (Coleoptera: Ripiphoridae: Ripiphorinae)

Abstract: Paleoripiphorus deploegi gen. n., sp. n. and Macrosiagon ebboi sp. n., described from two French Albo-Cenomanian ambers (mid Cretaceous), are the oldest definitely identified representatives of the Ripiphoridae: Ripiphorinae. They belong to or are closely related to extant genera of this coleopteran subfamily. Together with Myodites burmiticus Cockerell, 1917 from the Albian Burmese amber, they demonstrate that the group is distinctly older than suggested by the hitherto available fossil record. By inference after the biology of the extant Ripiphorinae, Macrosiagon ebboi may have been parasitic on wasps and Paleoripiphorus deploegi on bees, suggesting that Apoidea may have been present in the Lower Cretaceous.

Abstract: International audience; Amber and plant remains were discovered in the lower Cenomanian lignitic clay from La Gripperie-Saint-Symphorien (Charente-Maritime, western France). The amber mainly consists of scarce and infracentimetric pieces showing a wide range of sizes and colours. The shape of the amber grains greatly varies, including more or less cylindrical fragments of flows and spherical drops. Plants consist of foliar remains corresponding to isolated pinnae and pinnules of ferns (Matonia sp., Weichselia reticulata (Stokes & Webb, 1824) Fontaine emend. Alvin, 1971), leafy axes of conifers (Geinitzia reichenbachii (Geinitz, 1842) Hollick & Jeffrey, 1909, Pagiophyllum sp.) and leaves of angiosperms (including cf. Eucalyptolaurus depreii Coiffard, B.Gomez, Thiébaut & J.Kvaček and three morphotypes of undeterminable leaves). They are preserved as isolated cuticles, charcoalified compressions without cuticle, and external casts. Angiosperms are clearly the most abundant and diverse remains of the plant assemblage. This latter contrasts with most of Albian-Cenomanian coastal floras from the Aquitaine Basin, which are dominated by gymnosperms characterised by xeromorphic adaptations and tolerating halophytic conditions. Similar to the coeval sites of Puy-Puy (Charente-Maritime) and Jaunay-Clan (Vienne), the plant-rich clay from La Gripperie-Saint-Symphorien was probably deposited in innermost coastal environments heavily influenced by inland/continental freshwater.; De l’ambre et des plantes ont été découverts dans les argiles ligniteuses du Cénomanien inférieur de La Gripperie-Saint-Symphorien (Charente-Maritime, Ouest de la France). L’ambre correspond principalement à de rares pièces infracentimétriques qui montrent une large gamme de tailles et de couleurs. La forme des grains varie beaucoup, incluant des fragments de coulées plus ou moins cylindriques, ainsi que des gouttes sphériques. Les plantes correspondent à des pennes et pinnules isolées de fougères (Matonia sp., Weichselia reticulata (Stokes & Webb, 1824) Fontaine emend. Alvin, 1971), des axes feuillés de conifères (Geinitzia reichenbachii (Geinitz, 1842) Hollick & Jeffrey, 1909, Pagiophyllum sp.), ainsi que des feuilles d’angiospermes (incluant cf. Ceci contraste avec la plupart des flores littorales de l’Albien-Cénomanien du Bassin Aquitain, dominées par des gymnospermes montrant des adaptations xéromorphiques ainsi qu’une tolérance aux conditions halophytiques. Similairement aux sites contemporains de Puy-Puy (Charente-Maritime) et Jaunay-Clan (Vienne), les argiles à plantes de La Gripperie-Saint-Symphorien ont probablement été déposées dans des environnements côtiers plutôt internes et fortement influencés par de l’eau douce.

5. Elliptical body fossils from the Fortunian (Early Cambrian) of Normandy (NW France)

Abstract: Body fossils have been discovered in the Fortunian deposits of the Rozel Cape, in Normandy (NWFrance). The material consists of about 80specimens preserved on a shale surface, recently observed at the base of a cliff at the Cap Rozel, in the Cotentin region. The fossils, centimetric in size, have an elliptical outline, with a peripheral bulge, generally without other conspicuous ornamentation, but showing sometimes concentric or radial lines possibly of taphonomic origins. In addition, these body fossils are preserved parallel to the bedding plane, locally rich in horizontal trace fossils (e.g. Archaeonassa Fenton& Fenton, 1937, Helminthoidichnites Fitch, 1850, Helminthopsis Heer, 1877) and also complex treptichinids burrows (e.g.Treptichnus pedum (Seilacher, 1955)) sometimes associated with microbial mats. The sedimentological characteristics of these deposits (ripple marks, syneresis cracks) correspond to a shallow marine shelf environment, with a variable hydrodynamism in the intertidal zone, low for surfaces showing elliptic fossils and syneresis cracks, higher for surfaces with ripple marks. These new discoveries unravel the potential of the Fortunian strata from Normandy and provide new information about the early Cambrian biocenoses.

Abstract: International audience; PremiseThe conifer Geinitzia reichenbachii was a common member of the Cretaceous Laurasian floras. However, the histology of G. reichenbachii leafy axes was never described in detail, and our knowledge of its paleoecology remains very limited. Using new and exquisitely preserved silicified material from the Upper Cretaceous of western France, we describe G. reichenbachii from the gross morphology to the cellular scale, then discuss paleoecological and taphonomical implications.MethodsWe examined specimens from two localities in western France (Claix and Moragne) using propagation phase-contrast X-ray synchrotron microtomography.ResultsThe cuticle and the inner tissues of leafy axes are preserved in three dimensions. Epidermis, hypodermis, palisade parenchyma, spongy parenchyma, transfusion tracheids, and most of tissues of the vascular cylinder are clearly discernible. The numerous resin ducts are sometimes filled by persisting resin. Additionally, surfaces of some leaves preserved drops and flows of resin.ConclusionsDepositional environmental context combined with histological features of G. reichenbachii suggest that this conifer was adapted to a range of marginal-littoral ecosystems including those open to the sea paleoenvironments and innermost ones influenced by strong continental inputs. Geinitzia reichenbachii was adapted to withstand intense sunlight, hot temperatures coupled with salty sea wind, and dry conditions. The frequent amber-bearing beds in the Cretaceous from western France with Geinitzia as a main component of the associated floras raises the possibility of a role for Geinitzia in the production of the “Charentese amber”.

Abstract: Since the 1980s, the Upper Jurassic lithographic limestone of the Causse Méjean (southern France) has been known by local naturalists to yield fossils. However, until the beginning of the 21st century, this plattenkalk remained largely undersampled and scientifically underestimated. Here, we present the results of two decades of prospection and sampling in the Drigas and the Nivoliers quarries. We provide the first palaeontological inventory of the fossil flora, the fauna and the ichnofauna for these localities. The fossil assemblages show the co-occurrence of marine and terrestrial organisms. Marine organisms include algae, bivalves, brachiopods, cephalopods (ammonites, belemnites and coleoids such as Trachyteuthis), echinoderms, decapod crustaceans (ghost shrimps, penaeoid shrimps and glypheoid lobsters) and fishes (including several actinopterygians and a coelacanth). Terrestrial organisms consist of plant remains (conifers, bennettitaleans, pteridosperms) and a single rhynchocephalian (Kallimodon cerinensis). Ichnofossils comprise traces of marine invertebrates (e.g. limulid trackways, ammonite touch mark) as well as coprolites and regurgitalites. Given the exquisite preservation of these fossils, the two quarries can be considered as Konservat-Lagerstätten. Both lithological features and fossil content suggest a calm, protected and shallow-marine environment such as a lagoon partially or occasionally open to the sea. Most fossils are allochthonous to parautochthonous and document diverse ecological habitats. Similarly to other famous Upper Jurassic plattenkalks of western Europe such as Solnhofen, Cerin or Canjuers, the Causse Méjean is a key landmark for our understanding of coastal/lagoonal palaeoecosystems during the Kimmeridgian–Tithonian interval.

Abstract: International audience; Fragments of filled wood‐borings were recently discovered from the Eocene–Oligocene Conglomerate and Sandstone Formation of the Malzieu Basin (Lozère, southern France). Propagation phase‐contrast X‐ray synchrotron microtomography (PPC‐SRμCT) was used to characterize their hidden inner structures. Virtual 2D sections and 3D reconstructions show that the inner microstructures of borings display a mudstone–wackestone siliceous matrix including tiny coprolites. The hexagonal cross‐section of these coprolites is characteristic of termite faecal pellets. Morphology and dimensions of the coprolites share strong similarities with those of extant Kalotermitidae (drywood termites). The depositional environment is interpreted as a fluvial valley in which the lenticular sandstone and conglomerate lenses correspond to channels. This discovery complements the record of Palaeogene termites which remain poor in France and throughout the world.

Abstract: International audience; Plants and insects are the two dominant groups in terrestrial ecosystems, and insect damage on fossil plants is the only direct evidence documenting the past ecological history between these two, hyperdiverse groups. We describe, analyze, and interpret plant–insect interactions of a lower Cenomanian paleoforest from western France – the Puy-Puy Quarry of the Nouvelle-Aquitaine Region. We examined 1605 fossil leaves, axes, and reproductive material of bennettitalean, pinalean, and ginkgoalean gymnosperms; lauralean and magnolialean angiosperms; and pteridophyte fronds. We identified functional feeding groups (FFGs) and insect damage types (DTs) preserved on this foliage and data were rarified to indicate sample completeness. By employing R, various statistical parameters were calculated. We established 71 DTs for the nine FFGs of hole feeding, margin feeding, skeletonization, surface feeding, oviposition, piercing and sucking, galling, mining, and pathogens, and 1292 feeding event occurrences. Of the specimens examined 22.2% exhibited one or more DT, with angiosperms the most affected plant group. The most diverse interactions were mining and galling, indicating a mosaic of humid and xeric habitats, respectively, for the Puy-Puy paleoforest, a conclusion consistent with previous paleontological and sedimentological interpretations. Elevated DT richness suggests long-standing ecological relationships between the plants and insects, representative of a mature forest.

Abstract: International audience; The presence of “geological” amber (or “succin” in old French monographs) has been reported for several centuries in the Mesozoic deposits of Provence, southeastern France. Diverse amber-bearing sites were inventoried by the authors but their location and stratigraphical context remain unclear for most of them. In the past decades, various data concerning chemistry, palaeontological content and comparison with archaeological discoveries improved our knowledge of the ambers of Provence, but only those of Cretaceous age. The present paper aims at providing a comprehensive description of all the presently known amber-bearing deposits of Provence, including the description of new sites. We highlight the great potential of Provence ambers and allow to consider a wider time range, from the Early Cretaceous to the Miocene.; La présence d’ambre « géologique » ou « succin » a été signalée en Provence depuis plusieurs siècles. Un certain nombre de gisements ambrifères crétacés, plus ou moins bien localisés précisément, avaient été ainsi répertoriés. Plus récemment des données variées concernant la chimie, le contenu paléontologique, la comparaison avec des ambres archéologiques ont amené à mieux connaître les ambres, uniquement d’âge crétacé, de la région. La présente revue des gisements ambrifères de Provence, incluant la découverte de nouveaux sites ambrifères, permet de mettre en évidence le potentiel en ambre de la Provence et d’envisager un large éventail de temps jusqu’à présent inenvisagé allant du Crétacé inférieur au Miocène.

Abstract: In northwestern France, the Brioverian series is a thick siliciclastic succession deposited during the Cadomian cycle (c. 750–540 Ma). In the uppermost Brioverian beds, previous studies unravelled an assemblage dominated by simple horizontal trace fossils associated with microbially stabilized surfaces. Here, we report Spirodesmos trace fossils – one-way, irregular and regular horizontal spirals – from Crozon (Finistère, Brittany), Montfort-sur-Meu and St-Gonlay (Ille-et-Vilaine, Brittany). After reviewing the literature on horizontal spiral trace fossils, an Ediacaran–Fortunian Spirodesmos pool is identified from marginal-marine to shelf settings, while an Ordovician–Recent trend formed in the deep-marine realm. These results suggest that an onshore–offshore migration in Spirodesmos took place during Ediacaran–Fortunian to Ordovician time, similar to what happened in graphoglyptids. In addition, the age of the uppermost Brioverian beds (Ediacaran or early Cambrian) is still a pending question. Here, we report two new U–Pb detrital zircon datings from sandstone samples in St-Gonlay, giving maximum deposition ages of 551 ± 7 Ma and 540 ± 5 Ma. Although these results do not discard an Ediacaran age for the uppermost Brioverian beds, a Fortunian age is envisioned because the new dating corroborates previous dating from Brittany, Mayenne and Normandy. However, the intervals of error of the radiometric dating, and the dominance of non-penetrative trace fossils associated with matgrounds (an ecology more typical of the Ediacaran Period), do not allow definitive conclusions on the age of the uppermost Brioverian beds.

Abstract: International audience; Ediacaran-Cambrian bioturbation on bedding planes provides physical and chemical data about the environmental conditions and biological activities of early metazoans. We propose a quantitative method to estimate horizontal disruption of the substrate using bedding-plane trace fossils from Brioverian deposits. This methodology provides the first quantitative analysis of the trace fossil assemblage from the Armorican Massif (Brittany, NW of France). The Ediacaran-Cambrian transition within the Brioverian series is characterized by the abundance of simple and horizontal trace fossils such as Helminthopsis, Helminthoidichnites, and Palaeophycus as well as rare Gordia and Spirodesmos. Recent U-Pb dating has been carried out on detrital zircon grains from the upper Brioverian series suggesting a late Ediacaran to Fortunian age of the fossiliferous deposits (ca. 550 to 530 Ma). With Arc-Gis software, we use a semi-quantitative approach to estimate the relative 2D bioturbation rate recorded on bedding planes. The dataset is used to discuss the feeding strategies and how the seafloor ecospace was colonized by the early bilaterian metazoans. This approach combines new values such as: the length of a trace fossil, the surface of a trace, the cumulative length, and the cumulative surfaces from all of the ichnofossils recorded on the same slate surface, to finally suggest that the bioturbation rate of the microbial grazers impacted the use of the seafloor ecospaces and feeding strategies through the biomats.; La bioturbation visible en surface de banc dans les dépôts édiacariens-cambriens fournit des informations physiques et chimiques concernant les conditions environnementales et les activités biologiques des premiers métazoaires. Nous proposons une méthode quantitative pour estimer la bioturbation horizontale du substrat à partir des traces fossiles préservées sur des plaques de schistes provenant des dépôts briovériens de Bretagne, dans le Massif Armoricain (N-O France). Le passage Ediacarien-Cambrien au sein de la série briovérienne est documenté par l’abondance de traces fossiles horizontales simples telles que les ichnogenres Helminthopsis, Helminthoidichnites et Palaeophycus et la présence, plus rare, de Gordia et Spirodesmos. De récentes datations U-Pb réalisées sur des zircons détritiques du Briovérien supérieur ont révélé un âge s’étalant entre l’Ediacarien tardif et le début du Fortunien pour ces dépôts fossilifères (ca. 550 à 530 Ma). Avec une approche semi-quantitative, menée avec le logiciel Arc-Gis, nous avons estimé la bioturbation 2D relative visible en surface des niveaux schisteux. Les données obtenues permettent de discuter les stratégies d’alimentation et la colonisation de l’éco-espace benthique par les premiers métazoaires bilatériens. Cette approche combine des nouvelles données : la longueur d’une trace fossile et sa surface, la longueur et la surface cumulées des traces présentes sur une même surface de banc (ou plaques de schistes), et donne finalement une idée relative de la densité en organismes présents sur le substrat, tout en suggérant que le taux de bioturbation a impacté la répartition des organismes brouteurs et les stratégies d’alimentation à travers les biomats.

15. Variations in Jurassic echinoid biodiversity at ammonite zone levels: Stratigraphical and palaeoecological significance

Abstract: After a relatively low but stable phase of taxonomic diversity during the Lias (Lower Jurassic), echinoids diversity strongly increases from Aalenian (Dogger-Middle Jurassic) to Kimmeridgian (Malm-Late Jurassic) and a conspicuous crisis takes place in Tithonian times, before the end of the Jurassic. During these major phases, minor decreases in diversity correspond with regressions (sea-level falls), mainly in the Middle Bathonian (Middle Jurassic). From the Aalenian to Callovian, the average duration of irregular echinoid species is about 3.8 m.y. whereas it is about 5.5 m.y. for the regular ones; the later value corresponding to the average duration of a Jurassic. From Callovian to Tithonian, it is respectively 5.3 m.y. and 8.3 m.y. The longest durations corresponds to reefal species or species found in coarse bioclastic platform deposits (Holectypoids, 16 m.y.; Cidaridae, 18 m.y.) but also to taxa insufficiently studied. Conversely, in the restricted area investigated (Paris Basin, Aquitanian and South East Basins in France), some taxa have a very short time span (Centropygus petitclerci, 1 m.y.; Acropeltis aequituberculata, 1 m.y.) which is comparable to that of an ammonite biozone. So, if these data are also true for other countries, such taxa would be used as time markers in biostratigraphy.

Abstract: International audience; The Puy-Puy quarry at Tonnay-Charente (Charente-Maritime, SW France) is a sand quarry exposing a 9-m-thick series of latest Albian–earliest Cenomanian (mid-Cretaceous) age. The uppermost Albian deposits consist of lignitic clay containing fossiliferous amber. The lowermost Cenomanian sand deposits alternate with clay intercalations containing plant remains. One of these clay levels, named P1, shows an outstanding accumulation of conifer and angiosperm macrofossils including delicate reproductive structures such as flowers. Plant remains are associated with invertebrates such as insects (Odonata, Dictyoptera, Diptera), crustaceans (Mecochirus sp.), putative brachiopods (aff. Lingula sp.), and worms. A few vertebrate remains such as shark egg capsules (Palaeoxyris sp.) and a feather are present in the fossil assemblage, as well as an enigmatic specimen tentatively interpreted as a cephalochordate or a petromyzontiform. Various ichnofossils occur in abundance, such as crustacean coprolites and burrows (Ophiomorpha isp.), insect coprolites (Microcarpolithes hexagonalis), and leaves with grazing structures, galls and mines. The sediments have been deposited in a coastal, calm and brackish area.

Abstract: International audience; The origin of the diatoms still remains enigmatic. Their fossil record is scarce until the Late Cretaceous and great divergences exist between molecular data and the earliest fossil evidence. While molecular data indicate an origin during the Triassic or Early Jurassic, early fossil evidence is only from the Late Jurassic-Early Cretaceous. The discovery of diatoms in French mid-Cretaceous amber by the end of the 2000s already suggested a potential bias in the diatom fossil record as it made older many diatom lineages, the record of which hitherto began at the end of the Cretaceous. The Jurassic/Early Cretaceous fossil record of diatoms is extremely sparse and any new occurrence is important for retracing the evolutionary, palaeogeographical and palaeoenvironmental history of diatoms. Thai amber has yielded a new diatom specimen that has been attributed to the genus Hemiaulus . Fossil assemblages and sedimentological data indicate that Thai amber and its Hemiaulus specimen are Late Jurassic in age. This discovery represents the oldest hitherto known specimen of Hemiaulus and so extends the fossil record of the bipolar diatoms and of the genus Hemiaulus by several dozens of millions of years and brings closer the fossil evidence and molecular data (that estimated an origin of the bipolar diatoms about 150 Ma ago). It reinforces the hypothesis of a pre-Cretaceous fossil diatom records and also supports an origin of the diatoms in shallow coastal environments.; L’origine des diatomées reste toujours énigmatique. Leur registre fossile est rare jusqu’au Crétacé supérieur et il existe de grandes différences entre les données moléculaires et les premières évidences fossiles du groupe. Tandis que les données moléculaires indiquent une origine durant le Trias ou le Jurassique inférieur, les plus anciennes traces fossiles sont seulement de la fin du Jurassique, début du Crétacé. La découverte de diatomées dans l’ambre médio-crétacé français à la fin des années 2000 avait déjà suggéré un potentiel biais dans le registre fossile des diatomées car cela vieillissait plusieurs lignées précédemment connues uniquement à partir du Crétacé supérieur. Le registre fossile des diatomées du Jurassique et du Crétacé inférieur est extrêmement limité et toute nouvelle occurrence est importante pour retracer l’histoire évolutive, paléogéographique et paléoenvironnementale des diatomées. L’ambre de Thaïlande a permis la découverte d’un nouveau spécimen de diatomée attribué au genre Hemiaulus . Les données paléontologiques et sédimentologiques attestent que l’ambre thaïlandais et la diatomée qu’il contient sont d’âge Jurassique supérieur. Cette découverte représente le plus ancien spécimen du genre Hemiaulus connu à présent et étend donc le registre fossile des diatomées bipolaires et du genre Hemiaulus de plusieurs dizaines de millions d’années et rapproche ainsi le registre fossile des données moléculaires (qui estimaient l’origine des diatomées bipolaires à environ 150 millions d’années). Cela renforce l’hypothèse d’un registre fossile pré-crétacé et soutient une origine des diatomées au sein d’environnements marins néritiques.

Abstract: International audience; Ants exhibit a plethora of ecological interactions with terrestrial plants. These interactions are broadly surveyed in modern ecosystems, but are much more difficult to unveil in the fossil record. Here, we report a unique ant–conifer association preserved in an opaque piece of 100‐million‐year‐old amber from Charentes in Western France, revealed by propagation phase‐contrast X‐ray synchrotron microtomography (PPC‐SRμCT). Most legs of the ant encircle the conifer twig, and the arthropod harbours a hooked position onto the leafy axis. The conifer is assigned to Glenrosa carentonensis Moreau, Néraudeau, Tafforeau and Dépré, whereas the ant is ascribed to Gerontoformica occidentalis Perrichot, Nel, Néraudeau, Lacau and Guyot. The purpose of this study was to discuss diverse hypotheses that could explain the natural association of these fossils (including random and ecological associations) and its palaeoecological implications. While a mutualistic interaction between Gerontoformica and Glenrosa cannot be unambiguously demonstrated here, these associates raise questions on the ant–conifer interactions during the early ant evolution.

Abstract: Fossil inclusions of arthropods and microorganisms are abundant in the Cretaceous amber from western France, but plant meso- or macroremains are scarce. Preserved remains are mostly tiny, very fragmented, and indeterminable. Only one amber locality in the Charente department has already provided conifer remains. Here, we report the first plant mesoremains ensnared in Cenomanian amber from Fouras – Bois Vert, in the Charente-Maritime department. They consist of three well-preserved leafy axes and one cone of Cheirolepidiacean conifers. Based on the helical arrangement of rhomboidal, longer than wide, and highly adpressed leaves, leafy axes are ascribed to the genus Pagiophyllum. The ovoid cone bears more than 15 imbricate, helically arranged, scale-like leaves and is ascribed to Classostrobus sp. Although Cretaceous flora is abundant in lignitic clay from the Charentes region, Pagiophyllum is reported for the first time in Albian-Cenomanian deposits from this area. Xerophytic features of Pagiophyllum further support a harsh and instable coastal environment seasonally exposed to hot, dry conditions during the mid-Cretaceous in the Charentes region.

Abstract: International audience; Further to the work published by Néraudeau et al. six years ago, palynological matter recovered from the lignitic bone bed of Angeac in Charente (south-west France) has been re-examined in order to provide more evidence of its age, the previous Hauterivian–Barremian interpretation being regarded as controversial. The samples come from four sedimentological units, An2–An5, which together yielded an assemblage of 34 species, taxonomically dominated by palaeoecologically significant lygodiaceous verrucate spores, including eight species attributable to the genus Concavissimisporites and three species of Trilobosporites. A few bisaccate pollen grains, including Vitreisporites pallidus, have been recovered, but the gymnospermous pollen spectrum is clearly dominated by the cheirolepidiaceous genus Classopollis, its abundance diminishing progressively upwards from units An4 to An2. The great abundance and diversity of verrucate forms, along with the presence of other spores typical of Lower Cretaceous deposits, such as Aequitriradites verrucosus, and the scarcity of specimens referable to Cicatricosisporites, render this assemblage most similar to those of the Hastings Group of southern England, and the Bückeberg Formation in north-western Germany. The time of deposition is, therefore, more likely to have been Berriasian–Valanginian rather than Hauterivian–Barremian, as previously stated. The associated small assemblage of megaspores is consistent with this determination. Except for Trilobosporites and Concavissimisporites, the use of several other genera commonly applied to Mesozoic verrucate spores, such as Converrucosisporites and Impardecispora, is considered unnecessary. To support this assertion, a Principal Components Analysis has been carried out on 120 verrucate spores from sedimentological units An2–4, taking into account ten morphological variables. The results show that specimens attributable to Trilobosporites are well be separated from the main cluster, which corresponds to Concavissimisporites, underlining the futility of using more than two genera for the species concerned.

Abstract: International audience; Late Jurassic and Early Cretaceous charophyte assemblages from the northern part of the Aquitaine Basin in south-west France are reviewed here to understand their palaeoecological, palaeobiogeographical and biostratigraphic features. Three sites were studied: the Tithonian-lower Berriasian of Chassiron, and the Berriasian of Cherves-de-Cognac and Angeac-Charente. Abundant porocharaceans, less abundant clavatoraceans and scarce characeans recorded in Cherves-de-Cognac and Angeac-Charente indicate that brackish water environments were substituted by freshwater environments eastwards. The occurrence of Clavator grovesii var. grovesii and morphotypes intermediate with C. grovesii var. discordis in the same areas is significant from a biostratigraphic viewpoint, since these species belong to the Maillardii, Incrassatus and Nurrensis European charophyte biozones, representing the Berriasian. This observation refutes a previous dating of the Angeac-Charente site and highlights the absence of Hauterivian–Barremian records in northern Aquitaine, which is in contrast to the more complete Lower Cretaceous record in southern Aquitaine. These contrasting records could be due to differences in the available sedimentary space produced by the opening of the Bay of Biscay during the Barremian.

Abstract: Since the end of the XXth century, the palaeontological site of Archingeay-Les Nouillers (Charente-Maritime, western France) continued to afford Albian-Cenomanian (ca 93–113 Ma) plant meso- and macroremains. The successive excavations provided numerous specimens useful for the reconstruction of mid-Cretaceous coastal forest ecosystems. However, one of the most remarkable features of this locality is the diversity of plant preservations. Unique in Europe from this point of view, the fossiliferous site of Archingeay-Les Nouillers yielded compressions with or without cuticle, impressions/imprints, and silicified permineralizations/petrifications. The quality of the silicified tissues and the cell preservation allow this locality to be considered as a plant Konservat-Lagerstatte.

Abstract: Resume Un nouveau genre et une nouvelle espece d’echinide de la famille des Archiaciidae sont decrits dans le Cenomanien de la Sarthe (Basin de Paris, France). Le genre Ulphaceaster nov. gen. se distingue des autres Archiaciidae par son ambulacre impair qui echancre l’avant du test en une profonde gouttiere allant du peristome jusqu’au sommet du test ou celui-ci s’elargit en forme de cuillere. La digitation apicale est plus haute et plus gracile que dans les especes du genre proche Claviaster. L’espece Uphaceaster sarthacensis sp. nov. n’a ete trouvee que sur le site de Saint-Ulphace, (Formation des Sables et Gres de Lamnay, carriere de La Garenne), ou elle est presente dans un facies calcareo-sableux de depots marins peu profonds de l’etage infralittoral.

Abstract: A palynological analysis of 45 samples from six mid-Cretaceous amber-bearing outcrops from Charentes has been carried out. A total of 227 taxa have been recorded in the studied palynofloras. Palynological data support earlier evidence and indicate an early Cenomanian age for the assemblages. The heterogeneous compositions of the palynofloral assemblages indicate the existence of different coastal depositional settings with a variable but usually weak marine influence. The local vegetation was subdivided in various types including herbaceous formations integrating ferns and eudicots which may have colonised frequently-disturbed, fluvial, open environments and xeric arboreal communities dominated by Cheirolepidiaceae and probably integrating drought- and/or salt-tolerant angiosperms and ferns (Anemiaceae and Gleicheniaceae) and other gymnosperms (Araucariaceae, Ginkgoales and scarce Cycadales and Gnetales). The existence of riparian and freshwater wetland communities integrating taxodioids, aquatic and/or hygrophilous angiosperms, ferns, lycopods, mosses and clubmosses is proposed. Coastal/?lagoonal counterparts including plants tolerant to periodical floods by saline or brackish waters is suggested by palynological evidence. Conifer forests mainly integrating Pinaceae and Podocarpaceae in raised hinterlands may also be interpreted on the basis of taphonomical considerations. The wide variety of depositional settings inferred by the palynological data support enhanced transport capabilities for amber and/or a widespread occurrence of producers in local vegetation during the early Cenomanian.

Abstract: International audience; A new vertebrate ichnological assemblage is described from the Hettangian Dolomitic Formation of the Causses Basin, at Le Serre (Lozère, southern France). We report tracks that complement the poor fossil record of lowermost Jurassic crocodylomorphs in Europe. Tetradactyl pes and pentadactyl manus imprints form a unique trackway. Traces are ascribed to Batrachopus isp. and they represent the third occurrence of this ichnogenus in European Hettangian geological formations. This is the first report of Batrachopus in Hettangian deposits of the Causses Basin. The tracks share some similarities with Batrachopus deweyi previously described from the Sinemurian of the Causses Basin. Crocodylomorph tracks co-occur with tridactyl dinosaur traces assigned to Dilophosauripus williamsi and Grallator isp. The sedimentology and palaeoichnology of the tracksite indicate that the depositional environment was a tidal to supratidal flat marsh that was emerged periodically. The ichnological assemblage from Le Serre and a synthesis of ichnotaxa co-occurring with Batrachopus in the European lowermost Jurassic tracksites confirm that crocodylomorphs living in marginal-littoral palaeoenvironments were part of theropod-dominated faunas, together with ornithopods but apparently without sauropods.

Abstract: International audience; Cretaceous fossil inclusions were recently discovered in silica-rich nodules from the diachronic alteritic deposits of the Moragne hill, Charente-Maritime, western France. Nodules contain marine organisms such as sponge spicules, putative algae, echinoids (Periaster undulatus Agassiz and Desor) and rudists (Sphaerulites foliaceus Lamarck; hippuritids and radiolitids). These inclusions co-occur with fragmented pin-nae of ferns as well as diverse structures of conifers including leafy axes (Geinitzia sp.; Glenrosa carentonensis Moreau, Néraudeau, Tafforeau and Dépré) and isolated ovu-late scales or subtending bracts of cones. The palaeontological assemblage shows that the alterites from Moragne are condensed deposits resulting from the alteration of the Cenomanian to Turonian-Senonian regional series. Conifer leafy axes display diverse kinds of preservation: permineralization in silica, empty external casts of the gross morphology, and casts filled by ferruginous siltstone. Propagation phase-contrast X-ray synchrotron microtomography revealed exceptional preservation of some leafy axes up to the cell level. We support a multi-phase silicification including at least: (1) a precocious phase occurring during the sedimentation of the Upper Cretaceous deposits or during the earliest diagenesis, and that could be linked with the abundance of sponge spicules; then (2) a late phase occurring during Eocene-Oligocene period that corresponds to a hard climate event with strong and long paedogenitic alteration associated with an important phase of silicification (nodulation). The alterites from Moragne are an uncommon example of long-term time-averaged deposits caused by compac-tion and selective dissolution of matrix in the context of a late continental weathering.

Abstract: International audience; We describe here the palynological content from the lower Cenomanian plant-rich site of Jaunay-Clan (Vienne, western France), a site that previously yielded exceptional leaf impressions. Altogether, 184 species of palynomorphs have been identified, and two palynological intervals were recognized in the sedimentary sequence. The lower interval is characterized by the taxonomical and numerical dominance of spores of Gleicheniaceae, Cyatheales, and Anemiaceae, while the upper interval is characterized by an abrupt increase in the abundance of Classopollis and the appearance of dinocysts. This shift in the palynological composition, coupled with paleobotanical observations, is interpreted as reflecting a transition from a calm freshwater environment, with occasional droughts to an environment more open to very occasional marine inputs, such as an inner lagoon.The association of Tehamadinium coummia, Trichodinium spinosum, Tricolpites nemejcii, Retitricolporites decorosus, and Microreticulatiporites sacalii, coupled with the absence of Normapolles pollen grains, suggests that the Jaunay-Clan assemblage is early Cenomanian in age, corroborating the previous determination based on lithological and paleontological proxies. However, the Jaunay-Clan palynoflora is considered to be slightly younger than the numerous earliest Cenomanian assemblages described from Charente-Maritime, owing to its resemblance with mid-lower Cenomanian palynofloras from western France. The paleoflora and palynoflora from Jaunay-Clan are similar to other assemblages found in the upper Albian of Spain (Teruel Province), and in the Cenomanian of France and Czech Republic (Peruc-Korycany Formation, La Buzinie, Archingeay). The combined Jaunay-Clan palynoflora and paleoflora is considered to be the most diversified Cenomanian paleobotanical-palynological assemblage described so far in Western Europe.

Abstract: International audience; Inflorescences of Mauldinia (Lauraceae) are described from the middle Cenomanian Pauletian facies of Gard, Languedoc-Roussillon, south-eastern France. This is the first record of the genus from this part of Europe. Mauldinia sp. is described based on peduncles and lateral units. Isolated, slender peduncles show spirally arranged scars or rarely attached lateral units. Isolated lateral units consist of cladode-like structures showing up to seven flower/fruit scars. Some isolated fruits were found associated with peduncles and lateral units. Fruits are ovoid fruits contain a single, elongated seed. The pericarp consists of epicarp, mesocarp and endocarp. The seed consists of two cotyledons containing well-developed reserve cells. Mauldinia sp. from Gard differs from known Mauldinia species by having longer internodes along the peduncle and by the shape of the lateral units. Sedimentological and palaeontological evidence suggests that Mauldinia sp. from Gard grew in a protected, littoral environment with limited marine influence. This report provides new information to the relatively poorly known Cretaceous record of angiosperms in France. The occurrence of Mauldinia in the lower Upper Cretaceous of Gard corroborates the widespread occurrence of the genus in marginal littoral environments during the mid-Cretaceous.

Abstract: International audience; The global palaeobiogeography of early marsupialiform mammals is still poorly understood due to a meagre fossil record outside western North America. Here, two isolated teeth of a marsupialiform mammal from the lowermost Upper Cretaceous (lower Cenomanian) of southwestern France are described and referred to Stagodontidae, a dentally specialized group whose unambiguous members are so far known exclusively from the Upper Cretaceous of North America. The occurrence of stagodontids in Europe represents additional evidence of faunal exchanges between the two landmasses during the latest Albian–early Cenomanian interval, around 100 million years ago, and shows that early (mid-Cretaceous) marsupialiforms were more widely distributed than previously thought

Abstract: International audience; A new Cenomanian amber- and plant-bearing deposit has been discovered at Neau, in the Mayenne department (France). The Cenomanian fossiliferous lignites are located in karst filling in a substratum of Cambrian limestones. The amber corresponds mainly to tiny millimetric grains, devoid of arthropod inclusions, but rich in microorganisms, especially the sheated bacteria Leptotrichites resinatus , and containing pollen grains ( Classopollis ) and wood fibers (Araucariacae or Cheirolepidiaceae). The lignites provide abundant conifer and ginkgoale cuticle fragments ( Frenelopsis , Eretmophyllum ) and a lot of palynomorphs ( e.g. Gleicheniidites senonicu s, Cyathidites , Deltoidospora , Appendicisporites and Cicatricosisporites ). The chemical signature of the amber suggests it was produced by conifers of the extinct family Cheirolepidiaceae. According to the palynological assemblage, the age of the lignites is upper lower Cenomanian or lower mid Cenomanian. The deposit environment corresponded to the upstream portion of a mangrove or the most inner part of a lagoon.; Un nouveau site à ambre et plantes du Cénomanien a été découvert à Neau, en Mayenne (France). Les lignites fossilifères cénomaniens sont localisés dans des remplissages de karsts développés dans des calcaires du Cambrien. L’ambre se présente essentiellement sous forme de grains millimétriques, dépouvus d’inclusions d’arthropode, mais riches en microorganismes, notamment en bactéries gainées de type Leptotrichites resinatus , et contenant des grains de pollen ( Classopollis ) et des fibres de bois (Araucariacae ou Cheirolepidiaceae). Les lignites fournissent d’abondants fragments de cuticules de conifères et de ginkgoales ( Frenelopsis , Eretmophyllum ) et une grande quantité de palynomorphes ( e.g. Gleicheniidites senonicu s, Cyathidites , Deltoidospora , Appendicisporites et Cicatricosisporites ). La signature chimique de l’ambre suggère qu’il a été produit par des conifères de la famille éteinte des Cheirolépidiacées. L’environnement de dépôt correspondait à la partie amont d’une mangrove ou la partie la plus interne d’un lagon.

Abstract: International audience; Body fossils are described for the first time from the Upper Brioverian (Ediacaran-Fortunian) deposits of Central Brittany (NW France). The material consists of a dozen of specimens preserved on two slates, recently collected in a quarry in Saint-Gonlay. The fossils, centimetric in size, have an elliptical and acuminated outline, with a peripheral bulge but without conspicuous concentric or radial lines. These body fossils are preserved in slates that are locally rich in grazing traces, sometimes associated with microbial mats. The sedimentological characteristics of these deposits correspond to a shallow marine shelf environment, with a low to moderate hydrodynamism. Such findings, in concomitance with previous ichnological discoveries, unravel the potential of the Brioverian strata from Brittany as a new locality to provide answers on Ediacaran and early Cambrian biocenoses.

These taxa are also found in younger strata, but upper Berriasian–Valanginian assemblages are characterized by containing more abundant lygodiaceous verrucate spores associated with the appearance of gleicheniaceous Clavifera triplex from the Valanginian onwards. Many genera have been erected to accommodate Mesozoic verrucate spores. The considerable overlap between diagnoses diminishes the stratigraphic significance of the constituent species. Only the genera Concavissimisporites and Trilobosporites are considered useful here. Hauterivian–Barremian assemblages are similar to those of the Valanginian, but differ in the reduction in numbers of verrucate spores and a commensurate increase in abundance of Cicatricosisporites and Appendicisporites associated with the first occurrences of monoaperturate angiosperm pollen grains, such as Clavatipollenites hughesii, within Barremian deposits of northern France. Abstract: International audience; S’appuyant sur les quelques travaux précurseurs publiés par Delcourt et Sprumont, Herngreen, et Koeniguer entre 1959 et 1980, deux campagnes de terrain ont été organisées en mars et juillet 2017 afin d’affiner les connaissances sur la palynoflore des dépôts continentaux du Crétacé Inférieur de l’Avesnois (Nord), du Boulonnais (Pas de Calais) et du Pays de Bray (Oise, Seine-Maritime). 29 échantillons argileux ont été récoltés dans les niveaux néocomiens du Pays de Bray et du Boulonnais, les anciennes carrières de l’Avesnois étant désormais toutes inaccessibles.Des 27 sites et anciennes carrières visitées au Pays de Bray, les échantillons provenant de la sablière de Cuy-Saint-Fiacre (Seine-Maritime) ont livré le contenu palynologique le plus diversifié, 48 espèces ayant pu être identifiées au niveau de la lentille argilo-ligniteuse à la base de la série. L’assemblage est taxonomiquement dominé par des spores de bryophytes, lycophytes et filicophytes fréquemment rencontrées au Crétacé Inférieur, appartenant aux genres Aequitriradites, Coronatispora, Trilobosporites, Ischyosporites, et Concavissimisporites, ainsi que d’autres spores dont la distribution temporelle est plus étendue, telles que Cyathidites australis Couper, Densoisporites microrugulatus Brenner, et Cicatricosisporites spp. Les grains de pollen de gymnospermes sont peu diversifiés mais abondants, en particulier Classopollis torosus (Reissinger) Couper, forme associée aux Cheirolepidiaceae, ainsi que de nombreux grains de pollen disaccates et inaperturés. La présence de Callialasporites dampieri (Balme) Dev, et Taxodiaceaepollenites hiatus (Potonié) Kremp est également notée. Un grain de pollen tricolpé a été rencontré, mais son état de préservation ne permet pas d’être catégorique quant à sa signification au sein de l’assemblage. Deux autres échantillons ont été prélevés dans des lentilles d’argile grise. Ils sont très riches en matière organique amorphe, mais ne contiennent que quelques spores. Les proportions respectives des spores verruquées et cicatricosées au sein de l’assemblage, ainsi que la potentielle présence d’Angiosperme, indiqueraient que l’âge de dépôt, jusqu’alors considéré comme Néocomien, semblerait plus jeune que Berriasien-Valanginien, possiblement Hauterivien.Trois sites ont été échantillonnés au Boulonnais, mais seuls les échantillons prélevés dans une lentille argileuse de l’ancienne carrière de Longueville ont été traités à ce jour. Le contenu palynologique est très similaire à celui de Cuy-Saint-Fiacre, différant cependant par l’augmentation de l’abondance et de la diversité des spores d’Anemiaceae Cicatricosisporites, et par la présence du grain de pollen monoaperturé Clavatipollenites. Ces différences suggèreraient que les sédiments de la carrière de Longueville se sont déposés postérieurement à ceux de Cuy-Saint-Fiacre, possiblement au Barrémien comme suggéré auparavant par Herngreen.

Abstract: International audience; The Ediacaran–Fortunian ichnofauna from Central Brittany (NW France) is revised for the first timesince the pioneering work by Lebesconte at the end of the 19th century. The study is based onfossils from the type-localities of the historical Brioverian taxa Montfortia (traces from Montfortsur-Meu) and Neantia (wrinkle surfaces from Neant-sur-Yvel), and on two new outcrops fromSaint-Gonlay. The ichnofossil assemblage includes Helminthoidichnites tenuis, Helminthopsis tenuis,Gordia marina, Palaeophycus tubularis, ?Neonereites uniserialis, and ?Spirodesmos archimedeus.Locally, the grazing traces are associated with wrinkle surfaces considered as microbially inducedsedimentary structures (MISS). The sedimentological characteristics of these deposits correspond toa shelf marine environment. Both U-Pb datings on detrital zircon and ichnostratigraphic criteriatend toward an Ediacaran age of the fossiliferous deposits, but we cannot exclude the possibility ofa Fortunian age at the present state of knowledge.

Abstract: International audience; Over recent decades, diverse structures ascribed to angiosperms, bennettitaleans, conifers, cycads, ginkgophytes and pteridosperms have been reported from the Cretaceous deposits of the Aquitaine Basin (southwestern France). However, Albian macrofloras remain uncommon in Aquitania as well as in France. The clay from the Archingeay-Les Nouillers quarries is one of the rare deposits of the Aquitaine Basin to yield Albian plant meso- and macro-remains. Although Albian plant-bearing beds are not accessible any more in these quarries, samples collected from excavations conducted at the end of the XXth century were deposited in the collections of the University of Rennes 1. This paper provides a synthesis of the meso- and macro-remains contained in these collections, including angiosperm leaves and leafy conifer axes, dated as Late Albian. Providing here an inventory of the Cretaceous meso- and macro-remains from the Aquitaine Basin, we compare the Albian flora from Archingeay-Les Nouillers with pre-Albian, Albian, Cenomanian, and Turono-Coniacian floras from other localities in southwestern France.

Abstract: International audience; A Cenomanian clay lens in Hucheloup Quarry (Maine-et-Loire, north-western France) has yielded 82 foliar compressions and impressions, of which 62 were identified at several taxonomic levels. The plants are ascribed to diverse Pinales (27%), ferns (27%), Ginkgoales (26%), angiosperms (19%) and Cycadales (1%). The most abundant species in the assemblage are Frenelopsis alata (K. Feistmantel) E. Knobloch emend. J. Kvaček (Pinales) and Eretmophyllum obtusum (Velenovský) J. Kvaček (syn. E. andegavense Pons, Bourreau et Broutin) (Ginkgoales). Wood fragments, along with very well-preserved cuticles, have also been recovered and identified. The specimens are usually very fragmentary, indicating that they had been transported over a significant distance before deposition. The Hucheloup clay was probably deposited in a brackish lagoon or in the lower part of an estuary, possibly in an abandoned channel or on a sandbar. The allochthonous flora represents at least two plant communities that developed in a subtropical–tropical climate, and along a salinity gradient in the vicinity of a fluvial network. Use of the fossil-genus Eretmophyllum Thomas emend. Harris in Harris et al. is considered to be the correct choice for ginkgoalean leaves within European Cenomanian deposits; the genus Nehvizdya Hluštík is regarded as a junior synonym. The clay lens has also yielded a palynological assemblage. Although lacking unequivocal indicators of this age and including some taxa that are more typical of older rocks, the composition of the associated, very small megaspore assemblage recovered is consistent with a Cenomanian determination.; Quatre-vingt-deux compressions et impressions foliaires ont été collectées au sein d’une lentille argileuse cénomanienne située dans la carrière de Hucheloup (Maine-et-Loire, France), 62 d’entre elles ayant pu être identifiées. Les macro-restes observés correspondent à des Pinales (27%), des fougères (27%), des Ginkgoales (26%), des angiospermes (19%) et des Cycadales (1%). Frenelopsis alata (K. Feistmantel) E. La flore, allochtone, comporte des éléments issus de deux communautés végétales distinctes qui se sont développées sous l’influence d’un gradient de salinité aux alentours d’un réseau fluviatile, sous un climat subtropical à tropical. L’attribution des feuilles de Ginkgoales au morpho-genre Eretmophyllum Thomas emend. Harris in Harris et al. au sein des dépôts cénomaniens européens est ici discutée et défendue ; le genre Nehvizdya Hluštík est considéré comme synonyme junior. La lentille argileuse présente également un assemblage palynologique, dont 22 taxons ont été identifiés. Ce dernier est dépourvu d’indicateurs temporels indiscutables et présente des formes typiques de sédiments plus anciens, mais la composition du modeste assemblage associé de mégaspores est cohérent avec un âge cénomanien.

Abstract: International audience; We describe and name Loxolenichnus stellatocinctus Breton and Wisshak igen. et isp. nov., a bioerosion trace fossil on an Upper Cenomanian oyster from Le Mans (France). This trace is attributed here to a parasitic gastropod. The characteristics of this ichnospecies are a combination of one or several, vertical or oblique, complete penetrations, and an asymmetrical attachment etching (fixichnion) with a diagnostic set of stellate grooves increasingly distinct towards the margin of the trace. By including two former Oichnus ichnospecies, Loxolenichnus halo comb. nov. and Loxolenichnus taddei comb. nov., Oichnus, is now constrained to pure predation traces (praedichnia). The numerous oysters collected from the Marnes à Pycnodonte biauriculata Formation show associated epibionts and encrusters as well as borers and scrapers. Encrusters comprise 24 taxa while bioerosion trace fossils comprise 17 ichnotaxa ranging from very rare (< 0.1%) to quite abundant (81%). The taphonomic history leading to an ex-situ condensation of these oysters is complex. Both the Gnathichnus and Entobia ichnofacies are represented on the shellgrounds, presumably alternatingly.

43. Late Jurassic dinosaur footprints from Chassiron–La Morelière (Oléron Island, western France)

Abstract: International audience; A new dinosaur tracksite was recently discovered in the Upper Jurassic deposits from the Oléron Island (Atlantic Ocean, western France). Tracks are located along the coastline in the tidal area of La Morelière near “Pointe de Chassiron”. They were observed in situ in an evaporitic interval from the “Purbeck beds” Unit. Sediments consist of calcite recrystallised after gypsum dissolution within limestone layers which are composed of thin laminites. The track-bearing surface shows abundant mud cracks and some ripple marks. Ichnofossils consist of medium-sized tridactyl footprints of theropods forming a narrow trackway. In order to obtain 3D reconstructions of the track-bearing surface, the trackway was scanned with a resolution of 0.5 mm using an Artec Eva 3D white-light scanner. As indicated by the track dimensions, the probable trackmaker is assigned to a medium-sized non-coelurosaur tetanuran, such as a megalosauroid or an allosauroid theropod. The palaeoenvironmental context is interpreted as a tidal flat in an evaporitic basin. In addition to the tridactyl tracks, we report sauropod- and thyreophoran-like tracks on two other surfaces from Chassiron–La Morelière.

Abstract: Background and Aims Terrestrial plant remains in fossilized tree resin are relatively common. However, histology and preservation of plants entombed in Cretaceous ambers remain poorly known. We report an exquisitely preserved conifer leafy axis from 100-million-year-old opaque amber of western France that is assignable to Glenrosa carentonensis Moreau, Neraudeau, Tafforeau & Depre. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the taphonomy and the use of microtomography for studies of palaeobotanical remains in amber. Methods A leafy axis was examined using propagation phase-contrast X-ray synchrotron microtomography with voxel sizes of 14·9, 1·4, and 0·7 μm. Key Results The conifer leafy axis described is preserved in three dimensions. Despite desiccation of the specimen within the surrounding amber, the cuticle, as well as most of inner tissues, is preserved in three dimensions down to the cellular level. Epidermis, palisade parenchyma, spongy parenchyma, transfusion tracheids and vascular bundles are clearly distinguished. Conclusions Gross morphology and histology of the specimen were revealed using synchrotron microtomography, allowing an unprecedented resolution for the study of soft-bodied plants entombed in amber. The study reveals a peculiar combination of authigenic and duripartic preservation as well as permineralization, and highlights the complexity of taphonomic processes that can occur in amber inclusions. This fossil demonstrates the difficulty of studying amber-preserved plant remains under certain conditions.

Abstract: Stable carbon-isotope geochemistry of fossilized tree resin (amber) potentially could be a very useful tool to infer the composition of past atmospheres. To test the reliability of amber as a proxy for the atmosphere, we studied the variability of modern resin δ 13 C at both local and global scales. An amber δ 13 C curve was then built for the Cretaceous, a period of abundant resin production, and interpreted in light of data from modern resins. Our data show that hardening changes the pristine δ 13 C value by causing a 13 C-depletion in solid resin when compared to fresh liquid–viscous resin, probably due to the loss of 13 C-enriched volatiles. Modern resin δ 13 C values vary as a function of physiological and environmental parameters in ways that are similar to those described for leaves and wood. Resin δ 13 C varies between plant species and localities, within the same tree and between different plant tissues by up to 6‰, and in general increases with increasing altitudes of the plant-growing site. We show that, as is the case with modern resin, Cretaceous amber δ 13 C has a high variability, generally higher than that of other fossil material. Despite the high natural variability, amber shows a negative 2.5–3‰ δ 13 C trend from the middle Early Cretaceous to the Maastrichtian that parallels published terrestrial δ 13 C records. This trend mirrors changes in the atmospheric δ 13 C calculated from the δ 13 C and δ 18 O of benthic foraminiferal tests, although the magnitude of the shift is larger in plant material than in the atmosphere. Increasing mean annual precipitation and p O 2 could have enhanced plant carbon-isotope fractionation during the Late Cretaceous, whereas changing p CO 2 levels seem to have had no effect on plant carbon-isotope fractionation. The results of this study suggest that amber is a powerful fossil plant material for palaeoenvironmental and palaeoclimatic reconstructions. Improvement of the resolution of the existing data coupled with more detailed information about botanical source and environmental growing conditions of the fossil plant material will probably allow a more faithful interpretation of amber δ 13 C records and a wider understanding of the composition of the past atmosphere.

Abstract: International audience; The Upper Cretaceous lignite deposits of La Garnache, Vendée (western France), consist of two lignitic clay series, Garnache 1 and Garnache 2, separated by a fault. The first series cropped out to the south of the fault during road works until 2002 but is now covered by an embankment. It has provided numerous pieces of amber containing arthropod and microorganism inclusions. The second lignitic series, exposed to the north of the fault, is rich in fossil wood but devoid of amber. Palynological analysis of Garnache 1 revealed several Normapolles species belonging to the genera Atlantopollis, Complexiopollis, Osculapollis, Plicapollis and Trudopollis, but larger forms typical of Senonian deposits are absent. By contrast, Garnache 2 proved to be dominated taxonomically and numerically by spores (Appendicisporites, Camarozonosporites, Gleicheniidites, Patellasporites, Stereisporites), associated with a few gymnosperm (Cerebropollenites, Phyllocladidites, Classopollis) and angiosperm (Liliacidites, Retitricolpites and a single specimen of the Normapolles Complexiopollis) taxa. Garnache 1 is, therefore, younger than Garnache 2, the latter being clearly Cenomanian in age whereas Garnache 1 is more likely to be Turonian. Lignitic clay of Garnache 1 contains numerous translucent, orange to red, pieces of amber. Vendean amber is rich in aquatic arthropods, such as tanaids and epicarideans (Crustacea), as well as marine or brackish siliceous microorganisms such as diatoms and sponge spicules. These aquatic inclusions indicate that resin-producing trees grew along and close to the seashore. The amber-bearing clay was deposited in a calm, estuarine or lagoonal, muddy environment.

Abstract: Les recentes etudes ichnologiques menees dans le Bassin des Causses ont mis a jour deux nouveaux gites a empreintes de pas de dinosaures inedits dans la Formation Dolomitique de l'Hettangien. Ces sites sont situes dans la partie nord du Bassin, en Lozere, un secteur ou les empreintes dinosauroides infraliasiques etaient peu documentees. Les dalles a ichnites sont remarquables par le grand nombre et la diversite des traces. Les empreintes ont ete attribuees a Grallator (Hitchcock, 1858), Dilophosauripus (Welles, 1971) et Eubrontes (Hitchcock, 1845) dont les ichnopoietes etaient des theropodes. Bien que de nombreux sites aient ete mis a jour dans le Bassin des Causses ces dernieres decennies, un assemblage ichnologique associant ces trois ichnotaxons n'avait jamais ete decrit dans la Formation Dolomitique. Recent ichnological studies revealed two new localities showing dinosaur footprints in the Hettangian Dolomitic Formation from the Causses Basin, southern France. The traces are reported from the northern part of the basin, in Lozere, an area where Lower Jurassic dinosaur ichnites were poorly documented. The surfaces bearing footprints are characterized by a large number of traces. The ichnites are ascribed to Grallator (Hitchcock, 1858), Dilophosauripus (Welles, 1971) and Eubrontes (Hitchcock, 1845) whose trackmakers were theropods. Although numerous tracksites were previously described in the southern part of the Causses Basin, these three ichnotaxa are for the first time observed in association into the Dolomitic Formation.

Abstract: International audience; Two fossil localities are reported on the "LGV SEA" railroad from the Lower Cenomanianof Jaunay-Clan (JC), near Poitiers, western France. The laminated mudstones yielded plantfossils including ferns (Cladophlebis, Osmundophyllum, Ruffordia goeppertii, Sphenopteris),conifers (Brachyphyllum, Dammarophyllum, Pagiophyllum), and terrestrial and aquaticfreshwater angiosperms (Eucalyptolaurus depreii, Ploufolia). They are associated with acoleopteran insect that shows systematic affinities to the modern subfamily Chrysomeli-nae (Chrysomelidae). This assemblage suggests connections with arborescent vegetationgrowing in calm freshwater environment. Brackish to marine invertebrates also occurand include a dakoticancroid crab (Brachyura, Podotremata, Dakoticancroidea) and a fewbivalves (Brachidontes). They suggest brackish episodes during pond sedimentation in acoastal environment. Lastly, vertebrates are represented by an isolated feather.
