- Abstract
Of extant languages, Ch'orti'Mayan is the closest to ancient the Maya hieroglyphic script, but it is a language that is decreasing in usage. In southern Guatemala where it is spoken, many children no longer learn it, as Spanish dominates most experiences. From linguistic and anthropological data gathered over many years, Kerry Hull has created the largest and most complete Ch'orti'Mayan dictionary to date. With nearly 9,000 entries, this trilingual dictionary of Ch'orti', Spanish, and English preserves ancient words and concepts that were vital to this culture in the past. Each entry contains examples of Ch'orti'sentences along with their translations. Each term is defined grammatically and linked to a grammatical index. Variations due to age and region are noted. Additionally, extensive cultural and linguistic annotations accompany many entries, providing detailed looks into Ch'orti'daily life, mythology, flora and fauna, healing, ritual, and food. Hull worked closely with native speakers, including traditional ritual specialists, and presents that work here in a way that is easily accessible to scholars and laypersons alike.

- Abstract
A full-length study of monocollocable words, i.e. words whose usage is severely restricted to one or a few combinations only (such as English ado in without much/further ado), that brings together corpus-based data from the four languages along with studies analysing, along both general and language-specific lines, monocollocable words in terms of their frequency, lexical as well as morphosyntactic behaviour, and various facets of their peripheral status. Each of the four langauges covered, namely, English, Italian, German and Czech also offers a short introduction of the respective languages written in English, Italian, German and Czech. A rare contribution to our knowledge of an as yet little studied field, the book will attract the attention of, and stimulate a new interest in, all who are ready to acknowledge that collocation is a core phenomenon of language – lexicologists, lexicographers with a focus on phraseology, language typologists, linguists with a contrastive and historical agenda, and language teachers alike.

- Abstract
A Polyglot Pocket Dictionary of Lingala, English, French and Italian represents a glossary that allows the reader to appreciate positive diversity and interculturalism through multilingualism. Building on, and referring to, the author's experiences of studying and living abroad as a series of transits, transitions, and translations, it urges the reader to enhance their global competency and brain power, and to seek cosmocitizenship through the study of world languages and cultures. To this end, it shares enlightening reflections on the benefits of multilingualism, and allows the reader to develop basic language skills in Lingala, English, French, and Italian. As such, in addition to the glossary, this work also contains key facts about the languages at hand, as well as useful phrases, weekdays, numbers, and elements of grammar.

- Abstract
Since 1987 when the first English explanatory dictionary fully based on corpus evidence was published, considerable changes related to the choice of lexicographic evidence have affected the field of lexicography. On this background (even though the volume of the lexicographic material is ample) the English-Latvian lexicographic tradition looks rather traditional and even somewhat stagnant. Thus, there is an urgent need for a detailed analytical inventory of English-Latvian dictionaries in order to facilitate new dictionary projects. This book provides a comprehensive survey of the development of the English-Latvian lexicographic tradition considering the various extra-linguistic factors which have influenced it. It studies the typical features of English-Latvian dictionaries traced throughout the tradition at the levels of their mega-, macro- and microstructure, pinpoints the problematic aspects of English-Latvian lexicography and offers theoretically grounded solutions for improving the quality of future English-Latvian dictionaries.

- Abstract
Captain Heinrich Paasch was the first to recognize the complexity and variety in marine vocabulary and technical terminology and the inherent need for a cohesive classification of nautical terms. Equipped with over thirty-five years of seafaring experience, including as a sailor, captain, and as a Surveyor to Lloyd's Register, Paasch sets out, chapter by chapter, an exhaustive explanation of all the principal parts of a ship's structure and equipment. He describes the main types of steam and sailing vessels; wooden and iron hulls; propulsion machinery; anchors and related equipment; masts and spars; standing and running rigging, as well as sails, tackle, blocks and ropes. He concludes with knots, bends, hitches, and splices and finally provides a listing of standard measurements.Paasch's stated intention to describe a ship literally From Keel to Truck” has been widely applauded as has his inclusion of the equivalent terms in French and German alongside the English. Each section is accompanied by dozens of high-quality line engravings to accompany the text and illustrate the terminology and concept described. First published in 1885, and an invaluable resource ever since, Captain Paasch's dictionary is both a full encyclopedia and an unequaled introduction for anyone interested in steam and sailing ships, life aboard a ship, engineering, or simply understanding the language.

- Abstract
Scientific and technical contacts between nations· have necessitated the publication of various language textbooks, manuals and reference books. Particularly important among them are multilingual scientifio and technical dictionaries. This English-German-French-Dutch-Russian Dictionary of Scientifio and Technical Terms contains some 9000 entries. The main fea ture of the Dictionary is that it includes first and foremost general scientific terms needed by an engineer working in any branch of science and technology. Besides, the Dictionary includes the basic terms used in physics, mathemat ics, the fundamentals of electrical engineering and chemistry, and also the most essential terms pertaining to manufacturing processes. machine design, testing methods, etc. The Compilers were confronted with a difficult task, as nowadays science and technology are developing rapidly and the minimum scientific and tech nical vocabulary required by a specialist is increasing accordingly. The Compilers have taken special pains to include the entire basic mod ern technical vocabulary, omitting superfluous words and phrases. They have tried to solve this problem by selecting mainly those scientific and tech nical terms which constitute the basic of a specialised vocabulary. There fore, the Dictionary includes the vocabulary pertaining to general study courses in mathematics, physics and chemistry, and also in electrical engi neering. electronics and machine design, given in technical colleges irrespect ive of their specification. This lends the Dictionary an «all-purpose» char acter, making it equally useful to scientists and engineers of different countries, who have graduated from colleges with different curricula.

Dictionary of Chemistry and Chemical Technology presents approximately 12,000 terminologies wherein these terms and their corresponding equivalents have been checked in literature in each of the six languages, including English, Spanish, German, French, Polish, and Russian. Each separately numbered English term in this book refers to a distinct concept as determined from the existing literature of the subject. The entries in this book are arranged in alphabetical order of the English terms and are numbered consecutively. This book provides as well an index of English synonyms for chemical compounds, to which the reader should refer in case a wanted term cannot be found in the main text. This book is a valuable resource for chemists. Readers of foreign literature seeking the exact corresponding equivalent of a scientific expression will also find this book extremely useful.

- Abstract
This Dictionary is designed for people who have just started studying mechanical engineering terms in a foreign language, particularly for those who have little or no knowledge of either the terms or their meaning. The latter category of readers may find it useful, in addition to the translation of the term, to have an explanation of its meaning as well. In the Dictionary, such explanation is provided by means of internationally accepted symbols, formulas, charts, diagrams, plans and drawings. In this way, illustrations serve as a universal intermediary between languages. As a rule, the illustration for a term consists of that graphic representation which is most frequently used in explaining the term concerned in instructional and technical literature (conventional graphic representation of the term). Apart from being informative, the illustrations also help remember the terms themselves. In the Dictionary, therefore, illustrations are provided even for those terms whose meaning would be understood without the aid of graphic symbols. At the same time, the author had to leave out many terms - even important ones - which do not lend themselves to illustration. The terms are grouped according to subject. This makes it possible to study the terminology pertaining to the subjects which interest the user most. This should also help speed up the assimilation of the terms, since the student will be able to remember a group of terms pertaining to a common subject. When translating texts from one language into another, one is helped by the alphabetical indexes given at the end of the Dictionary.

- Abstract
The purpose of this Dictionary, published jointly by «Kluwer Technische Boeken, BV» (Deventer, The Netherlands) and «Russky yazyk Publishers» (Moscow, USSR) is to help the user read and translate Englisch, German, French, Dutch and Russian texts in electrical engineer ing. Up until now all such dictionaries were containing terms pertaining directly to electrical engineering plus the terminology used in its off-sheets which have evolved into separate disci plines, such as communications, electronics, automation etc. Foremost, however, this Diction ary represents the terminology of electrical engineering, while the branches are represented by their basic terms only. Given the relative small volume (about 8000 terms), the authors tried to reflect the most important terms in such areas as the cirquit theory, electric and magnetic measurements, ele ctric power generation, transmission and distribution, as well as the industrial and domestic consumption of electric power. The Dictionary also contains many terms relevant to high voltage technology, electrical machines and apparatus, electric drive, as well as to the elements and structures of aerial and cable transmission lines. In selecting English terms, the authors were trying to reflect both their British and Ameri can versions, although they did not attempt to present all terminological synonyms of this kind. In some cases the Dictionary provides the main spelling versions.

- Abstract
In recent decades natural, technological and other disasters have been increasing in frequency and magnitude, and the involvement of international organizations and professionals from different disciplines has been growing in parallel. By definition major emergencies call for outside aid and often international assistance. The many agencies and individual helpers from different countries, different languages and different specialties converge on the stricken site with the sole object of helping the victims, who are themselves of a different background and language. Communication among these people and a certain understanding of the varying terminology of the many professions and activities therefore become paramount if the difficulties of the disaster situation are not to be compounded with difficulties of communication. A common ground for understanding between doctors, engineers, meteorologists, nurses, nutritionists, planners, government officials, transport personnel and the many other workers involved in disaster preparedness, relief and rehabilitation is therefore indispensable. It is to this end that this multilingual, multidisciplinary Dictionary serves as an invaluable tool for the disaster manager, whatever his background and wherever he may be called upon to work. A precursor in Disaster Medicine, Dr. William Gunn has conducted numerous emergency missions for the United Nations and other agencies, and this Dictionary has been tested in the field and in training courses over many years.

- Abstract
Interest in acoustics continues to increase. Although this branch of science was concerned primarily with the promotion of qualitative and quantitative sound transmission until a few decades ago, emphasis is currently placed also on the limitation of sound nuisance and, by extension, the setting of boundaries for permissible sound levels in places \vhere people are found. This last aspect in particular is exercising more and more influence on the design of buildings and machines, and in town and country planning. In addition, sound vibrations, because of their physical characteristics, are being used increasingly in disparate disciplines such as navigation, medical investigation and non destructive materials research. The flood of publications resulting from this increased interest in acoustics has led to a growing number of people being confronted with terminology which had until quite re cently only been used by a relatively small group of specialists and had remained largely unknown as a result. This four language dictionary, based on'W. Reichardt, Technische Akustik; Berlin 1979', has been compiled to make not only this literature but also the nomenclature of equipment and instructions for their use accessible to the specialist and the interested layman.

The Dictionary contains the names of nearly 2500 plant species, in some cases including subspecies and varieties. Tropical crops from all parts of the world receive the same attention as those from the temperate zone. Common names are given not only in English, French, German, Portuguese and Spanish but also in many other languages, where such names are used in the technical literature. `Agronomic plants'comprise not only the agricultural and horticultural crops but also pasture plants, green manure, soil covers, trees used in agroforestry, and major weeds. Also included are plants which are presently being discussed as new crops, with considerable economic value. The Dictionary will meet the needs not only of scientists in agriculture, botany and geography but also those of agricultural extensionists, merchants in agricultural products and professional translators.

- Abstract
This quadrilingual economics dictionary is the result of many years of work. Professor Frits J. de J ong gathered material for this book since the very beginning of his professional career in the final years of the forties. Unfortunately, the author himself was not able to see the final result of his labours in book form. A mere few weeks after the completion of the manuscript, in November 1976, Professor De Jong passed away. As Hartog and Hennipman wrote in their memorials, Frits de Jong always devoted much attention to the development of concepts and terminology. Throughout his career, he exhibited great determination and perseverance in trying to achieve a clear and consistent terminology, and its subsequent use, in the science of economics.!'2 That his efforts were mainly aimed at his native language was due to the fact that a language such as Dutch, which is only practiced in a small geographic area, faces the danger of a large-scale introduction of foreign words, specifically English/American, German and French words in this case. He always strongly resisted such a debasement of the Dutch language and sought instead to construct appropriate Dutch words for the existing English, German and French ones. An early example can be found in an article published in De Economist of 1950, entitled'De economische terminologie in het Nederlands'(The Terminology of Economics in Dutch).

- Abstract
The first edition of this dictionary was published in 1964, and the revised second edition appeared in 1968. Since then electrical engineering has made great progress and has enlarged rapidly along with its associated fields. Accordingly, the terms required for electrical engineering have greatly increased. Therefore the publishers, Ohmsha, Ltd. decided to publish this extensively revised and enlarged third edition. The original editor, Dr. Yuichi Ishibashi, who is my father, devoted great energy to compiling revisions after the appearance of the second edition, but he passed away in 1969 leaving his work in the form of a mass of manuscript cards. Since my speciality is the same as my father's, Mr. Sato, the managing director of Ohmsha, Ltd. approached me with his request to compile this third edition, to which I agreed to bring my father's efforts to fruition. Following the trend of the first and second editions, in addition to the customary technical terms of electrical engineering, electronics, and communications, this third edition attempts to include relevant terms from the basic sciences of mathematics, physics, and chemistry, as well as from automation, data processing, instrumentation, nucleonics, mechanical engineer ing, civil engineering, architecture and economics. Also I have tried to include as many verbs, adjectives, and adverbs that appear frequently in general engineering literature as possible. The result is that this third edition contains over 42,000 vocabulary entries.

- Abstract
For centuries now, visual communication design has celebrated national identities (through the now-iconic identity systems developed for the Olympic Games, for example) at the same time as it transcends international borders, such as through the far-reaching influence of the Bauhaus and the International Typographic Style. Today, of course, such transcendence is easier than ever. In an era of nearly instantaneous global access, enabled by increasingly ubiquitous wireless connections, the world seems very small.Presented in five languages—English, French, German, Italian, and Spanish—Graphic Design, Translated is a reflection of the increasingly international nature of visual communication design. Illustrated with examples from around the globe, the book is a compilation of more than 200 of the profession's most common terms, culled from a broad range of categories: design history, printing and paper, typography, digital technology, and general design practice. All of which makes this volume an essential reference for students, practitioners, clients–indeed, anybody interested in the global scope of today's visual communication design.

- Abstract
The Comanche Vocabulary collected in Mexico during the years 1861-1864 by Manuel García Rejón is by far the most extensive Comanche word list compiled before the establishment of the Kiowa-Comanche-Apache Reservation in 1867. It preserves words and concepts that have since changed or even disappeared from the language, thus offering a unique historical window on earlier Comanche culture. This translation adds the English equivalents to the original Spanish-Comanche list of 857 words, as well as a Comanche-English vocabulary and comparisons with later Comanche word lists. Daniel J. Gelo's introduction discusses the circumstances in which García Rejón gathered his material and annotates significant aspects of the vocabulary in light of current knowledge of Comanche language and culture. The book also includes information on pictography, preserving a rare sample of Comanche scapula drawing. This information will help scholars understand the processes of language evolution and cultural change that occurred among all Native American peoples following European contact. The Comanche Vocabulary will also hold great interest for the large public fascinated by this once-dominant tribe.

- Abstract
Geography is a system of highly developed sciences about the environment. Geographical science embracing the study of the Earth's physical phenomena, people and their economic activities has always been in need of an extensive terminology. Geographical terms are related to the terms of natural sciences (physics, chemistry, biology, geology, etc.) and humanities (history, economics, sociology, etc.) since geography is based on these fundamental subjects. Geography includes a number of disciplines and subdivisions which appeared along with the development of the science In spite of being very different geographical disciplines have some common tools of investigation which is maps, comparative method of exploration, remote sensing, geoinformation systems. Today very well developed terminologies of all the specialist fields of geography and related subjects exist in the main world languages. However, they are not always well-correlated. Nowadays geographical terminology requires unification and international correlation more than ever before. Hence the idea of compiling a multilingual polydisciplinary dictionary. The Dictionary consists of the basic table of terms arranged according to the order of the English alphabet with each term numbered. Each entry consists of the term in English and its equivalents in Russian, French, German, Spanish. Short definitions of terms are given in English and in Russian. The terms are supplied with the necessary grammar labels, such as gender of nouns, plural number, etc. The Dictionary combines two functions: that of a defining dictionary and that of a bilingual dictionary. These two functions are basically contradictory because usually the defining dictionary is aimed at giving one meaning of the word which is the main and essential one, while the bilingual dictionary tries to give different equivalents of a given word in the other language in order to supply the user with maximum possible translations, differing in the shades of meanings, thus giving him the possibility to choose the appropriate word. But in our Dictionary we intentionally decided to combine the two functions – defining and multilingual, because a short definition of the term and equivalents in other languages help to achieve our main aim which consists in showing the basic geographical terminology and harmonizing it in several languages. Having this into consideration we deliberately mixed two types of dictionaries in one. - Organized alphabetically via English - Provides short definition of geographical terms in English and Russian - Includes multilingual translation of terms from English to Russian, French, German, Spanish

- Abstract
This dictionary includes some 9200 terms, each with a definition and often and additional descriptive text in English, the terms being translated in French, German and Spanish. It is more complete than similar previously published dictionaries or glossaries, and contains all fields of soil science as well as some adjacent fields of other earth sciences, agriculture and engineering. Present concepts and definitions are detailed along with earlier concepts, not only for historical reasons but also for developing new ideas. Concepts, terms and definitions usual in literature of various countries are discussed and compared, to offer an appropriate exchange of ideas. Soil classifications and methodologies for soil investigation coming from a score of European, American and other countries and international organisations are presented, and correlations between names of soil taxa in different classifications are suggested. Readers active in all branches of soil science will find accessible answers to many of their questions, either directly referring to procedures used in the organisations where they work, or related to way of thinking in other countries. Readers active in other branches, but needing information on soils, will also find answers to this dictionary of great assistance to their research.• Over 9200 terms with definitions in English and translations in French, German, Spanish• Includes all fields of soil science and many connected sciences• All present-day terminology with inclusion of earlier, classical concepts and terms • Terminology in current USDA Soil Taxonomy, FAO World Reference Base or Soil Resources, and other documents from different countriesGranted the'N.Cernescu'award from the Romanian Academy on Agricultural and Forestry Sciences

- Abstract
This dictionary will present all currently accepted generic, specific, sub-specific and variety names of trees, excluding fossil and more recently extinct taxa, hybrids and cultivars. Only the indigenous trees of a continent, those wild species that were natural elements of the spontaneous forest vegetation before the arrival of Europeans or other colonizers, are included. Each generic entry includes the family to which it is assigned, the synonyms of the Latin name, and the English, French, Spanish, trade and other names. For the English and French names the standard name is listed first, followed by other available names with, in parentheses, the countries where they are used. Where appropriate, names in additional languages are also included. Each infrageneric (species, subspecies, variety) entry includes, in addition, the distribution, height, type of foliage, ecological characteristics and main uses of the tree when available. In this volume only taxa indigenous on the North American continent are included, considered in a geographical, not in a political sense. This means from Alaska and Greenland to Panama, including Caribbean, but excluding Hawaii.

- Abstract
This dictionary contains 13,000 terms with more than 4,000 cross-references used in the following fields: automation, technology of management and regulation, computing machine and data processing, computer control, automation of industry, laser technology, theory of information and theory of signals, theory of algorithms and programming, philosophical bases of cybernetics, cybernetics and mathematical methods.Automation pertains to the theory, art, or technique of making a machine, a process or a device more fully automatic. Computers and information processing equipment play a large role in the automation of a process because of the inherent ability of a computer to develop decision that will, in effect, control or govern the process from the information received by the computer concerning the status of the process. Thus automation pertains to both the theory, and techniques of using automatic systems in industrial applications and the processes of investigation, design and conversion to automatic methods. Automatic control, automatic materials handling, automatic testing, automatic packaging, for continuous as well as batch processing, are all considered parts of the overall or completely automatic process. The Dictionary consists of two parts, Basic Table and Indexes. In the first part the English terms are listed alphabetically, numbered consecutively and followed by its German, French and Russian equivalents. English synonyms appear as cross-references to the main entries in their proper alphabetical order. The second part of the Dictionary, the Indexes, contains separate alphabetical indexes of the German, French and Russian terms. The reference number(s) with each term stands for the number of the English term(s) in the basic table.Elsevier's Dictionary of Automatic Technics will be a valuable tool for specialists, scientists, students and everyone who takes interest in the problems of investigation devoted to the design, development, and applications of methods and techniques for rendering a process of group of machines self-actuating, self-moving, or self-controlling.

- Abstract
Dictionaries are didactic books used as consultation instruments for self-teaching. They are composed by an ordered set of linguistic units which reflects a double structure, the macrostructure which correspond to the word list and the microstructure that refers to the contents of each lemma. The great value of dictionaries nests in the fact that they establish a standard nomenclature and prevent in that way the appearance of new useless synonyms. This dictionary contains a total of about 27.500 main English entries, and over of 130.000 translations that should normally sufficiently cover all fields of life sciences. The basic criteria used to accept a word a part of the dictionary during the development period in order of importance were usage, up-to-dateness, specificity, simplicity and conceptual relationships. The dictionary meets the standards of higher education and covers all main fields of life sciences by setting its primary focus on the vastly developing fields of cell biology, biochemistry, molecular biology, immunology, developmental biology, microbiology, genetics and also the fields of human anatomy, histology, pathology, physiology, zoology and botany. The fields of ecology, paleontology, systematics, evolution, biostatistics, plant physiology, plant anatomy, plant histology, biometry and lab techniques have been sufficiently covered but in a more general manner. The latest Latin international anatomical terminology'Terminologia Anatomica'or'TA'has been fully incorporated and all anatomical entries have been given their international Latin TA synonym. This dictionary will be a valuable and helpful tool for all scientists, teachers, students and generally all those that work within the fields of life sciences.

- Abstract
La musique est une langue internationale qui traverse les frontières pour communiquer directement avec les sensibilités artistiques de chacun. Pour écouter un raga indien, une partita de Bach, ou une jig irlandaise, nos oreilles suffisent. Mais pour parler de la musique, nous avons besoin de nos langues maternelles, et parfois le chemin est semé d'embûches: le crochet de l'anglais est une noire et non une croche. Ce lexique présente les termes de la musique et de la musicologie en 4 langues.

The CL Research Senseval system was the highest performing system among the 'All-words' systems, with an overall fine-grained score of 61.6 percent for precision and 60.5 percent for recall on 98 percent of the 8,448 texts on the revised submission (up by almost 6 and 9 percent from the first). The results were achieved with an almost complete reliance on syntactic behavior, using (1) a robust and fast ATN-style parser producing parse trees with annotations on nodes, (2) DIMAP dictionary creation and maintenance software (after conversion of the Hector dictionary files) to hold dictionary entries, and (3) a strategy for analyzing the parse trees in concert with the dictionary data. Further considerable improvements are possible in the parser, exploitation of the Hector data (and representation of dictionary entries), and the analysis strategy, still with syntactic and collocational data. The Senseval data (the dictionary entries and the corpora) provide an excellent testbed for understanding the sources of failures and for evaluating changes in the CL Research system. Key words: word-sense disambiguation, Senseval, dictionary software, analysis of parsing output
