We propose to perform a continuously scanning all-sky survey from 200 keV to 80 MeV achieving a sensitivity which is better by a factor of 40 or more compared to the previous missions in this energy range. The Gamma-Ray Imaging, Polarimetry and Spectroscopy (GRIPS) mission addresses fundamental questions in ESA's Cosmic Vision plan. Among the major themes of the strategic plan, GRIPS has its focus on the evolving, violent Universe, exploring a unique energy window. We propose to investigate $\gamma$-ray bursts and blazars, the mechanisms behind supernova explosions, nucleosynthesis and spallation, the enigmatic origin of positrons in our Galaxy, and the nature of radiation processes and particle acceleration in extreme cosmic sources including pulsars and magnetars. The natural energy scale for these non-thermal processes is of the order of MeV. Although they can be partially and indirectly studied using other methods, only the proposed GRIPS measurements will provide direct access to their primary photons. GRIPS will be a driver for the study of transient sources in the era of neutrino and gravitational wave observatories such as IceCUBE and LISA, establishing a new type of diagnostics in relativistic and nuclear astrophysics. Nuclear physics offers us a powerful tool: using nuclear resonance absorption lines to infer the physical conditions in astrophysical settings which are otherwise difficult to deduce. Present-day technology provides an increase in sensitivity over previous gamma-ray missions large enough to utilize this tool for the first time. The most exciting promise is to measure gamma-ray bursts from the first star(s) at redshifts 20-60, but also active galactic nuclei are promising targets., Comment: White Paper subm. to Decadal Survey

Results obtained from an X-ray spectral survey of nearby Seyfert galaxies using XMM--Newton are reported. The sample was optically selected, well defined, complete in B mag, and distance limited: it consists of the nearest (D<22 Mpc) 27 Seyfert galaxies (9 of type 1, 18 of type 2) taken from the Ho et al. (1997) sample. This is one of the largest atlases of hard X-ray spectra of low-L active galaxies ever assembled. All nuclear sources except two Sey 2s are detected between 2-10 keV, half for the first time ever, and average spectra are obtained for all of them. Nuclear luminosities reach values down to 10**38 erg/s. The shape of the distribution of X-ray parameters is affected by the presence of Compton-thick objects (> 30% among type 2s). The latter have been identified either directly from their intense FeK line and flat X-ray spectra, or indirectly with flux diagnostic diagrams which use isotropic indicators. After taking into account these highly absorbed sources, we find that (i) the intrinsic X-ray spectral properties (i.e., spectral shapes and luminosities above 2 keV) are consistent between type 1 and type 2 Sey, as expected from ``unified models'', (ii) Sey galaxies as a whole are distributed fairly continuously over the entire range of Nh, between 10**20 and 10**25 cm**-2, and (iii) while Sey 1s tend to have lower Nh and Sey 2s tend to have the highest, we find 30% and 10% exceptions, respectively. Overall the sample well represents the average intrinsic X-ray spectral properties of nearby AGN, including a proper estimate of the distribution of their absorbing columns. Finally, we conclude that, with the exception of a few cases, the present study agrees with predictions of unified models of Sey galaxies, and extends their validity down to very low luminosities., Comment: 23 pages, 4 tables, 4 figures, 2 Appendices with 27 source spectra and notes, to be published in the Astronomy & Astrophysics Journal

We expand on the recently reported detections of the gamma-ray resonant absorption along the line of sight toward gamma-ray bright quasars (QSOs), like 3C279. We propose to use this novel gamma-ray absorption method to study the Dark Matter distribution in the Milky Way, as well as in the Local Group. Properties of the absorber that was detected on the sight lines towards gamma-ray bright QSOs at zero redshift are discussed. We compare our results with the expected Dark Matter distributions in the halo of Milky Way, that were simulated in boundaries of different CDM models. We present a spectroscopic study of 41 hard X-ray sources detected serendipitously with high significance (> 5 sigma in the 2-10 keV band) in seven EPIC performance/verification phase observations. The large collecting area of EPIC allows us to explore the spectral properties of these faint hard X-ray sources with 2< F_{2-10} < 80 x 10^{-14} erg cm^{-2}s^{-1} even though the length of the exposures are modest (~ 20 ks). Optical identifications are available for 21 sources of our sample. Using a simple power law plus Galactic absorption model we find an average value of the photon index Gamma ~ 1.6-1.7, broadly consistent with recent measurements made at similar fluxes with ASCA and with Chandra stacked spectral analyses. We find that 31 out of 41 sources are well fitted by this simple model and only eight sources require absorption in excess of the Galactic value. Interestingly enough, one third of these absorbed sources are broad line objects, though with moderate column densities. Two sources in the sample are X-ray bright optically quiet galaxies and show flat X-ray spectra. Comparing our observational results with those expected from standard synthesis models of the cosmic X-ray background (CXB) we find a fraction of unabsorbed to absorbed sources larger than predicted by theoretical models at our completeness limit of F_{2-10} ~ 5 x 10^{-14} erg cm^{-2}s^{-1}. The results presented here illustrate well how wide-angle surveys performed with EPIC on board XMM-Newton allow population studies of interesting and unusual sources to be made as well as enabling constraints to be placed on some input parameters for synthesis models of the CXB., Comment: 16 pages, 11 figures. New BeppoSAX observations of the nearby prototypical starburst galaxies NGC 253 and M82 are presented. A companion paper (Cappi et al. 1998;astro-ph/9809325) shows that the hard (2-10 keV) spectrum of both galaxies, extracted from the source central regions, is best described by a thermal emission model with kT ~ 6-9 keV and abundances ~ 0.1-0.3 solar. The spatial analysis yields clear evidence that this emission is extended in NGC 253, and possibly also in M82. This quite clearly rules out a LLAGN as the main responsible for their hard X-ray emission. Significant contribution from point-sources (i.e. X-ray binaries (XRBs) and Supernovae Remnants (SNRs)) cannot be excluded; neither can we at present reliably estimate the level of Compton emission. However, we argue that such contributions shouldn't affect our main conclusion, i.e., that the BeppoSAX results show, altogether, compelling evidence for the existence of a very hot, metal-poor interstellar plasma in both galaxies., Comment: 5 Latex pages, 4 figures, uses psfig.sty. The Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 2110 has been observed with BeppoSAX between 0.5 and 150 keV. The high energy instrument onboard, PDS, has succeeded in measuring for the first time the spectrum of this source in the 13-150 keV range. The PDS spectrum, having a photon index Gamma~1.86 is fully compatible with that expected from a Seyfert 1 nucleus. In the framework of unified models, the harder (Gamma~1.67) 2-10 keV spectrum is well explained assuming the presence of a complex partial + total absorber (Nh~30x10^22 cm^-2 x25% + Nh~4x10^22 cm^-2 x100%). The high column density of this complex absorber is consistent both with the FeK_alpha line strength and with the detection of an absorption edge at E~7.1 keV in the power-law spectrum., Comment: A&A Letters accepted, 5 pages

We report on observations of the X-ray pulsar IGR J16320-4751 (also known as AX J1631.9-4752) performed simultaneously with International Gamma-Ray Astrophysics Laboratory (INTEGRAL) and XMM-Newton. We refine the source position and identify the most likely infrared counterpart. Our simultaneous coverage allows us to confirm the presence of X-ray pulsations at approximately 1300 s, that we detect above 20 keV with INTEGRAL for the first time. The pulse fraction is consistent with being constant with energy, which is compatible with a model of polar accretion by a pulsar. We study the spectral properties of IGR J16320-4751 during two major periods occurring during the simultaneous coverage with both satellites, namely a flare and a non-flare period. We detect the presence of a narrow 6.4 keV iron line in both periods. The presence of such a feature is typical of supergiant wind accretors such as Vela X-1 or GX 301-2. We inspect the spectral variations with respect to the pulse phase during the non-flare period, and show that the pulse is solely due to variations of the X-ray flux emitted by the source and not due to variations of the spectral parameters. Our results are therefore compatible with the source being a pulsar in a High Mass X-ray Binary. We detect a soft excess appearing in the spectra as a blackbody with a temperature of approximately 0.07 keV. We discuss the origin of the X-ray emission in IGR J16320-4751: while the hard X-rays are likely the result of Compton emission produced in the close vicinity of the pulsar, based on energy argument we suggest that the soft excess is likely the emission by a collisionally energized cloud in which the compact object is embedded.

One gamma-ray detection plane of the ZEBRA telescope, consisting of nine position sensitive scintillation crystal bars designed to operate over the spectral range 0.2 to 10 MeV, has been constructed in the laboratory. A series of experimental images has been generated using a scaled down flight pattern mask in conjunction with a diverging gamma-ray beam. Point and extended sources have been imaged in order to assess quantitatively the performance of the system.
