Abstract

The results of an empirical study comparing the thought process as of high- and low-rated systems analysts is preset. The report discusses the types of problem solving behaviors exhibited by the two groups of systems analysts and draws conclusions about the relationship of those behaviors to successful performance. The results suggest that qualitative differences exist in the problem solving methods of the two groups, and that the skills associated with high-rated problem solving may lead to better job performance and may be transferred to other practitioners. Our goal as management specialists is to understand the organizational system and to attempt to optimize its efficiency.
