As climatic conditions change, species will be forced to move or adapt to avoid extinction. Exacerbated by ongoing climate change, California recently experienced a severe and exceptional drought from 2011 to 2017. To investigate whether an adaptive response occurred during this event, we conducted a "resurrection" study of the cutleaf monkeyflower (Mimulus laciniatus), an annual plant, by comparing trait means and variances of ancestral seed collections ("pre-drought") with contemporary descendant collections ("drought"). Plants were grown under common conditions to test whether this geographically restricted species has the capacity to respond evolutionarily to climate stress across its range. We examined if traits shifted in response to the recent, severe drought and included populations across an elevation gradient, including populations at the low- and high-elevation edges of the species range. We found that time to seedling emergence in the drought generation was significantly earlier than in the pre-drought generation, a response consistent with drought adaptation. Additionally, trait variation in days to emergence was reduced in the drought generation, which suggests selection or bottleneck events. Days to first flower increased significantly by elevation, consistent with climate adaptation across the species range. Drought generation plants were larger and had greater reproduction, which was likely a carryover effect of earlier germination. These results demonstrate that rapid shifts in trait means and variances consistent with climate adaptation are occurring within populations, including peripheral populations at warm and cold climate limits, of a plant species with a relatively restricted range that has so far not shifted its elevation distribution during contemporary climate change. Thus, rapid evolution may mitigate, at least temporarily, range shifts under global climate change. This study highlights the need for better understanding rapid adaptation as a means for plant communities to cope with extraordinary climate events.

Premise of the studyUnderstanding the evolutionary and ecological factors that determine plant distributions is of primary importance in botanical research. These factors may vary in predictable ways across different spatial scales, and thus, we can leverage scale to reveal the underlying processes limiting plant distributions.MethodsWe review various research considerations across local and geographic scales, including the investigation of dispersal and habitat limitation, evolutionary factors, abiotic and biotic factors, and research logistics. We also present two case studies, slender monkeyflower (Mimulus leptaleus) and cut-leaf monkeyflower (Mimulus laciniatus), in the California Sierra Nevada.Key resultsAt a local spatial scale (within 50 m), no seeds were produced from plants sown at sites located just beyond known patches of M. leptaleus, but within the species' geographic range. At a much broader spatial scale (kilometers), at the highest and lowest elevations of the species' range, we found greatly reduced abundance and fecundity in plants sown outside of the geographic range limits of M. laciniatus.ConclusionsThese cases illustrate two contrasting spatial scales, yet agree in their illustration of strong habitat limitation. We end by discussing future avenues of research and by suggesting ways botanical researchers can frame their studies to maximize information gained on species requirements, distribution limits, and conservation among varying spatial scales.

Oncology nurses need an understanding of genomic science to provide optimal care, yet they may have limited background in how this science guides treatment. The Oncology Nursing Society (ONS) responded to this identified need by developing the ONS Genomics and Precision Oncology Learning Library. Oncology nurses, nursing faculty, staff educators, and administrators can use these resources to support genomics-informed care. Applying artificial intelligence (AI) to cancer care has the potential to transform and enhance nursing practice and patient outcomes, from cancer prevention and screening through treatment, survivorship, and end-of-life care. As the largest healthcare workforce, nurses record a significant amount of patient data used to train healthcare AI tools and are a large percentage of AI end users. Educational opportunities are available to assist nurses in understanding the benefits, limitations, and ethical considerations of this technology and how AI results are directly affected by the quality of nursing documentation. Despite ubiquitous applications of genomics across the cancer care continuum, a recent ONS survey showed literacy and knowledge deficits persist amongst oncology nurses. An ONS genomic competency strategic plan was developed to address these deficits and provide terminology updates. The ONS Genomics Advisory Board established three primary workgroups focusing on: Awareness, Knowledge, and Application. These workgroups have produced over 45 oncology nursing-specific genomic resources and engaging educational materials in a variety of formats. The purpose of this project was to provide an overview of the ONS genomic educational resources available through the ONS Genomics and Precision Oncology Learning Library, as well as present analytics pertaining to access of various resources. The foundational resource that was developed was the ONS Genomics Taxonomy which compiled established peer reviewed definitions in one document and now consists of more than 100 genomic terms. This serves as the accepted nomenclature for all resource development as well as the standard for recommended terminology in all ONS resources, education offerings, and publications. Additional resources include articles in the ONS Voice; podcasts; micro-learnings (Glad You Asked videos); single concept learning anchors on biomarker testing and biomarker quick guides; online interactive case studies; and a catalogue of genetic disorder reference sheets. More resources are in development. As evidence for the impact of the Genomics and Precision Oncology Learning Library, unique library pageviews doubled from quarter 1-quarter 2 in 2021 (543 to 1,220). This learning library has the most pageviews of all ONS learning libraries. Among the many resources accessible from the learning library, the top three assets are the Genomics Taxonomy, a Glad You Asked video and a VOICE article on somatic and germline variants. Of the top 25 video webpages on ONS, 36% (N=9) are genomics-related videos and the Is a Variant the Same as a Mutation video has the most pageviews (3796). These analytics demonstrate that ONS members are accessing the genomics educational resources. The Genomics Advisory Board is continuing to develop educational materials and promote engagement with the Genomics and Precision Oncology Learning Library. Oncology nurses can use these genomic resources for self-education or for teaching others through unit-based continuing education, just-in-time learning, chapter education sessions, and/or conference planning. Modern science has deciphered the entire human genome and is even learning how to safely edit or alter the genome (e.g., CRISPR gene editing). Genomic applications to health focus on genomic variation and how genomic variants are associated with health and illness. The National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI) strategic vision boldly predicts that the clinical relevance of human genomic variants will be "readily predictable" and has launched a consortium (Impact of Genomic Variation on Function--IGVF) to study how human genomic variation impacts genome function, and how such variation influences health and disease. Despite these advances, the "language" of genomic variation has not been fully and uniformly adopted in cancer care. Using outdated terms such as mutation rather than pathogenic variant can lead to errors because the term mutation can mean benign, uncertain significance, and pathogenic genetic changes which have very different impacts on genomic function and disease risk. As a result, there have been misinterpretations by nurses resulting in unsafe care. The Genomics Advisory Board (GAB) of the Oncology Nursing Society is committed to uniform adoption of the three Cs of genomic terminology for oncology practice: current, correct and consistent. The GAB has developed a Call to Action that will be presented to the ONS Board for formal approval. The intended use of the Call to Action is to promulgate the statement for educative purposes as the oncology nursing profession transitions and fully integrates genomic terminology. The Call to Action addresses frequently used terms and provides correct terminology in an effort to reduce error and promote quality care for all. This document is part of a strategic approach to improve genomic literacy in all oncology nurses. As the genomic evidence base continues to expand influencing not just cancer care but all healthcare, it is not surprising that the terminology has also evolved. For example, because of evidence of confusion, in 2015 the American College of Medical Genetics and Genomics recommended the transition from mutation to variant with the associated five tier classification. Despite the challenge of learning and changing familiar terms, implementation of current terminology is essential to avoid misinterpretation which could result in error decreasing the quality of nursing care provided.
