Abstract

On February 28, 2021, a fireball dropped $\sim0.6$ kg of recovered CM2 carbonaceous chondrite meteorites in South-West England near the town of Winchcombe. We reconstruct the fireball's atmospheric trajectory, light curve, fragmentation behaviour, and pre-atmospheric orbit from optical records contributed by five networks. The progenitor meteoroid was three orders of magnitude less massive ($\sim13$ kg) than any previously observed carbonaceous fall. The Winchcombe meteorite survived entry because it was exposed to a very low peak atmospheric dynamic pressure ($\sim0.6$ MPa) due to a fortuitous combination of entry parameters, notably low velocity (13.9 km/s). A near-catastrophic fragmentation at $\sim0.07$ MPa points to the body's fragility. Low entry speeds which cause low peak dynamic pressures are likely necessary conditions for a small carbonaceous meteoroid to survive atmospheric entry, strongly constraining the radiant direction to the general antapex direction. Orbital integrations show that the meteoroid was injected into the near-Earth region $\sim0.08$ Myr ago and it never had a perihelion distance smaller than $\sim0.7$ AU, while other CM2 meteorites with known orbits approached the Sun closer ($\sim0.5$ AU) and were heated to at least 100 K higher temperatures., Comment: Accepted for publication in MAPS

2. Understanding Participation in CALL Vocabulary Tasks through Complexity Theory

Abstract

This study explored participation by Japanese university English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners in Computer Assisted Language Learning/Mobile Assisted Language Learning (CALL/MALL) vocabulary tasks through the lens of Complexity Theory (CT). CT, which studies how complex systems are influenced by changes in interconnected variables (Larsen-Freeman & Cameron, 2008), has been advocated as an approach that aligns well with Second Language Acquisition (SLA) and CALL research (Godwin-Jones, 2019). In this study, CT was applied to action research involving learners using smartphones to create game-based vocabulary quizzes. It aimed to understand how the context, personal attributes, and in-class interactions affected participation and learning outcomes. The results show the variability and nonlinearity of learners' language development, the importance of initial conditions, and the vital role of teacher input. It also demonstrated that there are various ways to successfully complete a task, so viewing tasks as dynamic systems may be a fruitful approach. 7. Addressing Current and Future Challenges in EAL Writing with Universal Design for Learning

Abstract

Writing is an essential literacy skill that is crucial to meeting various social demands. It is also extremely difficult to master, especially for learners of an additional language who face significant barriers to learning. Universal Design for Learning (UDL), is an instructional framework promoted as an effective means of removing such barriers. The basis of UDL is that learning barriers are best addressed through curricula and lessons that provide multiple means of "engagement," "representation," and "action and expression." This study explores the application of UDL in an English as an Additional Language (EAL) writing course at a Japanese university. The UDL guidelines were used in the design and implementation of goals, instruction, learning tasks, and assessments. Learners' perceptions of the UDL-based instruction were investigated using a questionnaire survey. [For the complete volume of short papers, see ED590612.]

9. The 'P2P' Educational Model Providing Innovative Learning by Linking Technology, Business and Research

Abstract

This paper evaluates the effect and potential of a new educational learning model called Peer to Peer (P2P). The study was focused on Laurea, Hyvinkaa's Finland campus and its response to bridging the gap between traditional educational methods and working reality, where modern technology plays an important role. The study describes and evaluates an undergraduate business management programme. A qualitative methodological approach was used in assessing the students' experience of projects with businesses and their theoretical learning without formal lectures. Student feedback via in-depth interviews forms the basis which provides empirical findings from students from different countries. Specific projects involving real businesses within this unique P2P programme are described and assessed within the overall objective. The study concludes that although it requires a different role from both teachers and students the relevance for European education is that both academically and practically this type of model delivers a more employable graduate with more transferable business skills.

15. Through a glass darkly : finding values in obsidian stemmed tools from New Britain, Papua New Guinea

Abstract

The ways of life of the inhabitants of prehistoric New Britain were almost unknown to archaeologists until the last quarter of the twentieth century. Until recently, the people who lived there during the early to mid-Holocene period, and who left scant traces in the archaeological record, were assumed to have been residentially mobile foragers living in simple societies. More recent research has shown that people were making and exchanging large, highly worked, obsidian tools. The inference was that these tools carried a component of social value and were used to signal status, and that the societies of mid-Holocene New Britain were more complex than previously thought. My aim is to demonstrate that a detailed study of a distinctive class of obsidian stemmed tools supports the proposition that networks, in which concepts of social value existed and symbolic capital was exchanged, flourished in West New Britain in the period 5900-3600 BP. This is achieved primarily by using a high-magnification use-wear analysis which, together with supplementary typological and raw material provenancing evidence, enables use-lives of individual artefacts to be constructed. An exploration of both the nature of value and of archaeological evidence for the ways in which people behave in response to the social value of such as status, prestige and identity provides a basis for linking the object biographies of these objects with ways in which people acted in response to symbolic and social value. The results demonstrate that one group of stemmed tools were standardised products made by specialist craft workers acting within some form of social network and exchange system. The people who owned them treated them as ‘special’ objects, recognizing that some of the value attached to these tools was distinct from and separate to any value they may have had as practical utensils. Use-wear is customarily seen as a functional analysis approach which provides data about matters such as diet and subsistence. Employing use-wear to address more abstract concepts such as status, prestige and identity is innovative and marks a step forward in the way in which a high-magnification microwear study can contribute to archaeology.

18. Approximate Private Quantum Channels

Abstract

This thesis includes a survey of the results known for private and approximate private quantum channels. We develop the best known upper bound for $\epsilon$-randomizing maps, $n+2\log(1/\epsilon)+c$ bits required to $\epsilon$-randomize an arbitrary $n$-qubit state by improving a scheme of Ambainis and Smith \cite{AS04} based on small bias spaces \cite{NN90, AGHP92}. We show by a probabilistic argument that in fact the great majority of random schemes using slightly more than this many bits of key are also $\epsilon$-randomizing. We provide the first known non-trivial lower bound for $\epsilon$-randomizing maps, and develop several conditions on them which we hope may be useful in proving stronger lower bounds in the future., Comment: 78 pages, 1 figure. Abstract

Randomization of quantum states is the quantum analogue of the classical one-time pad. We present an improved, efficient construction of an approximately randomizing map that uses O(d/epsilon^2) Pauli operators to map any d-dimensional state to a state that is within trace distance epsilon of the completely mixed state. Our bound is a log d factor smaller than that of Hayden, Leung, Shor, and Winter (2004), and Ambainis and Smith (2004). Then, we show that a random sequence of essentially the same number of unitary operators, chosen from an appropriate set, with high probability form an approximately randomizing map for d-dimensional states. 21. The study of Rydberg gas chemistry by fast flow glow discharge mass spectrometry

Abstract

This study concerns the analysis of processes occurring within, and fundamental characteristics of the flowing afterglow of a fast flowing direct current glow discharge plasma by both mass spectrometric and electrical diagnostic techniques. The evidence presented within this thesis indicates that the glow discharge plasma studied contains a high density of very highly excited state, Rydberg species. Classically, glow discharge plasma is considered to be a partially ionised gas, the chemistry of which is dominated by processes involving charged particles (ions and electrons). However, under the conditions of the fast flow glow discharge source it is thought that the formation and stabilisation of Rydberg atoms is highly favourable, and thus the plasma chemistry can be described by a Rydberg gas model. Theoretical thermodynamic and kinetic data based on calculations (unpublished at the time of submission) performed by Dr R. S. Mason which corroborate this model are also presented. Studies of the influence of the magnitude and polarity of applied the ion exit bias on the electrical properties of the flowing afterglow plasma and active discharge region were undertaken, often in situ with mass spectrometric measurements. Comparison of the electrical and mass spectrometric measurements has provided valuable information about the properties of the Rydberg gas plasma and the ionisation processes within the afterglow plasma. The results of the electrical studies (current and double probe measurements) could not be explained for an ion electron medium. The reactions of secondary gases (H[2], CO, CO[2], N[2], CF[4] and CH[4]) and organic vapours to the flowing afterglow plasma have been studied for a range of conditions. The results of which cannot all be explained by ion-molecule processes, and seemingly conform to the Rydberg gas model.

22. Robust low-order control techniques with powertrain applications

Abstract

Powertrain applications require high performance controllers yet are in general restricted to low order solutions due to limitations in the software and hardware. There are many well developed robust feedback techniques which can be applied very successfully to automotive systems, however these are generally high order solutions and are therefore not suited to most commercial powertrain control modules (PCM). Typically, powertrain control strategies are implemented through low order look-up tables. There are only a limited number of robust design methods which can be used for fixed, low order controller design and many of these techniques are limited to single-input-single-output (SISO) problems. New technology engines are being developed with additional mechanical systems to increase the performance. As these technologies are developed the interactions between system inputs and outputs are increasingly coupled and therefore it is necessary to consider engines .as multivariable systems. Accordingly, for high performance control it is necessary to move away from single control loops or sequential SISO loop designs favoured until recently. To achieve high performance with the constraints of the PCM this thesis develops a series of 'engineer friendly' controller design tools. Two distinct parameter space (PS) control techniques are detailed, which are particularly suited to low and fixed order control. These methodologies are intended to be suitable for non-control experts by offering insights into the design constraints. The first technique is a novel PS approach to constrained and minimum variance (MV) controller design for both continuous and discrete systems. This technique is successfully applied to the peak pressure position (PPP) control problem using spark advance (SA) as the input. The second technique developed is a multivariable 'Hoc parameter space technique for designing fixed, low order controllers. This technique uses only frequency response information in the design scheme and is therefore equally suited to both continuous and discrete systems. Controllers are developed by a series of parameter plane iterations, which can be used for re-tuning controllers from alternative design methods. Equally, the technique can be used for the direct design of controllers, starting with no initial transfer function gains. The method is successfully demonstrated as a direct design technique for a single sensitivity problem with time response criteria. A further example demonstrates the technique for weighted sensitivity reduction using the direct design approach and also for re-tuning a reduced order controller obtained by an algebraic Riccati design. To facilitate the application of the multivariable PS technique, a novel approach to designing a feedforward fuelling controller for a port fuel injection (PFI) gasoline engine is detailed. The feedforward controller is based on inverse nonlinear auto-regressive moving average (NARMA) ordina.ry least squares (OLS) identification. The approach is applied successfully to the idle speed region of an engine and has the advantage on linearising the plant dynamics. The system with compensator is subsequently re-identified and coupled with a robust multivariable PS controller for control of the idle speed and air-to-fuel ratio (AFR).

23. Partnership for Environmental Technology Education. Discussion Paper No. 106.

Abstract

The need for broad cooperative effort directed toward the enhancement of science and mathematics education, including environmental science and technology, has been recognized as a national priority in the United States by government, industry, and the academic community. In an effort to address this need, the Partnership for Environmental Technology Education (PETE) has been established in the five western states of Arizona, California, Hawaii, Nevada, and Utah. PETE's overall objectives are to link the technical resources of the U.S. Department of Energy, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the U.S. Department of Defense and NASA laboratories and facilities, and private industry with participating community colleges to assist in the development and presentation of curricula for training environmental hazardous materials technicians and to encourage more transfer students to pursue studies in environmental science and engineering at four-year institutions. Preliminary results of a national assessment of the demand for these two-year-level technicians indicate the demand. Standing working groups have been formed to develop teaching materials and standards and an appropriate certification process. The PETE methodology is now being extended nationally through highly leveraged cooperation between participating federal agencies, private industry, and the academic community. (YLB)

Direct links between carbonaceous chondrites and their parent bodies in the solar system are rare. The Winchcombe meteorite is the most accurately recorded carbonaceous chondrite fall. Its pre-atmospheric orbit and cosmic-ray exposure age confirm that it arrived on Earth shortly after ejection from a primitive asteroid. Recovered only hours after falling, the composition of the Winchcombe meteorite is largely unmodified by the terrestrial environment. It contains abundant hydrated silicates formed during fluid-rock reactions, and carbon- and nitrogen-bearing organic matter including soluble protein amino acids. The near-pristine hydrogen isotopic composition of the Winchcombe meteorite is comparable to the terrestrial hydrosphere, providing further evidence that volatile-rich carbonaceous asteroids played an important role in the origin of Earth's water. Abstract

This thesis is concerned with the practical implications of manufacture testing of loaded printed circuit boards that are either fully or partially populated with chips that are equipped with IEEE 1149.1 Boundary-Scan. The work contained in this thesis is in 4 main areas; interconnect testing using boundary-scan, operating the boundary-scan architecture, verifying the manufacture of the boundary-scan architecture, and coping with partial implementations of boundary-scan. One of the main features of boundary-scan is the partitioning between the function of chips and their interconnect on the board. The algorithms that have been proposed for generating test sets for testing interconnect are analysed closely, and their performance for realistically-sized boards is assessed. An algorithm is also proposed for testing bus-structured systems; this produces test sequences shorter than previously suggested, and caters for common bus enables and CMOS charge-storing problems. The requirements of the software that is necessary to access boundary-scan are analysed, leading to a specification of the tasks in the test compilation process. This software has been implemented, with particular attention paid to the boundary-scan design variations that the standard permits. Before the boundary-scan architecture can be used to test other parts of a board, it must be verified that this has been manufactured correctly. The standard provides a means to do this, and the detection and diagnosis capabilities of this are analysed using a real circuit. This has led to modifications in the test procedure to improve its effectiveness. A particular problem is whether boards are designed where some of the chips on the board do not have boundary-scan; this situation is analysed, and possible solutions are suggested. A classification of the type of interconnect nets that can be encountered on a board is made, and this is then used to assess the detection and diagnostic performance of these solutions.

46. Digital Connections: Transforming Literacy in the Primary School

Abstract

Much has been written about the transformative influence of new technology on the school curriculum, but only a small number of studies have focused on the practical implications for primary literacy. The dominant paradigm seems less concerned with transformation, instead favouring a view of "technology as enrichment". This case study examines the possibilities of transformation through an electronically mediated partnership between two primary schools in the North of England. Children's digital texts are analysed alongside interview and observational data in order to document what transformation might look like in practice. The study illustrates how technology can be used to promote new literacy practices in the classroom, through the production of new kinds of texts. It also documents the emergence of peer-based learning relationships and changing perceptions of the teacher's role.

Abstract

A webinar series that was organised by the Academy of Pharmaceutical Sciences Biopharmaceutics focus group in 2021 focused on the challenges of developing clinically relevant dissolution specifications (CRDSs) for oral drug products. Industrial scientists, together with regulatory and academic scientists, came together through a series of six webinars, to discuss progress in the field, emerging trends, and areas for continued collaboration and harmonisation. Each webinar also hosted a Q&A session where participants could discuss the shared topic and information. Although it was clear from the presentations and Q&A sessions that we continue to make progress in the field of CRDSs and the utility/success of PBBM, there is also a need to continue the momentum and dialogue between the industry and regulators. 48. Using the Number Line to Investigate the Solving of Linear Equations

Abstract

The curriculum for eleven-year old students in the United Kingdom, currently adopted by most schools, includes solving linear equations with the unknown on one side only before moving onto those with the unknown on both sides in later years. School textbooks struggle with the balance between developing algebraic understanding and training algebraic skills. In this article the authors describe an attempt to encourage students to exploit an already familiar image, the number line, in order to address mathematical difficulties with solving linear equations. What should also be stressed, however, is that the authors do not consider this to be a new method for solving equations, nor a new form of representation. It is simply the exploitation of an image with which the students are already comfortable, to support their developing understandings of linear equations through access to the solution strategies available. This is a crucial distinction and will be referred to a number of times during the course of the article.

This book is aimed at a specific audience. Like others before it, it derives from teaching on courses designed to prepare postgraduates to become English teachers. It was designed both to explain the mainstream ideas that have shaped secondary school English and to help readers rehearse teaching which is based on those ideas.
