Noninvasive brain stimulation techniques (NiBS) have gathered substantial interest in the study of dementia, considered their possible role in help defining diagnostic biomarkers of altered neural activity for early disease detection and monitoring of its pathophysiological course, as well as for their therapeutic potential of boosting residual cognitive functions. Nevertheless, current approaches suffer from some limitations. In this study, we review and discuss experimental NiBS applications that might help improve the efficacy of future NiBS uses in Alzheimer's Disease (AD), including perturbation-based biomarkers for early diagnosis and disease tracking, solutions to enhance synchronization of oscillatory electroencephalographic activity across brain networks, enhancement of sleep-related memory consolidation, image-guided stimulation for connectome control, protocols targeting interneuron pathology and protein clearance, and finally hybrid-brain models for in-silico modeling of AD pathology and personalized target selection. The present work aims to stress the importance of multidisciplinary, translational, model-driven interventions for precision medicine approaches in AD.

Background: The Addressing Lupus Pillars for Health Advancement (ALPHA) Project is a global consensus initiative to identify, prioritize and address top barriers in lupus drug development, clinical care and access to care. The Lupus Foundation of America convenes ALPHA with Tufts Center for the Study of Drug Development and a Global Advisory Committee of lupus experts representing clinician-scientists, industry and patients. Objective(s): Collect global patient input to determine alignment with the lupus clinician-scientist community on prior published consensus of top lupus barriers. Method(s): A 23-question online Qualtrics survey was developed to identify challenges across lupus diagnosis, clinical care and research participation. The survey, available in English, Spanish, Korean and simplified Chinese, was fielded in November 2019 to people with lupus and caregivers of children <18 with lupus. SPSS 26 and SAS 9.4 were used for descriptive statistics and sub-analysis. Result(s): Analysis included only consented responses with >= 68% survey completion (n=3,447) received across 83 countries. 95% were female with a mean age of 45. Respondents reported being White (57%), Black or of African descent (14%), Hispanic or Latino (18%) and Asian (10%). 65% resided in the US while 35% resided in countries outside of the US. 97% were people with lupus while 3% were caregivers to children <18 with lupus. Highest ranked challenges were similar globally and across children and adults: medication side effects, lack of treatment options and high out-of-pocket costs. Managing side effects ranked significantly higher (p<.05) outside of the US (48%) compared to US (40%). 50% of caregivers reported managing side effects as the top challenge for children compared to 43% of adults (p<.05). Research participation was low (24%) and lower among children (16%). The top reason for not participating in a clinical trial was not being asked by their doctor. Geschwind Syndrome, a characteristic behavioral syndrome frequently described in patients affected by temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE), consists of the following features: hyper-religiosity, hypergraphia, hyposexuality, and irritability. Here we report the 9-year-clinical course of a case of Geschwind Syndrome that developed as a first and salient clinical expression of right temporal lobe variant of frontotemporal lobar degeneration (FTLD). Only one patient affected by frontotemporal dementia has previously been shown to present with Geschwind Syndrome. MS presented at age 73 with 3 years of personality and behavioral symptoms. Her early symptoms primarily included hyper-religiosity, hypergraphia, and poor emotional regulation (irritability, impulsivity, disinhibition, egocentric behavior). Over nine years, other cognitive functions (word retrieval, memory coding and recall, set-shifting, famous face and building recognition) became affected; however, hyper-religiosity, hypergraphia, and scarce emotional control remained her most prominent deficits. Longitudinal cortical thickness and volumetric analyses revealed early atrophy in the right temporal pole, right amygdala, and right hippocampus, which progressively affected homologous regions in the left hemisphere. The present case describes an unusual clinical picture associated with frontotemporal dementia (FTD), in which the most salient symptoms originated and remained consistent with Geschwind Syndrome.

A central paradigm in conservation biology is that population bottlenecks reduce genetic diversity and population viability. In an era of biodiversity loss and climate change, understanding the determinants and consequences of bottlenecks is therefore an important challenge. However, as most studies focus on single species, the multitude of potential drivers and the consequences of bottlenecks remain elusive. Here, we combined genetic data from over 11,000 individuals of 30 pinniped species with demographic, ecological and life history data to evaluate the consequences of commercial exploitation by 18th and 19th century sealers. We show that around one third of these species exhibit strong signatures of recent population declines. Bottleneck strength is associated with breeding habitat and mating system variation, and together with global abundance explains much of the variation in genetic diversity across species. Overall, bottleneck intensity is unrelated to IUCN status, although the three most heavily bottlenecked species are endangered. Our study reveals an unforeseen interplay between human exploitation, animal biology, demographic declines and genetic diversity.

A diffusion-barrier model described the early evolution of size-dependent photoluminescence emission from CdSe quantum dots formed by organometallic synthesis. Emission peak widths, emission redshift rates, and nanocrystal growth rates all decreased to a minimum at a reaction completion time. Growth after the completion time by Ostwald ripening was marked by a doubling of the activation energy. The temperature dependence of both reaction completion rates and photoluminescence redshift rates followed Arrhenius behavior governed by activation energies that increased with solvent molecular weight, in this limited case. In stearic acid and in trioctylphosphine oxide, the typical activation energies were 0.6 +/- 0.1 and 0.92 +/- 0.26 eV/molecule, respectively. (c) 2005 American Institute of Physics.
