Abstract

Resistivity measurements of a few-layer black phosphorus (bP) crystal in parallel magnetic fields up to 45 T are reported as a function of the angle between the in-plane field and the source-drain (S-D) axis of the device. The crystallographic directions of the bP crystal were determined by Raman spectroscopy, with the zigzag axis found within 5{\deg} of the S-D axis, and the armchair axis in the orthogonal planar direction. A transverse magneto-resistance (TMR) as well as a classically-forbidden longitudinal magneto-resistance (LMR) are observed. Both are found to be strongly anisotropic and non-monotonic with increasing in-plane field. Surprisingly, the relative magnitude (in %) of the positive LMR is larger than the TMR above $\sim$32 T. Considering the known anisotropy of bP whose zigzag and armchair effective masses differ by a factor of approximately seven, our experiment strongly suggests this LMR to be a consequence of the anisotropic Fermi surface of bP., Comment: 12 pages, 8 figures

Is it appropriate then for public schools to have local businesses as benefactors when teaching personnel are involved? The conflict between teacher quality and a local benefactor sometimes present ethical dilemmas. To what lengths should educational leaders go in order to secure school donations? As a principal you must be prepared to handle political and ethical situations, but foremost in your decision making must be, "What is best for the students."

Abstract

The type and extent of response that may be expected from the persons exposed to the noise of propfans cruising overhead is examined. The cruise mode is of particular interest because it appears that it is in this mode that the propfan airplane noise differs substantially from the noise of present jet-powered airplanes. Early test data on propfan engines suggests that noise levels on the ground under the flight track of commercial propfan transports may approach 65 decibels. To explore the reaction of the exposed population to repeated noise levels of this magnitude, it may be helpful to review some of the pertinent literature on the effects of environmental noise.

Physicians, hospitals, and other health care facilities will assume the responsibility for aiding individuals injured by a terrorist act involving radioactive material. Scenarios have been developed for such acts that include a range of exposures resulting in few to many casualties. This consensus document was developed by the Strategic National Stockpile Radiation Working Group to provide a framework for physicians in internal medicine and the medical subspecialties to evaluate and manage large-scale radiation injuries. Individual radiation dose is assessed by determining the time to onset and severity of nausea and vomiting, decline in absolute lymphocyte count over several hours or days after exposure, and appearance of chromosome aberrations (including dicentrics and ring forms) in peripheral blood lymphocytes. Documentation of clinical signs and symptoms (affecting the hematopoietic, gastrointestinal, cerebrovascular, and cutaneous systems) over time is essential for triage of victims, selection of therapy, and assignment of prognosis. Recommendations based on radiation dose and physiologic response are made for treatment of the hematopoletic syndrome. Therapy includes treatment with hematopoletic cytokines; blood transfusion; and, in selected cases, stem-cell transplantation., Published in the Annals of Internal Medicine, v140 n12 p1037-1051, 15 June 2004.

Documentation of clinical signs and symptoms (affecting the hematopoietic, gastrointestinal, cerebrovascular, and cutaneous systems) over time is essential for triage of victims, selection of therapy, and assignment of prognosis. Recommendations based on radiation dose and physiologic response are made for treatment of the hematopoietic syndrome. Therapy includes treatment with hematopoietic cytokines; blood transfusion; and, in selected cases, stem-cell transplantation. Additional medical management based on the evolution of clinical signs and symptoms includes the use of antimicrobial agents (quinolones, antiviral therapy, and antifungal agents), antiemetic agents, and analgesic agents. Because of the strong psychological impact of a possible radiation exposure, psychosocial support will be required for those exposed, regardless of the dose, as well as for family and friends. Treatment of pregnant women must account for risk to the fetus. Abstract

Recently, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms' (BATF) participation in the war on drugs and in combating violent crime has added significance to its law enforcement mission. BATF has a second mission, however--enforcing compliance with the excise tax laws applying to the industries it regulates--and those responsibilities have also been increasing. Thus BATF's dilemma is how to effectively manage the increased duties and competing demands. Abstract

Resistivity measurements of a black phosphorus (bP) field‐effect transistor 16 nm thick in parallel magnetic fields up to 45 T are reported as a function of the angle between the in‐plane field and the source–drain (S–D) axis of the device. The crystallographic directions of the bP crystal are determined by Raman spectroscopy, with the zigzag axis found to be within 5° of the S–D axis and the armchair axis in the orthogonal planar direction. A transverse magnetoresistance (TMR) as well as a classically forbidden longitudinal magnetoresistance (LMR) are observed. Both are found to be strongly anisotropic and nonmonotonic with increasing in‐plane field. Surprisingly, the relative magnitude (in %) of the positive LMR is larger than the TMR above ≈32 T. Considering the known anisotropy of bP whose zigzag and armchair effective masses differ by a factor of ≈7, the experiment strongly suggests this LMR to be a consequence of the anisotropic Fermi surface of bP.
