We present observations of the pulsar-wind nebula (PWN) region ofSNR 0540-69.3. The observations were made with the Atacama Compact Array (ACA) in Bands 4 and 6. We also add radio observations from the Australia Compact Array (ATCA) at 3 cm. For 1.449 - 233.50 GHz we obtain a synchrotron spectrum $F_{\nu} \propto \nu^{-\alpha_{\nu}}$, with the spectral index $\alpha_{\nu} = 0.17\pm{0.02}$. To conclude how this joins the synchrotron spectrum at higher frequencies we include hitherto unpublished AKARI mid-infrared data, and evaluate published data in the ultraviolet (UV), optical and infrared (IR). In particular, some broad-band filter data in the optical must be discarded from our analysis due to contamination by spectral line emission. For the UV/IR part of the synchrotron spectrum, we arrive at $\alpha_{\nu} = 0.87^{+0.08}_{-0.10}$. There is room for $2.5\times10^{-3}$ solar masses of dust with temperature $\sim 55$ K if there are dual breaks in the synchrotron spectrum, one around $\sim 9\times10^{10}$ Hz, and another at $\sim 2\times10^{13}$ Hz. The spectral index then changes at $\sim 9\times10^{10}$ Hz from $\alpha_{\nu} = 0.14\pm0.07$ in the radio, to $\alpha_{\nu} = 0.35^{-0.07}_{+0.05}$ in the millimetre to far-IR range. The ACA Band 6 data marginally resolves the PWN. In particular, the strong emission 1.5" south-west of the pulsar, seen at other wavelengths, and resolved in the 3-cm data with its 0.8" spatial resolution, is also strong in the millimeter range. The ACA data clearly reveal the supernova remnant shell 20-35 arcsec west of the pulsar, and for the shell we derive $\alpha_{\nu} = 0.64\pm{0.05}$ for the range $8.6-145$~GHz., Comment: MNRAS, accepted

We present a comprehensive X-ray study of the population of supernova remnants (SNRs) in the LMC. Using primarily XMM-Newton, we conduct a systematic spectral analysis of LMC SNRs to gain new insights on their evolution and the interplay with their host galaxy. We combined all the archival XMM observations of the LMC with those of our Very Large Programme survey. We produced X-ray images and spectra of 51 SNRs, out of a list of 59. Using a careful modelling of the background, we consistently analysed all the X-ray spectra and measure temperatures, luminosities, and chemical compositions. We investigated the spatial distribution of SNRs in the LMC and the connection with their environment, characterised by various SFHs. We tentatively typed all LMC SNRs to constrain the ratio of core-collapse to type Ia SN rates in the LMC. We compared the X-ray-derived column densities to HI maps to probe the three-dimensional structure of the LMC. This work provides the first homogeneous catalogue of X-ray spectral properties of LMC SNRs. It offers a complete census of LMC SNRs exhibiting Fe K lines (13% of the sample), or revealing contribution from hot SN ejecta (39%). Abundances in the LMC ISM are found to be 0.2-0.5 solar, with a lower [$\alpha$/Fe] than in the Milky Way. The ratio of CC/type Ia SN in the LMC is $N_{\mathrm{CC}}/N_{\mathrm{Ia}} = 1.35(_{-0.24}^{+0.11})$, lower than in local SN surveys and galaxy clusters. Comparison of X-ray luminosity functions of SNRs in Local Group galaxies reveals an intriguing excess of bright objects in the LMC. We confirm that 30 Doradus and the LMC Bar are offset from the main disc of the LMC, to the far and near sides, respectively. We present a detailed radio, X-ray and optical study of a newly discovered Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) supernova remnant (SNR) which we denote MCSNR J0508-6902. Observations from the Australian Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) and the $\textit{XMM-Newton}$ X-ray observatory are complemented by deep H$\alpha$ images and Anglo Australian Telescope AAOmega spectroscopic data to study the SNR shell and its shock-ionisation. Archival data at other wavelengths are also examined. The remnant follows a filled-in shell type morphology in the radio-continuum and has a size of $\sim$74 pc $\times$ 57 pc at the LMC distance. The X-ray emission exhibits a faint soft shell morphology with Fe-rich gas in its interior $-$ indicative of a Type Ia origin. The remnant appears to be mostly dissipated at higher radio-continuum frequencies leaving only the south-eastern limb fully detectable while in the optical it is the western side of the SNR shell that is clearly detected. The best-fit temperature to the shell X-ray emission ($kT = 0.41^{+0.05}_{-0.06}$ keV) is consistent with other large LMC SNRs. We determined an O/Fe ratio of $<21$ and an Fe mass of 0.5-1.8$~M_{\odot}$ in the interior of the remnant, both of which are consistent with the Type Ia scenario. We find an equipartition magnetic field for the remnant of $\sim$28 $\mu$G, a value typical of older SNRs and consistent with other analyses which also infer an older remnant.

Aims: We present a detailed multi-wavelength study of four new supernova remnants (SNRs) in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). The objects were identified as SNR candidates in X-ray observations performed during the survey of the LMC with XMM-Newton. Methods: Data obained with XMM-Newton are used to investigate the morphological and spectral features of the remnants in X-rays. We measure the plasma conditions, look for supernova (SN) ejecta emission, and constrain some of the SNR properties (e.g. age and ambient density). We supplement the X-ray data with optical, infrared, and radio-continuum archival observations, which allow us to understand the conditions resulting in the current appearance of the remnants. Based on the spatially-resolved star formation history (SFH) of the LMC together with the X-ray spectra, we attempt to type the supernovae that created the remnants. Results: We confirm all four objects as SNRs, to which we assign the names MCSNR J0508-6830, MCSNR J0511-6759, MCSNR J0514-6840, and MCSNR J0517-6759. In the first two remnants, an X-ray bright plasma is surrounded by very faint [S II] emission. The emission from the central plasma is dominated by Fe L-shell lines, and the derived iron abundance is greatly in excess of solar. This establishes their type Ia (i.e. thermonuclear) SN origin. They appear to be more evolved versions of other Magellanic Cloud iron-rich SNRs which are centrally-peaked in X-rays. From the two other remnants (MCSNR J0514-6840 and MCSNR J0517-6759), we do not see ejecta emission. At all wavelengths at which they are detected, the local environment plays a key role in their observational appearance. We present a detailed study of Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) observations of a newly discovered Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) supernova remnant (SNR), SNR J0533-7202. This object follows a horseshoe morphology, with a size 37 pc x 28 pc (1-pc uncertainty in each direction). It exhibits a radio spectrum with the intrinsic synchrotron spectral index of alpha= -0.47+-0.06 between 73 and 6 cm. We report detections of regions showing moderately high fractional polarisation at 6 cm, with a peak value of 36+-6% and a mean fractional polarisation of 12+-7%. We also estimate an average rotation measure across the remnant of -591 rad m^-2. The current lack of deep X-ray observation precludes any conclusion about high-energy emission from the remnant. A Chandra observation of the Large Magellanic Cloud supernova remnant DEM L241 reveals an interior unresolved source which is probably an accretion-powered binary. The optical counterpart is an O5III(f) star making this a High-Mass X-ray Binary (HMXB) with orbital period likely to be of order tens of days. Emission from the remnant interior is thermal and spectral information is used to derive density and mass of the hot material. Elongation of the remnant is unusual and possible causes of this are discussed. The precursor star probably had mass > 25 solar masses

We present new X-ray and radio data of the LMC SNR candidate DEM L205, obtained by XMM-Newton and ATCA, along with archival optical and infrared observations. We use data at various wavelengths to study this object and its complex neighbourhood, in particular in the context of the star formation activity, past and present, around the source. We analyse the X-ray spectrum to derive some remnant's properties, such as age and explosion energy. Supernova remnant features are detected at all observed wavelengths: soft and extended X-ray emission is observed, arising from a thermal plasma with a temperature kT between 0.2 keV and 0.3 keV. Optical line emission is characterised by an enhanced [SII]/Halpha ratio and a shell-like morphology, correlating with the X-ray emission. The source is not or only tentatively detected at near-infrared wavelengths (< 10 microns), but there is a detection of arc-like emission at mid and far-infrared wavelengths (24 and 70 micron) that can be unambiguously associated with the remnant. We suggest that thermal emission from dust heated by stellar radiation and shock waves is the main contributor to the infrared emission. Finally, an extended and faint non-thermal radio emission correlates with the remnant at other wavelengths and we find a radio spectral index between -0.7 and -0.9, within the range for SNRs. The size of the remnant is ~79x64 pc and we estimate a dynamical age of about 35000 years. We definitely confirm DEM L205 as a new SNR. This object ranks amongst the largest remnants known in the LMC. The numerous massive stars and the recent outburst in star formation around the source strongly suggest that a core-collapse supernova is the progenitor of this remnant. Context: The Supernova Remnants (SNRs) known in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) show a variety of morphological structures in the different wavelength bands. This variety is the product of the conditions in the surrounding medium with which the remnant interacts and the inherent circumstances of the supernova event itself. Aims: This paper performs a multi-frequency study of the LMC SNR J0530-7007 by combining Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA), Molonglo Observatory Synthesis Telescope (MOST), R\"ontgensatellit (ROSAT) and Magellanic Clouds Emission Line Survey (MCELS) observations. Methods: We analysed radio-continuum, X-ray and optical data and present a multi-wavelength morphological study of LMC SNR J0530-7007. Results We find that this object has a shell-type morphology with a size of 215"x180" (52 pc x 44 pc); a radio spectral index (alpha=-0.85+-0.13); with [Sii]/Halpha > 0.4 in the optical; and the presence of non-thermal radio and X-ray emission. We report the ATCA and ROSAT detection of Supernova Remnant (SNR) J0529--6653 in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) which is positioned in the projected vicinity of the known radio pulsar PSR B0529-66. In the radio-continuum frequencies, this LMC object follows a typical SNR structure of a shell morphology with brightened regions in the south-west. It exhibits an almost circular shape of D=33 x 31 pc (1 pc uncertainty in each direction) and radio spectral index of alpha=-0.68$+-$0.03 - typical for mid-age SNRs. We also report detection of polarised regions with a peak value of 17+-7% at 6 cm. An investigation of ROSAT images produced from merged PSPC data reveals the presence of extended X-ray emission coincident with the radio emission of the SNR. In X-rays, the brightest part is in the north-east. We discuss various scenarios in regards to the SNR-PSR association with emphasis on the large age difference, lack of a pulsar trail and no prominent point-like radio or X-ray source., Comment: 8 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We report the extragalactic radio-continuum detection of 15 planetary nebulae (PNe) in the Magellanic Clouds (MCs) from recent Australia Telescope Compact Array+Parkes mosaic surveys. These detections were supplemented by new and high resolution radio, optical and IR observations which helped to resolve the true nature of the objects. Four of the PNe are located in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) and 11 are located in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). Based on Galactic PNe the expected radio flux densities at the distance of the LMC/SMC are up to ~2.5 mJy and ~2.0 mJy at 1.4 GHz, respectively. We find that one of our new radio PNe in the SMC has a flux density of 5.1 mJy at 1.4 GHz, several times higher than expected. We suggest that the most luminous radio PN in the SMC (N S68) may represent the upper limit to radio peak luminosity because it is ~3 times more luminous than NGC 7027, the most luminous known Galactic PN. We note that the optical diameters of these 15 MCs PNe vary from very small (~0.08 pc or 0.32"; SMP L47) to very large (~1 pc or 4"; SMP L83). Their flux densities peak at different frequencies, suggesting that they may be in different stages of evolution. We briefly discuss mechanisms that may explain their unusually high radio-continuum flux densities. We argue that these detections may help solve the "missing mass problem" in PNe whose central stars were originally 1-8 Msun. We explore the possible link between ionised halos ejected by the central stars in their late evolution and extended radio emission. A Chandra observation has defined the extent of the SNR B 0454-692 in the LMC H II region N9. The remnant has dimension 2.3" x 3.6" and is elongated in the NS direction. The brightest emission comes from a NS central ridge which includes three bright patches. There is good agreement between X-ray and [O III] and [S II] morphology. The remnant is old enough so that optical data give more information about dynamics than do the X-ray data. The SN energy release was >= 4 x 10^50 ergs and the age is ~3 x 10^4 years. There are several unresolved sources nearby but none are clearly associated with the remnant. The X-ray spectrum is soft and indicates enhanced Fe abundance in the central region, consistent with a Type Ia SN origin, but a Type II origin cannot be ruled out., Comment: AASTeX, 20 pages including 5 figures. Using Spitzer Space Telescope and Hubble Space Telescope observations of the superbubble N51D, we have identified three young stellar objects (YSOs) in dust globules, and made the first detection of a Herbig-Haro object outside the Galaxy. The spectral energy distributions of these YSOs suggest young massive stars with disk, envelope, and outflow cavities. The N206 supernova remnant (SNR) in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) has long been considered a prototypical "mixed morphology" SNR. Recent observations, however, have added a new twist to this familiar plot: an elongated, radially-oriented radio feature seen in projection against the SNR face. Utilizing the high resolution and sensitivity available with the Hubble Space Telescope, Chandra, and XMM-Newton, we have obtained optical emission-line images and spatially resolved X-ray spectral maps for this intriguing SNR. Our findings present the SNR itself as a remnant in the mid to late stages of its evolution. X-ray emission associated with the radio "linear feature" strongly suggests it to be a pulsar-wind nebula (PWN). A small X-ray knot is discovered at the outer tip of this feature. The feature's elongated morphology and the surrounding wedge-shaped X-ray enhancement strongly suggest a bow-shock PWN structure., Comment: 41 pages including 7 figures, accepted for publication by the Astrophysical Journal

We present a study of the Faraday rotation of extragalactic sources lying behind the Large Magellanic Cloud. We have measured the Faraday rotation toward a large sample of polarized radio sources behind the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), to determine the structure of this galaxy's magnetic field. The magnetic field of the LMC consists of a coherent axisymmetric spiral of field strength ~1 microgauss. Strong fluctuations in the magnetic field are also seen, on small (<0.5 parsecs) and large (~100 parsecs) scales. The significant bursts of recent star formation and supernova activity in the LMC argue against standard dynamo theory, adding to the growing evidence for rapid field amplification in galaxies., Comment: 15 pages, including 3 embedded EPS figures (1 color, 2 b/w) plus supporting on-line material; uses scicite.sty. Detailed 4.8- and 8.6-GHz radio images of the entire Large Magellanic Cloud with half-power beamwidths of 33" at 4.8 GHz and 20" at 8.6 GHz have been obtained using the Australia Telescope Compact Array. A total of 7085 mosaic positions were used to cover an area of 6 degrees on a side. Full polarimetric observations were made. These images have sufficient spatial resolution (~8 and 5 pc, respectively) and sensitivity (3-sigma of 1 mJy/beam) to identify most of the individual SNRs and H II regions and also, in combination with available data from the Parkes 64-m telescope, the structure of the smooth emission in that galaxy. In addition, limited data using the sixth antenna at 4.5 to 6-km baselines are available to distinguish bright point sources (<3 and 2 arcsec, respectively) and to help estimate sizes of individual sources smaller than the resolution of the full survey. The giant HII region 30 Doradus is known for its violent internal motions and bright diffuse X-ray emission, suggesting the existence of supernova remnants (SNRs), but no nonthermal radio emission has been detected. Recently, Lazendic et al. compared the H-alpha/H-beta and radio/H-alpha ratios and suggested two small radio sources to be nonthermal and thus SNR candidates; however, no optical or X-ray counterparts were detected. We have used high-resolution optical images and high-dispersion spectra to examine the morphological, spectral, and kinematic properties of these two SNR candidates, and still find no optical evidence supporting their identification as SNRs. We have also determined the X-ray luminosities of these SNR candidates, and find them 1-3 orders of magnitude lower than those commonly seen in young SNRs. High extinction can obscure optical and X-ray signatures of an SNR, but would prohibit the use of a high radio/H-alpha ratio to identify nonthermal radio emission. We suggest that the SNR candidate MCRX J053831.8-690620 is associated with a young star forming region; while the radio emission originates from the obscured star forming region, the observed optical emission is dominated by the foreground. We present the first X-ray detection of SNR 0450-70.9 the largest known supernova remnant (SNR) in the Large Magellanic Cloud. To study the physical conditions of this SNR, we have obtained XMM-Newton X-ray observations, optical images and high-dispersion spectra, and radio continuum maps. Optical images of SNR 0450-70.9 show a large, irregular elliptical shell with bright filaments along the eastern and western rims and within the shell interior. The interior filaments have higher [S II]/Halpha ratios and form an apparent inner shell morphology. The X-ray emission region is smaller than the full extent of the optical shell, with the brightest X-ray emission found within the small interior shell and on the western rim of the large shell. The expansion velocity of the small shell is ~220 km/s, while the large shell is ~120 km/s. The radio image shows central brightening and a fairly flat radio spectral index over the SNR. However, no point X-ray or radio source corresponding to a pulsar is detected and the X-ray emission is predominantly thermal. Therefore, these phenomena can be most reasonably explained in terms of the advanced age of the large SNR. Using hydrodynamic models combined with a nonequilibrium ionization model for thermal X-ray emission, we derived a lower limit on the SNR age of about 45,000 yr, well into the later stages of SNR evolution. Despite this, the temperature and density derived from spectral fits to the X-ray emission indicate that the remnant is still overpressured, and thus that the development is largely driven by hot gas in the SNR interior., Comment: Accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal

We have detected a spatially resolved supernova remnant (SNR) in the center of the Andromeda Galaxy, in radio, X-ray, and optical wavelengths. These observations provide the highest spatial resolution imaging of a radio/X-ray/optical SNR in that galaxy to date. The multi-wavelength morphology, radio spectral index, X-ray colors, and narrow-band optical imaging are consistent with a shell-type SNR. A second SNR is also seen resolved in both radio and X-ray. By comparing the morphological sturcture of the SNRs in different wavelengths and with that in our own Galaxy, we can study the shock morphologies of SNRs in the Andromeda Galaxy. The proximity of the SNRs to the core suggests high interstellar medium density in the vicinity of the SNRs in the center of the Andromeda Galaxy., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in ApJL

We report Chandra X-ray observations of the supernova remnant N157B in the Large Magellanic Cloud, which are presented together with an archival HST optical image and a radio continuum map for comparison. This remnant contains the recently discovered 16 ms X-ray pulsar PSR J0537-6910, the most rapidly rotating young pulsar known. Using phase-resolved Chandra imaging, we pinpoint the location of the pulsar to within an uncertainty of less than 1 arcsec. PSR J0537-6910 is not detected in any other wavelength band. The X-ray observations resolve three distinct features: the pulsar itself, a surrounding compact wind nebula which is strongly elongated and a feature of large-scale diffuse emission trailing from the pulsar. This latter comet tail-shaped feature coexists with enhanced radio emission and is oriented nearly perpendicular to the major axis of the pulsar wind nebula. We propose the following scenario to explain these features. The bright, compact nebula is likely powered by a toroidal pulsar wind of relativistic particles which is partially confined by the ram-pressure from the supersonic motion of the pulsar. The particles, after being forced out from the compact nebula (the head of the ``comet''), are eventually dumped into a bubble (the tail), which is primarily responsible for the extended diffuse X-ray and radio emission. The ram-pressure confinement also allows a natural explanation for the observed X-ray luminosity of the compact nebula and for the unusually small X-ray to spin-down luminosity ratio, compared to similarly energetic pulsars. We estimate the pulsar wind Lorentz factor of N157B as about 4 times 10^6 (with an uncertainty of a factor about 2, consistent with that inferred from the modeling of the Crab Nebula., Comment: 15 pages plus 4 figures. High resolution radio observations of the composite supernova remnant (SNR) G326.3-1.8 or MSH 15-56 with the Australia Telescope Compact Array show details of both the shell and the bright plerion which is offset about 1/3 of the distance from the center of the SNR to the shell. The shell appears to be composed of thin filaments, typical of older shell SNRs. The central part of the elongated plerion is composed of a bundle of parallel ridges which bulge out at the ends and form a distinct ring structure on the northwestern end. The magnetic field with a strength of order 45 microGauss, is directed along the axis of the ridges but circles around the northwestern ring. This plerion is large and bright in the radio but is not detected in x-ray or optical wavelengths. There is, however, a faint hard x-ray feature closer to the shell outside the plerion. Perhaps if the supernova explosion left a rapidly moving magnetar with large energy input but initially rapid decay of both relativistic particles and magnetic field, the observed differences with wavelength could be explained., Comment: 15 pages, 10 figures, accepted by ApJ

A new investigation of the supernova remnant (SNR) N157B was carried out with the Australia Telescope Compact Array. Radio continuum images of the entire 30 Doradus region have been made at 3.5 and 6 cm wavelength with a resolution of 2". These data allow a high resolution study of the spectral index distribution and polarization properties of both N157B and the nearby 30 Doradus nebula (the latter will be reported in a subsequent paper). N157B is an extended Crab-type SNR which may be beginning the transition to a composite remnant. There is little apparent fine structure and the brightest radio region is several parsecs from the probable position of the X-ray pulsar. The SNR has a radio spectral index of -0.19 and is significantly polarized at 3.5 cm but not at longer wavelengths., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures

The radio emission from the remnant of Tycho's supernova of 1572 arises in a nearly circular, clumpy shell. A very distinct, thin bright rim just outside the main shell can be seen around most of the periphery of the remnant. The outer edge of radio emission, usually defined by this bright rim, coincides perfectly with the outer X-ray boundary. Most of the emission is polarized by a modest amount, with the outer rim particularly prominent. Observations at several wavelengths are used to map out the rotation measure at high angular resolution, and determine the intrinsic magnetic field direction. The magnetic field shows a somewhat cellular pattern but with a net radial orientation and a generally fairly low degree of polarization.

Multiwavelength observations of the supernova remnant IC 443 at radio, infrared, optical, ultraviolet, and X-ray wavelengths are presented. This morphological study of IC 443 presents a detailed picture of an adolescent supernova remnant in a multiphase interstellar medium. Radio observations show that better than 80 percent of the continuum emission at 18 cm is in a large-scale (greater than 18 arcmin) component. Decomposition of the infrared data shows that radiatively heated dust, shocked blackbody dust emission, and infrared line emission are all important components of the observed IRAS fluxes. The morphology of the IC 443 region is consistent with a supernova blast in an interstellar medium with a nonuniform distribution of clouds. The bright northeast rim and the great extent of the remnant to the southwest are most easily explained by a cloud filling factor which is greatest in the northeast and falls off toward the southwest.

Each of the youngest supernova remnants known in the Milky Way, Cas A, Kepler's SNR, and Tycho's SNR, shows a different morphological structure caused by different conditions in the progenitor stars and their surroundings. In all three cases, however, the observed shells have a thickness of about 1/4 the radius, a sharp outer edge, and significant brightness irregularities. These features require that the circumstellar medium be highly clumped. To investigate the phenomenon, models of the expansion have been constructed using a one-dimensional spherical hydrodynamic code. As a supernova shock moves down the external density gradient of the star, material behind the shock begins to go into free expansion. Then as surrounding material is encountered a reverse shock moving back into the ejectum will be formed. Until the expansion has swept up about eight times the ejected mass when the situation can be considered as a point explosion in its surroundings, the dynamics are controlled by conditions between the shocks. The region is also where the synchrotron radio emission from relativistic electrons trapped in magnetic fields arises. Initial particles and fields are accelerated and amplified by eddy motion at the interface between the ejected and swept-up material and at the boundaries of clumps. Polarimetry shows that these SNR have a net radial orientation of their magnetic fields apparently from stretching by Rayleigh-Taylor instabilities at the contact surfaces. Without clumps the observed shell is much too narrow and steep on the inside.

VLA maps of Jupiter's thermal emission at 1.3, 2, 6, and 20 cm wavelengths are presented. The resolution at the four wavelengths is 0.218, 0.075, 0.108, and 0.144 Jovian radii, respectively. Bright bands across the disk are clearly visible at 2 and 6 cm. These bands agree with the dark belts seen at optical and the bright bands seen at infrared wavelengths.

Radio observations of the northeastern part of the Cygnus Loop obtained with the VLA at 18 cm with a resolution of 4.7 arcsec are presented and discussed. In general, the brightest radio filaments match the brightest optical filaments very well, particularly those which are bright in H-alpha. The agreement in position, morphology, and relative brightness is particularly good where all four optical species are bright. However, a few bright radio features have no bright optical counterparts. The general radio and optical structure of the region can be explained by a model in which shocked interstellar clouds form filaments due to unstable cooling and compression. The features appear to be ropelike, although it is not possible to rule out that they are irregular sheets seen edge-on. A large gradation in cooling on a scale of parsecs is evidenced by the sequence of the optical species in emission, with a corresponding increase in density generally evidenced by the continuum radio emission.

A radio search has been conducted for optical SNR candidates in the external galaxies NGC 185, IC 1613, and NGC 6822. A faint, nonthermal radio source has been found at the expected position in IC 1613. Upper limits are placed on the objects in NGC 185 and NGC 6822. All three appear fainter than typical SNR of the same size in the Milky Way.

Identification of supernova remnants (SNR) in external galaxies through the combined use of radio, optical and X-ray surveys is discussed. Some 24 likely distant galaxy SNR have been found in the past six years, though confirmation is often difficult. Radio surveys of other galaxies are restricted by background object contamination in the field, and confirmation of these candidates requires other techniques. Optical measurement of the ratio of the forbidden SII doublet at .6717 and .6731 microns to H-alpha, followed by spectroscopic or radio confirmation, has successfully identified SNR in the LMC and other galaxies, though few in number. Most of the SNR in the Magellanic Clouds have been detected as X-ray emitters, but towards M31 there are no coincidences between the lists of optical SNR and X-ray sources. An increase in SNR identifications should result from use of the Space Telescope and continued use of the VLA.

Observations at a wavelength of 1.32 mm have been made of the Jovian planets, Ceres, the satellites Callisto and Ganymede, and the HII region DR 21. The observed brightness temperatures are presented. Those of the Jovian planets agree with the values expected from model atmosphere calculations, except that of Jupiter, which is lower than expected. Ceres and the satellites do not have atmospheres so their emission arised in their subsurface layers. The observed brightness temperatures are intermediate between those measured at infrared and centimeter wavelengths.

High-resolution radio images of Kepler's SNR (SNR (SN 1604) at 6 and 21 cm have been obtained using the VLA. The orientation of linear polarization in the SNR implies a substantial nonrandom radial component for the magnetic field of the remnant. Based on a new X-ray picture of the SNR, obtained using the Einstein Observatory, a detailed comparison of the X-ray and radio morphology is carried out. There is a good correlation between rotation measure, obtained from the radio maps, and emission measure, an X-ray-derived quantity in the SNR shell. From the mean electron density value infered from an analysis of X-ray fluxes, a mean radial magnetic field of 14 micro G and a total magnetic field of 70 microG are estimated. The energy density of relativistic electrons in Kepler's SNR in the shell comparable to the energy density in the magnetic field; the relativistic electron-pressure is 2 percent of the thermal gas pressure. The strong correlation between radio emissivity and X-ray emissivity found over the SNR in somewhat large scale can be ascribed to acceleration of thermal electrons at the shock wave and insignificant diffusion of resultant relativistic electrons.
