Abstract

Symbolic regression searches for analytic expressions that accurately describe studied phenomena. The main attraction of this approach is that it returns an interpretable model that can be insightful to users. Historically, the majority of algorithms for symbolic regression have been based on evolutionary algorithms. However, there has been a recent surge of new proposals that instead utilize approaches such as enumeration algorithms, mixed linear integer programming, neural networks, and Bayesian optimization. In order to assess how well these new approaches behave on a set of common challenges often faced in real-world data, we hosted a competition at the 2022 Genetic and Evolutionary Computation Conference consisting of different synthetic and real-world datasets which were blind to entrants. For the real-world track, we assessed interpretability in a realistic way by using a domain expert to judge the trustworthiness of candidate models.We present an in-depth analysis of the results obtained in this competition, discuss current challenges of symbolic regression algorithms and highlight possible improvements for future competitions., Comment: 13 pages, 13 figures, submitted to IEEE Transactions on Evolutionary Computation

Abstract

Abstract Background Obtaining a properly fitting non-invasive ventilation (NIV) mask to treat acute respiratory failure is a major challenge, especially in young children and patients with craniofacial abnormalities. Personalization of NIV masks holds promise to improve pediatric NIV efficiency. As current customization methods are relatively time consuming, this study aimed to test the air leak and surface pressure performance of personalized oronasal face masks using 3D printed soft materials. Personalized masks of three different biocompatible materials (silicone and photopolymer resin) were developed and tested on three head models of young children with abnormal facial features during preclinical bench simulation of pediatric NIV. Air leak percentages and facial surface pressures were measured and compared for each mask. Results Personalized NIV masks could be successfully produced in under 12 h in a semi-automated 3D production process. During NIV simulation, overall air leak performance and applied surface pressures were acceptable, with leak percentages under 30% and average surface pressure values mostly remaining under normal capillary pressure. There was a small advantage of the masks produced with soft photopolymer resin material. Conclusion This first, proof-of-concept bench study simulating NIV in children with abnormal facial features, showed that it is possible to obtain biocompatible, personalized oronasal masks with acceptable air leak and facial surface pressure performance using a relatively short, and semi-automated production process. Further research into the clinical value and possibilities for application of personalized NIV masks in critically ill children is needed.

9. Indications of marine benthos occurrence from multi-spectral multi-beam backscatter data: a case study in the North Sea

Abstract

To facilitate the conservation of seafloor habitats and planning of offshore activities, there is a growing need for mapping marine benthos in an effective and efficient way. Acoustic data acquired by multi-beam echosounders (MBES) have been extensively used for large-scale and high-resolution seafloor characterization. A deeper understanding of the relationship between backscatter data and sediment compositions can help to identify the benthos occurrence from the MBES data. With two multi-spectral MBES datasets collected near the western Wadden Sea islands in the North Sea, we investigated the potential of mapping marine benthos through backscatter classification. Two unsupervised classification methods, i.e., Bayesian classification, which mainly exploits the backscatter strength from incident angles larger than 20°, and hierarchical clustering of the backscatter strength at different angular ranges, were employed and the results were compared. The classification results from both methods showed a good correspondence with sediment properties such as the median grain size. Moreover, based on a principal component analysis of bottom sample properties, the hierarchical clustering results indicated a better distinction between contributions from the gravel content and benthos occurrence, e.g., sand mason worm density, than Bayesian classification, through involving the backscatter angular variations. Classification for multiple frequencies, on the other hand, showed little difference regarding the relationship with bottom sample properties. Although the backscatter difference between frequencies was also found to positively correlate with certain sample properties, using multi-spectral features for acoustic classification in this study did not reveal additional information compared to single-frequency classification results.

Abstract

Noninvasive respiratory support delivered through a face mask has become a cornerstone treatment for adults and children with acute or chronic respiratory failure. However, an imperfect mask fit by using commercially available interfaces is frequently encountered, which may result in patient discomfort and treatment inefficiency or failure. To overcome this challenge, over the past decade, increasing attention has been given to the development of personalized face masks, which are custom-made to address the specific facial dimensions of an individual patient. With this scoping review, we aim to provide a comprehensive overview of the current advances and gaps in knowledge with regard to the personalization masks for CPAP and NIV. We performed a systematic search of the literature and identified and summarized a total of 23 studies. Most studies included were involved in the development of nasal masks. Studies that targeted adult respiratory care mainly focused on chronic (home) ventilation and included some clinical testing in a relevant subject population. In contrast, pediatric studies focused mostly on respiratory support in the acute setting, whereas testing was limited to bench or case studies only. Most studies were positive with regard to the performance (ie, comfort, level of air leak, and mask pressure applied to the skin) of personalized masks in bench testing or in human, healthy or patient, subjects. Advances in the field of 3-dimensional scanning and soft material printing were identified, but important gaps in knowledge remain. In particular, more insight into cushion materials, headgear design, clinical feasibility, and cost-effectiveness is needed before definite recommendations can be made with regard to implementation of large-scale clinical programs that personalize noninvasive respiratory support masks for adults and children. Abstract

Symbolic regression searches for analytic expressions that accurately describe studied phenomena. The main promise of this approach is that it may return an interpretable model that can be insightful to users, while maintaining high accuracy. The current standard for benchmarking these algorithms is SRBench, which evaluates methods on hundreds of datasets that are a mix of real-world and simulated processes spanning multiple domains. At present, the ability of SRBench to evaluate interpretability is limited to measuring the size of expressions on real-world data, and the exactness of model forms on synthetic data. In practice, model size is only one of many factors used by subject experts to determine how interpretable a model truly is. Furthermore, SRBench does not characterize algorithm performance on specific, challenging sub-tasks of regression such as feature selection and evasion of local minima. In this work, we propose and evaluate an approach to benchmarking SR algorithms that addresses these limitations of SRBench by 1) incorporating expert evaluations of interpretability on a domain-specific task, and 2) evaluating algorithms over distinct properties of data science tasks. We evaluate 12 modern symbolic regression algorithms on these benchmarks and present an in-depth analysis of the results, discuss current challenges of symbolic regression algorithms and highlight possible improvements for the benchmark itself.

Abstract

The Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) is a key asset for tropospheric monitoring. Currently, GNSS meteorology relies primarily on geodetic-grade stations. However, such stations are too costly to be densely deployed, which limits the contribution of GNSS to tropospheric monitoring. In 2016, Google released the raw GNSS measurement application programming interface for smartphones running on Android version 7.0 and higher. Given that nowadays there are billions of Android smartphones worldwide, utilizing those devices for atmospheric monitoring represents a remarkable scientific opportunity. In this study, smartphone GNSS data collected in Germany as part of the Application of Machine Learning Technology for GNSS IoT Data Fusion (CAMALIOT) crowdsourcing campaign in 2022 were utilized to investigate this idea. Approximately 20 000 raw GNSS observation files were collected there during the campaign. First, a dedicated data processing pipeline was established that consists of two major parts: machine learning (ML)-based data selection and ionosphere-free precise point positioning (PPP)-based zenith total delay (ZTD) estimation. The proposed method was validated with a dedicated smartphone data collection experiment conducted on the rooftop of the ETH campus. The results confirmed that ZTD estimates of millimeter-level precision could be achieved with smartphone data collected in an open-sky environment. The impacts of observation time span and utilization of multi-GNSS observations on ZTD estimation were also investigated. Subsequently, the crowdsourced data from Germany were processed by PPP with the ionospheric delays interpolated using observations from surrounding satellite positioning service of the German National Survey (SAPOS) GNSS stations. The ZTDs derived from ERA5 and an ML-based ZTD product served as benchmarks. The results revealed that an accuracy of better than 10 mm can be achieved by utilizing selected high-quality crowdsourced smartphone data.

23. Physiologic responses to a staircase lung volume optimization maneuver in pediatric high-frequency oscillatory ventilation

Abstract

Abstract Background Titration of the continuous distending pressure during a staircase incremental–decremental pressure lung volume optimization maneuver in children on high-frequency oscillatory ventilation is traditionally driven by oxygenation and hemodynamic responses, although validity of these metrics has not been confirmed. Methods Respiratory inductance plethysmography values were used construct pressure–volume loops during the lung volume optimization maneuver. The maneuver outcome was evaluated by three independent investigators and labeled positive if there was an increase in respiratory inductance plethysmography values at the end of the incremental phase. Metrics for oxygenation (SpO2, FiO2), proximal pressure amplitude, tidal volume and transcutaneous measured pCO2 (ptcCO2) obtained during the incremental phase were compared between outcome maneuvers labeled positive and negative to calculate sensitivity, specificity, and the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve. Ventilation efficacy was assessed during and after the maneuver by measuring arterial pH and PaCO2. Hemodynamic responses during and after the maneuver were quantified by analyzing heart rate, mean arterial blood pressure and arterial lactate. Results 41/54 patients (75.9%) had a positive maneuver albeit that changes in respiratory inductance plethysmography values were very heterogeneous. During the incremental phase of the maneuver, metrics for oxygenation and tidal volume showed good sensitivity (> 80%) but poor sensitivity. The sensitivity of the SpO2/FiO2 ratio increased to 92.7% one hour after the maneuver. The proximal pressure amplitude showed poor sensitivity during the maneuver, whereas tidal volume showed good sensitivity but poor specificity. PaCO2 decreased and pH increased in patients with a positive and negative maneuver outcome. No new barotrauma or hemodynamic instability (increase in age-adjusted heart rate, decrease in age-adjusted mean arterial blood pressure or lactate > 2.0 mmol/L) occurred as a result of the maneuver. Conclusions Absence of improvements in oxygenation during a lung volume optimization maneuver did not indicate that there were no increases in lung volume quantified using respiratory inductance plethysmography. Increases in SpO2/FiO2 one hour after the maneuver may suggest ongoing lung volume recruitment. Ventilation was not impaired and there was no new barotrauma or hemodynamic instability. The heterogeneous responses in lung volume changes underscore the need for monitoring tools during high-frequency oscillatory ventilation.

31. B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia in an elderly man with plasma cell myeloma and long-term exposure to thalidomide and lenalidomide: a case report and literature review

Abstract

Abstract Background The advent of the immunomodulatory imide drugs (IMiDs) lenalidomide and thalidomide for the treatment of patients with plasma cell myeloma (PCM), has contributed to more than a doubling of the overall survival of these individuals. As a result, PCM patients join survivors of other malignancies such as breast and prostate cancer with a relatively new clinical problem – second primary malignancies (SPMs) – many of which are a result of the treatment of the initial cancer. PCM patients have a statistically significant increased risk for acute myeloid leukemia (AML) and Kaposi sarcoma. IMiD treatment has also been associated with an increased risk of myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS), AML, and squamous cell carcinoma of the skin. However, within these overlapping groups, acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) is much less common. Case presentation Herein, we describe an elderly man with PCM and a 14-year cumulative history of IMiD therapy who developed persistent pancytopenia and was diagnosed with B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (B-ALL). He joins a group of 17 other patients documented in the literature who have followed a similar sequence of events starting with worsening cytopenias while on IMiD maintenance for PCM. These PCM patients were diagnosed with B-ALL after a median time of 36 months after starting IMiD therapy and at a median age of 61.5 years old. Conclusions PCM patients with subsequent B-ALL have a poorer prognosis than their de novo B-ALL counterparts, however, the very low prevalence rate of subsequent B-ALL and high efficacy of IMiD maintenance therapy in PCM should not alter physicians’ current practice. Instead, there should be a low threshold for bone marrow biopsy for unexplained cytopenias.

Abstract Background High-frequency oscillatory ventilation (HFOV) is a common but unproven management strategy in paediatric critical care. Oscillator settings have been traditionally guided by patient age and/or weight rather than by lung mechanics, thereby potentially negating any beneficial effects. Abstract

Astrobiology, the study of life as a planetary phenomenon, aims to understand the fundamental nature of life on earth and the possibility of life elsewhere. To achieve this goal, astrobiologists have initiated unprecedented communication between the disciplines of astronomy, biology, chemistry, and geology. The Astrobiology Primer has been created as a reference tool for those who are interested in the interdisciplinary field of astrobiology. The field incorporates many diverse research endeavors, but it is our hope that this slim volume will present the reader with all he or she needs to know to become involved and to understand, at least at a fundamental level, the state of the art. Because of the great diversity of material, each section was written by a different author with a different expertise. The Primer was constructed collaboratively. Ninety researchers from around the world contributed information with regard to what they expected from other astrobiologists and what they would like to know themselves but still had difficulty understanding (see Contributors). Those submissions were read and considered by the Editors who produced a list of seven general categories of knowledge, represented by the seven chapters in the Primer: 1) Stellar Formation and Evolution, 2) Planetary Formation and Evolution, 3) Astrobiogeochemistry and the Origin of Life, 4) Evolution of Life through Time, 5) Planet Detection & Characterization, 6) Diversity of Life, and 7) Science in Space. Abstract

Despite representing 30% to 40% of newly diagnosed cases of adult non-Hodgkin lymphoma, diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) rarely presents (1) in the leukemic phase (2) with dysregulation of the TP53 tumor suppressor gene and (3) an elevated serum lactic acid level. In this case report and literature review, we highlight this unfortunate triad of poor prognostic features associated with an aggressive and fatal clinical course in a 53-year-old man with recrudescent DLBCL. A leukemic presentation of de novo or relapsed DLBCL is rare and may be related to differential expressions of adhesion molecules on cell surfaces. In addition, TP53 gene mutations are present in approximately 20% to 25% of DLBCL cases and foreshadow worse clinical outcomes. Finally, an elevated serum lactic acid level in DLBCL that is not clearly associated with sepsis syndrome is a poor prognostic factor for survival and manifests as type B lactic acidosis through the Warburg effect.

Abstract

Realistic predictions of the contribution of the uncertainty sources affecting the quality of the bathymetric measurements prior to a survey is of importance. To this end, models predicting these contributions have been developed. The objective of the present paper is to assess the performance of the bathymetric uncertainty prediction model for Phase Difference Bathymetric Sonars (PDBS) which is an interferometric sonar. Two data sets were acquired with the Bathyswath-2 system with a frequency of 234 kHz at average water depths of around 26 m and 8 m with pulse lengths equal to 0.0555 ms and 0.1581 ms, respectively. The comparison between the bathymetric uncertainties derived from the measurements and those predicted using the current model indicates a relatively good agreement except for the across-track distances close to the nadir. The performance of the prediction model can be improved by modifying the term addressing the effect of footprint shift, i.e., spatial decorrelation, on the bottom due to fact that at a given time the footprints seen by different receiving arrays are slightly different.

Abstract

The contribution of the engine and the airframe to the total noise generated by an aircraft varies with the operating conditions. Semi-empirical models are able to account for such variations but require detailed engine and airframe data as input that is not readily available for most aircraft types and operations. This hinders the validation of these models through comparison between predictions and experimental data. This work investigates the sensitivity of semi-empirical models of engine and airframe noise to slight variations of the input data, representative of uncertainties in geometrical parameters and variability of the aircraft operating conditions during flyovers. In addition, the predictions are compared to measurements of A320, A330, and B777 landings and departures. This, together with the sensitivity analysis, indicates frequency regions where a mismatch between measurements and predictions exists. The deviation between predictions and measurements for landings can be partially explained by the underestimation of the sound pressure level of the higher harmonics of the fan. For takeoff, the models predict lower levels than measured. This is hypothesized to be associated with jet-installation noise, which is not accounted for in the semi-empirical models. The predicted spectra of the Airbus A320 and A330 were adjusted to account for jet installation noise, using levels available in the literature. This resulted in a better agreement between modeled and measured spectra at low frequencies.
