This study examined the feasibility of implementing the Screening Tool for Autism in Toddlers, an interactive Level-2 screen for autism spectrum disorder, within Part C Early Intervention settings. Participants included 69 Early Intervention providers (M age = 43.3 years, 93.7% females, 92.4% Whites) from nine programs who attended a one-day Screening Tool for Autism in Toddlers training workshop. Half of the providers reported using the Screening Tool for Autism in Toddlers, and reported it to be feasible and effective. Regardless of Screening Tool for Autism in Toddlers use, providers reported increased knowledge about recognizing the early signs of autism spectrum disorder following the workshop. Provider-reported self-efficacy regarding skills related to autism spectrum disorder screening increased significantly from baseline to the 18-month follow-up. Providers also described the facilitators (e.g. promotes communication with families) and barriers (e.g. certification process), that influenced their adoption. Results highlight the potential use of the Screening Tool for Autism in Toddlers within Early Intervention settings to identify autism spectrum disorder, and suggest an implementation model in which specific providers serve as a screening "point-person," rather than expecting it to be used by all providers. Future research should aim to identify characteristics of agencies or providers that might facilitate Screening Tool for Autism in Toddlers use, as well as specific implementation plans and strategies that might promote long-term sustainability of Level-2 screening practices.

Family-centered care represents a collaborative partnership between caregivers and service providers, and is associated with positive caregiver and child outcomes. This approach may be especially important for caregivers with early concerns about autism, as service providers are often the gateway to appropriately-specialized intervention. Perceptions of family-centered care received from primary care providers (PCPs) and Part C Early Intervention (EI) providers were rated by two groups of caregivers: those concerned about autism (n = 37) and those concerned about another developmental problem (n = 22), using the Measure of Processes of Care (MPOC-20). Ratings did not differ across caregiver groups, but both groups rated EI providers significantly higher than PCPs, which may reflect systems-level differences between primary care and EI.

Objective: While sex differences in autism spectrum disorder (ASD) have been identified in areas such as neurocognitive functioning, behavior patterns, and diagnostic criteria, less work has focused on differences within females referred for ASD evaluation, including those who did not go on to receive a diagnosis. This study examined psychological and behavioral characteristics and co-occurring and differential DSM-5 diagnoses between pediatric female participants who received an ASD diagnosis (ASD+) and those who did not (ASD-). Method: Data on cognitive functioning, adaptive functioning, internalizing symptoms, externalizing symptoms, and ADOS-2 scores were analyzed among 137 3- to 20-year-old patients. The sample was divided into two age groups (ages 3–8 and ages 9–20) for analyses of between-group differences (ASD+ vs. ASD-) and predictors of group membership. Results: Females in the ASD+ group were significantly younger, had lower cognitive scores, lower internalizing and externalizing symptoms, and had higher Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule-2 (ADOS-2) scores than those in the ASD- group. ADOS-2 scores were also the only significant predictor of ASD group membership across age groups. The ASD+ group had a higher percentage of intellectual disability while the ASD- group had higher percentages of anxiety disorder, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, and disruptive behavior disorders. Conclusions: Psychological and behavioral presentations among females referred for ASD evaluation varied with age and ASD diagnostic groups. These results highlight potential female differences in ASD referrals and identification of ASD and the need to improve care for females in consideration of demographic factors. Robust findings demonstrate that parents of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) experience high levels of parenting stress that are associated with negative outcomes for families. Although the majority of research on parenting stress has focused on parents of children with an existing diagnosis, parents of young children with concerns about ASD‐related behaviors also face many unique challenges before the time of diagnosis. However, no study to date has examined patterns of parenting stress among parents of children with ASD concerns prior to a formal ASD diagnosis. Therefore, the current study investigated longitudinal trajectories of parenting stress among parents of young children with ASD concerns compared to parents of children with non‐ASD developmental concerns (e.g., language delay), and parents of children with no developmental concerns. Known predictors of parenting stress were also examined. Results from multilevel model analyses revealed that parents of children with ASD concerns experienced consistently higher levels of parenting stress across early child development compared to parents of children with non‐ASD developmental concerns and those with no concerns. Additionally, parenting efficacy, psychological functioning, social satisfaction, and child social communication behaviors predicted levels of parenting stress for all parents.
