The radioactive recombination properties of the Se-doped GaSb crystals grown by Bridgman method are investigated by cathodoluminescence (CL) microscopy and spectroscopy in the scanning microscope. CL spectra recorded under different excitation conditions suggest that this band can be attributed to a Se-related level-to-band transition.

Cathodoluminescence defect of synthetic opals infilled with Si and Pt was investigated.

Research was conducted to examine the electrically active grain boundary structure of ZnO polycrystals using a combination of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STM). Reduced surface band gaps were observed through current imaging tunneling spectroscopy at the charged boundaries imaged by SEM-based remote electron beam induced current (REBIC). REBIC contrasts in SEM and STM images are not comparable due to the different excitation conditions and signal generation volume of each method.

Research on catholuminescence shown by synthetic opals with silicon infills is examined in detail. Morphological changes are described.

Superconducting quantum interference device below room temperature and vibrating sample magnetometer at higher temperatures are used to study the magnetic transitions in single-crystal [alpha]-[Fe.sub.2][O.sub.3] (hematite) nanowires, grown by thermal oxidation of iron powder. Measurements of the magnetization as a function of temperature which showed an enhanced signal in the nanowires revealed a decrease in the antiferromagnetic coupling.

A thermal oxidation of compacted iron powder at temperatures between 700 and 900 degree Celsius is used to grow [alpha]-[Fe.sub.2][O.sub.3] (hematite) nanostructures with various morphologies. The diffusion processes have played key role in the growth mechanism and the formation of the nanostructures that induced changes in the intensity and spectral distribution of the cathodoluminescence (CL) emission.

Vanadium pentoxide nanostructures are grown on 4H-SiC and Si substrates by using a thermal deposition method without a catalyst. The cathodoluminescence (CL) emission band observed in these nanostructures is attributed to defect centers involving oxygen vacancies.

The optical properties of GaN microstructures patterned by [Ar.sup.+] ion irradiation and subsequent photo electrochemical (PEC) etching were investigated using cathodoluminescence microscopy and spectroscopy. The results show that the effects of irradiation extend to 10 (mu)m wide regions that surround the microstructures.

The electronic recombination properties of Mg-doped GaN was investigated by steady state and time-resolved cathodoluminescence (TRCL). TRCL measurement reveal different recombination kinetics for these bands and suggested that deep donors were involved in the mechanism responsible for 3.01 eV emission.

The yellow band of Si-doped GaN is studied by applying time-resolved cathodoluminescence (TRCL) and photocurrent (PC) spectroscopies. Studies confirm that different deep defect levels are involved in the observed luminescence.

Investigates the electrically active regions in YBa[sub 2]Cu[sub 3]O[sub 7-x] single crystals using remote electron beam induced current (REBIC) measurements. Discussion of enhanced REBIC contrast in terms of charged oxygen-related defects; Causes of structural inhomogeneities; Estimation of carrier diffusion length at different temperatures.

Abstract: GaInSb samples have been grown by the Vertical Bridgman technique with alternating magnetic field in order to improve mixing of the rejected InSb in the melt. Three values of the magnetic field were used 0, 2, 3mT and the solid–liquid interface demarcation during solidification has been carried out by Peltier pulse marking technique. The chemical composition of the grown samples has been checked using wavelength dispersive X-ray microanalysis technique (WDX) and particle induced X-ray emission technique (PIXE). The GaInSb samples with a nominal In concentrations of 3% and 8%, grown under alternating magnetic field, show a radial segregation almost constant along the ingot. The electromagnetic mixing effect is also observed in the profile of interface curvature and axial segregation. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Aims: To examine the use of the ambulatory surgery unit for selected incisional hernia repairs. Method: A retrospective study of incisional hernia repairs performed from 01/01/2004 to 31/12/2015. Data were collected regarding: sex, age, previous laparotomy, hernia type, complications and recurrence. Results: The total number of interventions was 1251. A total of 252 interventions (23.3%) were performed in an outpatient setting. Seven postoperative complications and 20 (8.1%) recurrences were observed. Conclusions: Incisional hernia repair can be performed in an outpatient setting, as the results of effectiveness and safety are comparable to results obtained for inpatient surgery. Background: The authors studied whether morbidly obese patients who failed in stated weight loss criteria may be considered absolute failures or relative successes., Methods: 75 morbidly obese patients underwent biliopancreatic diversion (BPD) of Larrad, with a 4/5 gastrectomy (residual gastric volume 150-200 ml), a biliopancreatic limb divided 50 cm distal to Treitz' ligament, a 50-cm common limb and an alimentary limb of nearly all the bowel length (500-600 cm). Every patient had a follow-up of 5 years. A percent excess weight loss (%EWL) < 50% was considered a "failure". We analyzed the post-surgical changes in the preoperative obesity-related problems in these patients and the causes of the weight loss failure., Results: At 5 years after the BPD of Larrad, 9 patients (12%) had a %EWL < 50%, with a mean %EWL of 36 in these patients. Most of these failed patients were cured or improved of their preoperative illnesses. The 2 males were alcoholics, and 6 of the 7 females had an abnormal psychological examination. Comparing the "failed" patients with the successful group, there is a statistically significant influence (p < 0.01) of lack of satiety, unmarried status, housewife or unemployed., Conclusion: Patients judged as a failure by weight loss criteria after bariatric surgery should not be considered absolute failures, because most of their preoperative illnesses were cured or improved, improving their quality of life. Thus, they are "relative successes".
