7. Learning to Hunt on the Go: Dietary Changes During Development of Rhinolophid Bats.

Abstract

Simple Summary: The diet of mammals changes as they grow. This study explores how the diets of three horseshoe bat species change as they grow from juveniles to adults. By analysing the DNA in their droppings, we compared the diets of juveniles and adults at two levels: the types of prey that they eat and the characteristics of their prey (size, hardness, and flying speed). We found differences between the two age groups in two out of the three species. A common pattern emerged, where younger bats tend to eat smaller, easier-to-hunt prey, suggesting that hunting skills and other factors like learning may develop differently across species. These findings have implications for conservation efforts of these bat species, particularly in recognising the distinct dietary needs of juveniles for their survival and successful development. Mammals may experience physical changes from birth, and their diet varies at different stages of life. This study investigates the impact of development on the diet composition of three horseshoe bats: Rhinolophus euryale, R. hipposideros, and R. ferrumequinum in the Basque Country, north of the Iberian Peninsula. The diets of juvenile and adult individuals of each species were obtained by analysing their droppings using metabarcoding and then compared at (1) the taxonomic and (2) prey trait levels (size, flying speed, hardness). The diets of juvenile and adult individuals of R. euryale and R. hipposideros showed significant differences at the taxonomic level and regarding prey traits. In contrast, in the case of R. ferrumequinum, we could only observe discernible diet patterns through the trait analysis. Additionally, we discovered a shared pattern: younger individuals tend to feed on easier-to-hunt and/or handle smaller and smoother prey. The varying degrees of dissimilarity between juvenile and adult diets observed in this study suggest that the relative importance of psychomotor development, foraging strategies, prey discrimination, and/or spatial learning may differ among species. Abstract

The present research was funded by the Basque Government (IT1743-22)., The present work provides new information about the distribution of the invasive bivalve Xenostrobus securis (Lamarck, 1819) in the coast of Bizkaia (Bay of Biscay), including the first report of its presence at the estuaries of Barbadun, Butroe, Oka, Lea and Artibai. The knowledge of its distribution at the estuary of Nerbioi, where the species had been previously reported, is also expanded. Field observations were contrasted by molecular identification (MiniCOI gene; Glu-5’) of several individuals collected in every estuary. Present results prove that X. securis has the potential to carry out a successful colonization of a Basque estuary, with the ability to reach a very wide distribution. Abstract

Marine hard-bottom communities are undergoing severe change under the influence of multiple drivers, notably climate change, extraction of natural resources, pollution and eutrophication, habitat degradation, and invasive species. Monitoring marine biodiversity in such habitats is, however, challenging as it typically involves expensive, non-standardized, and often destructive sampling methods that limit its scalability. Differences in monitoring approaches furthermore hinders inter-comparison among monitoring programs. Here, we announce a Marine Biodiversity Observation Network (MBON) consisting of Autonomous Reef Monitoring Structures (ARMS) with the aim to assess the status and changes in benthic fauna with genomic-based methods, notably DNA metabarcoding, in combination with image-based identifications. This article presents the results of a 30-month pilot phase in which we established an operational and geographically expansive ARMS-MBON. The network currently consists of 20 observatories distributed across European coastal waters and the polar regions, in which 134 ARMS have been deployed to date. Sampling takes place annually, either as short-term deployments during the summer or as long-term deployments starting in spring. The pilot phase was used to establish a common set of standards for field sampling, genetic analysis, data management, and legal compliance, which are presented here. We also tested the potential of ARMS for combining genetic and image-based identification methods in comparative studies of benthic diversity, as well as for detecting non-indigenous species. Results show that ARMS are suitable for monitoring hard-bottom environments as they provide genetic data that can be continuously enriched, re-analyzed, and integrated with conventional data to document benthic community composition and detect non-indigenous species. Finally, we provide guidelines to expand the network and present a sustainability plan as part of the European Marine Biological Resource Centre (www.embrc.eu). This ARMS-MBON network is funded by the infrastructure programs ASSEMBLE Plus (grant no. 730984) and the European Marine Biological Resource Centre, EMBRC. Both programs establish and maintain the core network and provide services and consultation for deployment, sample processing, sequencing, data management, and analysis. Funding for ARMS observatories in the North Sea Region was provided by the INTERREG project GEANS (North Sea Program of the European Regional Development Fund of the European Union) and the Swedish Agency for Marine and Water Management (grant no. 31812019), and the Flanders LifeWatch contribution (Research Foundation Flanders grant I000819N).
