Building on the foundations of our previous work, this paper introduces Arena 4.0, a significant advancement over Arena 3.0, Arena-Bench, Arena 1.0, and Arena 2.0. Arena 4.0 offers three key novel contributions: (1) a generative-model-based world and scenario generation approach that utilizes large language models (LLMs) and diffusion models to dynamically generate complex, human-centric environments from text prompts or 2D floorplans, useful for the development and benchmarking of social navigation strategies; (2) a comprehensive 3D model database, extendable with additional 3D assets that are semantically linked and annotated for dynamic spawning and arrangement within 3D worlds; and (3) a complete migration to ROS 2, enabling compatibility with modern hardware and enhanced functionalities for improved navigation, usability, and easier deployment on real robots. We evaluated the platform's performance through a comprehensive user study, demonstrating significant improvements in usability and efficiency compared to previous versions. Building upon our previous contributions, this paper introduces Arena 3.0, an extension of Arena-Bench, Arena 1.0, and Arena 2.0. Arena 3.0 is a comprehensive software stack containing multiple modules and simulation environments focusing on the development, simulation, and benchmarking of social navigation approaches in collaborative environments. We significantly enhance the realism of human behavior simulation by incorporating a diverse array of new social force models and interaction patterns, encompassing both human-human and human-robot dynamics. The platform provides a comprehensive set of new task modes, designed for extensive benchmarking and testing and is capable of generating realistic and human-centric environments dynamically, catering to a broad spectrum of social navigation scenarios. In addition, the platform's functionalities have been abstracted across three widely used simulators, each tailored for specific training and testing purposes. The platform's efficacy has been validated through an extensive benchmark and user evaluations of the platform by a global community of researchers and students, which noted the substantial improvement compared to previous versions and expressed interests to utilize the platform for future research and development. The consequences of natural disasters, such as earthquakes, are evident: death, coordination problems, destruction of infrastructure, and displacement of population. However, according to empirical research, the impact of a natural disaster on economic activity is mixed. Natural disasters could have significant economic effects, especially in developing economies. This is particularly important for highly seismic countries such as Chile and New Zealand. This paper contributes to the literature on natural disasters and economic development by analyzing the cases of two affected regions within these countries in the wake of major earthquakes experienced during 2010-2011: Maule (Chile) and Canterbury (New Zealand). We examine the impact of natural disasters on GDP per capita by applying the synthetic control method. Using the synthetic approach, we assess the effects of these two earthquakes by building counterfactuals to compare their recovery trajectories. We find that Chile and New Zealand experienced opposite economic effects. The Canterbury region grew 10% more in three years than its synthetic counterfactual without the earthquake, while the Maule region declined by 5%. We build synthetic controls at a regional and economic-sector level, looking at aggregated and sectoral effects. The difference in institutions, such as property rights and the large amount of government spending given for reconstruction after the New Zealand earthquake relative to Chile's, help to explain the difference in outcomes. more...

Optical readout of large scale dual-phase liquid Argon TPCs is an attractive alternative to charge readout and has been successfully demonstrated on a 2x2m active region within the CERN protoDUNE cold box. ARIADNE+ uses four Timepix3 cameras imaging the S2 light produced by 16 novel, patent pending, glass THGEMs. ARIADNE+ takes advantage of the raw Timepix3 data coming natively 3D and zero suppressed with a 1.6ns timing resolution. Three of the four THGEM quadrants implement readout in the visible light range through wavelength shifting, with the fourth featuring a VUV light intensifier, thus removing the need for wavelength shifting altogether. Characterization of diamond-like carbon (DLC) coatings at cryogenic temperatures (down to 77 K) is presented, covering the electrical resistivity range of practical interest to gaseous and liquid particle instrumentation: 10^-1-10^5 Mohm/sq. The good behaviour observed in terms of linearity, surface uniformity and stability with time and transported charge add to other well-known characteristics like low chemical reactivity and tolerance to radiation. The observed temperature dependence and stability of electrical properties with transported charge is consistent with a conductivity mechanism based on 2-dimensional variable-range electron hopping, as expected for the surface conductivity of thin films made from amorphous carbon. Neutrino interaction uncertainties are a limiting factor in current and next-generation experiments probing the fundamental physics of neutrinos, a unique window on physics beyond the Standard Model. Neutrino-nucleon scattering amplitudes are an important part of the neutrino interaction program. However, since all modern neutrino detectors are composed primarily of heavy nuclei, knowledge of elementary neutrino-nucleon amplitudes relies heavily on experiments performed in the 1970s and 1980s, whose statistical and systematic precision are insufficient for current needs. In this white paper, we outline the motivation for attempting measurements on hydrogen and deuterium that would improve this knowledge, and we discuss options for making these measurements either with the DUNE near detector or with a dedicated facility., Comment: 66 pages, 10 figures. Weakly bound, physisorbed hydrocarbons could in principle provide a similar water-repellency as obtained by chemisorption of strongly bound hydrophobic molecules at surfaces. Here we present experiments and computer simulations on the wetting behavior of water on molecularly thin, self-assembled alkane carpets of dotriacontane (n-C32H66 or C32) physisorbed on the hydrophilic native oxide layer of silicon surfaces during dip-coating from a binary alkane solution. By changing the dip-coating velocity we control the initial C32 surface coverage and achieve distinct film morphologies, encompassing homogeneous coatings with self-organised nanopatterns that range from dendritic nano-islands to stripes. These patterns exhibit a good water wettability even though the carpets are initially prepared with a high coverage of hydrophobic alkane molecules. Using in-liquid atomic force microscopy, along with molecular dynamics simulations, we trace this to a rearrangement of the alkane layers upon contact with water. This restructuring is correlated to the morphology of the C32 coatings, i.e. their fractal dimension. Water molecules displace to a large extent the first adsorbed alkane monolayer and thereby reduce the hydrophobic C32 surface coverage. We describe a feasible implementation of a novel X-ray detector for highly energetic x-ray photons with a large solid angle coverage, optimal for the detection of Compton x-ray scattered photons. The device consists of a 20~cm-thick sensitive volume filled with xenon at atmospheric pressure. When the Compton-scattered photons interact with the xenon, the released photoelectrons create clouds of secondary ionization, which are imaged using the electroluminescence produced in a custom-made multi-hole acrylic structure. Photon-by-photon counting can be achieved by processing the resulting image, taken in a continuous readout mode. Based on Geant4 simulations, by considering a realistic detector design and response, we show that photon rates up to at least $10^{11}$ ph/s on-sample ($5~{\mu}$m water-equivalent cell) can be processed, limited by the spatial diffusion of the photoelectrons in the gas. Illustratively, if making use of the Rose criterion and assuming the dose partitioning theorem, we show how such a detector would allow obtaining 3d images of $5~{\mu}$m-size unstained cells in their native environment in about 24~h, with a resolution of 36~nm. more...

A high resolution 2 m$^2$ tracking detector, based on timing Resistive Plate Chamber (tRPC) cells, has been installed at the Faculty of Physics of the University of Santiago de Compostela (Spain) in order to improve our understanding of the cosmic rays arriving at the Earth's surface. Following a short commisioning of the detector, a study of the atmospheric temperature effect of the secondary cosmic ray component was carried out. A method based on Principal Component Analysis (PCA) has been implemented in order to obtain the distribution of temperature coefficients, $W_T(h)$, using as input the measured rate of nearly vertical cosmic ray tracks, showing good agreement with the theoretical expectation. The method succesfully removes the correlation present between the different atmospheric layers, that would be dominant otherwise. We briefly describe the initial calibration and pressure correction procedures, essential to isolate the temperature effect. Overall, the measured cosmic ray rate displays the expected anticorrelation with the effective atmospheric temperature, through the coefficient $\alpha_T= -0.279 \pm 0.051 $ \%/K. With the discovery of non-zero value of $\theta_{13}$ mixing angle, the next generation of long-baseline neutrino (LBN) experiments offers the possibility of obtaining statistically significant samples of muon and electron neutrinos and anti-neutrinos with large oscillation effects. In this document we intend to highlight the importance of Near Detector facilities in LBN experiments to both constrain the systematic uncertainties affecting oscillation analyses but also to perform, thanks to their close location, measurements of broad benefit for LBN physics goals. Neutron-rich light nuclei and their reactions play an important role for the creation of chemical elements. Here, data from a Coulomb dissociation experiment on $^{20,21}$N are reported. Relativistic $^{20,21}$N ions impinged on a lead target and the Coulomb dissociation cross section was determined in a kinematically complete experiment. Using the detailed balance theorem, the $^{19}\mathrm{N}(\mathrm{n},\gamma)^{20}\mathrm{N}$ and $^{20}\mathrm{N}(\mathrm{n},\gamma)^{21}\mathrm{N}$ excitation functions and thermonuclear reaction rates have been determined. The $^{19}\mathrm{N}(\mathrm{n},\gamma)^{20}\mathrm{N}$ rate is up to a factor of 5 higher at $T<1$\,GK with respect to previous theoretical calculations, leading to a 10\,\% decrease in the predicted fluorine abundance. more...

The current state of the art in fast timing resolution for existing experiments is of the order of 100 ps on the time of arrival of both charged particles and electromagnetic showers. Current R&D on charged particle timing is approaching the level of 10 ps but is not primarily directed at sustained performance at high rates and under high radiation (as would be needed for HL-LHC pileup mitigation). We demonstrate a Micromegas based solution to reach this level of performance. The Micromegas acts as a photomultiplier coupled to a Cerenkov-radiator front window, which produces sufficient UV photons to convert the ~100 ps single-photoelectron jitter into a timing response of the order of 10-20 ps per incident charged particle. A prototype has been built in order to demonstrate this performance. We use laser-Doppler velocimetry (LDV) experiments and Reynolds-averaged Navier--Stokes (RANS) simulations to study the characteristic flow patterns downstream of a standardized clockwise swirl disturbance generator. After quantifying the impact of the mesh size, we evaluate the potential of various eddy-viscosity turbulence models in providing reasonable approximations with respect to the experimental reference. The choice of turbulent models reflects current industry practice. Our results suggest that models from the $k$-$\epsilon$ family are more accurate in predicting swirling flows than models from the $k$-$\omega$ family. For sufficiently resolved meshes, the realizable $k$-$\epsilon$ model provides the most accurate approximation of the velocity magnitudes, although it fails to capture small-scale flow structures which are accurately predicted by the standard $k$-$\epsilon$ model and the RNG $k$-$\epsilon$ model. We report the performance of a 10 atm Xenon/trimethylamine time projection chamber (TPC) for the detection of X-rays (30 keV) and gamma-rays (0.511-1.275 MeV) in conjunction with the accurate tracking of the associated electrons. When operated at such a high pressure and in 1%-admixtures, trimethylamine (TMA) endows Xenon with an extremely low electron diffusion (1.3 +-0.13 mm-sigma (longitudinal), 0.8 +-0.15 mm-sigma (transverse) along 1 m drift) besides forming a convenient Penning-Fluorescent mixture. The TPC, that houses 1.1 kg of gas in its active volume, operated continuously for 100 live-days in charge amplification mode. The readout was performed through the recently introduced microbulk Micromegas technology and the AFTER chip, providing a 3D voxelization of 8mm x 8mm x 1.2mm for approximately 10 cm/MeV-long electron tracks. This work was developed as part of the R&D program of the NEXT collaboration for future detector upgrades in the search of the 0bbnu decay in 136Xe, specifically those based on novel gas mixtures. We have recently reported the development of a new type of high-pressure Xenon time projection chamber operated with an ultra-low diffusion mixture and that simultaneously displays Penning effect and fluorescence in the near-visible region (300 nm). The concept, dubbed `Penning-Fluorescent' TPC, allows the simultaneous reconstruction of primary charge and scintillation with high topological and calorimetric fidelity. more...
