Abstract

The globus pallidus (GP) of primates is divided conventionally into distinct internal and external parts. The literature repeats since 1930 the opinion that the homolog of the primate internal pallidum in rodents is the hypothalamic entopeduncular nucleus (embedded within fiber tracts of the cerebral peduncle). To test this idea, we explored its historic fundaments, checked the development and genoarchitecture of mouse entopeduncular and pallidal neurons, and examined relevant comparative connectivity data. We found that the extratelencephalic mouse entopeduncular structure consists of four different components arrayed along a dorsoventral sequence in the alar hypothalamus. The ventral entopeduncular nucleus (EPV), with GABAergic neurons expressing Dlx5&6 and Nkx2-1, lies within the hypothalamic peduncular subparaventricular area. Three other formations-the dorsal entopeduncular nucleus (EPD), the prereticular entopeduncular nucleus (EPPRt ), and the preeminential entopeduncular nucleus (EPPEm )-lie within the overlying paraventricular area, under the subpallium. EPD contains glutamatergic neurons expressing Tbr1, Otp, and Pax6. The EPPRt has GABAergic cells expressing Isl1 and Meis2, whereas the EPPEm population expresses Foxg1 and may be glutamatergic. Genoarchitectonic observations on relevant areas of the mouse pallidal/diagonal subpallium suggest that the GP of rodents is constituted as in primates by two adjacent but molecularly and hodologically differentiable telencephalic portions (both expressing Foxg1). These and other reported data oppose the notion that the rodent extratelencephalic entopeduncular nucleus is homologous to the primate internal pallidum. We suggest instead that all mammals, including rodents, have dual subpallial GP components, whereas primates probably also have a comparable set of hypothalamic entopeduncular nuclei. Remarkably, there is close similarity in some gene expression properties of the telencephalic internal GP and the hypothalamic EPV. This apparently underlies their notable functional analogy, sharing GABAergic neurons and thalamopetal connectivity.

Abstract

We start by constructing a conformally covariant improvement of the celestial light transform which keeps track of the mixing between incoming and outgoing states under finite Lorentz transformations in $\mathbb{R}^{2,2}$. We then compute generic 2, 3 and 4-point celestial amplitudes for massless external states in the ambidextrous basis prepared by composing this $\mathrm{SL}(2,\mathbb{R})$ intertwiner with the usual celestial map between momentum and boost eigenstates. The results are non-distributional in the celestial coordinates $(z,\bar{z})$ and conformally covariant in all scattering channels. Finally, we focus on the tree level 4-gluon amplitude where we present a streamlined route to the ambidextrous correlator based on Grassmannian formulae and examine its alpha space representation. Abstract

The lateral hypothalamus (LH) has a heterogeneous cytoarchitectonic organization that has not been elucidated in detail. In this work, we analyzed within the framework of the prosomeric model the differential expression pattern of 59 molecular markers along the ventrodorsal dimension of the medial forebrain bundle in the mouse, considering basal and alar plate subregions of the LH. We found five basal (LH1-LH5) and four alar (LH6-LH9) molecularly distinct sectors of the LH with neuronal cell groups that correlate in topography with previously postulated alar and basal hypothalamic progenitor domains. Most peptidergic populations were restricted to one of these LH sectors though some may have dispersed into a neighboring sector. For instance, histaminergic Hdc-positive neurons were mostly contained within the basal LH3, Nts (neurotensin)- and Tac2 (tachykinin 2)-expressing cells lie strictly within LH4, Hcrt (hypocretin/orexin)-positive and Pmch (pro-melanin-concentrating hormone)-positive neurons appeared within separate LH5 subdivisions, Pnoc (prepronociceptin)-expressing cells were mainly restricted to LH6, and Sst (somatostatin)-positive cells were identified within the LH7 sector. The alar LH9 sector, a component of the Foxg1-positive telencephalo-opto-hypothalamic border region, selectively contained Satb2-expressing cells. Published studies of rodent LH subdivisions have not described the observed pattern. Our genoarchitectonic map should aid in systematic approaches to elucidate LH connectivity and function.

Abstract

We study the spectrum of pure massless higher spin theories in $AdS_3$. The light spectrum is given by a tower of massless particles of spin $s=2,\cdots,N$ and their multi-particles states. Their contribution to the torus partition function organises into the vacuum character of the ${\cal W}_N$ algebra. Modular invariance puts constraints on the heavy spectrum of the theory, and in particular leads to negative norm states, which would be inconsistent with unitarity. This negativity can be cured by including additional light states, below the black hole threshold but whose mass grows with the central charge. We show that these states can be interpreted as conical defects with deficit angle $2\pi(1-1/M)$. Abstract

We present here a thorough and complete analysis of mouse P0-P140 prethalamic histogenetic subdivisions and corresponding nuclear derivatives, in the context of local tract landmarks. The study used as fundamental material brains from a transgenic mouse line that expresses LacZ under the control of an intragenic enhancer of Dlx5 and Dlx6 (Dlx5/6-LacZ). Subtle shadings of LacZ signal, jointly with pan-DLX immunoreaction, and several other ancillary protein or RNA markers, including Calb2 and Nkx2.2 ISH (for the prethalamic eminence, and derivatives of the rostral zona limitans shell domain, respectively) were mapped across the prethalamus. The resulting model of the prethalamic region postulates tetrapartite rostrocaudal and dorsoventral subdivisions, as well as a tripartite radial stratification, each cell population showing a characteristic molecular profile. Some novel nuclei are proposed, and some instances of potential tangential cell migration were noted.

15. Exploring the Beliefs and Actions of New York State School Leaders as They Make Decisions for Resource Allocations Regarding the Academic Success of ELLs

Abstract

Problem: English Language Learners in New York are a special population that is difficult to serve. The regulation gives basic recommendations for what is needed for resource allocation, but there is a gap related to how leaders must make decisions to allocate resources effectively for English as a New Language (ENL) programs. The purpose of this qualitative, comparative case study was to examine the beliefs and actions of leaders in New York State districts, excluding New York City, with smaller populations of ELLs which represented less than 5% of the total district population. Districts were first selected by a purposeful sample from two districts from the average need/resource ratio category and two from the low need/resource ratio category. A snowball sample yielded 16 interviews with ELL leaders who were superintendents, district leaders who oversee ENL programs, building leaders with ELLs in their building, and teachers of ELLs. A document review protocol was followed to analyze artifacts from district mission and vision statements as well as board of education minutes/records and district websites. Using Sinek's (2011) Golden Circle Framework, four research questions were studied to examine the beliefs and actions of leaders as they make decisions for resource allocations for ENL programs. Key findings from this study included the importance of highly qualified and well-trained staff as a key resource for ENL programs; the critical considerations related to scheduling and time for ENL programs, and the vital role of analyzing short-term academic data of ELLs in driving resource decisions. Leaders believed in the importance of equity of opportunity in terms of resource allocation for ENL programs, and when equity was not present, leaders believed that advocacy was a necessary action to ensure the needs of ELLs were considered for resource allocation, especially in small ELL population districts. From this study, several important conclusions were identified. For instance, it is critical for leaders to believe in the potential of ELLs and foster an educational environment that affords ELLs equitable opportunities. The key resources necessary for implementing/maintaining a successful program for ELLs are highly qualified staff, effective schedules, material resources, and parent/community engagement. The resource effectiveness must be evaluated using regular academic data points to determine future decisions for resource allocation for ELLs. Professional development is critical for building staff capacity but was reported to be more important in average need/resource ratio districts. Leaders can benefit from utilizing Sinek's (2011) Golden Circle Framework to align their beliefs with their actions as they make and evaluate decisions for resource allocations for ENL programs. Abstract

Criminal justice stakeholders have increasingly relied on probation supervision as an alternative to incarceration and yet, probation revocations often result in incarceration. As such, increased understanding of the mechanisms behind revocations and strategies to reduce them is critical. We conduct a rapid review of the literature on factors associated with probation revocations. Specifically, we review 50 articles on how probation officer behavior, officer-client relationships, caseload size, supervision intensity, monetary sanctions, probation client characteristics, or programming and services are associated with probation revocations. Though the literature is limited, and findings are mixed, the most consistent findings indicate that officer-client relationships involving trust, support, respect, and empathy as well as reduced caseload sizes and cognitive behavioral therapy programs are associated with probation success while intensive supervision programs; greater monetary sanctions and nonpayment of those sanctions; and being Black and less educated are associated with poorer supervision outcomes. 26. The Impact of Hypopressive Abdominal Exercise on Linea Alba Morphology in Women Who Are Postpartum: A Short-Term Cross-Sectional Study

Abstract

Objective. The purpose of this study was to determine the acute effect of an abdominal hypopressive exercise (AHE) on linea alba morphology among women who are primiparous and to compare this effect with that of other common abdominal exercise modalities. Methods. A cross-sectional study of 46 women 3 months after first delivery was conducted. B-mode ultrasound imaging of the interrectus distance (IRD) and linea alba distortion was performed 2 cm below (I-point) and above (S-point) the umbilicus and at the mid-point between the umbilicus and xiphoid process (X-point). Images were recorded at rest and during an AHE performed in a supine position, a semi curl-up (SCU), an abdominal drawing-in maneuver (ADIM), and a SCU performed after an initial ADIM (ADIM+SCU). Results. The SCU exercise narrowed the IRD at the X- and S-points. Compared with SCU, AHE and ADIM widened the IRD at the S- and X-points. No significant differences were found when comparing the IRD at rest, during AHE and during ADIM, but AHE tended to narrow I-point IRD more than ADIM but to widen S-point IRD more than ADIM+SCU. No participant showed linea alba distortion during the AHE or ADIM. When compared, SCU increased the occurrence of distortion with respect to AHE and ADIM. The isolated hypopressive posture did not change the IRD or linea alba distortion. Conclusion. Among women who were postpartum, AHE seemed to narrow IRD below the umbilicus compared with ADIM without either of these 2 modalities generating linea alba distortion, as SCU or ADIM+SCU does. Thus, although no significant differences were found when comparing the IRD at rest and during AHE, the AHE could improve the tensile response of the linea alba without increasing the IRD. Impact. This is believed to be the first study to describe linea alba changes during AHE in women who are postpartum. AHE and ADIM seem to show different effects on infraumbilical IRD. The lack of distortion suggests that linea alba may undergo tensile loading at all levels. Abstract

The aim of this article is to illustrate the goals, process and results of the first stage of a European project, MentalHealth4All. Partners from 9 different European countries have worked together to design a multilingual validated repository targeted at third-country nationals with limited language proficiency (LLP TCNs) and healthcare providers, which contains resources to improve this population’s knowledge and understanding of how to access interlinguistic support in mental healthcare services in the main languages of the countries involved in the project. The present article provides a detailed overview of the assessment process of resources and its main results.

Abstract

Anxiety, negative attitudes, and attrition are all issues presented in the teaching of statistics to undergraduates in research-based degrees regardless of location. Previous works have looked at these obstacles, but none have consolidated a multilingual, multinational effort using a consistent method. Over 400 Spanish-, English-, and German-speaking undergraduate students enrolled in introductory psychology statistics courses were given the Composite Survey of Statistics Anxiety and Attitudes to determine the precursors and effects of existing problems. Results indicated that student background was heavily linked to attitudes and anxieties. The measure was supported as a viable method for more than one class or university in addressing issues in statistics education, developing interventions to improve students' experiences, and then determining the success of those changes.
