In this series of papers, we present statistical maps of mirror-mode-like (MM) structures in the magnetosheaths of Mars and Venus and calculate the probability of detecting them in spacecraft data. We aim to study and compare them with the same tools and a similar payload at both planets. We consider their dependence on extreme ultraviolet (EUV) solar flux levels (high and low) and, specific to Mars, on Mars Year (MY) as well as atmospheric seasons (four solar longitudes Ls). We first use magnetic-field-only criteria to detect these structures and present ways to mitigate ambiguities in their nature. In line with many previous studies at Earth, this technique has the advantage of using one instrument (a magnetometer) with good time resolution, facilitating comparisons between planetary and cometary environments. Applied to the magnetometer data of the Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN (MAVEN) spacecraft from November 2014 to February 2021 (MY32–MY35), we detect events closely resembling MMs lasting in total more than 170 000 s, corresponding to about 0.1 % of MAVEN's total time spent in the Martian plasma environment. We calculate MM-like occurrences normalised to the spacecraft's residence time during the course of the mission. Detection probabilities are about 1 % at most for any given controlling parameter. In general, MM-like structures appear in two main regions: one behind the shock and the other close to the induced magnetospheric boundary, as expected from theory. Detection probabilities are higher on average in low-solar-EUV conditions, whereas high-solar-EUV conditions see an increase in detections within the magnetospheric tail. We tentatively link the former tendency to two combining effects: the favouring of ion cyclotron waves the closer to perihelion due to plasma beta effects and, possibly, the non-gyrotropy of pickup ion distributions. This study is the first of two on the magnetosheaths of Mars and Venus.

Interplanetary (IP) shocks can be driven in the solar wind by fast coronal mass ejections and by the interaction of fast solar wind with slow streams of plasma. These shocks can be preceded by extended waves and suprathermal ion foreshocks. Shocks characteristics as well as the level of wave activity near them change as they propagate through the heliosphere and this can impact particle acceleration, and modify the ambient solar wind. In this work we study IP shock evolution and the wave modes upstream of them using a multispacecraft approach with data of Solar Orbiter, STEREO, Parker Solar Probe and Wind. We find that upstream regions can be permeated by whistler waves (f ~ 1 Hz) and/or ultra low frequency (ULF) right-handed waves (f~10-2–10-1 Hz). While whistlers appear to be generated at the shock, the origin of ULF waves is most probably associated with local kinetic ion instabilities. In contrast with planetary bow shocks, most IP shocks have a small Mach number (

Temperature anisotropy-driven instabilities such as the mirror mode and ion cyclotron instabilities are responsible for the generation of waves in the turbulent magnetosheath of planets. We present here a statistical study of mirror mode-like structures in the magnetosheath of Venus as observed by the Venus Express spacecraft. As in our Mars study (see poster by Simon Wedlund et al. in the same session), we use magnetic field-only measurements to constrain and identify these quasi-linear compressive structures and discuss ways to mitigate false positive detections based on one instrument only. After calculating the residence time of the spacecraft in the Venusian magnetoenvironment, we show two-dimensional statistical maps of mirror mode-like occurrence rates with respect to EUV solar flux levels, and type of bow shock (quasi-perpendicular vs quasi-parallel). We find detection probabilities of about 10% at most, with two main regions of occurrence, one behind the collisionless shock, the other close to the induced magnetospheric boundary, with the small modulation of the probability due to EUV solar flux conditions.

Applied to the magnetometer data of the Venus Express (VEX) spacecraft from May 2006 to November 2014, we detect structures closely resembling MMs lasting in total more than 93,000s, corresponding to about 0.6 % of VEX's total time spent in the Venus's plasma environment. We calculate MM-like occurrences normalised to the spacecraft's residence time during the course of the mission. Detection probabilities are about 10 % at most for any given controlling parameter. In general, MM-like structures appear in two main regions, one behind the shock, the other close to the induced magnetospheric boundary, as expected from theory. For solar maximum, the active region behind the bow shock is further inside the magneosheath, near the solar minimum bow shock location. The ratios of the observations during solar minimum and maximum are slightly dependent on the depth Δ B / B of the structures, deeper structures are more prevalent at solar maximum. A dependence on solar EUV (F10.7) flux is also present, where at higher F10.7 flux the events occur at higher values than the daily average value of the flux. Combining the plasma data from the Ion Mass Analyser with the magnetometer data shows that the instability criterion for MMs is reduced in the two main regions where the structures are measured, whereas it is still enhanced in the region in-between these two regions, implicating that the generation of MMs is transferring energy from the particles to the field. This study is the second of two on the magnetosheaths of Mars and Venus, and a third paper comparing the results obtained at the two planets will follow.

Mirror mode structures arise whenever a temperature anisotropy is present in the plasma, classically in the wake of the bow shock in a quasi-perpendicular configuration with respect to the interplanetary magnetic field, or from pickup ion distribution effects. Born from space plasma instabilities and in competition with other wave modes, these ultra-low frequency waves contribute to energy exchanges between the different plasma populations present in the magnetosheath. At Mars and Venus, such structures have very similar scales: they last typically a few tens of seconds and appear as peaks or dips in the magnetic field data in antiphase with the local plasma density variations. As magnetometers are present on many space missions, magnetic field-only criteria are an ideal tool to study these structures across different magnetosheath environments. We present here for the first time a comparison of the statistical occurrence of magnetosheath mirror mode-like structures at Mars with MAVEN and at Venus with Venus Express. Based on magnetic field-only measurements, we use identical detection criteria at both planets to select quasi-linear structures in B-field measurements. We then present two-dimensional maps of mirror mode-like occurrence rates with respect to solar cycle variations and EUV flux levels, atmospheric seasons (for Mars) and the nature of the shock crossing (quasi-parallel or quasi-perpendicular configurations), and compare them between planets. Finally, we discuss ambiguities in the nature of the detected structures and their global effects on the magnetosheath.

We present fast algorithms to automatically estimate the statistical position of the bow shock from spacecraft data, using existing analytical two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) models of the shock surface. We derive expressions of the standoff distances in 2D and 3D and of the normal to the bow shock at any given point on it. Two simple bow shock detection algorithms are constructed, one solely based on a geometrical predictor from existing models, the other using this predicted position to further refine it with the help of magnetometer data, an instrument flown on many planetary missions. Both empirical techniques are applicable to any planetary environment with a defined shock structure. Applied to the Martian environment and the NASA/MAVEN mission, the predicted shock position is on average within 0.15 planetary radius $R_p$ of the bow shock crossing. Using the predictor-corrector algorithm, this estimate is further refined to within a few minutes of the true crossing $\approx$0.05 $R_p$). Between 2014 and 2021, we detect 14,929 clear bow shock crossings, predominantly quasi-perpendicular. Thanks to 2D conic and 3D quadratic fits, we investigate the variability of the shock surface with respect to Mars Years (MY), solar longitude (Ls) and solar EUV flux levels. Although asymmetry in $Y$ and $Z$ Mars Solar Orbital coordinates is on average small, we show that for MY32 and MY35, Ls = [135-225$^\circ$] and high solar flux, it can become particularly noticeable, and is superimposed to the usual North-South asymmetry due in part to the presence of crustal magnetic fields., 55 pages, 10 figures, 5 tables

We present an in-depth analysis of a time interval when quasi-linear mirror mode structures were detected by magnetic field and plasma measurements as observed by the NASA/Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN (MAVEN) spacecraft. We employ ion and electron spectrometers in tandem to support the magnetic field measurements and confirm that the signatures are indeed mirror modes. Wedged against the magnetic pile-up boundary, the low-frequency signatures last on average $\sim$10 s with corresponding sizes of the order of 15-30 upstream solar wind proton thermal gyroradii, or 10-20 proton gyroradii in the immediate wake of the quasi-perpendicular bow shock. Their peak-to-peak amplitudes are of the order of 30-35 nT with respect to the background field, and appear as a mixture of dips and peaks, suggesting that they may have been at different stages in their evolution. Situated in a marginally stable plasma with $\beta_{||}\sim$1, we hypothesise that these so-called magnetic bottles, containing a relatively higher energy and denser ion population with respect to the background plasma, are formed upstream of the spacecraft behind the quasi-perpendicular shock. These signatures are very reminiscent of magnetic bottles found at other unmagnetised objects such as Venus and comets, also interpreted as mirror modes. Our case study constitutes the first unmistakable identification and characterisation of mirror modes at Mars from the joint points of view of magnetic field, electron and ion measurements. We study the interaction of three solar wind structures, two stream interaction regions and one interplanetary coronal mass ejection, with Mars' plasma environment during 20-27 November 2007. This period corresponds to the solar minimum between the solar cycles 23 and 24 which was characterized by very low values of the solar wind density and dynamic pressure and low IMF magnitude. During that time the Mars-Express orbit was in the terminator plane, while the Earth, Sun, and Mars were almost aligned, so we use the ACE and STEREO probes as solar wind monitors in order to identify and characterize the structures that later hit Mars. We find that the passage of these structures caused strong variations of in the bow shock location (between 2.2 and 3.0~R$_M$), compression of the magnetospheric cavity (up to 45~\%) and an increased transterminator flow below 2~R$_M$ (by a factor of $\leq$8). This study shows that during times of low solar activity, modest space weather phenomena may cause large variations of plasma flow at Mars., Comment: Published in Journal of Geophysical Research

Mirror mode (MM) structures have been evidenced everywhere in solar system plasmas, from the solar wind to Earth, Mars and Venus, as well as comets. MM waves are low-frequency long-wavelength transverse waves, usually linearly polarised and non-propagating in the plasma rest frame. In the data they commonly appear as sudden dips or peaks in the magnetic field intensity, anti-correlated with plasma density variations. They grow in a high-β plasma from an ion temperature anisotropy itself triggered by any asymmetry upstream in the solar wind flow, or typically as a result of the crossing of a quasi-perpendicular bow shock. We present here statistical maps of MM waves detected by magnetic-field-only measurements as observed by the NASA/MAVEN spacecraft and its fluxgate magnetometer MAG. Candidate detections are validated against high-cadence plasma moments given by the Solar Wind Ion Analyzer (SWIA) to yield the best set of B-field-only criteria. We examine the dependence of these MM structures on Martian Year (MY, see figure), season (solar longitude Ls) and solar activity (EUV flux). They appear to be bound by the bow shock on one side and by the magnetic pile-up boundary on the other. Occurrence probability is less than 6% on average at any time. Distribution qualitatively agrees with previous studies with a smaller data subset. The figure shows B-field-only candidate detections for MM waves at Mars, MY32 to MY35 (with ΔB/B ≥ 0.25, and the angles to the minimum/maximum variance direction ΦminV ≥ 80° and ΘmaxV ≤ 20°).

The MMS1 data for 8 months in the winter periods of 2017–2018 and 2018–2019, when MMS had its apogee in the upstream solar wind of the Earth's bow shock, are used to study Linear Magnetic Holes (LMHs). These LMHs are characterized by a magnetic depression of more than 50 % and a rotation of the background magnetic field of less then 10°. 426 LMHs are found and, based on their magnetoplasma characteristics, are split into three categories: cold (increase in density, little change in ion temperature), hot (increase in ion temperature, decrease in density) and sign change (at least one magnetic field component changes sign). The occurrence rate of LMHs is 2.3 per day. All LMHs are basically in pressure balance with the ambient plasma. Most of the linear magnetic holes are found in ambient plasmas that are stable against the mirror-mode generation, but only half of the holes are mirror-mode stable inside.

The typical picture of magnetic reconnection in the magnetosphere includes a classic Harris-type current sheet, where the current density is maximum at the magnetic equator (Bx=0). However, observations have shown that the magnetotail current sheet structure is much more complicated than this simple view. Therefore, revealing the structure of the current sheet is of importance to understand the reconnection process. Based on the four-point MMS high-resolution data, we present observations of a multiple reconnection event for which we study the structure of the current sheet as well as some of its characteristic scales. We show that the CS structure is highly dynamic during the reconnection process, changing from a bifurcated shape away from the reconnection site, to a more symmetric (Harris-type) structure near the X-line.

Ultra low-frequency wave activity such as mirror mode (MM) waves, arising from an ion temperature anisotropy in the plasma, has been ubiquitously detected in the magnetosheaths of Venus and Mars. The MM instability is usually triggered behind a quasi-perpendicular bow shock in a high plasma β. We present here a statistical survey of these waves at Mars using magnetometer and ion data from the NASA/MAVEN mission between 2014 and 2019 (solar cycle 24, receding activity). First, quasi-perpendicular bow shock crossings are identified in the data using simple bow shock models (Edberg et al. 2008, Gruesbeck et al. 2018, Hall et al. 2019). MM waves are then automatically detected for these conditions, first from magnetometer measurements only (in the manner of Volwerk et al., 2016), and second using both magnetometer and ion moments to refine the analysis. Maps of MM wave occurrence for solar cycle 24 are presented and preliminary comparisons with similar and different solar activity conditions with MGS and Mars Express data are discussed.

Earth's magnetosheath is permeated by a variety of plasma waves, nonlinear structures and ion distributions. Understanding solar wind interaction with Earth's magnetic field requires a detailed knowledge of the magnetosheath as the interface between both regions, including its kinetic micro-structure. In this work we study an extended interval (45 min) with southward magnetic field (Bz< 0) observed by MMS in the dayside magnetosheath. We use magnetic field and plasma data to study the properties of three transient enhancements in dynamic pressure identified as jets. We also calculate instability thresholds and investigate wave characteristics inside and outside of the jets. The characteristics of these jets are variable, which suggest different origins. While two of them can be classified as V-jets with large increment in velocity with almost no density increment the third one is an N-jet showing large enhancements in density with almost no velocity increment. The N-jet lasts seven times longer than the V-jets and occurs just at the region where the negative Bz becomes positive. Ion distributions inside the jets are more isotropic (Tperp ≈Tparallel) compared with the surrounding plasma where Tperp > Tparallel. FFT and minimum variance analysis show that fluctuations inside the N-jet tend to have larger transversal components, although they propagate at large angles to the background field. In contrast, waves in regions surrounding the jets are compressive and can be identified as elliptically polarized mirror mode waves. We have also show that the mirror instability threshold CM is positive inside these intervals.

We use the multi-spacecraft capabilities of the Cluster and THEMIS missions to show that two types of foreshock may be detected in spacecraft data. One is the global foreshock that appears upstream of the Earth's quasi-parallel bow-shock under steady or variable interplanetary magnetic field. Another type is a traveling foreshock that is bounded by two rotational discontinuities in the interplanetary magnetic field and propagates along the bow-shock. Foreshock compressional boundaries are found at the edges of both types of foreshock. We show that isolated foreshock cavities are a subset of the traveling foreshock that form when two bounding rotational discontinuities are so close that the ultra-low frequency waves do not develop in the region between them. We also report observations of a spontaneous hot flow anomaly inside a traveling foreshock. This means that other phenomena, such as foreshock cavitons, may also exist inside this type of foreshock. In the second part of this work we present statistical properties of phenomena related to the foreshock, namely foreshock cavities, cavitons, spontaneous hot flow anomalies and foreshock compressional boundaries. We show that spontaneous hot flow anomalies are the most depleted transient structures in terms of the B-field and plasma density inside them and that the foreshock compressional boundaries and foreshock cavities are closely related structures.

[1] Recent global hybrid simulations (kinetic ions, fluid electrons) of the solar wind interaction with Earth's magnetosphere revealed the existence of a new structure at the edges of the foreshock, named foreshock compressional boundary (FCB). The FCB is associated with a strong compression of magnetic field magnitude and density followed by strong decreases of these two quantities. This structure represents a transition region that separates the highly disturbed foreshock plasma from the solar wind. Hybrid simulations have shown that the formation and strength of the FCB depend on the generation and nonlinear evolution of ultra-low frequency (ULF) waves which in turn have been produced by the interaction of foreshock backstreaming ions with the solar wind. In this work, we use Cluster magnetic field and plasma data to show that the FCB exists and is frequently observed in the foreshock region. We study FCB properties during 36 crossings for different interplanetary field geometries and solar wind speeds. The results presented here reveal that FCBs form for different solar wind conditions (i.e., cone angle, velocity), and are highly nonlinear structures with δB/Bo and δn/no amplitudes around 40% of the ambient values. We find that the FCB is sometimes a transition region between the pristine solar wind plasma and the foreshock plasma. At other times, it separates a region with large amplitude waves from regions with high frequency small amplitude waves. Preliminary analysis of ion distributions show that in some cases the FCB can coincide with the ULF wave boundary and in others with the intermediate ion boundary. Cluster data also show that the solar wind flow is decelerated and deviated when crossing the FCB.

The terrestrial foreshock is a highly dynamic region populated by particles, waves and non-linear structures such as shocklets, SLAMS, hot flow anomalies, cavities and cavitons. Recently a new structure named foreshock compressional boundary (FCB) was reported in global hybrid simulations by Omidi et al. (2009). This structure represents a transition region that separates the highly disturbed foreshock plasma from pristine solar wind or from the region of field-aligned ion beams. The FCB is associated with a strong compression of magnetic field and density. Besides the enhancements in the field and density, the FCB also shows a region where these two quantities decrease below the ambient solar wind (SW) values. Here, we study a FCB observed by Cluster-1. This FCB shows that although sometimes FCBs are transition regions between the pristine solar wind plasma and the foreshock plasma, in this case the FCB separates a region with large amplitude waves from regions with high frequency (f∼1.7 Hz) small amplitude waves. We analyze the FCB properties, ion distributions inside them, and the waves near the structure.
