This paper sets out to examine the importance and virtues of non-musical elements in operatic performance. By identifying expressive gestures in the artistic interpretation of two famous pieces, this study also explores the prevalence of the type of information (auditory or visual) that can determine the evaluation not only of an artistic interpretation but also of an entire musical performance.

Despite the claimed worth and huge interest regarding the increasing volumes of complex data sets and the rewarding promise to improve research, there is, however, a growing concern regarding data privacy that affects both qualitative and quantitative higher education research. Within the contemporary debates on the impact of Big Data on the nature of higher education research and the effective ways to harmonize Big Data practice with privacy restrictions and regulations, this study sets out to qualitatively examine current issues regarding data privacy, anonymity, informed consent and confidentiality in data-centric higher education research, with a focus on the data collector, data subject and data user. We argue that within current regulations, data protection of research subjects concerns more data collection and disclosure and insufficiently describes use, having procedural implications for both the complex nature of higher education (HE) research and the type of research data being collected. We work our argument through an examination of several factors that call for a reconsideration of data privacy and access to private information in HE research. The conclusions indicate that Big Data-centric HE research is increasingly becoming a mainstream research paradigm which needs to address critical data privacy issues before being widely embraced.

Objective This study uses polysomnography and the Epworth sleepiness scale to assess the efficiency of the Ocluch©MAD in patients with Obstructive sleep apnea-hypopnea syndrome (OSAS), on overall respiratory disturbance indices (RDI), supine respiratory disturbance index (SRDI), minimum oxygen saturation, microarousals, CT90 (or ID90), sleep efficacy and snoring. These data are associated with skeletal class and facial biotype in order to establish predictive parameters for its effectiveness according to craniofacial morphology. Methods 22 adult patients (between 38 and 60 years of age) of both sexes (7 women, 15 men) diagnosed with OSAS in the Hospital de Carabineros de Chile (HOSCAR) Neurology Unit were recruited and given the Ocluch© MAD in the hospital's dental clinic, for its use during a three-month period. Patients were assess at the beginning and in the end of this period. Results 87.5% of patients with mild OSAS achieved the success criterion and normalization; 71.5% of patients with moderate OSAS achieved the success criterion and 33.3% achieved normalization; 85.7% of patients with severe OSAS achieved the success criterion and 57.1% achieved normalization. All class I and mesofacial patients achieved normalization, but class II patients had the greatest proportional improvement. Conclusions The Ocluch MAD is an efficient low-cost alternative that should be considered among the therapeutic arsenal for a multidisciplinary approach to treating this disease.

The overall objective of the proposed chapter is to increase the reader's understanding of the role that social media plays in self-disclosing information about ourselves in the development of friendships and identity, as well as explore these themes in a clinical context. As such, readers will gain knowledge regarding the relations between self-disclosing on social media sites and the ensuing friendship and identity development that occurs, the extension of the research findings to clinical populations, and the questions that still remain unanswered. This information may be useful for the advancement of research, policy development, mental health programs, parenting, and education.

N,N-Bis(2-chloroethyl)-p-aminophenylbutyric acid (chlorambucil, 1; 2.5 mM) was allowed to react with 2'-deoxycytidine, 2'-deoxy-5-methylcytidine, and thymidine (16.1 mM) at physiological pH (cacodylic acid, 50% base), andthe reactions were followed by HPLC and HPLC-MS technique. Although the predominant reaction observed was chlorambucil hydrolysis, 1 reacted with various heteroatoms of the nucleosides. The principal site of alkylation with all pyrimidine nucleosides was N3, as judged by 1 H NMR and HPLC-MS analyses. Also, several other adducts were detected, which could be tentatively characterized by means of HPLC-MS and MS/MS. As expected, thymidine was the least reactive pyrimidine nucleoside studied, and in addition of the N3 derivative, it reacted only at the carbohydrate moiety. Overall reactivity of cytosine nucleosides with 1 was considerably higher. The N3 adducts of dCyd and 5-MedCyd partially deaminated under the reaction conditions employed, but the reaction was not catalyzed by the participation of the ω-hydroxy function of the alkyl substituent but presumably by the nitrogen atom of the chlorambucil moiety. In the case of cytosine nucleosides, the O 2 derivatives were the second most abundant species. 5-Me-dCyd reacted more readily at O 2 than dCyd. These O 2 adducts were labile under acidic, neutral, and basic conditions. No N 4 derivatives or cross-links were detected, but dCyd reacted also at C5, although the yield of this derivative was very low. The role of chlorambucil-pyrimidine 2'-deoxyribonucleoside adducts on the cytotoxicity and mutagenity of 1 is also discussed.

4-[Bis(2-chloroethyl)amino]benzenebutanoic acid (=chlorambucil, 1; 2.5 mM) was allowed to react with single- and double-stranded calf thymus DNA at physiological pH (cacodylic acid, 50% base) at 37 degrees . The DNA-chlorambucil adducts were identified by analyzing the DNA hydrolysates by NMR, UV, HPLC, LC/ESI-MS/MS techniques as well as by spiking with authentic materials. ssDNA was more reactive than dsDNA, and the order of reactivity in ssDNA was Ade-N1>Gua-N7>Cyt-N3>Ade-N3. The most reactive site in dsDNA was Ade-N3. The Gua-N7 and Ade-N3 adducts were hydrolytically labile. Ade-N7 adduct could not be identified in the hydrolysates of ssDNA or dsDNA. The adduct Gua-N7,N7, which consists of two units of Gua bound together with a unit derived from chlorambucil, is a cross-linking adduct, and it was detected in the hydrolysates of ssDNA and dsDNA. Also several other adducts were detected which could be characterized by spiking with previously isolated authentic adducts or tentatively by MS. The role of chlorambucil-DNA adducts on the cytotoxicity and mutagenity of 1 is also discussed.

Phenylacetic acid mustard (PAM; 2), a major metabolite of the anticancer agent chlorambucil (CLB; 1), was allowed to react with 2'-deoxyadenosine (dA), 2'-deoxyguanosine (dG), 2'-deoxycytidine (dC), 2'-deoxy-5-methylcytidine (dMeC), and thymidine (T) at physiological pH (cacodylic acid, 50% base). The reactions were followed by HPLC and analyzed by HPLC/MS and/or (1)H-NMR techniques. Although the predominant reaction observed was hydrolysis of PAM, 2 also reacted with various heteroatoms of the nucleosides to give a series of products: compounds 5-31. PAM (2) was found to be hydrolytically slightly more stable than CLB (1). The principal reaction sites of 2 with dA, dG, and with all pyrimidine nucleosides were N(1), N(7), and N(3), resp. Also, several other adducts were detected and characterized. There was no significant difference in the reactivity of 1 and 2 with dG, dA or T, but the N(3) dC-PAM adduct was deaminated easier than the corresponding CLB derivative. The role of PAM-2'-deoxyribonucleoside adducts on the cytotoxic and mutagenic properties of CLB (1) is discussed.

Although the predominant reaction observed was chlorambucil hydrolysis, ca. 24% of 1 reacted with different heteroatoms of the nucleoside. As expected, the principal site of 2'-deoxyguanosine alkylation was N7. Alkylation of N7 caused spontaneous depurination, and N-(7-guaninylethyl)-N-hydroxyethyl-p-aminophenylbutyric acid (5) and the corresponding N7,N7-bis-adduct (6) were the major stable dGuo derivatives. Also several other adducts were detected and tentatively identified by means of MS/MS and UV. From them, the O(6-), N1-, N(2-), and O5'-derivatives can be biologically significant. Our results shed new light on DNA modifications caused by chlorambucil, which is an important chemotherapeutic drug and a known carcinogen.
