This chapter is a first-person account of the training, motivations, artistic considerations of 29-year-old photojournalist Diana Mara Henry who was hired by Bella Abzug and the US Department of State to be the official photographer of the National Women’s Conference in Houston, November 1977. She discusses news and editorial journalism, news photographs and photo-essays, copy-right and professional practices, and describes the process of film-based photography, and the famous politicians, celebrities and historic events that she captured in her iconic images.

This pre- and posttest multiple-case study examined the effectiveness and usability of the Sensory Processing Measure-Preschool Quick Tips (SPM-P QT) by key stakeholders (parents and teachers) for implementing data-driven intervention to address sensory processing challenges. The Sensory Processing Measure-Preschool (SPM-P) was administered as an initial test and retest to evaluate the impact of sensory processing challenges on four preschoolers both at home and at school. Following clinical reasoning, an OT faculty preceptor and OT student researchers used the SPM-P QT, a companion tool to the SPM-P, to guide the selection and implementation of sensory-based strategies by key stakeholders (parents and school staff) for 3½ months. As a follow-up to “The Sensory Processing Measure–Preschool (SPM-P)—Part One: Description of the Tool and Its Use in the Preschool Environment” (Miller Kuhaneck, Glennon, & Herzberg, 2011/this issue), this case illustrates the use of the SPM-P as a test and retest in promoting understanding of how sensory processing issues drive challenging behaviors. A father's unique perspective illustrates how the SPM-P promotes collaborative empowerment among SPM-P team members, including the occupational therapist, occupational therapy assistant, preschool teacher, paraprofessionals, grandparents. and parents.

Changes in federal legislation guiding occupational therapy practice in educational environments have required modifications in the way therapists evaluate children in these settings. New methods in turn require new tools. This article will describe one new tool designed to assist school-based practitioners in their assessment of the impact of sensory processing and praxis difficulties on educational performance. The Sensory Processing Measure is an assessment tool that promotes team collaboration by examining performance across multiple natural environments and also considers the relationship between sensory processing, praxis and social participation. Part One of this paper provides a description of the assessment tool and its proposed uses while in Part Two, examples of the use of the measure will be presented.

As a follow-up to The Sensory Processing Measure (SPM), Part One: Description and Background, this case illustrates how a student with poor peer interactions can be helped by the entire school and home team using the Sensory Processing Measure after identifying that sensory processing (praxis and sensory modulation) issues are contributing to difficulties with social participation.

OBJECTIVE. The history and development of the Sensory Processing Measure–School are detailed, and findings of initial pilot studies are reported. METHOD. Multiple reviews, focus groups, case studies, and two pilot studies were used to develop the early versions of the tool. Internal consistency and discriminatory ability were examined. RESULTS. Internal consistency measured with Cronbach’s alphas ranged from .93 to .99 in the first pilot study and .70 to .99 in the second pilot study. Children who were typically developing were correctly classified 92.3% of the time, and children with sensory issues were correctly classified 72% of the time. CONCLUSION. Initial results suggest that the tool is reliable and valid and discriminates children with and without sensory processing issues. Further research is under way with larger samples.

International audience; In the mammalian brain, the anatomical structure of neural circuits changes little during adulthood. As a result, adult learning and memory are thought to result from specific changes in synaptic strength. A possible exception is the olfactory bulb (OB), where activity guides interneuron turnover throughout adulthood. These adult-born granule cell (GC) interneurons form new GABAergic synapses that have little synaptic strength plasticity. In the face of persistent neuronal and synaptic turnover, how does the OB balance flexibility, as is required for adapting to changing sensory environments, with perceptual stability? Here we show that high dendritic spine turnover is a universal feature of GCs, regardless of their developmental origin and age. We find matching dynamics among postsynaptic sites on the principal neurons receiving the new synaptic inputs. We further demonstrate in silico that this coordinated structural plasticity is consistent with stable, yet flexible, decorrelated sensory representations. Together, our study reveals that persistent, coordinated synaptic structural plasticity between interneurons and principal neurons is a major mode of functional plasticity in the OB.
