We consider the emergence of edge states in a finite optical lattice and show that the boundaries of the lattice play a decisive role for their location in the corresponding energy spectrum. We introduce a simple parametrisation of the boundaries of the optical lattice and demonstrate the existence of an optimal choice of the values of the parameters which lead to an approximate restoration of chiral symmetry. A crucial property of this optimization is the suppression of tunneling between next-nearest neighboring wells of the lattice. This in turn allows the mapping of the optical lattice set-up to a finite SSH model. The topological character of the emerging edge states is discussed., Comment: 10 pages, 11 figures

We report on a direct mapping of acoustic slender waveguides to the one dimensional trimer Su- Schrieffer-Heeger model, with neither chiral nor mirror symmetry. Importantly, we can choose to perform this mapping for either the acoustic velocity or pressure. We demonstrate that, for finite systems, this choice is necessarily linked to the boundary conditions. It allows for the unveiling of the edge states of the acoustic system through an edge state phase diagram. An experimental realization of our setup in the audible regime corroborates our theoretical predictions.

We consider the non-Hermitian, parity-time (PT) symmetric extensions of the one-dimensional Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model in the topological non-trivial configuration. We study the properties of the topologically protected edge states, and develop an effective two-state analytical description of the system that accurately predicts the PT-symmetry breaking point for the edge states. We develop a mapping between the factorial moments of the second order $F_2$ and the correlation integral $C$. We formulate a fast computation technique for the evaluation of both, which is more efficient, compared to conventional methods, for data containing number of pairs per event which is lower than the estimation points. We find the effectiveness of the technique to be more prominent as the dimension of the embedding space increases. We are able to analyse large amount of data in short computation time and access very low scales in $C$ or extremely high partitions in $F_2$. The concept of the generalized continuity equation (GCE) was recently introduced in [J. Phys. A: Math. and Theor. {\bf 52}, 1552034 (2019)], and was derived in the context of $N$ independent Schr\"{o}dinger systems. The GCE is induced by a symmetry transformation which mixes the states of these systems, even though the $N$-system Lagrangian does not. As the $N$-system Schr\"{o}dinger Lagrangian is not invariant under such a transformation, the GCE will involve source terms which, under certain conditions vanish and lead to conserved currents. These conditions may hold globally or locally in a finite domain, leading to globally or locally conserved currents, respectively. In this work, we extend this idea to the case of arbitrary $SU(N)$-transformations and we show that a similar GCE emerges for $N$ systems in the Dirac dynamics framework. The emerging GCEs and the conditions which lead to the attendant conservation laws provide a rich phenomenology and potential use for the preparation and control of fermionic states., Comment: 10 pages, 2 figures, 1 table

Degeneracies in the energy spectra of physical systems are commonly considered to be either of accidental character or induced by symmetries of the Hamiltonian. We develop an approach to explain degeneracies by tracing them back to symmetries of an isospectral effective Hamiltonian derived by subsystem partitioning. We provide an intuitive interpretation of such latent symmetries by relating them to corresponding local symmetries in the powers of the underlying Hamiltonian matrix. As an application, we relate the degeneracies induced by the rotation symmetry of a real Hamiltonian to a non-abelian latent symmetry group. It is demonstrated that the rotational symmetries can be broken in a controlled manner while maintaining the underlying more fundamental latent symmetry. We propose a fast and robust quantum state transfer protocol employing a Su-Schrieffer-Heeger chain, where the interchain couplings vary in time. Based on simple considerations around the terms involved in the definition of the adiabatic invariant, we construct an exponential time-driving function that successfully takes advantage of resonant effects to speed up the transfer process. Using optimal control theory, we confirm that the proposed time-driving function is close to optimal. To unravel the crucial aspects of our construction, we proceed to a comparison with two other protocols. One where the underlying Su-Schrieffer-Heeger chain is adiabatically time-driven and another where the underlying chain is topologically trivial and resonant effects are at work. By numerically investigating the resilience of each protocol to static noise, we highlight the robustness of the exponential driving.

We show that it is possible to successfully, rapidly and robustly transfer a topological vibrational edge mode across a time-varying mechanical chain. The stiffness values of the springs of the chain are arranged in an alternating staggered way, such that we obtain a mechanical analog of the quantum Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model which exhibits a non trivial topological phase. Using optimal control methods, we are able to design control schemes for driving the stiffness parameters, such that the transfer is done with high fidelity, speed and robustness against disorder as well as energy amplification of the target edge mode., Comment: 10 pages, 9 figures

We present an algorithm to design networks that feature pretty good state transfer (PGST), which is of interest for high-fidelity transfer of information in quantum computing. Realizations of PGST networks have so far mostly relied either on very special network geometries or imposed conditions such as transcendental on-site potentials. However, it was recently shown [Eisenberg et al., arXiv:1804.01645] that PGST generally arises when a network's eigenvectors and the factors $P_{\pm}$ of its characteristic polynomial $P$ fulfill certain conditions, where $P_{\pm}$ correspond to eigenvectors which have $\pm 1$ parity on the input and target sites. We combine this result with the so-called isospectral reduction of a network to obtain $P_{\pm}$ from a dimensionally reduced form of the Hamiltonian. Equipped with the knowledge of the factors $P_{\pm}$, we show how a variety of setups can be equipped with PGST by proper tuning of $P_{\pm}$. Having demonstrated a method of designing networks featuring pretty good state transfer of single site excitations, we further show how the obtained networks can be manipulated such that they allow for robust storage of qubits. We hereby rely on the concept of compact localized states, which are eigenstates of a Hamiltonian localized on a small subdomain, and whose amplitudes completely vanish outside of this domain. Such states are natural candidates for the storage of quantum information, and we show how certain Hamiltonians featuring pretty good state transfer of single site excitation can be equipped with compact localized states such that their transfer is made possible., Comment: 19 pages, 9 figures

We develop a description of the equation of state of QCD matter with restored chiral symmetry, which is in thermal and chemical equilibrium with the hadronic phase. The hadron gas is described with thermodynamically consistent volume corrections. The chiral phase is composed of a set of few quark condensates, each of which corresponds to a family of hadrons with specific quark content. On the boundary between the two phases we apply the requirement of conservation of particle numbers per family. We use lattice calculations for temperatures below the transition curve to determine hadronic volumes. We find that the pion system plays decisive role in the shift of the transition from higher order (crossover) to first order. For four volume models we calculate the location of the critical point as function of critical temperature $T_c$ at vanishing baryon density. Particularly, if we additionally impose the equality between the densities of quarks contained in mesons and baryons, we find a critical point residing in the interval of baryon chemical potential $\mu_B \simeq$ 233-267 MeV and of temperature $T \simeq$ 153-158 MeV., Comment: 50 pages, 22 figures. We consider the perfect transfer of a state between arbitrary nodes of one-dimensional spin-1/2 chain with optimally engineered couplings. Motivated by the fact that such a system could be used as a data bus for connecting multiple quantum processors, we derive two necessary and sufficient conditions that have to be met in order to perfectly transfer a state between any two nodes and we employ them to examine both open and closed geometries. Analytical calculations and numerical optimizations are performed for both cases in order to determine the reachability of certain target states and to provide optimal values for the couplings which ensure perfect fidelity. An important finding is that even-sized closed chains allow for perfect transfer between any pair of sites and therefore are a promising platform for the implementation of data bus protocols., Comment: 7 pages, 2 figures

We propose modulation protocols designed to generate, store and transfer compact localized states in a quantum network. Induced by parameter tuning or local reflection symmetries, such states vanish outside selected domains of the complete system and are therefore ideal for information storage. Their creation and transfer is here achieved either via amplitude phase flips or via optimal temporal control of inter-site couplings. We apply the concept to a decorated, locally symmetric Lieb lattice where one sublattice is dimerized, and also demonstrate it for more complex setups. The approach allows for a flexible storage and transfer of states along independent paths in lattices supporting flat energetic bands. The generic network and protocols proposed can be utilized in various physical setups such as atomic or molecular spin lattices, photonic waveguide arrays, and acoustic setups.

We investigate the spectral properties of a class of hard-wall bounded systems, described by potentials exhibiting domain-wise different local symmetries. Tuning the distance of the domains with locally symmetric potential from the hard wall boundaries leads to extrema of the eigenenergies. The underlying wavefunction becomes then an eigenstate of the local symmetry transform in each of the domains of local symmetry. These extrema accumulate towards eigenenergies which do not depend on the position of the potentials inside the walls. They correspond to perfect transmission resonances of the associated scattering setup, obtained by removing the hard walls. We argue that this property characterizes the duality between scattering and bounded systems in the presence of local symmetries. The impact of local reflection symmetry on wave localization and transport within finite disordered chains is investigated. Local symmetries thereby play the role of a spatial correlation of variable range in the finite system. We find that, on ensemble average, the chain eigenstates become more fragmented spatially for intermediate average symmetry domain sizes, depending on the degree of disorder. This is caused by the partial formation of states with approximate local parity confined within fictitious, disorder-induced double wells and perturbed by the coupling to adjacent domains. The dynamical evolution of wave-packets shows that the average site-resolved transfer efficiency is enhanced between regions connected by local symmetry. The transfer may further be drastically amplified in the presence of spatial overlap between the symmetry domains, and in particular when global and local symmetry coexist. We employ the recently introduced Geometric Phase Propagator Approach (GPPA) [Phys. Rev. A85, 062110 (2012)] to develop an improved perturbative scheme for the calculation of life times in driven quantum systems. This incorporates a resummation of the contributions of virtual processes starting and ending at the same state in the considered time interval. The proposed procedure allows for a strict determination of the conditions leading to finite life times in a general driven quantum system by isolating the resummed terms in the perturbative expansion contributing to their generation. To illustrate how the derived conditions apply in practice, we consider the effect of driving in a system with purely discrete energy spectrum, as well as in a system for which the eigenvalue spectrum contains a continuous part. We show that in the first case, when the driving contains a dense set of frequencies acting as a noise to the system, the corresponding bound states acquire a finite life time. When the energy spectrum contains also a continuum set of eigenvalues then the bound states, due to the driving, couple to the continuum and become quasi-bound resonances. The benchmark of this change is the appearance of a Fano-type peak in the associated transmission profile. Considering the 3d Ising universality class of the QCD critical endpoint we use a universal effective action for the description of the baryon-number density fluctuations around the critical region. Calculating the baryon-number multiplicity moments and determining their scaling with system's size we show that the critical region is very narrow in the direction of the baryon chemical potential $\mu$ and wide in the temperature direction $T$ for $T > T_c$. In this context, published experimental results on local proton density-fluctuation measurements obtained by intermittency analysis in transverse momentum space in NA49 central A+A collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=17.2$ GeV (A=C,Si,Pb), restrict significantly the location $(\mu_c,T_c)$ of the QCD critical endpoint. The main constraint is provided by the freeze-out chemical potential of the Si+Si system, which shows non-conventional baryon density fluctuations, restricting $(\mu_c,T_c)$ within a narrow domain, $119~\textrm{MeV} \leq T_c \leq 162~\textrm{MeV}$, $252~\textrm{MeV} \leq \mu_c \leq 258~\textrm{MeV}$, of the phase diagram., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures

We show that, at the critical temperature, there is a class of Lee-Yang zeros of the partition function in a general scalar field theory, which location scales with the size of the system with a characteristic exponent expressed in terms of the isothermal critical exponent $\delta$. In the thermodynamic limit the zeros belonging to this class condense to the critical point {\zeta}=1 on the real axis in the complex fugacity plane while the complementary set of zeros (with Re {\zeta} < 1) covers uniformly the unit circle. Although the aforementioned class degenerates to a single point for an infinite system, when the size is finite it dominates in the partition function and determines the self-similar structure (fractal geometry, scaling laws) of the critical system. This property opens up the perspective to formulate finite-size scaling theory in effective QCD, near the chiral critical point, in terms of the location of Lee-Yang zeros., Comment: 6 pages,4 figures

We are considering the time-dependent transport through a discrete system, consiting of a quantum dot T-coupled to an infinite tight-binding chain. The periodic driving that is induced on the coupling between the dot and the chain, leads to the emergence of a characteristic multiple Fano resonant profile in the transmission spectrum. We focus on investigating the underlying physical mechanisms that give rise to the quantum resonances. To this end, we use Floquet theory for calculating the transmission spectrum and in addition employ the Geometric Phase Propagator (GPP) approach [Ann. Phys. 375, 351 (2016)] to calculate the transition amplitudes of the time-resolved virtual processes, in terms of which we describe the resonant behavior. This two fold approach, allows us to give a rigorous definition of a quantum resonance in the context of driven systems and explains the emergence of the characteristic Fano profile in the transmission spectrum., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures

In the dynamics of the QCD critical point, the net-baryon fluid, linked to the slow component of the order parameter, relaxes to a 3d Ising system in equilibrium. An analytical study of shear and bulk viscosity, with constraints imposed by the dynamics of the critical net-baryon fluid, the universality property and the requirements of a class of strong coupling theories, is performed in the neighbourhood of the critical point. It is found that the shear viscosity of the net-baryon fluid is restricted in the domain $1.6\leq 4\pi\frac{\eta}{s}\leq 3.7$ for $T_c < T \leq 2T_c$ whereas the bulk viscosity is small, $4\pi\frac{\zeta}{s} < 0.05$ (for $T>1.27 T_c$) but rising towards the singularity at $T=T_c$., Comment: 13 pages, 2 figures

A recursive scheme for the design of scatterers acting simultaneously as emitters and absorbers, such as lasers and coherent perfect absorbers in optics, at multiple prescribed frequencies is proposed. The approach is based on the assembly of non-Hermitian emitter and absorber units into self-dual emitter-absorber trimers at different composition levels, exploiting the simple structure of the corresponding transfer matrices. In particular, lifting the restriction to parity-time-symmetric setups enables the realization of emitter and absorber action at distinct frequencies and provides flexibility in the choice of realistic parameters. We further show how the same assembled scatterers can be rearranged to produce unidirectional and bidirectional transparency at the selected frequencies. With the design procedure being generically applicable to wave scattering in single-channel settings, we demonstrate it with concrete examples of photonic multilayer setups., Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures

We develop a formalism relating nonlocal current continuity to spatial symmetries of subparts in discrete Schr\"odinger systems. Breaking of such local symmetries hereby generates sources or sinks for the associated nonlocal currents. The framework is applied to locally inversion-(time-) and translation-(time-) symmetric one-dimensional photonic waveguide arrays with Hermitian or non-Hermitian effective tight-binding Hamiltonians. For stationary states the nonlocal currents become translationally invariant within symmetric domains, exposing different types of local symmetry. They are further employed to derive a mapping between wave amplitudes of symmetry-related sites, generalizing also the global Bloch and parity mapping to local symmetry in discrete systems. In scattering setups, perfectly transmitting states are characterized by aligned invariant currents in attached symmetry domains, whose vanishing signifies a correspondingly symmetric density. For periodically driven arrays, the invariance of the nonlocal currents is retained on period average for quasi-energy eigenstates. The experimental search for the location of the QCD critical point in the phase diagram is of primary importance. In a recent publication it is claimed that measurements at RHIC lead not only to the location of the critical point ($\mu_{cep}=95$ MeV, $T_{cep}=165$ MeV) but also to the verification of its universality class ($3d$ Ising system) by extracting the values of the critical exponents ($\gamma=1.2$, $\nu=0.66$). We argue that this claim is based on an erroneous treatment of scaling relations near the critical point. As a result, the correct interpretation of the measurements cannot be linked to the QCD critical point.

We investigate Non-Linear Plane-Wave solutions of the classical Minkowskian Yang-Mills (YM) equations of motion. By imposing a suitable ansatz which solves Gauss' law for the $SU(3)$ theory, we derive solutions which consist of Jacobi elliptic functions depending on an enumerable set of elliptic modulus values. The solutions represent periodic anharmonic plane waves which possess arbitrary non-zero mass and are exact extrema of the non-linear YM action. Among them, a unique harmonic plane wave with a non-trivial pattern in phase, spin and color is identified. Similar solutions are present in the $SU(4)$ case while are absent from the $SU(2)$ theory., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures

We propose a method for calculating the isothermal critical exponent $\delta$ in Ising systems undergoing a second-order phase transition. It is based on the calculation of the mean magnetization time series within a small connected domain of a lattice after equilibrium is reached. At the pseudocritical point, the magnetization time series attains intermittent characteristics and the probability density for consecutive values of mean magnetization within a region around zero becomes a power law. Typically the size of this region is of the order of the standard deviation of the magnetization. The emerging power-law exponent is directly related to the isothermal critical exponent $\delta$ through a simple analytical expression. We employ this method to calculate with remarkable accuracy the exponent $\delta$ for the square-lattice Ising model where traditional approaches, like the constrained effective potential, typically fail to provide accurate results., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

We consider a periodic waveguide array whose unit cell consists of a $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric quadrimer with two competing loss/gain parameter pairs which lead to qualitatively different symmetry-broken phases. It is shown that the transitions between the phases are described by a symmetry-adapted nonlocal current which maps the spectral properties to the spatially resolved field, for the lattice as well as for the isolated quadrimer. Its site-average acts like a natural order parameter for the general class of one-dimensional $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric Hamiltonians, vanishing in the unbroken phase and being nonzero in the broken phase. We investigate how the beam dynamics in the array is affected by the presence of competing loss/gain rates in the unit cell, showing that the enriched band structure yields the possibility to control the propagation length before divergence when the system resides in the broken $\mathcal{PT}$ phase., Comment: 8 pages,6 figures

We introduce a class of non-local Lagrangians which allow for the variational derivation of non-local conser- vation laws in a self-consistent manner. The formalism developed here generalizes previous approaches, used in the context of $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetric quantum mechanics and optics in the paraxial approximation in a twofold way: firstly it is valid for a larger set of linear symmetry transforms and secondly it enables the derivation of additional non-local conservation laws for general higher dimensional wave mechanical systems., Comment: The paper has been withdrawn due to incomplete formalism. We study the classical dynamics of the Abelian Higgs model employing an asymptotic multiscale expansion method, which uses the ratio of the Higgs to the gauge field amplitudes as a small parameter. We derive an effective nonlinear Schr\"{o}dinger equation for the gauge field, and a linear equation for the scalar field containing the gauge field as a nonlinear source. This equation is used to predict the existence of oscillons and oscillating kinks for certain regimes of the ratio of the Higgs to the gauge field masses. Results of numerical simulations are found to be in very good agreement with the analytical findings, and show that the oscillons are robust, while kinks are unstable. It is also demonstrated that oscillons emerge spontaneously as a result of the onset of the modulational instability of plane wave solutions of the model. A theory for wave mechanical systems with local inversion and translation symmetries is developed employing the two-dimensional solution space of the stationary Schr\"odinger equation. The local symmetries of the potential are encoded into corresponding local basis vectors in terms of symmetry-induced two-point invariant currents which map the basis amplitudes between symmetry-related points. A universal wavefunction structure in locally symmetric potentials is revealed, independently of the physical boundary conditions, by using special local bases which are adapted to the existing local symmetries. The local symmetry bases enable efficient computation of spatially resolved wave amplitudes in systems with arbitrary combinations of local inversion and translation symmetries. We implement the concept of complete local symmetry in lossy acoustic waveguides. Despite the presence of losses, the existence of a spatially invariant current is shown theoretically and observed experimentally. We demonstrate how this invariant current leads to the generalization of the Bloch and parity theorems for lossy systems defining a mapping of the pressure field between symmetry related spatial domains. Using experimental data we verify this mapping with remarkable accuracy. For the performed experiment we employ a construction technique based on local symmetries which allows the design of setups with prescribed perfect transmission resonances in the lossless case. Our results reveal the fundamental role of symmetries in restricted spatial domains and clearly indicate that completely locally symmetric devices constitute a promising class of setups, regarding the manipulation of wave propagation., Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures

We propose a quasi-particle model for the thermodynamic description of the gluon plasma which takes into account non-abelian characteristics of the gluonic field. This is accomplished utilizing massive non-linear plane wave solutions of the classical equations of motion with a variable mass parameter, reflecting the scale invariance of the Yang-Mills Lagrangian. For the statistical description of the gluon plasma we interpret these non-linear waves as quasi-particles with a temperature dependent mass distribution. Quasi-Gaussian distributions with a common variance but different temperature dependent mean masses for the longitudinal and transverse modes are employed. We use recent Lattice results to fix the mean transverse and longitudinal masses while the variance is fitted to the equation of state of pure $SU(3)$ on the Lattice. Thus, our model succeeds to obtain both a consistent description of the gluon plasma energy density as well as a correct behaviour of the mass parameters near the critical point., Comment: 7 pages, 2 figures

We study the effect of discrete symmetry breaking in inhomogeneous scattering media within the framework of generic wave propagation. Our focus is on one-dimensional scattering potentials exhibiting local symmetries. We find a class of spatially invariant nonlocal currents, emerging when the corresponding generalized potential exhibits symmetries in arbitrary spatial domains. These invariants characterize the wave propagation and provide a spatial mapping of the wave function between any symmetry related domains. This generalizes the Bloch and parity theorems for broken reflection and translational symmetries, respectively. Their nonvanishing values indicate the symmetry breaking, whereas a zero value denotes the restoration of the global symmetry where the well-known forms of the two theorems are recovered. These invariants allow for a systematic treatment of systems with any local symmetry combination, providing a tool for the investigation of the scattering properties of aperiodic but locally symmetric systems. To this aim we express the transfer matrix of a locally symmetric potential unit via the corresponding invariants and derive quantities characterizing the complete scattering device which serve as key elements for the investigation of transmission spectra and particularly of perfect transmission resonances., Comment: 29 pages, 6 figures

Recently [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 106}, 093902 (2011)] it has been shown that $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric scattering systems with balanced gain and loss, undergo a transition from $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric scattering eigenstates, which are norm preserving, to symmetry broken pairs of eigenstates exhibiting net amplification and loss. In the present work we derive the existence of an invariant non-local current which can be directly associated with the observed transition playing the role of an "order parameter". The use of this current for the description of the $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetry breaking allows the extension of the known phase diagram to higher dimensions incorporating scattering states which are not eigenstates of the scattering matrix., Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures

We study the classical dynamics of the Abelian-Higgs model in (1+1) space-time dimensions bf for the case of strongly broken gauge symmetry. In this limit the wells of the potential are almost harmonic and sufficiently deep, presenting a scenario far from the associated critical point. Using a multiscale perturbation expansion, the equations of motion for the fields are reduced to a system of coupled nonlinear Schrodinger equations (CNLS). Exact solutions of the latter are used to obtain approximate analytical solutions for the full dynamics of both the gauge and Higgs field in the form of oscillons and oscillating kinks. Numerical simulations of the exact dynamics verify the validity of these solutions. We explore their persistence for a wide range of the model's single parameter which is the ratio of the Higgs mass to the gauge field mass . We show that only oscillons oscillating symmetrically with respect to the "classical vacuum", for both the gauge and the Higgs field, are long lived. Furthermore plane waves and oscillating kinks are shown to decay into oscillon- like patterns, due to the modulation instability mechanism., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures

The parity and Bloch theorems are generalized to the case of broken global symmetry. Local inversion or translation symmetries are shown to yield invariant currents that characterize wave propagation. These currents map the wave function from an arbitrary spatial domain to any symmetry-related domain. Our approach addresses any combination of local symmetries, thus applying in particular to acoustic, optical and matter waves. Nonvanishing values of the invariant currents provide a systematic pathway to the breaking of discrete global symmetries.

We develop a classification of perfectly transmitting resonances occuring in effectively one-dimensional optical media which are decomposable into locally reflection symmetric parts. The local symmetries of the medium are shown to yield piecewise translation-invariant quantities, which are used to distinguish resonances with arbitrary field profile from resonances following the medium symmetries. Focusing on light scattering in aperiodic multilayer structures, we demonstrate this classification for representative setups, providing insight into the origin of perfect transmission. We further show how local symmetries can be utilized for the design of optical devices with perfect transmission at prescribed energies. Providing a link between resonant scattering and local symmetries of the underlying medium, the proposed approach may contribute to the understanding of optical response in complex systems., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures

In the present work, we consider the problem of a system of few vortices $N \leq 5$ as it emerges from its experimental realization in the field of atomic Bose-Einstein condensates. Starting from the corresponding equations of motion, we use a two-pronged approach in order to reveal the configuration space of the system's preferred dynamical states. On the one hand, we use a Monte-Carlo method parametrizing the vortex "particles" by means of hyperspherical coordinates and identifying the minimal energy ground states thereof for $N=2, ..., 5$ and different vortex particle angular momenta. We then complement this picture with a dynamical systems analysis of the possible rigidly rotating states. The latter reveals all the supercritical and subcritical pitchfork, as well as saddle-center bifurcations that arise exposing the full wealth of the problem even at such low dimensional cases. By corroborating the results of the two methods, it becomes fairly transparent which branch the Monte-Carlo approach selects for different values of the angular momentum which is used as a bifurcation parameter., Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures. A unifying description of lattice potentials generated by aperiodic one-dimensional sequences is proposed in terms of their local reflection or parity symmetry properties. We demonstrate that the ranges and axes of local reflection symmetry possess characteristic distributional and dynamical properties which can be determined for every aperiodic binary lattice. A striking aspect of such a property is given by the return maps of sequential spacings of local symmetry axes, which typically traverse few-point symmetry orbits. This local symmetry dynamics allows for a classification of inherently different aperiodic lattices according to fundamental symmetry principles. Illustrating the local symmetry distributional and dynamical properties for several representative binary lattices, we further show that the renormalized axis spacing sequences follow precisely the particular type of underlying aperiodic order. Our analysis thus reveals that the long-range order of aperiodic lattices is characterized in a compellingly simple way by its local symmetry dynamics., Comment: 15 pages, 12 figures

We investigate the classical dynamics of the massive SU(2) Yang-Mills field in the framework of multiple scale perturbation theory. We show analytically that there exists a subset of solutions having the form of a kink soliton, modulated by a plane wave, in a linear subspace transverse to the direction of free propagation. Subsequently, we explore how these solutions affect the dynamics of a Dirac field possessing an SU(2) charge. We find that this class of Yang-Mills configurations, when regarded as an external field, leads to the localization of the fermion along a line in the transverse space. Our analysis reveals a mechanism for trapping SU(2) charged fermions in the presence of an external Yang-Mills field indicating the non-abelian analogue of Landau localization in electrodynamics., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures

We study the classical dynamics of the Abelian Higgs model employing an asymptotic multiscale expansion method, which uses the ratio of the Higgs to the gauge field amplitudes as a small parameter. We derive an effective nonlinear Schrodinger equation for the gauge field, and a linear equation for the scalar field containing the gauge field as a nonlinear source. This equation is used to predict the existence of oscillons and oscillating kinks for certain regimes of the ratio of the Higgs to the gauge field masses. Results of direct numerical simulations are found to be in very good agreement with the analytical findings, and show that the oscillons are robust, while kinks are unstable. It is also demonstrated that oscillons emerge spontaneously as a result of the onset of the modulational instability of plane wave solutions of the model. We look for fluctuations expected for the QCD critical point using an intermittency analysis in the transverse momentum phase space of protons produced around midrapidity in the 12.5\% most central C+C, Si+Si and Pb+Pb collisions at the maximum SPS energy of 158$A$~GeV. We find evidence of power-law fluctuations for the Si+Si data. The fitted power-law exponent $\phi_{2} = 0.96^{+0.38}_{-0.25}\text{ (stat.)}$ $\pm 0.16\text{ (syst.)}$ is consistent with the va\-lue expected for critical fluctuations. Power-law fluctuations had previously also been observed in low-mass $\pi^+ \pi^-$ pairs in the same Si+Si collisions., Comment: 16 pages, 7 figures

Employing Monte-Carlo simulation techniques we investigate the statistical properties of equally charged particles confined in a one-dimensional box trap and detect a crossover from a crystalline to a cluster phase with increasing temperature. The corresponding transition temperature depends separately on the number of particles N and the box size L, implying non-extensivity due to the long-range character of the interactions. The probability density of the spacing between the particles exhibits at low temperatures an accumulation of discrete peaks with an overall asymmetric shape. In the vicinity of the transition temperature it is of a Gaussian form whereas in the high temperature regime an exponential decay is observed. The high temperature behaviour shows a cluster phase with a mean cluster size that first increases with the temperature and then saturates. The crossover is clearly identifiable also in the non-linear behaviour of the heat capacity with varying temperature. The influence of the trapping potential on the observed results as well as possible experimental realizations are briefly addressed., Comment: 12 pages, 13 figures

We introduce the concept of parity symmetry in restricted spatial domains -- local parity -- and explore its impact on the stationary transport properties of generic, one-dimensional aperiodic potentials of compact support. It is shown that, in each domain of local parity symmetry of the potential, there exists an invariant quantity in the form of a non-local current, in addition to the globally invariant probability current. For symmetrically incoming states, both invariant currents vanish if weak commutation of the total local parity operator with the Hamiltonian is established, leading to local parity eigenstates. For asymmetrically incoming states which resonate within locally symmetric potential units, the complete local parity symmetry of the probability density is shown to be necessary and sufficient for the occurrence of perfect transmission. We connect the presence of local parity symmetries on different spatial scales to the occurrence of multiple perfectly transmitting resonances and propose a construction scheme for the design of resonant transparent aperiodic potentials. A semi-analytical approach to atomic waveguide scattering for harmonic confinement is developed taking into account all partial waves. As a consequence $\ell$-wave confinement-induced resonances are formed being coupled to each other due to the confinement. The corresponding resonance condition is obtained analytically using the $K$-matrix formalism. Atomic scattering is described by transition diagrams which depict all relevant processes the atoms undergo during the collision. We study the classical dynamics of SU(2)-Higgs field theory using multiple scale perturbation theory. In the spontaneously broken phase, assuming small perturbations of the Higgs field around its vacuum expectation value, we derive a nonlinear Schroedinger equation and study the stability of its nonlinear plane wave solutions. The latter, turn out to be stable only if the Higgs amplitude is an order of magnitude smaller than that of the gauge field. We study a discrete nonlinear Schr\"odinger lattice with a parabolic trapping potential. The model, describing, e.g., an array of repulsive Bose-Einstein condensate droplets confined in the wells of an optical lattice, is analytically and numerically investigated. Starting from the linear limit of the problem, we use global bifurcation theory to rigorously prove that - in the discrete regime - all linear states lead to nonlinear generalizations thereof, which assume the form of a chain of discrete dark solitons (as the density increases). The stability of the ensuing nonlinear states is studied and it is found that the ground state is stable, while the excited states feature a chain of stability/instability bands. We illustrate the mechanisms under which discreteness destabilizes the dark-soliton configurations, which become stable only inside the continuum regime. Continuation from the anti-continuum limit is also considered, and a rich bifurcation structure is revealed., Comment: 17 pages, 9 figures

We analyze the quantum dynamics of the time-dependent elliptical billiard using the example of a certain breathing mode. A numerical method for the time-propagation of an arbitrary initial state is developed, based on a series of transformations thereby removing the time-dependence of the boundary conditions. The time-evolution of the energies of different initial states is studied. The maximal and minimal energy that is reached during the time-evolution shows a series of resonances as a function of the applied driving frequency. At these resonances, higher (or lower) lying states are periodically populated, leading to the observed change in energy. The resonances occur when the driving frequency or a multiple of it matches exactly the mean energetic difference between the two involved states. This picture is confirmed by a few-level Rabi-like model with periodic couplings, reproducing the key results of our numerical study.

The standard description of Fermi acceleration, developing in a class of time-dependent billiards, is given in terms of a diffusion process taking place in momentum space. Within this framework the evolution of the probability density function (PDF) of the magnitude of particle velocities as a function of the number of collisions $n$ is determined by the Fokker-Planck equation (FPE). In the literature the FPE is constructed by identifying the transport coefficients with the ensemble averages of the change of the magnitude of particle velocity and its square in the course of one collision. Although this treatment leads to the correct solution after a sufficiently large number of collisions has been reached, the transient part of the evolution of the PDF is not described. Moreover, in the case of the Fermi-Ulam model (FUM), if a stadanrd simplification is employed, the solution of the FPE is even inconsistent with the values of the transport coefficients used for its derivation. The goal of our work is to provide a self-consistent methodology for the treatment of Fermi acceleration in time-dependent billiards. The proposed approach obviates any assumptions for the continuity of the random process and the existence of the limits formally defining the transport coefficients of the FPE. Specifically, we suggest, instead of the calculation of ensemble averages, the derivation of the one-step transition probability function and the use of the Chapman-Kolmogorov forward equation. This approach is generic and can be applied to any time-dependent billiard for the treatment of Fermi-acceleration. As a first step, we apply this methodology to the FUM, being the archetype of time-dependent billiards to exhibit Fermi acceleration., Comment: 12 Pages, 7 figures

We study the dynamics of the classical and quantum mechanical scattering of a wave packet from an oscillating barrier. Our main focus is on the dependence of the transmission coefficient on the initial energy of the wave packet for a wide range of oscillation frequencies. The behavior of the quantum transmission coefficient is affected by tunneling phenomena, resonances and kinematic effects emanating from the time dependence of the potential. We show that when kinematic effects dominate (mainly in intermediate frequencies), classical mechanics provides very good approximation of quantum results. Moreover, in the frequency region of optimal agreement between classical and quantum transmission coefficient, the transmission threshold, i.e. the energy above which the transmission coefficient becomes larger than a specific small threshold value, is found to exhibit a minimum. We also consider the form of the transmitted wave packet and we find that for low values of the frequency the incoming classical and quantum wave packet can be split into a train of well separated coherent pulses, a phenomenon which can admit purely classical kinematic interpretation.
