From the control point of view, this may be translated into the employment of traffic-responsive systems that respond automatically to the prevailing traffic conditions. This is the aim of the signal control strategy TUC, whose basic philosophy, design methodology, characteristics and application results under both simulated and field conditions are presented in this paper. Based on a store-and-forward type of mathematical modelling and using well-known methodological tools from Automatic Control Theory, the TUC strategy addresses in a simple but efficient way, as demonstrated from the applications so far, the problem of co-ordinated, traffic-responsive signal control in large-scale urban networks. Abstract

Traffic congestion in urban road and freeway networks leads to a strong degradation of the network infrastructure and accordingly reduced throughput, which can be countered via suitable control measures and strategies. After illustrating the main reasons for infrastructure deterioration due to traffic congestion, a comprehensive overview of proposed and implemented control strategies is provided for three areas: urban road networks, freeway networks, and route guidance. Selected application results, obtained from either simulation studies or field implementations, are briefly outlined to illustrate the impact of various control actions and strategies. Abstract

Δημοσίευση σε επιστημονικό περιοδικό Summarization: Improving energy efficiency in buildings is a major priority worldwide. The measures employed to save energy vary in nature, and the decision maker is required to establish an optimal solution, taking into account multiple and usually competitive objectives such as energy consumption, financial costs, environmental performance, etc. In other words, the decision maker is facing the challenge to solve a multi-objective optimization problem, although the common practice usually employs other methods like simulation and multiple criteria decision analysis techniques that exploit possibly many but in any case limited alternative options. The multi-objective decision model, presented herein, aims to overcome this limitation by allowing the examination of a potentially infinite number of alternative measures, evaluated according to a set of criteria, which include the annual primary energy consumption of the building, the annual carbon dioxide emissions and the initial investment cost. These criteria are adjusted to the decision maker’s preferences and are optimized with the aid of compromise programming, which is a well-established multi-objective solution methodology. A simple case study is used to demonstrate the functionality of the proposed decision model. The results verify the feasibility of the approach, thus encouraging further improvements and extensions. Abstract

Summarization: In the years to c ome, public transport will be called to play a significant role towards achieving the sustainable transport system objective set for the future in Europe and beyond. To this end, the quality, accessibility and reliability of its operations should be improv ed. In this context, the favorable treatment of public transport means within the road network may have, among others, a significant contribution. Such treatment can be derived as a result of an appropriate design of the road network facilities and/or the employed signal control at the network junctions. To this end, several approaches have been proposed, and it is the aim of this paper to review them, focusing mainly on those attempting to provide priority via appropriate adjustment, in real time, of the j unction’s signal control. Abstract

Purpose: Uncertainties remain about the safety and efficacy of therapies for managing intracranial hypertension in acute brain injured (ABI) patients. This study aims to describe the therapeutical approaches used in ABI, with/without intracranial pressure (ICP) monitoring, among different pathologies and across different countries, and their association with sixmonths mortality and neurological outcome. Methods: A preplanned subanalysis of the SYNAPSE-ICU study, a multicentre, prospective, international, observational cohort study, describing the ICP treatment, graded according to Therapy Intensity Level (TIL) scale, in patients with ABI during the first week of intensive care unit (ICU) admission. Results: 2320 patients were included in the analysis. The median age was 55 (I-III quartiles = 39-69) years, and 800 (34.5%) were female. During the first week from ICU admission, no-basic TIL was used in 382 (16.5%) patients, mild-moderate in 1643 (70.8%), and extreme in 295 cases (eTIL, 12.7%).
