The aim of this study was to analyse the relationship between the expression of the bcl-2 proto-oncogene and the histological grading of prostate cancer according to the Gleason score. To study the prognostic significance of Bcl-2 over expression in prostate cancer, 36 consecutive radical prostatectomy specimens were examined by immunohistochemistry. Bcl-2 was associated with malignant phenotype. Bcl-2 over expression (found in 14 – 38.89% tumours) was associated with high Gleason score. These data suggest that altered expression of Bcl-2 plays a role in prostate cancer progression. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Prominent nucleoli are an important diagnostic feature of prostate cancer. Various attributes of nucleoli are useful markers for diagnosis and prognosis. Iatrogenic esotracheal fistula in pediatric patients is an extremely rare complication, and appears either because of the pressure exercised by the tracheostomy cannula or in patients that are long-term bearers of esogastric tubes, which will cause, together with the cannula, ischemic injuries and necrosis of the tissue. The treatment of these lesions is controversial. The paper presents the management of a pediatric patient with an acquired esotracheal fistula, secondary to a tracheostomy.

The aims of this five-year retrospective study was to investigate the common etiologies, clinical, biological and pathological patterns of lower gastrointestinal bleeding in children from a hospital center in northeastern Romania. We included in the study 118 children with lower gastrointestinal hemorrhage or two consecutive positive fecal occult blood tests. Patients were divided into three age groups (0-2 years, 3-10 years, 11-18 years) and the findings were reported separately for each group. Gastrointestinal bleeding was more common among 3-10-year-old children. Hematochezia was the most common form of presentation (54.2%), followed by rectorrhagia (40.7%). Each patient underwent a colonoscopy with bioptic mapping. The most common colonoscopy finding was solitary colorectal polyps in 39 cases (33.1%), followed by suggestive aspects for ulcerative colitis in 26 patients (22.0%); only 15 (12.7%) were histologically confirmed. Endoscopic polypectomy was performed in all cases. We report two perforations and one hemorrhage that required surgery.

Therefore, in this article, we emphasize that they are equally useful for the daily management of a business, even if a business needs or not the new investment. Businesses need plans to optimize the growth and the development in accordance with the priorities.

Objective: To demonstrate the efficiency of complex rehabilitation treatment for carpal tunnel syndrome. Material and method: There were selected 30 patients with carpal tunnel syndrome with moderate severity. We used Boston questionnaire for the assessment of severity of symptoms and functional status and sonographic exam. Sonographic examination of carpal tunnel was directed towards median nerve CSA (cross-sectional area) measurement. For patients with moderate symptoms we found a CSA between 11.8 and 14.3 mm². Patients were randomly divided in two groups. All patients received NSAID and local applications of therapeutic laser and therapeutic ultrasound (three times a week for four weeks) Patients from group B received also a wrist-hand orthosis with wrist joint and MCP joints in neutral (to be worn at night time for 4 weeks). Clinical and sonographic assessment was done at the beginning of the study and at the end of the treatment. Results: Complex rehabilitation treatment (therapeutic laser, therapeutic ultrasound and wrist-hand orthosis) proved to be efficient in symptoms control. Comparing the results from group A and group B we found that the improvement was significant for patients from group B. Pain control was not significant for patients from group A. Conclusions: Conservative treatment in carpal tunnel syndrome proved to be effective when local treatment is associated with nocturnal wearing of a wrist-hand orthosis. Background: Due to recent advances in healthcare, more and more teenagers with chronic diseases emerge into adulthood, posing challenges for both pediatric and adult healthcare systems. The transition from pediatric to adult healthcare settings presents a complex and pivotal phase for adolescents managing chronic conditions. This process necessitates collaboration among adolescents, parents, pediatric specialists, and adult healthcare providers., Aims: This study aims to assess the current practices of doctors caring for teenagers with chronic digestive diseases and to identify the needs and barriers experienced by professionals during the transition of their patients., Methods: In order to achieve the aims of this study, we employed a cross-sectional survey study. Pediatric gastroenterologists (PG), general pediatricians (GP), adult gastroenterologists (AG), and primary care physicians (PCP) applied a 20-closed multiple-choice questionnaire., Results: There were 70 responders; 90% did not follow a transition program. The ideal age for beginning the transition was considered 16-17 (51.4%), and the transfer was recommended at 19-20 years of age by 42.9% and at 18 by 45.7%. Regarding the resources, 78.55% required an online platform, 58.55% solicited transition readiness assessments, 51.41% identified online forms distributed through social media, 48.55% selected brochures for patients and families, and a guideline for medical practitioners. Both GPs and PGs (0.836, p<0.05) requested higher numbers of resources. Identified barriers were the absence of a transition expert (65.7%), lack of time for individualized transition programs (61.41%), patients' psycho-emotional attachment to the pediatric team (52.84%), and adolescents' lack of disease knowledge (57.13%)., Conclusions: Investigating the roles and challenges faced by healthcare professionals during the transitional period is crucial for optimizing continuity of care, enhancing patient outcomes, and addressing systemic gaps in healthcare delivery. In this study, we present four cases of Human Bocavirus (HBoV) infection in children aged between 1 month and 4 years. Among these cases, two siblings were hospitalized with similar symptoms. Among the four pediatric cases of patients with HBoV infection, three were associated with acute respiratory failure and spontaneous pneumothorax, and two of these presented with subcutaneous emphysema. The presented patients were young children, aged between 1 month and 4 years, two of whom were siblings, suggesting a possible intrafamilial transmission of HBoV1 infection. These cases highlight the importance of considering HBoV as a differential diagnosis in pediatric patients with respiratory and gastrointestinal symptoms. Early recognition and appropriate medical care are important in treating HBoV infection in young children.

Background: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is highly prevalent in children and adolescents, particularly those with obesity. NAFLD is considered a hepatic manifestation of the metabolic syndrome due to its close associations with abdominal obesity, insulin resistance, and atherogenic dyslipidemia. Experts have proposed an alternative terminology, metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD), to better reflect its pathophysiology. This study aimed to develop consensus statements and recommendations for pediatric MAFLD through collaboration among international experts., Methods: A group of 65 experts from 35 countries and six continents, including pediatricians, hepatologists, and endocrinologists, participated in a consensus development process. The process encompassed various aspects of pediatric MAFLD, including epidemiology, mechanisms, screening, and management., Findings: In round 1, we received 65 surveys from 35 countries and analyzed these results, which informed us that 73.3% of respondents agreed with 20 draft statements while 23.8% agreed somewhat. The mean percentage of agreement or somewhat agreement increased to 80.85% and 15.75%, respectively, in round 2. The final statements covered a wide range of topics related to epidemiology, pathophysiology, and strategies for screening and managing pediatric MAFLD., Conclusions: The consensus statements and recommendations developed by an international expert panel serve to optimize clinical outcomes and improve the quality of life for children and adolescents with MAFLD. Background and Objectives : Health professionals have voiced concerns about the danger of self-medication in times of growing use of over-the-counter medicines and, in some contexts, the unregulated selling of them. Previous research has examined the incidence of parental self-medication as well as the use and abuse of antibiotics without medical advice. However, these studies have limited evidence on the role of family doctors and the perceived severity of self-medication in the case of parents. Based on the Health Belief Model, our research tested the effects of exposure to medical information on the parents' attitudes toward self-treating their children, without medical advice. Specifically, we aimed to assess whether exposure to information warning about the risks of treating children without a medical prescription influences parents' attitudes toward administering medicines to their children without medical advice. Materials and Methods : 210 parents engaged in the study, and were divided into two groups. One group was exposed to educational materials related to the perils of self-medication and the second one was not. All participants answered the same questionnaire and the answers were compared between the two groups. Results : The results showed that our respondents evaluated the practices of self-medication negatively (a higher score indicates a more negative evaluation), especially when it came to treating their children without medical advice (3.91 ± 1.04 for unexposed and 3.98 ± 1.08 for exposed). However, their attitudes towards self-medication varied depending on their beliefs about administering certain medications. Both those exposed to the warning information and those who were not exposed have agreed that they are unable to avoid treatment of their ill child without medical advice. Conclusions : In general, our respondents evaluate negatively the practices of self-medication, especially the treatment of their children without medical advice. Therefore, future health education campaigns need to be targeted specifically, with messages that guide how to act in particular cases depending on the medication used and the child's condition.

Background: Helicobacter pylori antibiotic resistance has increased worldwide and affects the effectiveness of current therapies. The recommended first-line empiric treatment should be tailored to the local clarithromycin resistance rate. This study aimed to determine the pediatric patient profile and rate of clarithromycin resistance for patients diagnosed with Helicobacter pylori by gastric biopsy., Methods: We studied 84 positive gastric samples for Helicobacter pylori . Positive results were confirmed by a rapid urease test and histopathological examination, with the type of gastritis established according to the Sydney System. Gastric biopsy samples were stored in RNA saver. Clarithromycin resistance was determined by a real-time polymerase chain reaction-based molecular assay after RNA-DNA extraction., Results: Of the 84 biopsy samples analyzed, 35 (41.6%) were resistant to clarithromycin. Clarithromycin resistance was found mainly in girls (80%) with a mean age of 15 years (range 6-17 years). The history of prior exposure to clarithromycin was 91.6%. The concordance between the histopathological examination and the PCR test was 100%., Conclusions: One in 2.4 children infected with Helicobacter pylori had a strain resistant to clarithromycin. This resistant strain may be a reason for treatment failure in Romanian children, yet this is uninvestigated. The high rate of bacterial resistance to this antibiotic among children indicates the need for susceptibility testing before therapy.

Inflammatory bowel disease represents one of the most life-altering gastrointestinal pathologies, with its multifactorial nature and unclear physiopathology. The most relevant clinical forms, ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease, clinically manifest with mild to severe flares and remission periods that alter the patient's social, familial and professional integration. The chronic inflammatory activity of the intestinal wall determines severe modifications of the local environment, such as dysbiosis, enteric endocrine, nervous and immune system disruptions and intestinal wall permeability changes. These features are part of the gastrointestinal ecosystem that modulates the bottom-to-top signaling to the central nervous system, leading to a neurobiologic imbalance and clinical affective and/or behavioral symptoms. The gut-brain link is a bidirectional pathway and psychological distress can also affect the central nervous system, which will alter the top-to-bottom regulation, leading to possible functional digestive symptoms and local inflammatory responses. In the middle of this neuro-gastrointestinal system, the microbiome is a key player, as its activities offer basic functional support for both relays. The present article presents current scientific information that links the pathophysiology and clinical aspects of inflammatory bowel disease and psychiatric symptomatology through the complex mechanism of the gut-brain axis and the modulatory effects of the gut microbiota.

(1) Background: The recent epidemiological events were high-stress level generators for humanity, particularly for pregnant women, influencing their attitude, behavior, and decisions regarding vaccination during pregnancy or regarding their future child. The aim of this study was to analyze the anti-pertussis vaccination decision-shaping factors in pregnant women during two epidemiological periods: the measles epidemic and the COVID-19 pandemic. (2) Methods: Two groups of pregnant women were invited to be part of a medical education program, having as the main theme the infectious disease risks and their prevention through vaccination. Before launching the program, participants received a 12-item questionnaire. From a total number of 362 pregnant women enrolled in the study, 182 participated in 2019, and 180 participated in 2022. (3) Results: The socio-demographic data revealed that the age of pregnant women participating in medical education programs increased in 2022 by 1.7 years ( p < 0.01). In vitro fertilization was reported in a significantly higher proportion (20% in 2022 vs 9.8% in 2019, p < 0.01). Participation in community-initiated educational programs almost doubled during the pandemic time from 18.7% in 2019 to 33.9% in 2022 ( p < 0.01). Pertussis vaccine acceptancy (VA) dropped from 85% in 2019 to 44.4% in 2022 ( p < 0.01) (4) Conclusions: In this study, we reported fast-growing vaccine hesitancy and severe declared vaccine reluctance. The results of this complex long-term study, which evaluated pregnant women over several years, showed a five-fold increase in the percentage of pregnant women who disagreed with personal pertussis vaccination. This draws attention to the risks of pertussis epidemic outbreaks in pregnant women and their future infants in the first couple of months of life before the initiation of vaccination.

(1) Background: Immunization of pregnant women (PWs) against Bordetella pertussis infection is still a challenging health matter. (2) Methods: We gathered questionnaire data from 180 PWs regarding their expectancies and current opinion on infectious disease prevention. For the group of PWs who agreed to further investigations, the serum levels of Ig G anti-B. pertussis antibodies (IgG-PT) titer were measured and analyzed. (3) Results: A total of 180 PWs completed the questionnaire and 98 (54.44%, study group) accepted to perform the laboratory tests. During the first two pregnancy trimesters, PWs were found to be more willing (compared with the control group) to test for identifying high-risk situations that could affect themselves and their future infant ( p < 0.001). Most of the participating PWs (91, 91.9%) had low levels of anti-pertussis antibodies (values < 40 IU/mL). Declared vaccine coverage of the PWs newborn infants for DTaP-1 and Prevenar 13 (at 2 months) and DTaP-2 and Prevenar 13 (at 4 months) vaccination reached 100% in the study group, while in the control group only 30/82 (36.59%) PWs accepted to be vaccinated during pregnancy, none of them providing data on their infants' vaccine coverage. (4) Conclusions: Enrolled PWs faced a waning immunity against the B. pertussis infection. By raising maternal confidence in the protective role of vaccines against infectious diseases, better vaccine acceptance and better infant vaccine coverage can be achieved.

Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders have been an important cause of poor life quality in affected populations. The unclear etiology and pathophysiological mechanism alter the clinical evolution of the patient. Although a strong connection with psychological stress has been observed, it was not until recently that the gut-brain axis involvement has been revealed. Furthermore, the current literature not only promotes the gut-brain axis modulation as a therapeutical target for functional digestive disorders but also states that the gut microbiome has a main role in this bi-directional mechanism. Psychiatric symptoms are currently recognized as an equally important aspect of the clinical manifestation and modulation of both the digestive and central nervous systems and could be the best approach in restoring the balance. As such, this article proposes a detailed description of the physiology of the microbiome-gut-brain axis, the pathophysiology of the functional gastrointestinal disorders with psychiatric symptoms and current perspectives for therapeutical management, as revealed by the latest studies in the scientific literature.

Introduction: In Romania, studies on the pediatric population regarding H. pylori infection or bacterial resistance to antibiotics are limited. Eradication treatment of this infection still raises important problems in medical practice. This study aims to compare the effectiveness of three eradication therapies used against H. pylori infection in the pediatric population., Methods: The prospective study enrolled children aged 6-17 years who were first diagnosed with H. pylori infection. Patients received a randomized treatment either the therapy with clarithromycin (CLR), the therapy with metronidazole (MTZ) or sequential therapy. The effectiveness of the eradication treatment was evaluated after 4-8 weeks from the end of the therapy by testing fecal antigen., Results: 149 patients were enrolled over 18 months. The eradication rates were 49.5% for the treatment scheme with proton pump inhibitor (PPI) + amoxicillin (AMO) + MTZ, 26.7% for PPI + AMO + CLR and 23.8% for sequential therapy. MTZ therapy was superior to CLR therapy, but sequential therapy was not. Side effects were recorded for PPI + AMO + CLR with 39.6%, followed by sequential therapy 37.7%, and only 22.6% for PPI + AMO + MTZ., Conclusions: Therapy with MTZ can achieve a higher eradication rate as a first-line treatment in the case of H. pylori infection. Taking into account that Romania is in an area with increased resistance to CLR, MTZ therapy could be a promising alternative.

Background: According to WHO, infectious disease control can be achieved if the vaccine coverage (VC) exceeds 90%. In recent years there has been a declining trend in VC which could lead to the recurrence of infectious diseases. Objectives: The study analyzed the determinants of VC and of parental decisions regarding immunization in children aged 0−1 year monitored during two high-risk epidemiological periods (the measles epidemic and the COVID-19 pandemic period). Methods: A retrospective observational cohort study-data regarding vaccination of children younger than 1 year of age during the periods January 2019−June 2019 (measles epidemic) and January 2020−June 2020 (COVID-19 pandemic) were analyzed. 2.850 children from 2019 and 2.823 children from 2020 were enrolled. Family physicians interacted with 2840 parents or legal guardians in 2019 and with 2800 parents or legal guardians in 2020, during the infants’ consults providing medical information and answer to their questions and worries regarding their immunization. Data on immunization schedules on the determinants of parents’ decisions regarding vaccination were evaluated. Results: During 2019−2020, VC has followed a declining trend for each type of vaccine included in the Romanian National Immunization Program; the most affected were infants aged 9−12 months during both periods: in 9-month aged infants, the MMR vaccine VC was 67.49% in 2019 vs. 59.04% in 2020 (p < 0.004). In the 12 months aged infants, the MMR VC was 64.29% in 2019 vs. 55.88% in 2020 (p < 0.005). For the Hexavalent vaccine administered at the age of 11 months, the VC was 71.59% in 2019 vs. 62.08% in 2020 (p < 0.001). The determinants of parents’ decisions regarding vaccination included parental hesitance 2019—25% vs. 2020—35%, fear on side effects 2019—32% vs. 2020—45%, vaccination denial 2019—7% vs. 2020—10%. Conclusion: We found a declining trend in the VC in Romania during the epidemic and pandemic periods. The decrease in VC for MMR generated a major risk for new measles outbreaks Permanent awareness educational campaigns regarding infectious disease risk are needed, accompanied by the empowerment of primary care and the emergence of an immunization management program based on national regulatory legislation.

Self-medication represents a significant healthcare and health policy issue worldwide, both in developed and underdeveloped countries. Currently, the COVID-19 pandemic is considered a relevant context that could subtly trigger self-medication behavior because of limited access to health care services and the threat of infection with the SARS-CoV-2 virus. While the previous research conducted with quantitative methodologies reported a dramatically increased rate of self-medication around the world, qualitative inquiries on the subjective experience with self-medicine remain scarce in medical and related fields of study. For this purpose, a qualitative study with semi-structured interviews was undertaken to better understand how Romanian mothers (n = 18) applied self-treatment with their children by avoiding medical advice during the COVID-19 pandemic. The results showed that the COVID-19 pandemic did not affect the prevalence of self-medicine among the pediatric population as parents achieved a degree of awareness of self-treatment of their children due to the general context of the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Background and Objectives: The aim of this study was to investigate the association between H. pylori positivity with specific symptoms, risk factors and endoscopic patterns among the pediatric population in northeastern Romania. Materials and Methods: A prospective study was performed in 18 months on 185 children aged 6−18 years with an indication for upper digestive endoscopy. Demographic, anamnestic, symptomatic, endoscopic and histologic data were recorded. Results: Of 116 H. pylori-positive children, the most affected group was 15−17 years. Most (65.5%) of them were girls, with a significant association (p < 0.001). The majority (66.4%) lived in a rural area and 47.4% of children had an unsafe source of water and lived in overcrowded houses with no basic sanitary comfort. The most frequent symptom was epigastric pain (56.9%), and the main endoscopic appearance was nodularity and hyperemia. Patients diagnosed with H. pylori started triple-therapy treatment for 14 days. Only 13.8% stopped the treatment, mainly because of a misunderstanding of the treatment protocol (9.5%). Conclusions: Romanian teen girls living in rural areas are at high risk for H. pylori infection. Epigastric pain and endoscopic nodularity of the gastric mucosa were associated with the infection. As the resistance of the bacteria is unknown in our country, future research is needed in order to improve the eradication rate.

Magnesium orotate has been cited in the medical literature for the past three years as a possible adjuvant in some pediatric and adult gastroenterological disorders associated with dysbiosis. Studies also focus on the possibility of adding magnesium orotate in psychiatric disorders' treatment, such as major depression and anxiety. The most relevant element in these studies is the efficiency of magnesium orotate therapy in cases with both gastroenterological and psychiatric symptoms. This article proposes a literature review, focused on the studies published in the last three years, targeting magnesium orotate treatment and probiotic supplementation in patients with both digestive and psychiatric symptoms. Moreover, this review will compare the efficiency of magnesium orotate and probiotics within both the pediatric and adult communities, focusing on the possibility of gut-brain axis modulation and its involvement in the clinical evolution of these patients.

Background: In March 2020, the WHO declared the SARS CoV-2 pandemic. This had an immediate and dramatic impact on Romanian physicians., Objectives: To analyse SARS-CoV-2 risk perception among Romanian physicians following the official WHO pandemic announcement., Methods: A questionnaire was sent to Romanian physicians ( n  = 319) between 13 and 27 of March 2020 to determine the perceived threat of exposure to SARS CoV-2 infection, the assessment COVID-19 sources of documentation, physicians' access to personal protective equipment and the attitude towards a prospective vaccine against SARS CoV-2., Results: Confronted with a new and unknown disease, the lack of appropriate information regarding disease management, media pressure and the lack of protective equipment, physicians experiencing a highly stressful a period. We found a significant relationship between the perceived level of fear and the risk of infection with SARS CoV-2 among respondents. A relationship was also found between the perceived level of fear related to COVID-19 and the acceptance of future vaccines against SARS CoV-2. Our data show that doctors working in urban areas considered the medical research on COVID-19 as clearer than those working in rural locations did., Conclusion: Pandemic preparedness should focus on measures that make medical practice safe (supplies, working protocols, experience sharing with experts/colleagues from other countries).

The presence of pancreatic cancer during childhood is extremely rare, and physicians may be tempted to overlook this diagnosis based on age criteria. However, there are primary malignant pancreatic tumors encountered in pediatric patients, such as pancreatoblastoma, and tumors considered benign in general but may present a malignant potential, such as the solid pseudo-papillary tumor, insulinoma, gastrinoma, and vasoactive intestinal peptide secreting tumor. Their early diagnosis and management are of paramount importance since the survival rates tend to differ for various types of these conditions. Many pediatric cancers may present pancreatic metastases, such as renal cell carcinoma, which may evolve with pancreatic metastatic disease even after two or more decades. Several childhood diseases may create a predisposition for the development of pancreatic cancer during adulthood; hence, there is a need for extensive screening strategies and complex programs to facilitate the transition from pediatric to adult healthcare. Nevertheless, genetic studies highlight the fact the specific gene mutations and family aggregations may be correlated with a special predisposition towards pancreatic cancer. Background and Objectives: Without mandatory school-based education, Romania is a leading European country in teen pregnancy. This survey aimed at assessing the level of knowledge and the opinions about sexual education and sexual-related issues among mothers of female teenagers aged 13-18 years old. Material and Methods : The survey was conducted between 2015 and 2017 and had four parts, collecting data about sociodemographic variables, the level of knowledge about sexuality, sexually transmitted diseases, and contraception. The respondents were mothers of female teenagers hospitalized in a tertiary pediatric clinic. Data were analyzed using IBM Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) Statistics for Windows, version 25 (Inc., Chicago, IL, USA). Results : One hundred and thirty-five mothers (42.46 ± 6.81 years old) were included in the research. Most of them were from rural areas, had graduated secondary school, were Christian-orthodox, married, and with a stable job. More than half of the mothers (61.42%) declared that they personally knew adolescents that were already mothers. In great proportion, mothers proved good knowledge about sexual education, contraception, and STDs. They considered that the minimum age for becoming married, in general, is about M = 18.62 ± 2.09 years old but in the case of their daughters, mothers appreciated that the best age would be 23.56 ± 9.37. Mothers considered that they had good communication with their daughters (M = 4.28 ± 0.99) and two-thirds sustained that they had discussed with them about sexual activity, pregnancy, sexually transmitted diseases, and contraception. In case of unwanted pregnancy of their daughters, one-third of the mothers (38.50%) would advise their girls to continue the pregnancy and 7.40% mentioned the termination of pregnancy. Two-thirds of them (74.10%) agreed to school-based sexual education. In the order of preferred sources for sexual education, mothers mentioned parents (85.90%), teachers (33.30%), and family doctors (24.40%). Comparative results regarding their own sex life and that of their daughters are presented. Conclusions : School-based programs should meet parental beliefs about sexuality and sexual education. School, as a creator of values and models, should find the golden ratio to better shape the personal, familial, and social needs for the healthy sexual behavior of the new generation.

Micronutrient deficiencies can arise in various conditions, including inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), and diagnosing these deficiencies can be challenging in the absence of specific clinical signs. The aim of this study was to evaluate the status of various trace elements hair concentration in IBD patients compared to a healthy control group and to identify potential correlations between the micronutrient status and relevant parameters related to disease activity. The concentrations of iron, magnesium, calcium, zinc, copper, manganese, selenium and sulfur in the hair of 37 IBD patients with prior diagnosed IBD (12 Crohn's disease and 25 ulcerative colitis) and 31 healthy controls were evaluated by Energy Dispersive X-Ray spectroscopy (EDX). Significant differences in hair concentration profile of studied trace elements were identified for IBD patients compared to healthy controls. A significantly decreased hair concentration of iron, magnesium, calcium and selenium and a significantly increased sulfur hair concentration were observed in IBD patients at the time of evaluation. A decreased hair calcium concentration ( r = -0.772, p = 0.003) and an increased sulfur concentration ( r = 0.585, p = 0.046) were significantly correlated with disease activity. Conclusion: Hair mineral and trace elements evaluation may contribute to a proper evaluation of their status in IBD patients and improving the management of nutritional status of IBD patients.

Background and Objectives : Over the last years, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) has been reported on a high incidence in pediatric populations and has been associated with numerous extraintestinal manifestations, making its management a real challenge for the pediatric gastroenterologist. Dermatological manifestations in IBD are either specific, related to the disease activity or treatment-associated, or non-specific. This literature review aims to identify and report the dermatological manifestations of IBD in children, the correlation between their appearance and the demographical characteristics, the relationship between these lesions and disease activity, and to highlight the impact of dermatological manifestations on an IBD treatment regime., Materials and Methods: A systemic literature review was performed, investigating articles and case reports on dermatological manifestations in children with IBD starting from 2005. A total of 159 potentially suitable articles were identified and after the exclusion process, 75 articles were selected., Results: The most common dermatological manifestations reported in pediatric IBD are erythema nodosum and pyoderma gangrenosum. More rare cases of metastatic Crohn's disease, epidermolysis bullosa acquisita, small-vessel vasculitis, necrotizing vasculitis, leukocytoclastic vasculitis, cutaneous polyarteritis nodosa, and Sweet's syndrome have been reported. Oral manifestations of IBD are divided into specific (tag-like lesions, mucogingivitis, lip swelling with vertical fissures, aphthous stomatitis, and pyostomatitis vegetans) and non-specific. IBD treatment may present with side effects involving the skin and mucosa. Anti-tumor necrosis factor agents have been linked to opportunistic skin infections, psoriasiform lesions, and a potentially increased risk for skin cancer. Cutaneous manifestations such as acrodermatitis enteropathica, purpuric lesions, and angular cheilitis may appear secondary to malnutrition and/or malabsorption., Conclusions: The correct diagnosis of dermatological manifestations in pediatric IBD is of paramount importance because of their impact on disease activity, treatment options, and a patient's psychological status.
