Psoriasis shows a higher prevalence and a worse progression in obese than in lean subjects. The IL-23/IL-17 immune axis has a pivotal role in the pathogenesis of psoriasis and anti-IL-23 monoclonal antibodies are highly effective in its treatment. Since obesity in frequently associated with elevated insulin plasma levels, we have investigated the ability of in vitro differentiated human adipocytes to produce IL-23 at basal conditions and after insulin stimulation.Material and Methods: In vitro differentiated human adipocytes were incubated in the absence and presence of different insulin concentrations and the expression of IL-23 was analyzed by real-time PCR and Western blotting.Results: The results of this study show that in vitro differentiated human adipocytes spontaneously express IL-23 mRNA and protein being stimulated by insulin in a dose-dependent manner. The stimulatory effects of insulin on IL-23 expression were specific since it did not stimulate the expression of other well-known cytokines involved in psoriasis pathogenesis such as Il-22 nor LL-37. Furthermore, lipopolysaccharide did not stimulate IL-23 expression in human adipocytes, thus highlightening the specific effects of insulin in the stimulation of IL-23 expression in human adipocytes.Conclusion: Here we show that human adipocytes spontaneously express IL-23 and that insulin stimulates IL-23 production by these cells in a specific manner as other stimuli, known to be involved in psoriasis pathophysiology, are ineffective. These observations could explain the association between psoriasis and obesity, a condition frequently characterized by a state of insulin hypersecretion.Keywords: adipocyte, human, IL-23, insulin, obesity, psoriasis

Study aim. The purpose of the current study is to determine the impact of single bouts of physical exercise of different duration and intensity on young adults’ executive functions.

This paper conducts a systematic literature review (SLR) to evaluate the effectiveness of computational persuasion technology (CPT) in the eHealth domain. Over the past fifteen years, CPT has been used in various scenarios, from promoting healthy diets to supporting chronic disease management. Despite the proliferation of intelligent systems and Web-based applications, the ethical and legal nuances of these technologies have become increasingly significant. The review follows a structured methodology, assessing 92 primary studies through sixteen research questions covering demographics, application scenarios, user requirements, objectives, functionalities, technologies, advantages, limitations, proposed solutions, ethical and legal implications, and the role of explainable AI (XAI). The findings indicate that while CPT holds promise in inducing behavioral change, many prototypes remain untested on a large scale (60% of surveyed studies only developed at a conceptual level), and long-term effectiveness is still uncertain (36% report attaining their goals, but none focuses on long-term assessment). The study highlights the need for more comparative analyses of persuasion models and tailored approaches to meet diverse user needs. Ethical and legal concerns, such as patient consent, data privacy, and potential for users’ manipulation, are under-explored and require deeper investigation. The paper recommends a bottom-up regulatory approach to create more effective and flexible ethical and legal guidelines for CPT applications.In conclusion, significant advancements have been made in CPT for eHealth, but ongoing research is essential to address current limitations, enhance user acceptability and adherence, and ensure ethical and legal soundness.

IntroductionBulimic episodes experienced by patients with Binge Eating Disorder (BED) might be sustained by an enhanced behavioral propensity to approach food stimuli.MethodsTo test this hypothesis, automatic approach avoidance tendencies toward high-calorie foods (HCF), low-calorie foods (LCF), and neutral objects were assessed in a group of 23 patients with BED, and their performance was compared to the one of 17 patients with obesity without BED and a group of 32 normal weight participants. All participants performed a mobile approach-avoidance task in which they were required to approach and avoid different stimuli by respectively pulling their phone toward themselves or pushing it away. Reaction times were analyzed.ResultsResults showed a significant three-way interaction between group, type of movement and stimulus. Post-hoc analyses revealed that all the groups displayed an approach bias toward HCF. Patients with BED and healthy controls also displayed an approach bias toward LCF, a bias that was absent in obese individuals without BED. Moreover, patients with BED were faster in approaching food stimuli, both HCF and LCF, compared to healthy controls.DiscussionThese behavioral tendencies are quite consistent with the real-life attitudes of both BED patients and patients with obesity and might contribute to the maintenance of unhealthy eating habits such as binging in patients with BED and high-calorie diets in patients with obesity.

The physical, psychological and social changes that occur during adolescence constitute a physiological crisis that is necessary for development and growth. The establishment of a suitable “self-image” is important for facilitating harmonious psychophysical development during this time. In the current era, digital technology (DT) serves as an extraordinary means of communication for young people, who make significant use of images as a mode of expression. Accordingly, there is growing interest in the relationship between physical development, self-image and use of DT. A review of the published literature on the topic was carried out in April 2024. Fourteen studies (n = 14) were inclused from search of electronic databases such as PubMed, CINAHL, PsycInfo, MedLine, and Cochrane Library. The aim of this study is to explore the influence of (DT) on cultural models of adolescent body image, and how this “social” culture can affect wellbeing and development. It was considered that the rise of DT and social media (SM) emphasized in young people the culture of appearance, adherence to ideal models (thinness ideal) and social comparison at an unprecedented level. It was estimated that the digital mechanism works on the adolescent’s vulnerability and stimulates the desire for experimentation and amplifies cultural beliefs that expose the young to deviant or pathological behaviors on the body. The use of digital images emphasizes the perception of self by making it more real and alive but empty of content. Our framework highlights that the adolescent can defend himself if he leaves the homologation that the SM condition, regains his own experiences, fill with emotional content and real life the images and the representation of the body.

ObjectivesCardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are a leading cause of death worldwide, emerging from a combination of several factors. The aim of this review is to define the psychological factors that are significant in the development and progression of these disorders.MethodsStudies published through 2023 concerning adults with psychological vulnerability factors and/or cardiovascular disease were selected through searches of PubMed, PsychINFO, Science Direct, and Google Scholar.ResultsPsychological stress may influence CVD, in combination with other risk factors, or it can act independently, as in cases of workplace stress, post-traumatic stress disorder, Takotsubo syndrome and bereavement. Coping strategies, anxiety and depression have also been identified as relevant psychological factors in cardiac patients. Adverse childhood experiences are linked to a reduced quality of life and have been identified as significant risk factors for the development of acquired CVDs.ConclusionThis review demonstrates that several psychological factors affect cardiovascular function. An in-depth study of the psychological correlates of CVDs would allow healthcare professionals to design more effective prevention and intervention programs.

Background and Aim: Increased oxidative stress within the airways is associated to epithelial damage and amplification of inflammatory responses that in turn contribute to Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) progression. This study was aimed to identify whether a new formulation of N-acetylcisteine (NAC), carnitine, curcumin and B2 vitamin could counteract oxidative stress and downstream pro-inflammatory events promoted by cigarette smoke extract (CSE) exposure in primary bronchial epithelial cells (PBEC), both submerged/undifferentiated (S-PBEC) and cultured at the air-liquid interface (ALI-PBEC).Methods: PBEC were exposed to CSE with/without the new formulation or NAC alone and ROS production, IL-8 and IL-6 gene expression and protein release were evaluated.Results: CSE increased ROS, IL-8 and IL-6 gene expression and protein release and the new formulation counteracted these effects. NAC alone was not effective on IL-8 and IL-6 release. The effects of a similar nutraceutical formulation were evaluated in COPD patients treated for six months. The results showed that the treatment reduced the concentration of IL-8 in nasal wash and improved quality of life.Conclusion: The tested formulation, exerting antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects, can preserve airway epithelial homeostasis and improve clinical symptoms in COPD.

Microplastics and nanoplastics (MNPs) are becoming an increasingly severe global problem due to their widespread distribution and complex impact on living organisms. Apart from their environmental impact, the effects of MNPs on living organisms have also continued to attract attention. The harmful impact of MNPs has been extensively documented in marine invertebrates and larger marine vertebrates like fish. However, the research on the toxicity of these particles on mammals is still limited, and their possible effects on humans are poorly understood. Considering that MNPs are commonly found in food or food packaging, humans are primarily exposed to them through ingestion. It would be valuable to investigate the potential harmful effects of these particles on gut health. This review focuses on recent research exploring the toxicological impacts of micro- and nanoplastics on the gut, as observed in human cell lines and mammalian models. Available data from various studies indicate that the accumulation of MNPs in mammalian models and human cells may result in adverse consequences, in terms of epithelial toxicity, immune toxicity, and the disruption of the gut microbiota. The paper also discusses the current research limitations and prospects in this field, aiming to provide a scientific basis and reference for further studies on the toxic mechanisms of micro- and nanoplastics.

Introduction: Since the introduction of Highly Active Anti-Retroviral Therapy (HAART), there has been a significant increase in the survival of HIV-infected patients. Consequently, there has been increased attention on the potential neoplastic pathologies, such as Kaposi’s sarcoma, associated with AIDS in these individuals. Case Report: In this case report we present, for the first time, a patient affected by Kaposi's sarcoma of the palatine tonsil with a concomitant syphilis infection. The patient underwent enlarged tonsillectomy and continued antiretroviral therapy. There were no signs of disease recurrence at a 12-month follow-up. Conclusions: Despite the rarity of tonsillar localization of Kaposi's sarcoma, it should be suspected in the presence of an HIV-infected patient. Tonsillectomy effectively controls local disease, but comprehensive patient management requires a multidisciplinary team of healthcare professionals, including infectious disease specialists, pathologists, and oncologists who work together to provide high-quality and coordinated care.
