Abstract

Influenced by engravings and book illustrations, between the end of the 15th and the beginning of the 16th century maiolica painters began to explore the possibilities of painting narrative subjects, developing a new style called “istoriato”. Livy is one of the classical authors rediscovered in that period and he immediately became a popular source for istoriato maiolica: from modern editions of his works, printed for the first time in vulgar, images were taken that reflected the interest of Renaissance society, in particular of aristocracy and nobility, who were looking for behavior’s models and means of social confirmation. The article aims to analyze some representative cases of istoriato, such as two pieces now at Museo Civico Medievale in Bologna, both representing the inspiring episode of the Roman patrician Marcus Curtius, as it is described by Livy: a beautiful dish, painted in Casteldurante around 1551 by Ludovico and Angelo Picchi for an aristocratic family and part of a luxury service with a celebrative function, reflecting the owner’s erudition and social standing; a smaller cup decorated by Andrea da Negroponte workshop between 1550 and 1560 and intended to bourgeois patrons. In both pieces it is possibile to recognize the practice of assembling different iconographic sources, among which Raphael’s inventions for the Vatican tapestries committed by Pope Leo X in 1515.

Abstract

The Geomorphological Field Camp 2014 in the Castel di Sangro-Scontrone area is the result of geological and geomorphological teaching field work activities carried out in Central Italy by a group of 23 students attending the Structural Geomorphology and Applied Geomorphology courses (Master's Degree in Geological Science and Technology of the Università degli Studi ‘G. d'Annunzio’ Chieti-Pescara, Italy, Department of Engineering and Geology). The Field Camp 2014 was organized in May 2014, following regular classes held during the fall term. General activities for the field camp were developed over four main stages: (1) preliminary analysis of the regional geological and geomorphological setting of the area; (2) preliminary activities for the analysis of the local area (orography, hydrography and photogeology investigations, and geographical information system processing); (3) field work, focused on the analysis of a specific issue concerning structural geomorphology or applied geomorphology (e.g. landscape evolution, river channel change, landslide distribution, and flood hazard); and (4) post-field work production of the map. Finally, the fundamental role of field work in the analysis of landscape and in land management was outlined: indeed, the overall field camp enhanced the crucial role of field-based learning for young geomorphologists in order to acquire a strong sensitivity to geomorphological processes and landscape evolution.

10. NutricheQ Questionnaire assesses the risk of dietary imbalances in toddlers from 1 through 3 years of age.

Abstract

Background: Although a nutrient-poor diet may affect children's growth, especially early in life, few tools to assess dietary imbalances in 1- to 3-year-old children have been developed., Objectives: To investigate the accuracy and test-retest reliability of the NutricheQ Questionnaire in the identification of toddlers with the risk of inadequate intake of micro- and macronutrients in a sample of Italian toddlers., Design: A 3-day weighed food record was performed, and results were compared with outcomes of the NutricheQ Questionnaire in 201 toddlers (training set: 1-3 years old). The accuracy of NutricheQ in the identification of categories of nutritional risk was evaluated using the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves. Test-retest of the tool was estimated using the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) and the Cronbach's alpha statistic, in a validation set of 50 toddlers., Results: The NutricheQ Questionnaire is a valid tool for the identification of toddlers at risk for dietary imbalances. Significant differences in nutrient intake (p<0.005) were found among the three groups of risk identified by the questionnaire: toddlers included in the high-risk group had a lower intake of key nutrients such as iron, vitamin D and other vitamins, and fibre compared to those included in the low-risk group. NutricheQ is also reliable between administrations, as demonstrated by its test-retest reliability. ICC and Cronbach's alpha were 0.73 and 0.83, respectively, for Section 1 of NutricheQ, and 0.55 and 0.70 for Section 2., Conclusions: The NutricheQ Questionnaire is a reliable and consistent tool for the assessment of possible dietary risk factors in Italian toddlers. It consistently identifies toddlers with a high probability of having poor iron and vitamin D intake, and other dietary imbalances.
