2. Traditional Wisdom and Monte Carlo Tree Search Face-to-Face in the Card Game Scopone

Abstract

We present the design of a competitive artificial intelligence for Scopone, a popular Italian card game. We compare rule-based players using the most established strategies (one for beginners and two for advanced players) against players using Monte Carlo Tree Search (MCTS) and Information Set Monte Carlo Tree Search (ISMCTS) with different reward functions and simulation strategies. MCTS requires complete information about the game state and thus implements a cheating player while ISMCTS can deal with incomplete information and thus implements a fair player. Our results show that, as expected, the cheating MCTS outperforms all the other strategies; ISMCTS is stronger than all the rule-based players implementing well-known and most advanced strategies and it also turns out to be a challenging opponent for human players., Comment: Preprint. 10. Canine oral malignant melanoma: genomic and immunohistochemical approaches to better characterize the metastatic dissemination to the lymph node

Abstract

Malignant melanoma is the most common malignant tumour of the oral cavity in the dog, with high rate of metastatic dissemination to the regional lymph nodes and distant organs. There is significant overlap in regards of biologic behaviour, histological appearance and genomic alterations between canine and human OMMs. Therefore, the dog is considered a good preclinical model for this deadly tumour. In the first part of this study we aimed to identify genes that are involved in the metastatic dissemination of canine OMMs by microarray mRNA profiling of 4 pairs of primary tumours and their lymph nodal metastases. These genes could represent a future target for the control and hopefully treatment of the metastatic disease. We pointed out the presence of several genes displaying different expression between the primary and the metastatic tumour. In particular, Rac1 seems to play a key role in the dissemination of melanoma cells to the lymph node, most likely due to its regulatory activity of cell motility. In the second part of the study we assessed the potential improvement of detection of lymphatic invasion in canine primary OMMs by using immunohistochemistry for Prox-1, as the detection of lymphatic invasion in a primary tumour is generally considered an unfavourable prognostic factor for several cancers, including human and canine OMMs. We also tried to prove direct correlation between the presence of lymphatic invasion in the primary tumour and regional lymph node metastasis. Our results showed that Prox-1 IHC is not able to enhance detection of lymphatic invasion in the primary site and that the sensitivity of detection of lymphatic invasion in predicting lymph nodal metastasis is low (46.7%), despite high specificity (97%). Finally, we pointed out the presence of interobserver variability in detecting lymphatic invasion in canine primary OMMs, most likely due to interpretative variation.

Abstract

Objective: To describe the findings of an unusual splenic tumor in a kitten. Methods: A grossly multinodular mass arising from the splenic capsule of a 7-month-old male Havana kitten was echographically detected and surgically removed by splenectomy, then analyzed microscopically and ultrastructurally. Results: The mass showed features of an inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor. Treatment and Outcome: Two months after surgical excision, the mass recurred in the same intraabdominal area but disappeared after 2 months of anti-inflammatory therapy. Follow-up at 18 months after surgery revealed resolution of the disease. Clinical Relevance: Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor in cats have been rarely reported and are usually in the orbital region. Abstract

An adult female spayed Bichon Frise with history of chronic pruritus, atopy and intermittent ear infections was presented for the assessment of generalised erythema, multiple cutaneous nodules, otitis externa and exudative dermatitis only partially and temporarily responsive to oclacitinib and systemic antibiotic treatment. Several investigations were performed, and a diagnosis of cutaneous epitheliotropic lymphoma (CETL) with circulating neoplastic lymphocytes (Sézary syndrome [SS]) with CD3+CD4+CD8− immunophenotype was obtained. The patient was treated with a single dose of L‐asparaginase and then continued on prednisolone only. After 300 days following the initial diagnosis, the dog was humanely euthanized due to disease progression. To our knowledge, this is the first case reported in the literature of a dog with SS with circulating neoplastic T lymphocytes expressing CD4 (T‐helper cells) rather than the more commonly reported CD8+ (T‐cytotoxic) phenotype. 26. Sarcocystis giganteainfection associated with granulomatous eosinophilic myositis in a horse

Abstract

The only Sarcocystisspecies currently known to inhabit the fibers of skeletal and cardiac muscles in horses are S. fayeri, S. bertrami, and S. asinus. We describe herein the invasion of myofibers in a horse by S. gigantea, a sheep-specific species with low virulence in the original host. A hunter gelding was referred to a veterinary surgeon in Newmarket (UK). The anamnestic data reported that the horse had an initial history of swelling of the right forelimb with fluid on the front of the carpus and edema spreading up the forearm. Subsequently, 2 firm lumps were found on the left pectoral muscle adjacent to the axilla of the left forelimb. Histologic examination of biopsies from the lumps revealed multifocal granulomatous eosinophilic myositis associated with intact and degenerate encysted parasites, consistent with Sarcocystisspp. Based on amplification and DNA sequencing of the 18S rRNA gene obtained from formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissue blocks, S. giganteawas identified. The presence of sarcocysts in equine skeletal muscles has been considered an incidental finding, and there are only sporadic associated reports of myositis. Our finding suggests that some Sarcocystisspp. have a wider intermediate host range than believed previously, and that Sarcocystisof other species (not considered horse-associated) can invade the muscle fibers of equids, leading to myositis.

Abstract

This paper analyzes the role of social partners in the governance of the Italian systems of Continuous vocational training. Despite the relevance of the social dialogue approach emphasized at the European level, few empirical studies address the issue of the interactions between the social partners in planning and developing training programs. Through focus group and individual and collective interviews with 42 Italian social partners representatives of the metal-machinery industry, this study provides evidences about the quality of the interactions between trade unions and employer associations in the design, implementation and evaluation of training programs funded by the Italian bipartite body Fondimpresa. The main results show that at the national level the interactions between the social panners seem to work in a quite effective way, while at the territorial and company level the training issue remains a prerogative of the employer. These results are partially determined by the lack of technical skills of the trade union representatives in the workplace, which often results in a concessive approach to training negotiation with the employers. Finally, the interactions between the social partners are negatively affected by the low level of strategic and operational coordination among the various levels of action of the actors themselves. Abstract

Objective—To compare the Kiupel (2 categories) and Patnaik (3 categories) histologic grading systems for predicting the presence of metastasis at the time of initial examination in dogs with cutaneous mast cell tumors (MCTs). Design—Retrospective case series. Animals—386 client-owned dogs with cutaneous MCTs. Procedures—Medical records of dogs with newly diagnosed, histologically confirmed cutaneous MCTs that had undergone complete clinical staging were reviewed for clinical and histopathologic data. Results—All Patnaik grade 1 MCTs (n = 52) were classified as Kiupel low-grade MCTs, and all Patnaik grade 3 MCTs (43) were classified as Kiupel high-grade MCTs. Of the 291 Patnaik grade 2 MCTs, 243 (83.5%) were classified as Kiupel low-grade tumors, and 48 (16.5%) were classified as Kiupel high-grade MCTs. Dogs with Patnaik grade 3 MCTs were significantly more likely to have metastases at the time of initial examination than were dogs with grade 1 or 2 MCTs (OR, 5.46), and dogs with Kiupel high-grade MCTs were significantly more likely to have metastases than were dogs with Kiupel low-grade MCTs (OR, 2.54). However, 3 of 52 (5.8%) dogs with Patnaik grade 1 tumors, 48 of 291 (16.5%) dogs with Patnaik grade 2 tumors, and 44 of 295 (14.9%) dogs with Kiupel low-grade tumors had metastatic disease. Conclusions and Clinical Relevance—Findings indicated that in dogs with cutaneous MCTs, prognostication should not rely on histologic grade alone, regardless of grading system used, but should take into account results of clinical staging.

43. Paraneoplastic ganglioradiculoneuritis in a cat with a plasma cell tumour.

Abstract

Case Summary: An 8-year-old neutered female domestic longhair cat was presented for investigation of a 48 h history of lethargy and pelvic limb ataxia. MRI of the spinal cord and vertebral column (C1 to sacrum) and brain was unremarkable. Lumbar cerebrospinal fluid analysis revealed pleocytosis and increased protein concentration. Thoracic radiographs and abdominal ultrasound were unremarkable. Anti-inflammatory doses of prednisolone were administered. Clinical deterioration occurred over the following 2 days, with the development of lower motor neuron deficits in both thoracic limbs. On repetition of the MRI, bilateral enlargement, T2-weighted hyperintensity, and marked contrast enhancement of the C7, C8 and T1 nerve roots, spinal nerves and brachial plexuses were observed. Infectious disease testing was negative. An immune-mediated inflammatory process was suspected and immunosuppressive doses of prednisolone were commenced. The clinical signs improved transiently, but marked deterioration occurred after 2 weeks. The patient was euthanased and a post-mortem examination was performed. A lymphocytic inflammatory infiltrate was detected in the C7, C8 and T1 nerve roots and dorsal root ganglia, and neoplastic plasma cells were identified in multiple organs. Laboratory abnormalities included mild erythrocytosis, elevated creatine kinase, hypercobalaminaemia and hypofolataemia. CT of the head and abdominal ultrasonography were within normal limits. Gastroesophagoscopy revealed mucosal ulceration and possible stenosis of the distal oesophagus. Thoracic radiographs and iodine oesophagram showed a soft tissue opacity in the caudodorsal thorax compatible with a parietal oesophageal mass causing luminal stenosis or an extra-parietal mass causing ventral displacement and compression of the oesophagus. Pulmonary nodules were observed in the cranial lung lobes. CT of the thorax confirmed the oesophageal origin of the mass and the presence of pulmonary nodules scattered throughout the lung parenchyma. The patient was euthanased given the imaging findings and perceived guarded prognosis. Post-mortem examination revealed multifocal nodular lesions affecting the oesophagus, lungs, kidneys and pancreas. Histopathological examination identified atypical round cells characterised by eosinophilic cytoplasm and pale nuclei with prominent nuclear grooves, compatible with neoplastic histiocytic cells. Immunohistochemistry revealed strong expression for CD18, Iba-1 and vimentin. Transmission electron microscopy demonstrated intracytoplasmic organelles consistent with Birkbeck granules of Langerhans cell origin in lesional histiocytes. Abstract

Two healthy cats underwent elective surgical procedures under general anesthesia. One developed severe esophagitis leading to esophageal rupture, mediastinitis, and pyothorax. The other cat developed esophageal stricture, diverticulum formation, and suspected iatrogenic perforation. Both cats had signs of dysphagia and regurgitation beginning a few days after anesthesia. The first cat also had severe dyspnea due to septic pleural effusion and pneumomediastinum. In the second cat, endoscopy revealed diffuse esophagitis, an esophageal stricture, and a large esophageal diverticulum. Rupture of the esophageal wall occurred while inflating the esophagus for inspection. Due to the poor prognosis, both cats were euthanized. Necropsy revealed severe esophageal changes. Postanesthetic esophagitis has been previously described in dogs and cats; however, severe life-threatening esophageal injuries rarely occur as a sequel to general anesthesia. To the authors' knowledge, esophageal rupture secondary to perianesthetic reflux has never been reported in cats.
