Abstract

The diffusion of autonomous sensing platforms capable of a remote large-scale surveillance of environmental water basins is currently limited by the cost and complexity of standard analytical methods. In order to create a new generation of water analysis systems suitable for continuous monitoring of a large number of sites, novel technical solutions for fluid handling and detection are needed. Here we present a microfluidic device hosting a perfluorinated microporous membrane with refractive index similar to that of water, which enables the combination of filtration and label-free sensing of adsorbing substances, mainly pollutants, in environmental water samples. The cross-flow design of the microfluidic device avoids the clogging of the membrane due to particulate, whereas molecules with some hydrophobic moiety contained in the crossing flow are partially retained and their adhesion on the inner surface of the membrane yields an increase of light scattering intensity, which can be easily measured using a simple instrument based on Light Emitting Diode illumination. By cycling sample water and pure water as a reference, we demonstrate the detection of 0.5 microM of a model cationic surfactant and regeneration of the sensing surface. The optical response of the membrane sensor was characterized using a simple theoretical model that enables to quantify the concentration of target molecules from the amplitude and kinetics of the measured binding curves. The device was tested with real water samples containing large amount of environmental particles, without showing clogging of the membrane, and enabling nonspecific quantification of adsorbing substances in a few minutes.

14. The role played by cell configuration and layer preparation in LEDs based on hydroxyquinoline metal complexes and a triphenyl-diamine derivative (TPD)

Abstract

We have constructed and characterized organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs) based on the combination of active materials belonging to the triphenyldiamine family N,N′-diphenyl-N,N′-bis(3-methylphenyl)-[1.1′ biphenyl]-4,4′ diamine (TPD) with metal complexes of hydroxyquinoline such as (8-hydroxyquinolinate)-Al(III) [Alq3] and Zn(II) [Znq2]. The OLEDs, fabricated by different techniques, both in single (SL) and double-layer configurations (DL), showed, under steady-state driving voltage, meaningful improvements in operating voltage and luminance tuning from SL to DL. Luminance of about 10000 cd/m2 was achieved for cells constructed in double-layer configuration, when one layer contains a mixture of polycarbonate and TPD, prepared by spinning technique.

Abstract

A new non-invasive method to evaluate the thermal polarization is herein proposed for hollow fiber (HFs) membranes during the Direct Contact Membrane Distillation (DCMD) process. The goal was reached by using a temperature-sensitive phosphorescent molecular probe such as Tris(phenanthroline) ruthenium(II) chloride (Ru(phen) 3) and an infrared camera (IR) camera, to map, in-situ , the thermal profile directly at the membrane surface which is in contact with the hot feed water solution. The molecular probe was immobilized, by means of a perfluoropolyether (PFPE)-based coating, on the surface of a polypropylene HF in order to obtain a thermosensitive polymerized coating. The produced HFs were fully characterized in order to demonstrate the successful embodiment of the molecular probe on the surface of the membrane and their suitability, in terms of pore size, hydrophobicity and stability, for DCMD application. The luminescent activity of the immobilized Ru(phen) 3 complex was measured by a bifurcated optical fiber, one branch was used to excite the molecular probe and the other branch was able to constantly monitor the molecular emission which was dependent on the temperature along the HF surface. The HFs were tested in DCMD at different feed temperatures (40 °C, 50 °C, 60 °C) and constant conditions of streams flow rate and distillate temperature (Q f = 90 L/h; Q p = 24 L/h; T p = 13 °C). The obtained results clearly demonstrated the possibility of studying the thermal polarization phenomenon occurring during DCMD, with the temperature profile developed on the HF surface monitored, for the first time, at molecular level using a non-invasive technique. This approach can shed the light on better understanding this phenomenon and the possible strategies for its mitigation and counteraction.
